standard friction braking. When the batteryis almost fully charged, the amount ofregenerative braking is limited to avoidovercharging, and the requesteddeceleration is produced by standardfriction braking alone.
Regenerative braking does not take theplace of the standard friction brakes; it onlyassists them. Regenerative braking hasalso been designed to interact with theanti-lock brake system. Regenerativebraking is disabled when the anti-lockbrake system is activated or the battery isfully charged.
HINTS ON DRIVING WITH
ANTI-LOCK BRAKES
Note:When the system is operating, thebrake pedal may pulse and may travelfurther. Maintain pressure on the brakepedal. You may also hear a noise from thesystem. This is normal.
The anti-lock braking system will noteliminate the risks when:
•You drive too closely to the vehicle infront of you.
•Your vehicle is hydroplaning.
•You take corners too fast.
•The road surface is poor.
PARKING BRAKE
WARNING
Always set the parking brake fullyand make sure you shift the gearshiftlever to park (P). Switch the ignitionoff and remove the key whenever you leaveyour vehicle.
Note:Do not press the release button whilepulling the lever up.
To apply the parking brake:
1. Press the foot brake pedal firmly.
2. Pull the parking brake lever up to itsfullest extent.
Note:If you park your vehicle on a hill andfacing uphill, shift the gearshift lever to park(P) and turn the steering wheel away fromthe curb.
Note:If you park your vehicle on a hill andfacing downhill, shift the gearshift lever topark (P) and turn the steering wheel towardthe curb.
To release the parking brake:
1. Press the brake pedal firmly.
2. Pull the lever up slightly.
3. Press the release button and push thelever down.
HILL START ASSIST
WARNINGS
The system does not replace theparking brake. When you leave yourvehicle, always apply the parkingbrake and shift the transmission into park(P) (automatic transmission) or first gear(1) (manual transmission).
You must remain in your vehicle onceyou have activated the system.
During all times, you are responsiblefor controlling your vehicle,supervising the system andintervening, if required.
If the engine is revved excessively, orif a malfunction is detected, thesystem will be deactivated.
The system makes it easier to pull awaywhen your vehicle is on a slope without theneed to use the parking brake.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
The traction control system helps avoiddrive wheel spin and loss of traction.
If your vehicle begins to slide, the systemapplies the brakes to individual wheelsand, when needed, reduces engine powerat the same time. If the wheels spin whenaccelerating on slippery or loose surfaces,the system reduces engine power in orderto increase traction.
USING TRACTION CONTROL
WARNING
The stability and traction controllight illuminates steadily if thesystem detects a failure. Make sureyou did not manually disable the tractioncontrol system using the informationdisplay controls or the switch. If thestability control and traction control lightis still illuminating steadily, have thesystem serviced by an authorized dealerimmediately. Operating your vehicle withthe traction control disabled could lead toan increased risk of loss of vehicle control,vehicle rollover, personal injury and death.
The system automatically turns on eachtime you switch the ignition on.
If your vehicle is stuck in mud or snow,switching traction control off may bebeneficial as this allows the wheels to spin.
Note:When you switch traction control off,stability control remains fully active.
Switching the System Off
When you switch the system off or on, amessage appears in the informationdisplay showing system status.
You can switch the system off by eitherusing the information display controls orthe switch.
Using the Information DisplayControls
You can switch this feature off or on in theinformation display. See GeneralInformation (page 93).
Using a Switch (If Equipped)
Use the traction control switch on theinstrument panel to switch the system offor on.
The switch illuminates when tractioncontrol is off.
System Indicator Lights andMessages
The stability and traction controllight:
•Temporarily illuminates on enginestart-up.
•Flashes when a driving conditionactivates either of the systems.
•Illuminates if a problem occurs in eitherof the systems.
The stability and traction controloff light temporarily illuminateson engine start-up and stays onwhen you switch the traction controlsystem off.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNINGS
Vehicle modifications involvingbraking system, aftermarket roofracks, suspension, steering system,tire construction and wheel and tire sizemay change the handling characteristicsof your vehicle and may adversely affectthe performance of the electronic stabilitycontrol system. In addition, installing anystereo loudspeakers may interfere withand adversely affect the electronic stabilitycontrol system. Install any aftermarketstereo loudspeaker as far as possible fromthe front center console, the tunnel, andthe front seats in order to minimize the riskof interfering with the electronic stabilitycontrol sensors. Reducing theeffectiveness of the electronic stabilitycontrol system could lead to an increasedrisk of loss of vehicle control, vehiclerollover, personal injury and death.
Remember that even advancedtechnology cannot defy the laws ofphysics. It’s always possible to losecontrol of a vehicle due to inappropriatedriver input for the conditions. Aggressivedriving on any road condition can causeyou to lose control of your vehicleincreasing the risk of personal injury orproperty damage. Activation of theelectronic stability control system is anindication that at least some of the tireshave exceeded their ability to grip the road;this could reduce the operator’s ability tocontrol the vehicle potentially resulting ina loss of vehicle control, vehicle rollover,personal injury and death. If your electronicstability control system activates, SLOWDOWN.
The system automatically turns on eachtime you switch the ignition on.
If a driving condition activates either thestability control or the traction controlsystem you may experience the followingconditions:
•The stability and traction control lightflashes.
•Your vehicle slows down.
•Reduced engine power.
•A vibration in the brake pedal.
•The brake pedal is stiffer than usual.
•If the driving condition is severe andyour foot is not on the brake, the brakepedal may move as the systemsapplies higher brake forces.
The stability control system has severalfeatures built into it to help you maintaincontrol of your vehicle:
Electronic Stability Control
The system enhances your vehicle’s abilityto prevent skids or lateral slides byapplying brakes to one or more of thewheels individually and, if necessary,reducing engine power.
Roll Stability Control
The system enhances your vehicle’s abilityto prevent rollovers by detecting yourvehicle’s roll motion and the rate at whichit changes by applying the brakes to oneor more wheels individually.
Traction Control
The system enhances your vehicle’s abilityto maintain traction of the wheels bydetecting and controlling wheel spin. SeeUsing Traction Control (page 167).

