Release
The electric parking brake releases
automatically and progressively
when you press the accelerator:
with a manual gearbox ( fi r s t
gear or reverse gear engaged),
press down fully on the clutch
pedal then press on the accel-
erator pedal and move off.
with an automatic gearbox ,
accelerate with the selector in
position D , M or R .
Full release of the parking brake is
c o n fi r m e d b y : - warning lamp P on control
A going off,
- display of a message "hand- brake off" in the instrument panel
screen.
When stationary, with the engine
running, do not press the accelera-
tor pedal unnecessarily (particularly
when starting the engine, including
in neutral), as you may release the
parking brake.
Do nat place any object (packet of
cigarettes, telephone...) between
the gear lever and the electric park-
ing brake control. Activation/Deactivation of the
automatic functions
Depending on the country of sale,
automatic application when switch-
ing off the engine and automatic
release when moving off can be de-
activated. The activation/deactiva-
tion is done in the instrument panel
s c r e e n c o n fi g u r a t i o n m e n u . S e l e c t
"Vehicle parameters/Comfort/Auto
handbrake".
Deactivation of these func-
tions is signalled by this
warning lamp in the instru-
ment panel.
With the automatic functions deac-
tivated, the parking brake must be
applied and released manually.
In some special circumstanc-
es, with the engine not run-
ning, (towing, icy conditions...) the
automatic parking brake can be
released manually, with the key in
the running position. Manual operation
Manual application/release of the
parking brake is always possible.
Application
With the vehicle stationary, to apply
the parking brake whether the engine
is running or off,
pull on control A .
The application of the parking brake

- display of a message "hand- brake on" in the instrument panel
screen.
When the driver’s door is
opened with the engine run-
ning, a beep is heard and a
message displayed if the parking
brake has not been applied. - this warning lamp in the

off,
I f t h e c o n fi g u r a t i o n m e n u d o e s
not have the option to activate/de-
activate the automatic functions,
this can be done by a CITROËN
dealer.

Release
With the ignition on or the engine
running, to release the parking
brake, press on the brake pedal,
push then release control A .
The full application of the parking
b r a k e i s c o n fi r m e d b y : - warning lamp P on control
A going off,
- display of a message "parking brake released" in the instru-
ment panel screen.
If you push control A without pressing
the brake pedal, the parking brake
will not be released and the message
"Apply foot on brake" will be dis-
played on the instrument panel.
When stationary, with the en-
gine running, do not press the
accelerator pedal unneces-
sarily, as you may release the
parking brake. Maximum application
If necessary, you can utilise
maxi-
mum application of the parking
brake. It is obtained by means of a
long pull on control A , until you see
t h e m e s s a g e " M a x a p p l i c a t i o n o f t h e
handbrake" and a beep is heard.
Maximum application is essential:
- in the case of a vehicle towing a caravan or a trailer, if the au-
tomatic functions are activated
but you are applying the parking
brake manually,
- when the gradient you are parked on is variable in its effect (e.g. on
a ferry, in a lorry, during towing).
- in the case of towing, a loaded vehicle or parking on a gradient,
turn the front wheels towards the
pavement and engage a gear
when you park.
- a f t e r a m a x i m u m a p p l i c a t i o n , t h e release time will be longer. Particular situations
In certain situations (starting the en-
gine...), the parking brake can auto-
matically alter its level of application.
This is normal operation.
To advance your vehicle a few
centimetres without starting the en-
gine, but with the ignition on, press
on the brake pedal and release the
parking brake
by pushing then re-
leasing control A .

brake off" on the instrument panel
screen.
If the parking brake malfunctions
while applied o r i f t h e b a t t e r y i s fl a t ,
an emergency release is still pos-
sible.
To ensure correct operation of the
parking brake and therefore your
safety, the number of successive
application/release operations is
limited to eight.
I f t h i s n u m b e r i s e x c e e d e d , y o u a r e
warned by the message "Parking
brake faulty" and a warning lamp
fl a s h e s .

