damage clockspring and/or require clockspring to be
readjusted.
NOTE: Clockspring is self-centering and will automatically lock in
the centered position when steering wheel is removed.
Adjustment is only required if centering position is
disturbed.
Removal
1) Before proceeding, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Disable air
bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
2) Clockspring is located behind steering wheel. See Fig. 1.
Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Lock steering
wheel. Remove air bag module. See AIR BAG MODULE.
3) Remove steering wheel nut. Using appropriate steering
wheel puller, remove steering wheel. When steering wheel is removed,
self-centering clockspring will automatically lock in place. Remove
upper and lower steering column shrouds to gain access to clockspring
wiring.
4) Remove knee bolster (if equipped). Disconnect Yellow 2-wa\
y
clockspring harness connector between clockspring and instrument panel
wiring harness, at base of steering column. See Fig. 13. Remove
clockspring by releasing 2 tabs on side of clockspring. Clockspring
cannot be repaired and must be replaced if faulty.
Installation
1) Snap clockspring onto steering column. If clockspring
centering adjustment is disturbed, adjust clockspring before
installing steering wheel. See CLOCKSPRING CENTERING under
ADJUSTMENTS. Connect clockspring wiring connectors. Install steering
column covers. Install knee bolster (if removed).
2) Position steering wheel on steering column. Ensure flats
on steering wheel hub fit formations on inside of clockspring. Pull
clockspring, cruise control switch (if equipped) and horn wires
through lower large holes and upper small holes in steering wheel.
3) Install steering wheel retaining nut and tighten to 45 ft.
lbs. (61 N.m). Connect horn and cruise control wires (if equipped).
Connect clockspring wire to air bag module. To ensure complete
connector connection, latching arms must be visible on top of
connector housing. DO NOT connect negative battery cable at this time.
Go to SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
PASSENGER AIR BAG DISARM (PAD) SWITCH
Removal & Installation
1) Before proceeding, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Disable air
bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
2) If vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission, turn
ignition switch to UNLOCK position, set parking brake and place
transmission selector lever in LOW position. Tilt steering column to
lowest position (if equipped). Using trim stick, gently pry around
perimeter of cluster bezel and remove bezel.
3) Open glove box. Holding glove box door, push center of
glove box bin towards front of vehicle. Flex glove box bin far enough
so glove box stops will clear sides of instrument panel opening. Roll
glove box down until stop bumpers are beyond sides of instrument panel
opening. Release bin. Lift bottom of glove box upward to disengage
hinge hooks form hinge pins.
4) Reach through glove box opening to access and disconnect 2
passenger-side air bag disarm switch harness connectors. Connectors
are attached to bracket located on inboard glove box opening
reinforcement. See Fig. 4. Remove 3 screws retaining passenger-side
air bag disarm switch bezel to instrument panel.

DIAGNOSIS & TESTING
* PLEASE READ THIS FIRST *
WARNING: Always follow air bag service precautions to avoid air bag
deployment and possible personal injury. Refer to procedure
under SERVICE PRECAUTIONS . After component replacement,
ensure proper system operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK.
CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory
systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may
exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle.
See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES in GENERAL INFORMATION.
NOTE: Although other scan tools are available, manufacturer
recommends using Diagnostic Readout Box (DRB) tester to
access SRS on-board diagnostics. Following diagnosis and
testing procedures are designed for use with DRB.
SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM
SRS is monitored by Air Bag Control Module (ACM). ACM
contains safing sensor, an integral sensor in circuitry of system,
which is used to deploy air bag modules.
ACM monitors critical input and output circuits within air
bag system, ensuring they operate correctly. Some circuits are tested
continuously; others are checked under certain conditions. ACM
provides information about air bag system, through AIR BAG warning
light and DRB tester. Each circuit monitored by ACM has a
corresponding fault code or fault message assigned to it.
Active Codes
A code becomes active as soon as a malfunction is detected.
An active trouble code indicates an on-going malfunction. This means
the defect is currently there every time the ACM checks that
circuit/function. An active trouble code can not be erases. Active
codes will automatically erase when the reason for the code has been
corrected.
With the exception of warning light trouble codes or
malfunctions, when a malfunction is detected, AIR BAG warning light
remains illuminated for a minimum of 12 seconds or as long as the
malfunction is present.
Stored Codes
Trouble codes are automatically stored in ACM memory as soon