Stability Control

When a suitable space is found, the touchscreen displays a message and a chimesounds. Slow down and stop atapproximately position (A), then followthe instructions on the touch screen.
Note:You must observe that the selectedspace remains clear of obstructions at alltimes in the maneuver.
Note:Vehicles with overhanging loads (forexample, a bus or a truck), street furnitureand other items may not be detected byactive park assist. You must make sure theselected space is suitable for parking.
Note:The vehicle should be driven asparallel to other vehicles as possible whilepassing a parking space.
Note:The system always offers the lastdetected parking space (i.e. if the vehicledetects multiple spaces while you aredriving, it offers the last one).
Note:If driven above approximately 22 mph(35 km/h), the touch screen shows amessage to alert you to reduce vehiclespeed.
Automatic Steering into ParkingSpace
Note:If vehicle speed exceeds 6 mph (10km/h), the system switches off and youneed to take full control of the vehicle.
Note:If a maneuver is interrupted beforecompletion, the system switches off. Thesteering wheel position will not indicate theactual position of the steering and you haveto full take control of the vehicle.
When you shift the transmission intoreverse (R), with your hands off the wheel(and nothing obstructing its movement),your vehicle steers itself into the space.The system displays instructions to moveyour vehicle back and forth in the space.

When you think the vehicle is properlyparked, or you hear a solid tone from theparking aid, bring the vehicle to a completestop.
When automatic steering is finished, thetouch screen displays a message indicatingthat the active park assist process is doneand a tone sounds. The driver isresponsible for checking the parking joband making any necessary correctionsbefore putting the transmission in P (Park).
Deactivating the Park AssistFeature
The system can be deactivated manuallyby:
•pressing the active park assist button.
•grabbing the steering wheel duringautomatic steering.
•driving above approximately 22 mph(35 km/h) for 30 seconds during anactive park search.
•driving above 6 mph (10 km/h) duringautomatic steering.
•turning off the traction control system.
Certain vehicle conditions can alsodeactivate the system, such as:
•Traction control has activated on aslippery or loose surface.
•There is an anti-lock brake systemactivation or failure.
•Something touches the steering wheel.
If a problem occurs with the system, awarning message is displayed, followedby a chime. Occasional system messagesmay occur in normal operation. Forrecurring or frequent system faults, contactan authorized dealer to have your vehicleserviced.
Troubleshooting the System
The system does not look for a space
The traction control system may be off.
The transmission is in reverse (R). Your vehicle must be moving forward to be able todetect a parking space.