Dynamic emergency braking
In the event of a failure of the vehi-
cle’s main braking system or in an
e x c e p t i o n a l s i t u a t i o n ( e . g . d r i v e r t a k -
en ill, under instruction, etc) pull and
hold control A to stop the vehicle.
The electronic stability programme
( E S P ) p r o v i d e s s t a b i l i t y d u r i n g d y -
namic emergency braking.
If the dynamic emergency braking
malfunctions, one of the following
messages will be displayed on the
instrument panel display:
- "Parking brake faulty".
- "Parking brake control faulty". I f a f a i l u r e o f t h e E S P s y s -
tem is signalled by the light-
ing of this warning lamp,
then braking stability is not
guaranteed. In this event, stability
must be assured by the driver by
repeating alternate "pull release" ac-
tions on control A .
The dynamic emergency
braking must only be used in
e x c e p t i o n a l c i r c u m s t a n c e s . Emergency parking brake
release
In the event of the electric parking
brake failing to release, an emer-
gency device can be used to release
the parking brake manually, provid-
ed that it is possible to immobilise
the vehicle while the procedure is
carried out.
If you can start the vehicle: with
the engine running, immobilise
the vehicle by applying the foot
brake while the operation is be-
ing carried out.
If you are unable to start the ve-
h i c l e ( fl a t b a t t e r y f o r e x a m p l e ) : d o
not use this device and contact
a CITROËN dealer. However, if
y o u a r e o b l i g e d t o p r o c e e d , fi r s t
immobilise your vehicle securely
and then follow the instructions
below.
If the vehicle cannot be im-
mobilised, do not operate
the emergency release. Your ve-
hicle may run away on any slope.
Consult a CITROËN dealer.

On sloping ground: immobilise
the vehicle by placing the chocks
(if your vehicle has them) in front
or behind the two front wheels,
against the slope
On level ground: immobilise the vehicle by placing the chocks
(if your vehicle has them) in
front and behind one of the front
wheels.
Open the lower compartment of
the centre armrest by pulling it.
Ensure that the cup holder B is
folded away.
Remove the rubber mat covering
the base of the armrest. This strap does not permit
application of the parking
brake.
To re-engage the electric parking
brake (after rectifying the malfunc-
tion or battery failure), give a long
pull on the control A until the park-
i n g b r a k e w a r n i n g l a m p ( ! ) fl a s h e s
on the instrument panel then give a
second long pull until this warning
l a m p i s o n fi x e d .
The time required for the subse-
quent application may be longer
than during normal operation.
It is essential that the ignition is
not switched on until the parking
b r a k e h a s r e - e n g a g e d ( fl a s h i n g o f
the warning lamp (!) on the instru-
ment panel then the warning lamp
o n fi x e d ) t o a v o i d d a m a g e t o t h e
parking brake.
Take care not to allow moisture or
d u s t i n t h e p r o x i m i t y o f t h e d i a g n o s -
tic socket D which is essential for
the maintenance of your vehicle.
Release the strap from its loca-
tion C .
Pull the strap to release the
b r a k e . A l o u d k n o c k c o n fi r m s t h e
release of the brake.
Take care to put the strap back in
its location C correctly. Otherwise,
it will no longer be possible to ap-
ply the brake. Consult a CITROËN
dealer.
Put the rubber mat back in place
on the base of the armrest.

If any of these instances arises, contact a CITROËN dealer as soon as possible.

It this situation arises:

tialise the parking brake, either by pushing and releasing th e
control A while pressing the brake pedal or by means of a long
pull on control A .
7 Battery fault - Lighting of the battery warning lamp ma

vehicle.
- Apply the electric parking brake before switching off the engine.

