CRASH SENSORS AND
AIRBAG INDICATOR
WARNING
Modifying or adding equipment tothe front end of your vehicle(including frame, bumper, front endbody structure and tow hooks) may affectthe performance of the airbag system, increasing the risk of injury. Do not modifythe front end of your vehicle.
Your vehicle has a collection of crash andoccupant sensors which provideinformation to the restraints controlmodule which deploys (activates) thefront safety belt pretensioners, driverairbag, passenger airbag, knee airbag(s),seat mounted side airbags, and the SafetyCanopy. Based on the type of accident(frontal impact, side impact or rollover)the restraints control module will deploythe appropriate safety devices.
The restraints control module alsomonitors the readiness of the above safetydevices plus the crash and occupantsensors. A warning indicator light in theinstrument cluster indicates the readinessof the safety system. If this warningindicator light is not functioning and thereis another fault within the system, themessage cluster may display an airbagfailure warning. See InformationDisplays (page 93). You will hear fivetones that repeat periodically until yourepair the problem, the warning indicatorlight or both. Routine maintenance of theairbag is not required.
A difficulty with the system is indicated byone or more of the following:
•The readiness light will not illuminateimmediately after the ignition is turnedon.
•The readiness light will either flash orstay lit.
•A series of five beeps will be heard. Thetone pattern will repeat periodicallyuntil the problem, the light or both arerepaired.
If any of these things happen, evenintermittently, have the supplementalrestraint system serviced at an authorizeddealer immediately. Unless serviced, thesystem may not function properly in theevent of a crash.
The safety belt pretensioners and theairbag supplemental restraint system isdesigned to activate when your vehiclesustains frontal or sideways decelerationsufficient to cause the restraints controlmodule to deploy a safety device or whena certain likelihood of a rollover event isdetected by the rollover sensor.
The fact that the safety belt pretensionersor airbags did not activate for both frontseat occupants in a crash does not meanthat something is wrong with the system.Rather, it means the restraints controlmodule determined the accidentconditions (for example, crash severity, belt usage) were not appropriate toactivate these safety devices.
•The design of the front airbags is toactivate only in frontal and near-frontalcrashes (not rollovers, side impacts orrear impacts) unless the crash causessufficient frontal deceleration.
•The safety belt pretensioners aredesigned to activate in frontal,near-frontal, side and rollover crashes.

Charge Assist
The up and down arrows provideinformation about the energy going intoand out of the high voltage battery. The uparrow above the battery indicates batterycharging such as from regenerative braking. The down arrow below the batteryindicates battery discharging to providepower for propulsion or vehicleaccessories.
Regen Active
A circular arrow symbol appears in thecenter of the battery gauge when energyis being recaptured through theregenerative braking system.
This feature can be switched on or off inthe information displays settings menu.See General Information (page 93).
Fuel Gauge:
Note:The fuel gauge may vary slightlywhen your vehicle is moving or on a gradient.
Switch the ignition on. The fuel gauge willindicate approximately how much fuel isleft in the fuel tank. The arrow adjacent tothe fuel pump symbol indicates on whichside of your vehicle the fuel filler door islocated.
The needle should move toward F whenyou refuel your vehicle. If the needle pointsto E after adding fuel, this indicates yourvehicle needs service soon.
After refueling some variability in needleposition is normal:
•It may take a short time for the needleto reach F after leaving the gas station. This is normal and depends upon theslope of pavement at the gas station.
•The fuel amount dispensed into thetank is a little less or more than thegauge indicated. This is normal anddepends upon the slope of pavementat the gas station.
•If the gas station nozzle shuts offbefore the tank is full, try a differentgas pump nozzle.
Low Fuel Reminder
A low fuel reminder triggers when the fuelgauge needle is at 1/16th.

Service Engine Soon
If the service engine soonindicator light stays on after youswitch on the engine, thisindicates that the On-Board Diagnosticssystem (OBD) has detected a malfunctionof the vehicle emissions control system.Refer to On-Board diagnostics (OBD) inthe Fuel and Refueling chapter for moreinformation about having your vehicleserviced. See Emission Control System(page 150).
If the light is blinking, engine misfire isoccurring which could damage yourcatalytic converter. Drive in a moderatefashion (avoid heavy acceleration anddeceleration) and have your vehicleserviced immediately.
WARNING
Under engine misfire conditions, excessive exhaust temperaturescould damage the catalyticconverter, the fuel system, interior floorcoverings or other vehicle components, possibly causing a fire. Have an authorizeddealer service your vehicle immediately.
The service engine soon indicator lightswhen you first switch on the ignition priorto engine start to check the bulb and toindicate whether the vehicle is ready forInspection and Maintenance testing.
Normally, the service engine soon light willstay on until you switch on the engine, thenturn itself off if no malfunctions arepresent. However, if after 15 seconds theservice engine soon light blinks eight times,it means that the vehicle is not ready forInspection and Maintenance testing. SeeEmission Control System (page 150).

