HOW DOES STABILITY
CONTROL WORK
WARNING: Vehicle modificationsinvolving braking system, aftermarketroof racks, suspension, steering system,tire construction and wheel and tire sizemay change the handling characteristicsof your vehicle and may adversely affectthe performance of the electronicstability control system. In addition,installing any stereo speakers mayinterfere with and adversely affect theelectronic stability control system.Reducing the effectiveness of theelectronic stability control system couldlead to an increased risk of loss of vehiclecontrol, vehicle rollover, personal injuryand death.
WARNING: Remember that evenadvanced technology cannot defy thelaws of physics. It's always possible tolose control of a vehicle due toinappropriate driver input for theconditions. Aggressive driving on anyroad condition can cause you to losecontrol of your vehicle increasing the riskof personal injury or property damage.Activation of the electronic stabilitycontrol system is an indication that atleast some of the tires have exceededtheir ability to grip the road; this couldreduce the operator's ability to controlthe vehicle potentially resulting in a lossof vehicle control, vehicle rollover,personal injury and death.

If a driving condition activates either thestability control or the traction controlsystem you may experience the followingconditions:
•The stability and traction control lightflashes.
•Your vehicle slows down.
•Reduced engine power.
The stability control system has severalfeatures built into it to help you maintaincontrol of your vehicle:
Electronic Stability Control
Electronic stability control enhances yourvehicle’s ability to prevent skids or lateralslides by applying brakes to one or moreof the wheels individually and, if necessary,reducing engine power.
Roll Stability Control
Roll stability control enhances yourvehicle’s ability to prevent rollovers bydetecting your vehicle’s roll motion andthe rate at which it changes by applyingthe brakes to one or more wheelsindividually.
Curve Control
Curve control enhances your vehicle’sability to follow the road when corneringseverely or avoiding objects in the roadway.Curve control operates by reducing enginepower and, if necessary, applying brakesto one or more of the wheels individually.

STEERING – FREQUENTLY ASKEDQUESTIONS
Why does it seem that the steering iswandering or pulling?
Check your vehicle for an improperlyinflated or uneven tire, loose or wornsuspension or steering components,or improper vehicle alignment.
The system is functioning properly andthe components have been checked,why is the steering system continuingto pull or wander?
A high crown in the road or crosswindscould make the steering system feellike it is wandering or pulling.

WHAT IS G.O.A.T. MODE
CONTROL
Your vehicle has several goes overany-type of terrain (G.O.A.T.) modes thatyou can select for different drivingconditions. Depending on the mode thatyou select, the system adjusts variousvehicle settings.
HOW DOES G.O.A.T. MODE
CONTROL WORK
Each selectable mode changes variouselectronic and mechanical settings withinyour vehicle to tailor its performance anddriving characteristics to on-road oroff-road driving conditions. The systemmay alter steering feel and effort, tractioncontrol, stability control, chassis controls,powertrain response, transmission shiftpoints, four-wheel driveline setting,exhaust noise level and suspensiondampening to predetermined settings,depending upon the mode that you select.
The system reverts to the normal modeeach time you start your vehicle. At startupthe system also displays a prompt on theinstrument cluster display that gives youthe option to return to the previouslyselected drive mode during the last ignitioncycle. If you select yes, the system returnsto the last selected drive mode and thedefault driveline settings associated withthat mode. If you select no or do not makea selection within a short time, the systemremains in normal mode and the drivelinesettings remain the same as selected inthe prior ignition cycle.
Note:Your vehicle has diagnostic checksthat continuously monitor all systems forproper operation. If a mode is unavailabledue to a system fault, your vehicle defaultsto normal mode and the driveline remainsin the four-wheel drive setting that you lastselected prior to the system fault.
SELECTING A G.O.A.T. MODE
To select a mode, use the consolemounted controller.
Note:Mode changes will not be availablewhen the ignition is off or when the engineis not running.

WHAT IS THE LANE KEEPING
SYSTEM
The lane keeping system alerts you byproviding temporary steering assistanceor steering wheel vibration when it detectsan unintended lane departure.
HOW DOES THE LANE
KEEPING SYSTEM WORK
The lane keeping system uses a forwardlooking camera mounted on the windshieldto monitor vehicle movement within thetravel lane.
When the camera detects a drift out of thetravel lane, the lane keeping system alertsthe driver by vibrating the steering wheel,or aids the driver by providing a smallsteering input to move the vehicle backinto the travel lane.
The driver can select one of three modes:
•Alert (If Equipped)
•Aid
•Alert + Aid

WARNING: Large contrasts inoutside lighting can limit sensorperformance.
LANE KEEPING SYSTEM
LIMITATIONS
The lane keeping system only operateswhen the vehicle speed is greater than40 mph (64 km/h).
The system works when the camera candetect at least one lane marking.
The lane keeping system may not correctlyoperate in any of the following conditions:
•The lane keeping system does notdetect at least one lane marking.
•You switch the turn signal on.

