STARTING THE ENGINE
STARTING A GASOLINE ENGINE -MANUAL TRANSMISSION
Before starting your vehicle, check thefollowing:
•Make sure the headlamps andelectrical accessories are off.
•Make sure the parking brake is on.
•Make sure the transmission is inneutral.
1.Fully press the clutch pedal.
Note:Do not touch the accelerator pedal.
2.Press the push button ignition switch.
Note:The engine may continue crankingfor up to 15 seconds or until it starts.
Note:The engine takes longer to start atlower temperatures. It may crank for severalseconds when very cold.
STARTING A GASOLINE ENGINE -AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Before starting your vehicle, check thefollowing:
•Make sure that the headlamps andelectrical accessories are off.
•Make sure that the parking brake is on.
•Make sure that the transmission is inpark (P).

2.Press the push button ignition switch.

RESTARTING THE ENGINE AFTERSTOPPING IT
The system allows you to start the enginewithin 10 seconds of switching it off, evenif it does not detect a valid passive key.
Within 10 seconds of switching the engineoff, fully press the brake or clutch pedaland press the push button ignition switch.After 10 seconds, you can no longer startthe engine if the system does not detect avalid passive key.

Look ahead on your route noting upcomingobstacles, surface texture or color changesor any other factors which may indicate achange in available traction. Adjust thevehicle speed and route to avoid a loss intraction. Conditions can change causingthe course to vary day to day. Markobstacles with GPS markers to avoidpotential vehicle damage. Wherenecessary, get out of your vehicle andcheck the terrain.
When driving off-road, if the front or rearsuspension is bottoming-out or excessivecontact with the skid-plates is happening,reduce the vehicle's speed to avoidpotential damage to your vehicle.
If you are driving in a dusty area, be sure toleave ample distance between your vehicleand any other vehicles to allow foradequate vision.
When driving off-road verify that yourwipers and washers are working properlyand reduce your speed for better visibility.
When driving in desert conditions, werecommend driving with your headlampson to help other drivers easily see you.
When convoying with other vehicles, werecommend that communication is used,and the lead vehicle notify other vehiclesof upcoming obstacles.
Keep available ground clearance in mindand pick a route that minimizes the risk ofcatching the underside of the vehicle onan obstacle.
When negotiating low speed obstacles,applying light brake pressure in conjunctionwith the throttle allows you to negotiatethe obstacle in a more controlled manner.
Driving off-road requires a high amount ofconcentration. Even if your local law doesnot prohibit drinking alcohol when drivingoff-road we do not recommend it.
DRIVING OFF-ROAD
Driving In Snow and Ice
WARNING: If you are driving inslippery conditions that require tirechains or cables, then it is critical thatyou drive cautiously. Keep speeds down,allow for longer stopping distances andavoid aggressive steering to reduce thechances of a loss of vehicle controlwhich can lead to serious injury or death.If the rear end of your vehicle slides whilecornering, steer in the direction of theslide until you regain control of yourvehicle.
Four-wheel drive vehicles have advantagesover two-wheel drive vehicles in snow andice but can skid like any other vehicle. Ifyour vehicle slides when driving on snowyor icy roads, turn the steering wheel in thedirection of the slide until you regaincontrol. Avoid sudden applications ofpower and quick changes of direction onsnow and ice. Slowly and steadily applythe accelerator when starting from a fullstop. Avoid sudden braking.
WARNING: Do not becomeoverconfident in the ability of four-wheeldrive vehicles. Although a four-wheeldrive vehicle may accelerate better thana two-wheel drive vehicle in low tractionsituations, it won't stop any faster thantwo-wheel drive vehicles. Always driveat a safe speed.
Make sure you allow sufficient distancebetween your vehicle and other vehiclesfor stopping.
In emergency stopping situations, do notpump the brake pedal, apply the brakefirmly.