as the malfunction is detected. A stored code indicates there was an
active code present at some time. However, the code currently may not
be present as an active code, although another active code could be.
When a trouble code occurs, the AIR BAG warning light
illuminates for 12 seconds minimum (even if problem existed for less
than 12 seconds). Code is stored, along with time in minutes it was
active, and number of times ignition has been cycled since problem was
detected.
When and if malfunction ceases to exist, an ignition cycle
count will be initiated for that code. If ignition cycle count reaches
100 without a reoccurrence of the same malfunction, DTC is erased and
that ignition cycle counter is reset to zero. If malfunction reoccurs
before count reaches 100, ignition cycle counter will be reset and DTC
will continue to be a stored code.
If a particular code is not active while performing
diagnostic test for that code, code diagnostic test may not locate the
source of the problem. In this case, stored code can only indicate an
area of system to inspect.
If no obvious problems are found, erase stored codes, and
with ignition on, wiggle wiring harness and connectors. Recheck for
codes periodically as you work through system. This procedure may
uncover a difficult problem to locate.
PRETEST INSPECTION & DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE
Following precautions and procedures must be followed:
* Always follow air bag service precautions to avoid air bag
deployment and possible personal injury. Refer to procedure
under See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS.
* After component replacement, ensure proper system operation.
See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
* When testing voltage or continuity at ACM, use terminal side
(not wire end) of connector. DO NOT probe wire through
insulation.
* Always check if any TECH SERVICE BULLETINS (TSBs) apply to
vehicle.
* When using diagnostic charts, DO NOT skip any steps in chart
or incorrect diagnosis may result. Always perform
SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK after repairs are made.
* Always use most current DRB diagnostic program cartridge
available to prevent erroneous codes or test results.
* When using diagnostic charts, use DRB voltmeter unless
instructed to use an external voltmeter. Never use a test
light in place of a voltmeter.
* When performing electrical tests, prevent accidental
shorting of terminals. Such shorts can damage fuses or
components and may cause a second code (message) to be
set, making diagnosis of original problem more difficult.
* Vehicle must have a fully-charged battery and functional
charging system.
* Each time a connector is disconnected, inspect it to ensure
it is in good condition. Always focus on circuit being
tested. Dirt, water and corrosion, are most common problems
in connectors.
* Always disconnect DRB after use.
* Always disconnect DRB before charging battery.
USING DRB
1) Refer to DRB user guide for instructions and assistance
with reading trouble codes and other DRB functions. Under normal
operation DRB will display one of only 2 error messages: User-

DOOR JAMB SWITCH
NOTE: Door jamb switch may also be referred to as door ajar switch.
On Ram Van and Ram Wagon, front door jamb switches are part
of latch assembly and are not serviced separately.
Removal & Installation
Disconnect negative battery cable. On Ram Van and Ram Wagon,
unscrew door ajar switch from pillar. On Ram Pickup, using pliers,
pull back and forth to slide switch from pillar. On all models, pull
door jamb switch away from pillar enough to disconnect 2 harness
connectors. To install, reverse removal procedure.
DOOR LOCK CYLINDER SWITCH
Removal & Installation (Ram Pickup)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove inside door panel.
Remove door outside latch handle mounting hardware and linkage. Pull
door outside handle away from door far enough to remove door lock
cylinder switch from back of door lock cylinder. See Fig. 4. Remove

affected.
INACTIVE DTC CONDITION
This procedure applies if you have been sent here from a
diagnostic test and/or have just attempted to simulate the condition
that initially set the DTC. The following additional checks may assist
in identifying a possible intermittent problem:
* Visually inspect related wiring harness connectors for
broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
* Visually inspect related wiring harnesses for chafed, pierced
or partially broken wires.
* Check for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) relating to the
problem.
NOTE: For circuit description and wire color information, see
WIRING DIAGRAMS.