AnswerQuestion
Your vehicle's engine and transmission aredesigned to deliver the power you need atthe most efficient engine speed. This maybe higher than expected during heavyaccelerations, and may fluctuate whendriving at a steady speed. These are charac-teristics of the Atkinson engine cycle andthe transmission technology that helpmaximize your hybrid's fuel economy.
Why does my engine rev up so high some-times when I accelerate?
The fan noise comes from a fan locatednext to the high voltage battery pack. Thisfan turns on when the battery requirescooling air. The fan speed, and associatednoise level, will change according to theamount of cooling required to maintaingood performance. Maintaining the batterytemperature at optimal conditions alsoprolongs the useful life of the battery andhelps to achieve better fuel economy.
What is the fan noise I hear from the rearof my hybrid?
Change the engine oil every 10000 miles(16000 kilometers) or once per year undernormal operating conditions.
What is the engine oil change serviceinterval?
Your hybrid vehicle can use E15 (15%ethanol, 85% gasoline) fuel, but you maynotice slightly reduced fuel economybecause ethanol contains less energy pergallon than gasoline. Your hybrid vehicle isnot designed to use E85 (85% ethanol).
Can I put E15 or E85 in my vehicle, and howwill it affect my fuel economy?
The high voltage battery system is designedto last the life of the vehicle and requiresno maintenance.
How long will my high voltage battery last?Does it need maintenance?
There are no provisions for charging thehigh voltage battery from a power supplyexternal to the vehicle. (For C-MAX Energivehicles, the vehicle can be plugged into a110-volt outlet with charge cord provided.)
Can you charge the battery with a plug intoan A/C outlet?
Yes. Your hybrid vehicle can be flat towedwithout modification. See Towing (page190).
Can I tow the hybrid behind my motor homewith all four wheels down?

3. Slowly insert the fuel filler nozzle fullyinto the fuel system, and leave thenozzle fully inserted until pumping iscomplete. Hold the handle higherduring insertion for easier access.
4. Once pumping is complete, slowlyremove the fuel filler nozzle. Allowapproximately five to ten seconds afterpumping fuel before removing the fuelfiller nozzle. This allows residual fuelto drain back into the fuel tank and notspill onto the vehicle.
5. Fully close the fuel filler door until itclicks shut. This permits the fuelsystem to function correctly.
Note:Do not overfill the fuel tank to thepoint that the fuel is able to bypass the fuelfiller nozzle. The overfilled fuel may rundown the drain hole which is below the fuelfiller inlet.
System Warnings
If the fuel filler inlet does not close properlyor if you do not fully close the fuel fillerdoor, a service engine warning lampappears in the information display. At thenext opportunity, do the following:
1. Safely pull off the road.
2. Put the vehicle in park (P) and switchthe ignition off.
3.Fully open the fuel tank filler door untilit engages and remove any visibledebris from the fuel filler inlet.
4.Insert a fuel filler nozzle or the fuel fillerfunnel, provided with your vehicle, several times to dislodge any debrisand allow the inlet to close properly.
5. Fully close the fuel filler door until itclicks shut. This permits the fuelsystem to function correctly.
If this action corrects the problem, themessage may not reset immediately. Itmay take several driving cycles for themessage to turn off. A driving cycleconsists of an engine start-up (after fouror more hours with the engine off) followedby city and highway driving. Continuing todrive with the message on may cause theservice engine soon lamp to turn on aswell.
Easy Fuel™ Capless System -Energi Vehicles Only
Your vehicle has an auto-sealing featurethat locks the fuel tank refueling valve andthe fuel filler door. Before you can refuelyour vehicle, you must press the fuel fillerdoor release button on the instrumentpanel. Pressing the button unlocks the fueltank refueling valve and opens the fuelfiller door.
Note: It can take up to fifteen seconds forthe fuel filler door to open.
