DRIVING
Going into engine START mode The "ECO" warning lamp goes
off and the engine starts:
- with a manual gearbox , depress
the clutch pedal. Special cases: START invoked
automatically
START is invoked automatically when:
- the driver's door is open,
- the driver's seat belt is not fastened,
- t h e s p e e d o f t h e v e h i c l e e x c e e d s
1 5 m p h ( 2 5 k m / h ) w i t h a m a n u a l
g e a r b o x ,
- some special conditions (battery charge, engine temperature, brak-
ing assistance, ambient tempera-
ture...) where the engine is needed
to assure control of a system. Deactivation
At any time, press the
"ECO OFF" switch
to deactivate the system.
T h i s i s c o n fi r m e d b y t h e s w i t c h w a r n -
ing lamp coming on accompanied by a
message in the screen.
If the system has been deacti-
vated in STOP mode, the en-
gine restarts immediately.
Reactivation
Press the "ECO OFF" switch again.
The system is active again; this is
c o n fi r m e d b y t h e s w i t c h w a r n i n g l a m p
going off, accompanied by a message
in the screen.
The system is reactivated au-
tomatically at every new start
using the key.
W i t h a m a n u a l g e a r b o x i n S T O P
mode, if a gear is engaged with-
out fully depressing the clutch
pedal, a message is displayed
asking you to depress the clutch
pedal to restart the engine. The
"ECO" w a r n i n g l a m p fl a s h -
es, then goes off.
This operation is perfectly normal.

Operating fault Maintenance
In the event of a malfunction with the sys-
tem, the "ECO OFF" switch warning lamp
fl a s h e s , t h e n c o m e s o n c o n t i n u o u s l y .
Have it checked by a CITROËN dealer
o r a q u a l i fi e d w o r k s h o p .
In the event of a fault in STOP mode,
the vehicle may stall. It is then neces-
sary to switch off the ignition and start
the engine again using the key. Before working under the bon-
net, deactivate the Stop & Start
s y s t e m t o a v o i d a n y r i s k o f i n j u r y
resulting from automatic opera-
tion of START mode.
The Stop & Start system makes
use of advanced technology.
All work on this battery must be
done by a CITROËN dealer or a
q u a l i fi e d w o r k s h o p .
This system requires a battery with a
s p e c i a l s p e c i fi c a t i o n a n d t e c h n o l o g y
(reference numbers available from a
C I T R O Ë N d e a l e r o r a q u a l i fi e d w o r k -
shop).
Fitting a battery not listed by CITROËN
introduces the risk of malfunction of the
system.

CHECKS
BONNET
Protects the components of the engine
and provides access for checking levels.
Opening
Push the exterior safety catch B to
the left and raise the bonnet.
Unclip the bonnet stay C from its
housing, holding it by its foam pro-
tection.
Fix the stay in the notch to hold the
bonnet open.
The location of the interior re-
lease lever prevents opening of
the bonnet while the front left
door is closed.
Closing
Take the stay out of the support
notch.
Clip the stay in its housing.
Lower the bonnet and release it at
the end of its travel.
Pull on the bonnet to check that it is
fully latched.
RUNNING OUT OF FUEL
(DIESEL)
I f y o u r v e h i c l e i s fi t t e d w i t h a n H D I e n -
gine, the fuel system must be primed if
you run out of fuel.
This system consists of a priming pump
and a transparent pipe under the bonnet.
F i l l t h e f u e l t a n k w i t h a t l e a s t fi v e l i t r e s
of Diesel.
Open the bonnet.
Depending on version, unclip the
cover to gain access to the priming
pump.
Squeeze and release the priming
pump until resistance is felt (could
b e f r o m t h e fi r s t a p p l i c a t i o n ) a n d f u e l
appears in the transparent pipe with
the green connector.
Operate the starter until the engine
starts.
Depending on version, put the cover
back in position and clip it in place.
Close the bonnet.
If the engine does not start at the
fi r s t a t t e m p t , d o n o t t r y a g a i n .
Operate the priming pump again,
then the starter.
When the engine is hot, handle
the exterior safety catch and the
stay with care.
Before doing anything under the
bonnet, switch off the Stop &
Start system to avoid any risk of
injury resulting from an automatic
change to START mode.
Open the front left door.
Pull the interior release lever A ,
located at the bottom of the door
aperture.