6) Disconnect PNP switch harness connector. Measure
resistance of PNP switch sense circuit between Black PCM harness
connector C1 and PNP switch harness connector. If resistance is less
than 5 ohms, replace PNP switch. If resistance is not as specified,
repair open in PNP switch sense circuit.
7) Conditions required to set DTC P1899 are not present at
this time. Using scan tool, check and record FREEZE FRAME data. Ensure
"CAUSED BY DTC" "P" code matches code on DTC screen. Using wiring
diagram as a guide, inspect wiring and connectors. Repair wiring
harness as necessary. If wiring and connectors are okay, does not
reset, see INACTIVE DTC CONDITION under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
Testing is complete.
TEST VER-2A (EXCEPT DIESEL)
NOTE: If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is replaced, correct
vehicle mileage and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) must
be programmed into PCM to prevent Diagnostic Trouble Codes
(DTCs) from being set in Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) modul\
e
and Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) module. To program
PCM and clear DTCs from ABS and SRS modules, proceed to
appropriate procedure listed below. On models equipped with a
Smart Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM), if replacing Powertrain
Control Module (PCM), secret key data must also be updated to\
enable engine starting. To update secret key data, proceed to
appropriate procedure listed below.
Procedure For Programming PCM & Clearing DTCs From ABS & SRS
Modules
Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using scan
tool, enter correct VIN and mileage into PCM. Using scan tool
manufacturer's instructions, clear DTCs from ABS and SRS modules. Go
to step 1)).
Procedure For Updating Secret Key Data
Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Go to ENGINE
and then MISC menus on scan tool. Place SKIM in SECURED ACCESS MODE by
using appropriate Personal Identification Number (PIN) for this
vehicle. PIN may be obtained from owner, vehicle's invoice, or from
manufacturer. Select UPDATE THE SECRET KEY DATA. Data will be
transferred from Smart Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) to PCM. Go to
step 1)).
1) Inspect vehicle to ensure all engine components are
connected. Reassemble and reconnect components as necessary. If test
is being performed after performing a NO TROUBLE CODE (NTC) test, go
to next step. If test is being performed after performing an OBD-II
TROUBLE CODE test, perform TEST VER-5A. If test is being performed
after any other TROUBLE CODE test, go to step 3).
2) Check if initial symptom still exists. If initial or
another symptom exists, repair is not complete. Check for Technical
Service Bulletins (TSBs) that apply to symptom and see appropriate
TEST NTC-1A: NO TROUBLE CODE TEST MENU in ENGINE PERFORMANCE, or
appropriate TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE
for diagnosis by symptom. If initial symptom no longer exists, test is
complete. Go to step 8).
3) If any DTCs have not been diagnosed, perform appropriate
test(s) see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
If all DTCs have been diagnosed and repaired, go to next step.
4) If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has not been replaced,\
use scan tool to clear DTCs from PCM. Using scan tool, reset all
values in adaptive memory. To ensure no other DTCs remain, go to next
step.

5) If PCM has not been replaced, and TEST VER-2A is being
performed after an A/C relay control circuit DTC test, ensure A/C is
on and go to next step.
6) Road test vehicle for at least 5 minutes. Road test
vehicle at a speed of at least 40 MPH at some point during road test.
Stop vehicle. Turn engine off for at least 10 seconds. Start engine
and continue road test. Ensure transmission shifts through all gears.
After road test, turn engine off and go to next step.
7) Using scan tool, read DTCs. If any DTC returns, perform
appropriate test(s). If no DTCs return, test is complete. Go to next
step.
8) Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, erase
DTCs. Turn ignition off. Disconnect scan tool. Test is complete.
TEST VER-2A (DIESEL)
NOTE: If Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (APPS), battery, Engine
Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has\
been disconnected or replaced, APPS must be reprogrammed and
correct vehicle mileage and Vehicle Identification Number
(VIN) must be programmed into PCM to prevent Diagnostic
Trouble Codes (DTCs) from being set in Anti-Lock Brake System\
(ABS) module and Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) module\
.
To program PCM and clear DTCs from ABS and SRS modules,
proceed to appropriate procedure listed below. On models
equipped with a Smart Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM), if
replacing Powertrain Control Module (PCM), secret key data
must also be updated to enable engine starting. To update
secret key data, proceed to appropriate procedure listed
below.

