FLUID TYPE
Use SAE 80W-90 or SAE 90W hypoid gear lubricant with MIL-L-
2105-C and API GL-5 ratings. Also add a container of Mopar Gear Oil
Friction Modifier when refilling.
FLUID DRAIN & REFILL
1) With lubricant of rear axle assembly at operating
temperature, raise and support vehicle so rear wheels are free to
rotate. Clean around axle housing cover. Loosen axle housing cover
bolts. Drain lubricant from axle housing. Remove bolts and axle
housing cover.
2) Position differential so hole in differential case is
facing downward. Wipe out all accessible areas of axle housing. Ensure
sealing surfaces on axle housing and cover are clean. Apply a 1/4"
thick bead of silicone sealant on inside of bolt holes and along
sealing surfaces on axle housing cover.
3) Install axle housing cover, axle identification tag and
retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 30-35 ft. lbs. (41-47 N.m). Remove
oil filler plug. Add a container of Mopar Gear Oil Friction Modifier.
Fill axle with gear lube. Install oil filler plug. Lower vehicle.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
DIFFERENTIAL NOISE
1) Ensure differential lubricant is at normal operating
temperature. Road test vehicle. Note if differential noise exists in
turns, but not during straight-ahead driving. Probable cause is
incorrect or insufficient rear axle lubricant or additive.
2) Drain and refill rear axle. See FLUID DRAIN & REFILL under
LUBRICATION. Road test vehicle making 10-12 slow figure-8 turns and
note if noise still exists. It may be necessary to disassemble rear
axle so differential can be repaired. See RBI FULL FLOATING AXLES
article for removal of differential case.

1998-99 Drive Axles
CHRY - Drive Shafts & "U" Joints - RWD Trucks
Dakota, Ram Pickup, Ram Van/Wagon
DESCRIPTION
Drive shafts are balanced, tubular shafts with "U" joints
attached at each end. Flanges or yokes are used to connect drive shaft
"U" joints to rear differential pinion flange or to transmission
output shaft. "U" joint bearing caps are bolted to shaft flanges, or
are pressed into shaft yokes. Drive shafts can be steel or aluminum.
Number of drive shafts used by vehicle depends on vehicle
length and 4WD capability. Long wheel base vehicles use 2 rear drive
shafts with a center bearing support assembly. See Fig. 1. 4WD
applications use a double cardan constant velocity joint on front axle
drive shaft for correct drive shaft-to-front axle alignment. See
Fig. 12 .
Locations of slip joints and splined shafts vary with model
application. Single tube type drive shaft has slip joint on outside of
"U" joint flange/yoke. This slip joint slides in and out on
transmission's splined main shaft.

1) On drive shafts greater than 30" in length, measure runout
3" from transmission flange/yoke, center bearing yoke and pinion
flange using dial indicator. Maximum runout for Ram Pickup is .030" (.
76 mm) at front and rear end of drive shaft and .035" (.89 mm) at
center of drive shaft. Maximum runout for all other models is .010" (.
25 mm) at front and rear end of drive shaft and .015" (.38 mm) at
center of drive shaft.
2) For drive shafts less than 30" in length, maximum runout
for Pickup is .030" (.76 mm). Maximum runout for all other models is .\
020" (.51 mm). Replace drive shaft if maximum runout is exceeded.
BALANCING DRIVE SHAFT
1) Perform following procedure only after inspecting all
other possible causes of vibration. See INSPECTION. Drive shaft
imbalance may often be cured by disconnecting shaft, rotating it 180
degrees and reconnecting shaft to flange. Test drive to check results.
NOTE: DO NOT run engine for prolonged periods without forced
airflow across radiator. Engine or transmission may
overheat.
2) To balance drive shaft(s), begin by raising rear wheels
off ground and turning drive shaft with engine. Balance testing may be
done by marking drive shaft in 4 positions, 90 degrees apart around
shaft. Place marks about 6" forward of rear flange/yoke weld. Number
marks 1-4.
3) Install large diameter screw-type hose clamp around drive
shaft so clamp's head is in No. 1 position. Spin drive shaft with
engine and note vibrations. If there is little or no change in
vibration intensity, move clamp head to No. 2 position, and repeat
test.
4) Continue procedure until vibration is at lowest level. If
no difference is noted with clamp head moved to all 4 positions,
vibrations may not be due to drive shaft imbalance.
5) If vibration decreases but is not completely eliminated,
place a second clamp at same position, and repeat test. Combined
weight of both clamps in one position may increase vibration. If so,
rotate clamps 1/2" apart, above and below lowest vibration level
position, and repeat test.
6) Continue to rotate clamps, as necessary, until vibration
is at lowest point. If vibration can be eliminated or reduced to
acceptable level, bend back slack end of clamp so screw cannot loosen.
If vibration level is still unacceptable, leave rear clamp(s) in
place, and repeat procedure at front end of drive shaft. Road test
vehicle. On 4WD models, perform procedure on each shaft.
CHECKING VERTICAL ANGLE
One-Piece Drive Shafts
1) Raise and support vehicle so rear wheels can be rotated.
Rotate drive shaft so a pinion flange bearing cap faces downward.
Attach Inclinometer (C-4224) magnet to bearing cap, and measure drive
shaft vertical angle. See Fig. 4. Remove inclinometer.
2) Rotate drive shaft 90 degrees until drive shaft rear yoke
bearing cap faces downward. Attach inclinometer magnet to bearing cap,
and measure drive shaft vertical angle. Difference between 2 measured
angles is drive shaft rear angle. See Fig. 5. Remove inclinometer.
3) Rotate drive shaft until a slip joint yoke bearing cap
faces downward. Attach inclinometer magnet to bearing cap, and note
angle. Remove inclinometer. Rotate drive shaft 90 degrees until drive
shaft front yoke bearing cap faces downward. Attach inclinometer
magnet to bearing cap, and note angle. Remove inclinometer.