Why does the vehicle not come back toward the middle of the lane, as expected, in theAid, or Aid + Alert mode?
High cross winds are present.
There is a large road crown.
Rough roads, grooves or shoulder drop-offs.
Heavy, uneven loading of the vehicle or improper tire inflation pressure.
You changed the tires or modified the suspension.

WHAT IS DRIVER ALERT
Driver alert alerts you if it determines thatyou are becoming drowsy or if your drivingdeteriorates.
HOW DOES DRIVER ALERT
WORK
Driver Alert calculates your alertness levelbased on your driving behavior in relationto the lane markings and other factorsthrough use of the front camera sensorbehind the interior mirror.
DRIVER ALERT PRECAUTIONS
WARNING: You are responsible forcontrolling your vehicle at all times. Thesystem is designed to be an aid and doesnot relieve you of your responsibility todrive with due care and attention. Failureto follow this instruction could result inthe loss of control of your vehicle,personal injury or death.
WARNING: Take regular restbreaks if you feel tired. Do not wait forthe system to warn you.
WARNING: Certain driving stylesmay result in the system warning youeven if you are not feeling tired.
WARNING: In cold and severeweather conditions the system may notfunction. Rain, snow and spray can alllimit sensor performance.
WARNING: The system will notoperate if the sensor cannot track theroad lane markings.

DRIVER ALERT LIMITATIONS
Driver alert may not function correctly if:
•The sensor cannot track the road lanemarkings.
•Your vehicle's speed is less thanapproximately 40 mph (65 km/h).

Certain states require functioning trailerbrakes for trailers over a specified weight.Be sure to check state regulations for thisspecified weight.
Ford Motor Company recommendsseparate functioning brake systems fortrailers weighing more than 1,500 lb(680 kg) when loaded.
TOWING A TRAILER
LIMITATIONS
The vehicle's load capacitydesignation is by weight, not byvolume, so you cannot necessarilyuse all available space whenloading a vehicle or trailer.
Note:Your vehicle could havereduced performance whenoperating at high altitudes andwhen heavily loaded or towing a
trailer. When driving at elevation,to match driving performance asperceived at sea level, reduce grossvehicle weight and grosscombination weight by 2% per1,000 ft (300 m) elevation.
LOADING YOUR TRAILER
To help minimize how trailermovement affects your vehiclewhen driving:
•Load the heaviest items closestto the trailer floor.
•Load the heaviest itemscentered between the left andright side trailer tires.
•Load the heaviest items abovethe trailer axles or just slightlyforward toward the trailertongue. Do not allow the finaltrailer tongue weight to goabove or below 10-15% of theloaded trailer weight. Thetrailer tongue weight shouldnever exceed 10% of themaximum towing capacity.
•Select a ball mount with thecorrect rise or drop. When boththe loaded vehicle and trailerare connected, the trailer frameshould be level, or slightlyangled down toward yourvehicle, when viewed from theside.
TRAILER TOWING HINTS -
MANUAL TRANSMISSION
Towing a trailer places an extra load onyour vehicle's engine, transmission, axle,brakes, tires and suspension. Periodicallyinspect these components during and afterany towing operation.
When driving with a trailer or payload, aslight takeoff vibration or shudder may befelt due to the increased payload weight.
Your vehicle may have a temporary orconventional spare tire. A temporary sparetire is different in diameter or width, treadtype, or from a different manufacturer thanthe road tires on your vehicle. Consultinformation on the tire label or SafetyCompliance label for limitations whenusing.

When towing a trailer:
•Obey country specific regulations fortowing a trailer.
•Do not drive faster than 70 mph(113 km/h) during the first 500 mi(800 km).
•Do not make full-throttle starts.
•Check your hitch, electrical connectionsand trailer wheel lug nuts thoroughlyafter you have traveled 50 mi (80 km).
•Place the transmission in neutral (N)when stopped in congested or heavytraffic during hot weather. This will aidin engine and transmission cooling andto help A/C performance.
•Turn off the speed control with heavyloads or in hilly terrain. The speedcontrol may turn off when you aretowing on long, steep slopes.
•Shift to a lower gear when driving downa long or steep hill. Do not continuouslyapply the brakes, as they may overheatand become less effective.
•If your transmission has Grade Assistor Tow/Haul, use this feature whentowing. This provides engine brakingand helps eliminate excessivetransmission shifting for optimum fueleconomy and transmission cooling.
•Your vehicle has AdvanceTrac with rollstability control. When towing a trailer,additional loads could cause theAdvanceTrac system to engage duringcornering maneuvers. Reduce corneringspeeds to make sure that you canmaintain control of the vehicle andtrailer if the AdvanceTrac systemengages.
•Allow more distance for stopping witha trailer attached. Anticipate stops andgradually brake.
•Avoid parking on a slope. However, ifyou must park on a slope. Turn thesteering wheel to point your vehicletires away from traffic flow. Set yourvehicle parking brake. Place thetransmission in a low gear. Place wheelchocks in front and back of the trailerwheels.
Note:Chocks are not included with yourvehicle.