HILL START ASSIST
S y s t e m w h i c h k e e p s y o u r v e h i c l e
i m m o b i l i s e d t e m p o r a r i l y ( a p p r o x i -
mately 2 seconds) when starting on
a gradient, the time to move your
foot from the brake pedal to the ac-
celerator pedal.
This function is only active when:
- the vehicle is completely station-ary, with your foot on the brake
pedal,
- in certain conditions on a gradient,
- with the driver’s door closed.
The hill start assist function cannot
be deactivated. Operation
On an ascending gradient, with
the vehicle stationary, the vehicle
is held for a brief moment when
you release the brake pedal:
- p r o v i d e d y o u a r e i n fi r s t g e a r o r n e u t r a l o n a m a n u a l g e a r b o x ,
- provided you are in D or M on an
a u t o m a t i c g e a r b o x .
On a descending gradient, with
the vehicle stationary and reverse
gear engaged, the vehicle is held
for a brief moment when you re-
lease the brake pedal.
D o n o t e x i t t h e v e h i c l e w h i l e
it is being held in the hill start
assist phase.
If you need to leave the vehicle with
the engine running, apply the park-
ing brake manually and ensure that
the parking brake warning lamp (in
t h e i n s t r u m e n t p a n e l ) i s o n fi x e d
( n o t fl a s h i n g ) .

The position of the gear lever the the

A selection grille alongside the gear
lever also allows you to see the
selected position.

To start the engine, the gear lever
must be in position N .
Press the brake pedal down fully.
Operate the starter
N appears in the instrument panel
screen.

tion screen, if the gear lever is not
in position N on starting.

Release the parking brake un-
less it is programmed in auto-
matic mode.
Release the brake pedal, then
accelerate.
With your foot on the brake, push
the lever forwards.
Reverse
Only engage reverse with
the vehicle immobilised.
To avoid any jerking, wait a
moment before accelerating.
Neutral Never select position N with
the vehicle moving.

Manual gear changing
This selective gear change mode
e n a b l e s y o u t o o v e r t a k e , f o r e x a m -
ple, while still remaining in automat-
ic mode.
Operate the + or - steering
mounted control paddle.
T h e g e a r b o x e n g a g e s t h e g e a r r e -
quested if the engine speed per-
mits.
After a few moments without any
a c t i o n o n t h e c o n t r o l s , t h e g e a r b o x
resumes automatic control of the
gears.
S e l e c t p o s i t i o n A .
T h e g e a r b o x c o n t i n u o u s l y s e l e c t s
the most suitable gear, depending
on the:
- style of driving,
- p r o fi l e o f t h e r o a d .
- vehicle loading.
Automatic operation
F o r o p t i m u m a c c e l e r a t i o n , f o r e x a m p l e
when overtaking another vehicle, press
t h e a c c e l e r a t o r p e d a l fi r m l y p a s t t h e
point of resistance.
S e l e c t p o s i t i o n M .
Manual operation
On sharp acceleration, the gear-
b o x w i l l n o t c h a n g e u p u n l e s s t h e
driver acts on the gear lever or the
steering mounted paddles.
Never select neutral
N while the
vehicle is moving.
Only engage reverse gear R when
the vehicle is immobilised with the
brake pedal pressed.
The gear change requests are only
carried out if the engine speed per-
mits.
It is not necessary to release the ac-
celerator during gear changes.
When braking or slowing down, the
g e a r b o x c h a n g e s d o w n a u t o m a t i -
cally to allow vehicle to accelerate in
the correct gear.
The
SPORT programme is inopera-
tive with sequential operation.

When immobilising the ve-
hicle, with the engine running,
you must place the gear lever
in neutral N .
Before carrying out any work in the
engine compartment, check that
the gear lever is in neutral N and
that the parking brake is applied.
SPORT programme Stopping the vehicle
Before switching off the engine, you
can choose to:
- move to position N to engage
neutral,
- leave the gear engaged; in this case, it will not be possible to
move the vehicle.
In both cases, you must apply the
parking brake to immobilise the ve-
hicle. Operating fault
W i t h t h e i g n i t i o n o n , t h e fl a s h i n g o f
AUTO , accompanied by an audible
signal and a message on the mul-
tifunction screen, indicates a mal-
f u n c t i o n o f t h e g e a r b o x .
Have it checked by a CITROËN
dealer.
Wit the gear lever at A and the
engine running, press button S to
activate the SPORT programme,
which provides a more dynamic
driving style.
S appears in the instrument panel.
Press the S button again to
switch it off.
S then disappears from the instru-
ment panel screen. You must press the brake pedal
when starting the engine.
Whatever the circumstances, you
must manually apply the parking
brake when parking, unless the
parking brake is programmed in au-
tomatic mode.
