10 IntroductionOperating safetyDo not allow the electronically stored to-
tal distance covered by your vehicle to
be modified as a result of tampering with
the electronics system.
This type of modification or failing to in-
form the buyer when selling the vehicle
could constitute an offense punishable
by law, depending on the country con-
cerned.Having the engine power output of your
vehicle increased by tampering with the
electronic engine management system
will invalidate the vehicle’s general oper-
ating permit and insurance coverage, as
well as your warranty and warranty enti-
tlement.
Modifications to the output of the engine
must be reported to the insurance pro-
vider and require the vehicle to be recer-
tified. The tires, chassis, brake and
cooling systems must be adapted to the
increased engine power output.Tampering with the electronic engine
management system modifies emission
values and it will not be possible to guar-
antee the operating safety of the engine
in every case. Increases in performance
may lead to malfunctions and conse-
quential damage to other assemblies.
If you sell the vehicle, failing to inform
the buyer of the modified engine power
output could constitute an offense pun-
ishable by law, depending on the country
concerned.Digital speedometer and total

Your vehicle is equipped with either\4
an air-conditioning system and pos-
sibly additional air conditioning in
the rear*
or
\4
a heater* and possibly additional
rear heating* The air-conditioning system is only oper-
ational while the engine is running. You
can use the air-conditioning system to
regulate or control the temperature au-
tomatically. The vehicle is either heated
or cooled, depending on the tempera-
ture selected and the outside tempera-
ture.
The combination filter removes most
dust particles, pollen and unpleasant
odors from the outside air.

The interval for replacing the filter de-
pends on environmental factors, e.g.
high air pollution. The interval may be
shorter than that indicated in the Ser-
vice Booklet.
iCondensation may collect under the
vehicle while Tempmatic is in opera-
tion.
Warning
G
Air flowing out of the air vents in the foot-
well when Tempmatic is in operation may
be very hot or very cold. There is therefore
a risk of frostbite or burns to bare skin in
the immediate proximity of these outlets.
Keep bare skin away from these air out-
lets. If necessary, direct the airflow into a
different area of the vehicle interior using
the air distribution control.
iIf the vehicle interior has been heat-
ed up, ventilate the vehicle before
starting your journey or briefly
switch to air-recirculation mode for
faster cooling.
Keep the air inlet on the hood free
from ice and snow.
Position the sliders for the center air
vents in the central position to pro-
vide practically draft-free ventilation.

Alter the air distribution by turning
the air vents.
The heater is operational when the engi-
ne is running. Depending on the tempe-
rature selected and the outside
temperature, it heats or ventilates.
The dust filter removes most dust partic-
les and pollen from the outside air. The interval for replacing the filter de-
pends on environmental factors, e.g.
high air pollution. The interval may be
shorter than that indicated in the Ser-
vice Booklet.!
CAUTION
Never close all the air vents, other-
wise there is a risk of damage to the
air-conditioning system in the rear
compartment.

Warning
G
Follow the settings recommended on the
following pages for heating or cooling.
The windows could otherwise fog up. As a
result, you could be distracted from road
and traffic conditions and cause an acci-
dent.
Warning
G
Air flowing out of the air vents in the foot-
well when the heater is in operation may
be very hot. There is, therefore, a risk of
burns to bare skin in the immediate proxi-
mity of these outlets. Keep bare skin away
from these air outlets. If necessary, direct
the airflow into a different area of the ve-
hicle interior using the air distribution
control.

Warning
G
When opening the coolant expansion tank
there is a risk of scalding from hot coolant
spraying out. The cooling system and the
coolant expansion tank are pressurized
when the engine is at normal operating
temperature.
Wear gloves and eye protection. Only
open the coolant expansion tank when
the coolant temperature is less than
122 °F (50 °C).
Warning
G
Coolant contains glycol and is therefore
toxic. Do not swallow coolant. Consult a
doctor immediately if any coolant is swal-
lowed.
Do not allow coolant to come into contact
with your skin, eyes or clothing. In the
event of contact with the eyes, rinse them
thoroughly with clean water. Clean skin
and clothes immediately with soap and
water. Change out of soiled clothing with-
out delay.
!
CAUTION
Check the cooling and heating sys-
tems regularly for leaks. If a large
quantity of coolant is lost, have the
cause traced and rectified at an au-
thorized Sprinter Dealer.

/
The yellow coolant level
warning lamp lights up while
the engine is running.
The coolant level is too low.
Never run the engine if the coolant level is too low.
The engine could overheat and be damaged.
\1Stop at the earliest opportunity.
\1Switch off the engine to cool down.
\1Check the coolant level and add coolant
as necessary (\2page 329).
\1If you are having to add coolant fre-
quently, have the cooling system
checked at an authorized Sprinter Deal-
er.

\1Do not drive any further.
\1Consult an authorized Sprinter Dealer.
If the vehicle is switched off after being
subjected to extreme loads (for example driving
in mountainous terrain, trailer towing, etc.), this
message may be displayed when the ignition is
switched on or the engine is restarted. Run the
engine for approximately 1 minute at idling
speed.
Consult an authorized Sprinter Dealer if the
message remains displayed.

Whenever the coolant is replaced, a concentration of 50% by volume of corrosion inhibitor/antifreeze should be maintained. This
provides antifreeze protection down to -34,6 °F (-37 °C).
Do not exceed a concentration of 55% by volume (antifreeze protection down to approximately -49 °F (-45 °C)), as the heat dissi-
pation properties deteriorate at higher concentrations.