CHECKS
CHECKING LEVELS
Check all of these levels regularly and
top them up if necessary, unless other-
wise indicated.
I f a l e v e l d r o p s s i g n i fi c a n t l y , h a v e t h e
corresponding system checked by a
C I T R O Ë N d e a l e r o r a q u a l i fi e d w o r k -
shop.
Oil level The reading will only be correct
if the vehicle is on level ground
and the engine has been off for
more than 30 minutes.
The check is carried out either when the
ignition is switched on using the oil level
indicator in the instrument panel, or us-
ing the dipstick.
Engine oil change
Refer to the Maintenance and Warranty
Guide for details of the interval for this
operation.
In order to maintain the reliability of the
engine and emission control system,
the use of additives in the engine oil is
prohibited.
Oil grade
The oil must be suitable for your engine
and conform to the manufacturer's rec-
ommendations. Brake fluid level
T h e b r a k e fl u i d l e v e l s h o u l d b e
close to the "MAX" mark. If it is
not, check the brake pad wear.
C h a n g i n g t h e fl u i d
Refer to the Maintenance and Warranty
Guide for details of the interval for this
operation.
F l u i d s p e c i fi c a t i o n
T h e b r a k e fl u i d m u s t c o n f o r m t o t h e
manufacturer's recommendations and
meet the DOT4 standard.
Coolant level The coolant level should be
close to the "MAX" mark but
should never exceed it.
When the engine is warm, the
temperature of the coolant is regulated
by the fan. This can operate with the ig-
nition off.
O n v e h i c l e s w h i c h a r e fi t t e d w i t h a p a r -
t i c l e e m i s s i o n fi l t e r , t h e f a n m a y o p e r -
ate after the vehicle has been switched
o f f , e v e n i f t h e e n g i n e i s c o l d .
In addition, as the cooling system is
pressurised, wait at least one hour after
switching off the engine before carrying
out any work. To avoid any risk of scalding, unscrew
the cap by two turns to allow the pres-
sure to drop. When the pressure has
dropped, remove the cap and top up
the level.
Changing the coolant
The coolant does not have to be
changed.
F l u i d s p e c i fi c a t i o n
The coolant must conform to the manu-
facturer's recommendations.
Screenwash fluid level
Top up the level when neces-
sary.
F l u i d s p e c i fi c a t i o n
For optimum cleaning and to avoid
f r e e z i n g , t h i s fl u i d m u s t n o t b e t o p p e d
up or replaced with water.
Take care when carrying out
checks under the bonnet as
some parts of the engine can be
v e r y h o t ( r i s k o f b u r n s ) .

Additive level (Diesel with
particle emissions filter)
According to your version of instrument panel,
the additive reservoir low level is indicated by:
- fi x e d i l l u m i n a t i o n o f t h e p a r t i c l e e m i s s i o n s fi l t e r w a r n i n g l a m p , a c c o m p a n i e d b y a n
audible signal and a message that the
p a r t i c l e e m i s s i o n s fi l t e r a d d i t i v e l e v e l i s
too low,
or
- fi x e d i l l u m i n a t i o n o f t h e s e r v i c e w a r n i n g lamp, accompanied by an audible signal
and a message that the particle emissions
fi l t e r a d d i t i v e l e v e l i s t o o l o w .
Topping up
The reservoir must be topped up with-
out delay by a CITROËN dealer or a
q u a l i fi e d w o r k s h o p .
Used products
Avoid prolonged contact of used
o i l o r fl u i d s w i t h t h e s k i n .
M o s t o f t h e s e fl u i d s a r e h a r m f u l
to health or indeed very corro-
sive.
D o n o t d i s c a r d u s e d o i l o r fl u i d s
into sewers or onto the ground.
Take used oil to a CITROËN

Unless otherwise indicated, check these
components in accordance with the
Maintenance and Warranty Guide and ac-

B a t t e r y
The battery does not require any
maintenance.
H o w e v e r , c h e c k t h a t t h e t e r m i n a l s
are clean and correctly tightened,
particularly in summer and winter.
Air filter and passenger
compartment filter Refer to the Maintenance and
Warranty Guide for details of
the replacement intervals for
these components.
Depending on the environment
( e . g . d u s t y a t m o s p h e r e ) a n d t h e u s e o f
t h e v e h i c l e ( e . g . c i t y d r i v i n g ) , replace

A c l o g g e d p a s s e n g e r c o m p a r t m e n t fi l t e r
may have an adverse effect on the per-
formance of the air conditioning system
and generate undesirable odours.

Brake pads Brake wear depends on the
style of driving, particularly in
the case of vehicles used in
town, over short distances. It
may be necessary to have the
condition of the brakes checked, even
between vehicle services.
Unless there is a leak in the system, a

Manual parking brake
If a loss of effectiveness of this system is noticed, the parking
brake must be checked, even
between two services.

In order to optimise the opera-
tion of units as important as the
braking system, CITROËN se-
l e c t s a n d o f f e r s v e r y s p e c i fi c
products.
To avoid damaging the electrical
units, the use of a high pressure
washer in the engine compart-
ment is strictly prohibited .
Particle emission filter (Diesel)
According to your version of instrument
panel, the start of saturation of the par-
t i c l e e m i s s i o n s fi l t e r i s i n d i c a t e d b y :
Following prolonged operation of the vehicle at very low speed or
at idle, you may, in exceptional
circumstances, notice the emis-
sion of water vapour at the ex-
haust on acceleration. This does
not affect the behaviour of the
vehicle or the environment.