Starting the Engine
1.Start the engine of the booster vehicleand moderately rev the engine, orgently press the accelerator to keepthe engine speed between 2000 and3000 RPM, as shown in yourtachometer.
2.Start the engine of the disabled vehicle.
3.Once you start the disabled vehicle, runboth vehicle engines for an additionalthree minutes before disconnecting thejumper cables.
Removing the Jumper Cables
Remove the jumper cables in the reverseorder that they were connected.
Note:Do not switch the headlamps onwhen disconnecting the cables. The peakvoltage could blow the bulbs.
POST-CRASH ALERT SYSTEM
WHAT IS THE POST-CRASHALERT SYSTEM
The system helps draw attention to yourvehicle in the event of a serious impact.
HOW DOES THE POST-CRASHALERT SYSTEM WORK
The system is designed to turn the hazardflashers on and to intermittently sound thehorn in the event of a serious impact thatdeploys an airbag or the seatbeltpretensioners.
POST-CRASH ALERT SYSTEMLIMITATIONS
Depending on applicable laws in thecountry your vehicle was built for, the horndoes not sound in the event of a seriousimpact.
SWITCHING THE POST-CRASHALERT SYSTEM OFF
Press the hazard flasher switch or theunlock button on the remote control toswitch the system off.
Note:The alert turns off when the vehiclebattery runs out of charge.
POST IMPACT BRAKING
HOW DOES POST IMPACTBRAKING WORK
In the event of a moderate to severe crash,the braking system reduces the vehicle’sspeed in order to prevent or reduce theimpact of a potential secondary crash.
POST IMPACT BRAKINGLIMITATIONS
Post impact braking does not activate ifany of the following occur:
•The anti-lock braking system isdamaged during the collision.
•Electronic stability control is disabled.

HOW DOES THE BATTERYMANAGEMENT SYSTEM WORK
If excessive battery drain is detected, thesystem temporarily disables someelectrical systems to protect the battery.
Systems included are:
•Heated rear window.
•Heated seats.
•Climate control.
•Heated steering wheel.
•Audio unit.
•Navigation system.
A message could appear in the informationdisplay to alert you that battery protectionactions are active. This message is only fornotification that an action is taking place,and not intended to indicate an electricalproblem or that the battery requiresreplacement.
BATTERY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMLIMITATIONS
After battery replacement, or in somecases after charging the battery with anexternal charger, the battery managementsystem requires eight hours of vehicle sleeptime to relearn the battery state of charge.During this time, your vehicle must remainfully locked with the ignition switched off.
Note:Prior to relearning the battery stateof charge, the battery management systemcould temporarily disable some electricalsystems.
Electrical Accessory Installation
To make sure the battery managementsystem works correctly, do not connect anelectrical device ground connectiondirectly to the battery negative post. Thiscan cause inaccurate measurements ofthe battery condition and potentialincorrect system operation.
Note:If you add electrical accessories orcomponents to the vehicle, it couldadversely affect battery performance anddurability. This could also affect theperformance of other electrical systems inthe vehicle.
RESETTING THE BATTERYSENSOR
When you install a new battery, reset thebattery sensor by doing the following:
1.Switch the ignition on, and leave theengine off.
Note:Complete Steps 2 and 3 within 10seconds.
2.Flash the high beam headlamps fivetimes, ending with the high beams off.
3.Press and release the brake pedal threetimes.
The battery warning lamp flashes threetimes to confirm that the reset issuccessful.
RECYCLING AND DISPOSING OFTHE 12V BATTERY
Make sure that you dispose ofold batteries in anenvironmentally friendly way.Seek advice from your local authorityabout recycling old batteries.

ADJUSTING THE HEADLAMPS
Vertical Aim Adjustment
The headlamps on your vehicle areproperly aimed at the assembly plant. Ifyour vehicle has been in an accident,contact an authorized dealer to check andrealign your headlamps.

1.Park your vehicle directly in front of awall or screen on a level surface,approximately 25 ft (7.6 m) away.
2.Measure the height from the center ofyour headlamp, indicated by a 3millimeter circle on the lens, to theground and mark an 8 ft (2.4 m)horizontal reference line on the verticalwall or screen at this height, a piece ofmasking tape works well.
3.Switch on the low beam headlamps toilluminate the wall or screen and openthe hood. Cover one of the headlampsso no light hits the wall.
4.On the wall or screen, observe a lightpattern with a distinct horizontal edgetoward the right. If this edge is not atthe horizontal reference line, adjust thebeam so the edge is at the same heightas the horizontal reference line.
5.Locate the vertical adjuster on eachheadlamp. Use a #2 Phillipsscrewdriver to turn the adjuster eithercounterclockwise or clockwise in orderto adjust the vertical aim of theheadlamp.
6.Repeat Steps 3 through 7 to adjust theother headlamp.

7.Close the hood and turn off the lamps.
Horizontal Aim Adjustment
Horizontal aim is not required for thisvehicle and is not adjustable.

REMOVING A REAR LAMPASSEMBLY
1.Make sure the headlamps are off.
2.Loosen the quarter-turn fastener onthe rearmost fender flare.
3.Fully open the tailgate. See Openingthe Tailgate From Outside YourVehicle (page 84).
4.Remove the three pushpins from insidethe trim panel.
5.Remove the lower trim piece bydisengaging the retaining tabs. Pullfrom the inside edge first, then pullfrom the outside edge.
6.Remove the lower retaining bolt fromthe inside trim piece. Pull on the lowerpart of the trim piece to disengage theupper retaining clips.