The system does not offer a particular space
The sensors may be covered (for example snow, ice or dirt buildup). Covered sensorscan affect the system's functionality.
There is not enough space for the parking maneuver on the opposite side of the parkingspace.
The vehicle is farther than 5 ft (1.5 m) from the parking space.
The vehicle is closer than 16 in (40 cm) from the parking space.
Your vehicle is going faster than 22 mph (35 km/h).
The transmission is in reverse (R). Your vehicle must be moving forward to be able todetect a parking space.
The system does not position the vehicle where I want in the space
The vehicle is rolling in the opposite direction of the transmission (i.e. rolling forwardwhen reverse [R] is selected).
An irregular curb along the parking space prevents the system from aligning the vehicleproperly.
Vehicles or objects bordering the space may not be positioned correctly.
The vehicle was pulled too far past the parking space. The system performs best whenyou drive the same distance past the parking space.
The tires may not be installed or maintained correctly (i.e. not inflated correctly, impropersize, or of different sizes).
A repair or alteration has changed detection capabilities.
A parked vehicle has a high attachment (i.e. salt sprayer, snowplow, moving truck bed,etc.).
The parking space length or position of parked objects changed after your vehicle passed.
The temperature around your vehicle changes quickly (i.e. driving from a heated garageinto the cold, or after leaving a car wash).
You didn't wait for the steering wheel to complete its rotation after a gear change. Thesystem performs best when the steering wheel is allowed to finish before accelerating.

Note:When towing, the camera only seeswhat is being towed behind your vehicle.This might not provide adequate coverageas it usually provides in normal operationand some objects might not be seen. Insome vehicles, the guidelines may disappearonce the trailer tow connector is engaged.
Note:The camera may not operatecorrectly under the following conditions:
•Nighttime or dark areas if one or bothreverse lamps are not operating.
•The camera's view is obstructed bymud, water or debris. Clean the lenswith a soft, lint-free cloth andnon-abrasive cleaner.
•The rear of your vehicle is hit ordamaged, causing the camera tobecome misaligned.
To access any of the rear view camerasystem settings, make the followingselections in the display screen when thetransmission is not in reverse (R):
•Menu > Vehicle > Rear View Camera
After changing a system setting, thedisplay screen shows a preview of theselected features.