Look ahead on your route noting upcomingobstacles, surface texture or color changesor any other factors which may indicate achange in available traction. Adjust thevehicle speed and route to avoid a loss intraction. Conditions can change causingthe course to vary day to day. Markobstacles with GPS markers to avoidpotential vehicle damage. Wherenecessary, get out of your vehicle andcheck the terrain.
When driving off-road, if the front or rearsuspension is bottoming-out or excessivecontact with the skid-plates is happening,reduce the vehicle's speed to avoidpotential damage to your vehicle.
If you are driving in a dusty area, be sure toleave ample distance between your vehicleand any other vehicles to allow foradequate vision.
When driving off-road verify that yourwipers and washers are working properlyand reduce your speed for better visibility.
When driving in desert conditions, werecommend driving with your headlampson to help other drivers easily see you.
When convoying with other vehicles, werecommend that communication is used,and the lead vehicle notify other vehiclesof upcoming obstacles.
Keep available ground clearance in mindand pick a route that minimizes the risk ofcatching the underside of the vehicle onan obstacle.
When negotiating low speed obstacles,applying light brake pressure in conjunctionwith the throttle allows you to negotiatethe obstacle in a more controlled manner.
Driving off-road requires a high amount ofconcentration. Even if your local law doesnot prohibit drinking alcohol when drivingoff-road we do not recommend it.
DRIVING OFF-ROAD
Driving In Snow and Ice
WARNING: If you are driving inslippery conditions that require tirechains or cables, then it is critical thatyou drive cautiously. Keep speeds down,allow for longer stopping distances andavoid aggressive steering to reduce thechances of a loss of vehicle controlwhich can lead to serious injury or death.If the rear end of your vehicle slides whilecornering, steer in the direction of theslide until you regain control of yourvehicle.
Four-wheel drive vehicles have advantagesover two-wheel drive vehicles in snow andice but can skid like any other vehicle. Ifyour vehicle slides when driving on snowyor icy roads, turn the steering wheel in thedirection of the slide until you regaincontrol. Avoid sudden applications ofpower and quick changes of direction onsnow and ice. Slowly and steadily applythe accelerator when starting from a fullstop. Avoid sudden braking.
WARNING: Do not becomeoverconfident in the ability of four-wheeldrive vehicles. Although a four-wheeldrive vehicle may accelerate better thana two-wheel drive vehicle in low tractionsituations, it won't stop any faster thantwo-wheel drive vehicles. Always driveat a safe speed.
Make sure you allow sufficient distancebetween your vehicle and other vehiclesfor stopping.
In emergency stopping situations, do notpump the brake pedal, apply the brakefirmly.

•As speed increases, look farther aheadof the vehicle so that there is time toreact to oncoming obstacles.Remember that in many off-roadenvironments, obstacles can be hardto see until they are relatively near. Agood strategy is to alternate betweenlooking far ahead and up closer to thefront of your vehicle when driving.
•Remember that you may not be theonly one in a particular recreationalarea. Be aware of others in your area.This is especially true of motorcyclesand all-terrain vehicles that may bemore difficult to spot than a full-sizedvehicle.
•When driving in desert conditions, themidpoint of the day is the most difficulttime to see many of the small ridgesand dips due to flat shadows from thesun being at its highest point. Extremecare should be taken at these times.
•We encourage you to switch onoff-road modes for off-road driving.See G.O.A.T. Mode Control (page242).

OFF-ROAD DRIVING AIDS
Selecting an Off-Road G.O.A.TMode
Using the appropriate drive mode increasesyour vehicle's control. See G.O.A.T. ModeControl (page 242).
Note:Drive modes are selected by usingthe Goes Over Any-type of Terrain G.O.A.T.MODES controller.
Using Four-Wheel Drive
Your vehicle has a four-wheel drive systemthat offers various modes to help youoptimize traction on any off-road surface.See Four-Wheel Drive (page 182).
Using the Stabilizer BarDisconnect
The stabilizer bar disconnect improvessuspension articulation, improving tractionand comfort in rough terrain.
The vehicle's disconnect system ishydraulically actuated.
Your vehicle is capable of disconnectingunder high load. Your vehicle is alsocapable of reconnecting under allconditions.
It is not necessary for the vehicle to be onlevel ground in order to reconnect thestabilizer bar. See Stabilizer BarDisconnect (page 214).
Using the Cameras Off-Road
Use the 360 degree camera to enhanceyour off-road experience. See 360 DegreeCamera (page 229).