CAUTION: DO NOT clamp drive shaft tube or slip joint tube in a vise.
Clamp only forged portion of each yoke in vise. To avoid
distorting yoke, DO NOT overtighten vise jaws.
3) Using vise or press, push bearing caps into yoke bores,
keeping spider aligned in center of bearing caps. Using socket with
diameter slightly smaller than bearing cap, continue pressing caps
inward until retainer clips can be installed. Install inner or outer
type bearing cap retainer clips.
4) Install lube fitting, and lube "U" joint. Install drive
shaft. Tighten "U" joint clamp bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 N.m). Lower
vehicle.

DOUBLE CARDAN CONSTANT VELOCITY (CV) JOINT (4WD)
NOTE: Other than adding grease, "U" joint assembly items are not
individually serviceable or repairable. If needle bearings,
seals, spider, or bearing caps are found to be defective,
damaged or excessively worn, complete "U" joint assembly must
be replaced.
CAUTION: DO NOT allow pinion flange end of front drive shaft to hang
free or bend at sharp angle from CV joint.
Removal & Disassembly (Dakota & Ram Pickup)
1) Mark drive shaft yoke-to-front pinion flange position and
transfer case flange-to-CV joint flange position for installation
reference. Remove CV joint flange-to-transfer case flange bolts first,
then remove pinion flange bolts. Remove front drive shaft from
vehicle. DO NOT bend shaft at sharp angle from CV joint.
2) Mark CV joint components for reassembly reference. Remove
all inner or outer type bearing cap retaining clips. See Fig. 12.
3) Set joint in arbor press or vise and place a socket on
upper bearing cap. Partially press one bearing cap from outer side of

link yoke enough to grasp bearing cap with vise jaws. Remove grease
fittings that interfere with removal.
4) Grasp protruding bearing in vise jaws. Tap link yoke with
mallet and drift to dislodge bearing cap from yoke.
5) Flip assembly and repeat steps 3 and 4 to remove opposite
bearing cap. Remove cross centering kit assembly and spring.
6) Press remaining bearing caps out other end of link yoke to
complete disassembly.
Reassembly & Installation
1) Clean dirt and rust from all contact areas. Apply
multipurpose lubricant (NLGI grade 2 EP) to yoke bores and into needle\
bearings of each bearing cap. Lube center socket yoke and needle
bearings. See Fig. 12.
2) Position spider in drive shaft yoke bore. Reassemble
components in reverse order of disassembly, ensuring reference marks
align. Install drive shaft in vehicle, and tighten flange bolts to
specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
Installation
1) Before installing drive shaft, clean mating flange, and
inspect machined surface for scratches, nicks and burrs. Support drive
shaft during installation to prevent bending shaft at sharp angle to
CV joint and causing damage to "U" joints.
2) Aligning reference marks, install CV joint flange to
transfer case flange first, then install shaft to pinion flange.
Attach 2 clamps to pinion flange, and tighten attaching bolts to
specification. Install and tighten 4 bolts to CV joint at transfer
case flange.