The fixed and active guidelines fade in andout depending on the steering wheelposition. The active guidelines are notshown when the steering wheel positionis straight.
Always use caution while reversing.Objects in the red zone are closest to yourvehicle and objects in the green zone arefarther away. Objects are getting closer toyour vehicle as they move from the greenzone to the yellow or red zones. Use theside view mirrors and rear view mirror toget better coverage on both sides and rearof your vehicle.
Enhanced Park Aids
Note:The reverse sensing system is noteffective at speeds above 7 mph (12 km/h)and may not detect certain angular ormoving objects.
When the sensing system detects anobject, it displays red, yellow and greenhighlights at the top of the image. The alerthighlights all objects detected.
Selectable settings for this feature are ONand OFF.
Manual Zoom
WARNING
When manual zoom is on, the fullarea behind your vehicle is notshown. Be aware of yoursurroundings when using the manual zoomfeature.
Note:Manual zoom is only available whenthe transmission is in reverse (R).
Note:When manual zoom is enabled, onlythe centerline is shown.
This allows you to get a closer view of anobject behind your vehicle. The zoomedimage keeps the bumper in the image toprovide a reference. The zoom is onlyactive while the transmission is in reverse(R). When the transmission is shifted outof reverse (R), the feature automaticallyturns off and must be reset when it is usedagain.
Selectable settings for this feature are +and -. The default setting for the manualzoom is OFF.
Rear Camera Delay (If Equipped)
When you shift the transmission out ofreverse (R) and into any gear while the rearcamera delay is active, the camera imagedisplays until:
•Your vehicle speed sufficientlyincreases.
•You shift your vehicle into park (P).
Selectable settings for this feature are ONand OFF. The default setting for the rearcamera delay is OFF.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
Cruise control lets you maintain a setspeed without keeping your foot on theaccelerator pedal. You can use cruisecontrol when your vehicle speed is greaterthan 20 mph (30 km/h).
USING CRUISE CONTROL
WARNINGS
Do not use cruise control on windingroads, in heavy traffic or when theroad surface is slippery. This couldresult in loss of vehicle control, seriousinjury or death.
When you are going downhill, yourvehicle speed may increase abovethe set speed. The system will notapply the brakes but a warning displays.Failure to follow this warning could resultin serious personal injury or death.
Note:Cruise control will disengage if thevehicle speed decreases more than 10 mph(16 km/h) below the set speed while drivinguphill.
The cruise controls are on the steeringwheel.
Switching Cruise Control On
Press and release ON.
The indicator appears in theinstrument cluster.
Note:Using cruise control with ECO Cruiseswitched on may change the operation ofthe system. This feature saves vehicleenergy by relaxing acceleration comparedto standard cruise control. For example, yourvehicle may temporarily lose speed whengoing uphill.
Energi vehicles: ECO Cruise can be turnedon or off through the information display.See Information Displays (page 93).
Hybrid vehicles: ECO Cruise is included inEcoSelect which is turned on or off usingthe ECO button on the center console.

Note:When you are going downhill whileusing cruise control, the battery chargingsystem and engine work together to helpmaintain your set speed. Engine noise mayincrease or decrease under these conditions.
Setting the Cruise Speed
1. Drive to desired speed.
2. Press and release SET+ or SET-.
3. Take your foot off the acceleratorpedal.

GCW (Gross Combined Weight)- is the Gross Vehicle Weight plusthe weight of the fully loadedtrailer.
GCWR (Gross CombinedWeight Rating) - is the maximumallowable weight of the vehicleand the loaded trailer, includingall cargo and passengers, that thevehicle can handle without riskingdamage. (Important: The towingvehicle’s braking system is ratedfor operation at Gross VehicleWeight Rating, not at GrossCombined Weight Rating.)Separate functional brakes shouldbe used for safe control of towedvehicles and for trailers where theGross Combined Weight of thetowing vehicle plus the trailerexceed the Gross Vehicle WeightRating of the towing vehicle.TheGross Combined Weight mustnever exceed the GrossCombined Weight Rating.
Maximum Loaded TrailerWeight - is the highest possibleweight of a fully loaded trailer thevehicle can tow. It assumes avehicle with mandatory options,driver and front passenger weight(150 pounds [68 kilograms]each), no cargo weight (internalor external) and a tongue load of10–15% (conventional trailer) orking pin weight of 15–25% (fifthwheel trailer). Consult anauthorized dealer (or the RV andTrailer Towing Guide available at
an authorized dealer) for moredetailed information.
Tongue Load or Fifth WheelKing Pin Weight - refers to theamount of the weight that a trailerpushes down on a trailer hitch.
Examples: For a 5000 pound(2268 kilogram) conventionaltrailer, multiply 5000 by 0.10 and0.15 to obtain a proper tongueload range of 500 to 750 pounds(227 to 340 kilograms). For an11500 pound (5216 kilogram) fifthwheel trailer, multiply by 0.15 and0.25 to obtain a proper king pinload range of 1725 to 2875 pounds(782 to 1304 kilograms).
WARNINGS
Do not exceed the GVWR orthe GAWR specified on theSafety Compliance CertificationLabel.
Do not use replacement tireswith lower load carryingcapacities than the original tiresbecause they may lower thevehicle’s GVWR and GAWRlimitations. Replacement tireswith a higher limit than the originaltires do not increase the GVWRand GAWR limitations.
Exceeding any vehicle weightrating limitation could resultin serious damage to the vehicleand/or personal injury.
