FOREWORD
The Start&Stopdevice automatically stops
the engine each time the vehicle is stationary
and starts it again when the driver is about to
engage a gear.
This improves the efficiency of the vehicle by
reducing consumption, the emission of harm-
ful gases and noise pollution.
The system is activated each time the car is
started

OPERATING MODES
Engine cut out mode
With manual transmission
With the vehicle stationary, the engine cuts out
with the gearbox in neutral and the clutch ped-
al released.
With robotized transmission
The engine cuts out if the car stops with the
brake pedal pressed.
This condition can be maintained even if the
brake pedal is not pressed, if the gear lever is
in position N.
Note:The engine can only be stopped auto-
matically after a speed of about 10 Km/h is
reached, to prevent the engine from being re-
peatedly stopped when driving at walking pace.
The engine being stopped is signalled by the
warning light fig. 1in the instrument panel, de-
pending on the trim level.
Engine restarting mode
With normal transmission
Press the clutch pedal to allow the engine to
be restarted.
With robotized transmission
If the gear lever is in position N, place it in any
other gear, otherwise release the brake pedal
or move the gear lever to (+), (–) or R.MANUAL ACTIVATION AND
DEACTIVATION
The device can be activated/deactivated via the
button in the dashboard A-fig. 2. When the
system is deactivated the “Start&Stop OFF”
warning light is visible in the dashboard fig. 3.
In addition, on some versions additional infor-
mation concerning the deactivation or activa-
tion of the Start&Stop is given through a mes-
sage in the display

NO ENGINE CUT
OUT CONDITIONS
With the device activated, for reasons of com-
fort, limiting emissions and safety, the power unit
does not stop in certain conditions, including:
❒ engine still cold;
❒ battery not sufficiently charged;
❒ heated rear windscreen activated;
❒ windscreen wipers working at maximum
speed;
❒ particulate filter regeneration in progress
(diesel engines only);
❒ driver’s door not shut;
❒ driver’s seat belt not fastened;
❒ reverse gear engaged (for example, for park-
ing manoeuvres);
❒ automatic climate control, if a suitable ther-
mal comfort level has not yet been reached.
❒ during the first period of use, to initialize the
system
In the above cases there is an information mes-
sage in the display and, where provided, the
warning light fig. 1will flash in the instrument
panel.RESTARTING CONDITIONS
For reasons of comfort, limiting pollutant emis-
sions and safety purposes, the power unit can
restart automatically without any action on be-
half of the driver if certain conditions are met,
including:
❒ battery not sufficiently charged;
❒ windscreen wipers working at maximum
speed;
❒ reduced braking system vacuum, e.g. fol-
lowing the brake pedal being pressed re-
peatedly;
❒ car moving, for example in cases when dri-
ving on roads with a gradient;
❒ stopping the engine through the Start&Stop
system for more than about three minutes.
With a gear engaged, the automatic restarting
of the engine is only permitted by fully de-
pressing the clutch pedal. The driver is asked
to perform this operation through a message
in the instrument panel and, where provided,
by the warning light fig. 1 in the instrument
panel flashing
Note:If the clutch is not pressed, when the
three minutes have elapsed since the engine
was stopped, the engine can only be restart-
ed using the key.
Note:In cases when the engine stops and this
is not desired, due for example to the clutch ped-
al being released sharply with a gear engaged, if
the Start&Stop system is activated, the engine
can be restarted by fully depressing the clutch
pedal or by placing the gear lever in neutral.SAFETY FUNCTIONS
In engine cut out conditions through the
Start&Stop system, if the driver unfastens their
seat belt and opens the driver’s door or the
passenger door, the engine can only be restart-
ed using the key.
The driver is notified of this condition both
by a buzzer and through an information mes-
sage in the display and, where provided, by the
warning light fig. 1in the instrument panel
flashing.
ENERGY SAVING FUNCTION
(For certain versions/markets)
If, after the engine has been automatically
restarted, the driver does not take any action
for a period of about 3 minutes, the Start&Stop
system will definitively stop the engine to avoid
fuel consumption. The engine can only be start-
ed using the key in such cases.
Note:In any case it is possible to keep the en-
gine running by deactivating the Start&Stop sys-
tem.
OPERATING IRREGULARITIES
In the case of malfunctions the Start&Stopsystem
is disabled.The driver is informed of the prob-
lem by the general failure warning light A-fig.
4, where provided, coming on with an infor-
mation message and the system failure sym-
bol B-fig. 4in the control panel.
In this case, go to a Fiat Dealership.

INACTIVITY OF THE CAR fig. 5
In the case of inactivity of the car, special care
must be taken to disconnect the battery elec-
trical power supply. This procedure is carried
out by disconnect the rapid release negative
terminal Afrom the negative false pole Bbe-
cause there is a battery status monitoring sen-
sor Dat the negative battery pole Cwhich
should never be disconnected except if the ac-
tual battery is replaced.
If the battery is replaced, always
go to a Fiat Dealer. Replace the
battery with one of the same type (HEAVY
DUTY) and with the same specifications.
WARNING
EMERGENCY STARTING fig. 6
In the case of emergency starting with an auxil-
iary battery, never connect the negative lead (–)
of the auxiliary battery to the negative pole Cof
the car battery, but rather to either the false pole
Bor to an engine/gearbox earth pointfig. 5

IMPORTANT NOTES
Before opening the bonnet, make
sure that the car is switched off
and the key is in the OFF position. Follow
the instructions on the plate near the front
crossmember fig. 7. It is advisable to extract
the key when there are other people in the
car. The car should always be left after the
key has been removed or turned to the OFF
position. During refuelling operations, it is
necessary to make sure that the car is off
with the ignition key in the OFF position.
WARNING
For cars with a robotized transmis-
sion, if the engine cuts out automat-
ically on a gradient, it is advisable to restart the
engine operating the gear lever towards (+) or
(–) without releasing the brake pedal. For vehi-
cles with robotized transmission where the Hill
Holder function is present, if the engine cuts out
automatically whilst driving uphill, it is advisable
to restart it by operating the gear lever towards
(+) or towards (–) without releasing the brake
pedal to make the Hill Holder function available.
WARNING
If you want to make the most of
climate comfort, the Start&Stop
system can be disabled to allow continu-
ous operation of the climate control system.