reference marks on torque converter and flexplate are aligned.
Evacuate and charge A/C system.
Removal (Durango 4WD & Dakota 4WD)
1) Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE.
Disconnect and remove battery. Scribe hood hinges for installation
reference and remove hood.
2) Drain cooling system. Disconnect coolant hoses. Remove
radiator, fan and shroud. Discharge A/C system (if equipped) using
approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Disconnect A/C
lines, and plug openings. Remove air cleaner, vacuum lines,
distributor cap and wiring.
3) Disconnect necessary electrical wiring. Disconnect fuel
lines. See FUEL LINE DISCONNECT FITTINGS. Disconnect accelerator
linkage. Remove throttle body. Remove starter and generator.
Disconnect power steering hoses. Raise and support vehicle. Drain oil.
Disconnect exhaust pipe at exhaust manifold.
NOTE: Engine, transmission and front axle are connected and
supported with insulators and brackets. See Fig. 3.
4) On left side, remove 2 bolts attaching differential pinion
nose bracket-to-bellhousing bolts. Remove pinion nose bracket-to-
adapter bolts (located on top of differential, near pinion). Separate
engine from engine mount by removing engine mount through-bolt and nut
located on top of engine mount.
5) On right side, remove 2 axle-to-bracket bolts and bracket-
to-bellhousing bolt. Separate engine from engine mount by removing
engine mount through-bolt and nut located on top of engine mount.
Remove engine from vehicle.

Removal (Dakota 4WD & Durango 4WD)
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove oil dipstick.
Drain engine oil. Remove exhaust pipe crossover and lower transmission
cover.
2) Remove front drive axle for access to oil pan. For front
drive axle removal, loosen wheel lug nuts. Remove cotter pin, lock nut
and spring washer. Loosen axle shaft nut with vehicle on floor and
brakes applied. Raise and support vehicle.
CAUTION: DO NOT pull on rubber boot during axle shaft removal. Pull on
outer CV joint only.
3) Remove wheels and skid plate. Remove axle shaft nut.
Remove axle shaft-to-differential flange bolts at front drive axle.
Support axle shaft, and separate axle splines from wheel hub by
pulling inward at outer CV joint.
4) Remove remaining axle shaft. Mark front drive shaft and
transfer case yoke for installation reference. Remove front drive
shaft from transfer case. Disconnect vacuum hoses from shift motor and
electrical connections at shift indicator switch.
5) Support front drive axle using a floor jack. Remove front
drive axle and shift motor bolts. Lower floor jack, and remove front
drive axle with drive shaft. Remove transmission lower cover. Remove
bolts, oil pan and gasket.
Installation
1) To install, reverse removal procedure. Before installing
oil pan, apply RTV sealant where front cover contacts cylinder block,
oil pan side gaskets meet end seals and end seals contact cylinder
block. See Fig. 14.
2) To facilitate oil pan installation, fabricate 4 alignment
dowels from 1 1/2" x 5/16" bolts. See Fig. 15. Tighten bolts to
specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
3) To install remaining components, reverse removal
procedure. When installing front drive axle, loosely install all bolts
before tightening to specification. Tighten axle shaft nut to
specification with vehicle on ground. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
Ensure reference marks on transfer case yoke and front drive shaft are
aligned.
Removal (Ram Pickup & Ram Van/Wagon - 3.9L)
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove oil dipstick. On
Ram Van/Wagon, remove engine cover. On all models, remove air cleaner
and engine controller. Raise and support vehicle. Drain engine oil.
2) Remove left engine-to-transmission strut. Loosen exhaust
pipe support bracket. Disconnect exhaust pipe. On Ram Pickup, remove
oil pan and gasket.
3) On Ram Van/Wagon, remove starter, transmission dust
shield, oxygen sensor and air injection tube. On all models, remove
right engine mount nut. Loosen, but DO NOT remove, left engine mount
nut.
4) Support right side of engine using jackstand. Remove
transmission mount through-bolt, and support transmission using
jackstand. Raise engine and transmission enough for oil pan removal.
Remove bolts, oil pan and gasket.
Installation
1) To install, reverse removal procedure. Before installing
oil pan, apply RTV sealant where front cover contacts cylinder block,
oil pan side gaskets meet end seals and end seals contact cylinder
block. See Fig. 14.

CAUTION: Ensure oil pump fully engages with distributor drive shaft
before tightening bolt. It may be necessary to slightly
rotate oil pump during installation to align with distributor
drive shaft.
Reassembly & Installation
To reassemble, reverse disassembly procedure. Install NEW
relief valve retainer cap and oil seal ring. Tighten pump cover bolts.
Fill rotor cavity with engine oil before installing. To install,
reverse removal procedure.