are preset at factory and are not intended to by changed.
Procedure For Programming APPS
Reassemble all components. Turn ignition switch to ON or RUN
position without starting engine. Slowly press accelerator pedal to
floor once and slowly release. This procedure programs APPS
calibration in ECM. Go to step 1)).
Procedure For Programming PCM & Clearing DTCs From ABS & SRS
Modules
Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using scan
tool, enter correct VIN and mileage into PCM. Using scan tool
manufacturer's instructions, clear DTCs from ABS and SRS modules. Go
to step 1)).

being performed after a No Trouble Code (NTC) test, inspect vehicle to\
ensure all engine components are connected. Reassemble and reconnect
components as necessary. Check if initial symptom still exists. If
initial symptom exists, check for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs)
that apply to vehicle and see TEST NTC-1A: NO TROUBLE CODE TEST MENU
in ENGINE PERFORMANCE, or appropriate TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES

4) Using scan tool, monitor pretest enabling conditions until
all conditions have been met. Once all enabling conditions are met,
observe appropriate monitor for DTC on scan tool. If repaired DTC has
reset or is seen on monitor while on road test, repair is not
complete. Check for related Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) and
return to appropriate test. If no DTCs return, test is complete. Go to
step 6).
5) If another DTC exists, return to appropriate test(s). If
no DTCs return, test is complete. Go to next step.
6) Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, erase
DTCs. Turn ignition off. Disconnect scan tool. Test is complete.
TEST VER-5A (DIESEL)
NOTE: If Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (APPS), battery, Engine
Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has\
been disconnected or replaced, APPS must be reprogrammed and
correct vehicle mileage and Vehicle Identification Number

all engine components are connected. Reassemble and reconnect
components as necessary. If any DTCs have not been diagnosed, return
to appropriate test(s). If all DTCs have been diagnosed and repaired,
go to next step.
2) Ensure fuel tank is at least 1/4 full. Ensure A/C is off.
Proper way to ensure DTC is repaired is to connect scan tool to Data
Link Connector (DLC) and allow Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to ru\
n
a DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP COUNTER for 2 minutes. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD

VISUAL INSPECTION
1) Check Water-In-Fuel (WIF) sensor electrical connector for\
corrosion, damaged terminals or wiring and tight fit on engine wiring
harness. WIF sensor is located in bottom of fuel filter/water
separator. See Fig. 1.
2) Check for water in fuel filter/water separator by placing
drain pan below drain tube at fuel filter/water separator. See Fig. 1.
3) With engine not running, rotate handle on drain valve
forward, toward front of vehicle to OPEN position. Drain valve is
located near top of fuel filter/water separator. See Fig. 1. Drain
water from fuel filter/water separator.
4) If no water exists and a clean flow of diesel fuel exists,
rotate handle on drain valve back to CLOSE position. Go to next step.
If water exists, allow water to drain until clean flow of diesel fuel
exists. Rotate handle on drain valve back to CLOSE position. Go to
next step.
5) Verify fuel filter/water separator has been serviced
according to proper service schedule. See SERVICE & ADJUSTMENT
SPECIFICATIONS - TRUCKS article.
6) Check color of Filter Minder. Filter Minder is located on
top cover on air filter housing, just above air filter. DO NOT remove
air filter from air filter housing for inspection. If Yellow disc in
Filter Minder has reached Red zone, remove and inspect air filter. See
Fig. 2 . If air filter is dirty, replace air filter and reset Filter
Minder by pressing rubber button on top of Filter Minder.
NOTE: The Yellow disc in Filter Minder may reach Red zone if air
intake is restricted or air filter has become wet during
heavy rain or snow. If air filter has become wet, allow air
filter to dry during normal engine operation and reset Filter
Minder by pressing rubber button on top of Filter Minder.
7) Ensure intercooler inlet and outlet duct clamps are tight
and front of intercooler is not restricted with dirt. See Fig. 3.
