This data can help provide a betterunderstanding of the circumstances inwhich crashes and injuries occur.
Note:Event data recorder data isrecorded by your vehicle only if anon-trivial crash situation occurs; no datais recorded by the event data recorderunder normal driving conditions and nopersonal data or information (e.g., name,gender, age, and crash location) isrecorded (see limitations regarding 911Assist and Traffic, directions andInformation privacy below). However,parties, such as law enforcement, couldcombine the event data recorder datawith the type of personally identifyingdata routinely acquired during a crashinvestigation.
To read data recorded by an event datarecorder, special equipment is required,and access to the vehicle or the eventdata recorder is needed. In addition tothe vehicle manufacturer, otherparties, such as law enforcement, thathave such special equipment, can readthe information if they have access tothe vehicle or the event data recorder.Ford Motor Company and Ford ofCanada do not access event datarecorder information without obtainingconsent, unless pursuant to court orderor where required by law enforcement,other government authorities or otherthird parties acting with lawfulauthority. Other parties may seek toaccess the information independentlyof Ford Motor Company and Ford ofCanada.
Note:Including to the extent that anylaw pertaining to Event Data Recordersapplies to SYNC or its features, pleasenote the following: Once 911 Assist (ifequipped) is enabled (set ON), 911 Assistmay, through any paired and connectedcell phone, disclose to emergencyservices that the vehicle has been in acrash involving the deployment of anairbag or, in certain vehicles, theactivation of the fuel pump shut-off.Certain versions or updates to 911 Assistmay also be capable of being used toelectronically or verbally provide to 911operators the vehicle location (such aslatitude and longitude), and/or otherdetails about the vehicle or crash orpersonal information about theoccupants to assist 911 operators toprovide the most appropriate emergencyservices. Introduction

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNINGS
Always drive and ride with yourseatback upright and the lap beltsnug and low across the hips.
To reduce the risk of injury, makesure children sit where they can beproperly restrained.
Never let a passenger hold a child onhis or her lap while the vehicle ismoving. The passenger cannotprotect the child from injury in a crash,which may result in serious injury or death.
All occupants of the vehicle,including the driver, should alwaysproperly wear their safety belts, evenwhen an airbag supplemental restraintsystem is provided. Failure to properly wearyour safety belt could seriously increasethe risk of injury or death.
It is extremely dangerous to ride in acargo area, inside or outside of avehicle. In a crash, people riding inthese areas are more likely to be seriouslyinjured or killed. Do not allow people to ridein any area of your vehicle that is notequipped with seats and safety belts. Besure everyone in your vehicle is in a seatand using a safety belt properly.
In a rollover crash, an unbeltedperson is significantly more likely todie than a person wearing a safetybelt.
Each seating position in your vehiclehas a specific safety belt assemblywhich is made up of one buckle andone tongue that are designed to be usedas a pair. 1) Use the shoulder belt on theoutside shoulder only. Never wear theshoulder belt under the arm. 2) Neverswing the safety belt around your neck overthe inside shoulder. 3) Never use a singlebelt for more than one person.
WARNINGS
When possible, all children 12 yearsold and under should be properlyrestrained in a rear seating position.Failure to follow this could seriouslyincrease the risk of injury or death.
Safety belts and seats can becomehot in a vehicle that has been closedup in sunny weather; they could burna small child. Check seat covers andbuckles before you place a child anywherenear them.
Front and rear seat occupants,including pregnant women, shouldwear safety belts for optimumprotection in an accident.
All seating positions in this vehicle havelap and shoulder safety belts. Alloccupants of the vehicle should alwaysproperly wear their safety belts, even whenan airbag supplemental restraint systemis provided.
The safety belt system consists of:
•Lap and shoulder safety belts.
•Shoulder safety belt with automaticlocking mode, (except driver safetybelt).
•Height adjuster at the front outboardseating positions.
•Safety belt pretensioner at the frontoutboard seating positions.
•Safety belt warning light and chime.
•Crash sensors and monitoring systemwith readiness indicator.

Restraint Safety System
The restraint safety system provides animproved overall level of frontal crashprotection to front seat occupants and isdesigned to help further reduce the risk ofairbag-related injuries. The system is ableto analyze different occupant conditionsand crash severity before activating theappropriate safety devices to help betterprotect a range of occupants in a varietyof frontal crash situations.
Your vehicle restraint safety systemconsists of:
•Driver and passenger dual-stage airbagsupplemental restraints.
•Front outboard safety belts withpretensioners, energy managementretractors (first row only), and safetybelt usage sensors.
•Driver seat position sensor.
•Front crash severity sensors.
•Restraints control module with impactand safing sensors.
•Restraint system warning light andbackup tone.
•The electrical wiring for the airbags,crash sensor(s), safety beltpretensioners, front safety belt usagesensors, driver seat position sensor, andindicator lights.
How does the restraint safety systemwork?
The restraint safety system can adapt thedeployment strategy of your vehicle’ssafety devices according to crash severityand occupant conditions. A collection ofcrash and occupant sensors providesinformation to the restraints control
module. During a crash, the restraintscontrol module may activate the safetybelt pretensioners and/or either one orboth stages of the dual-stage airbagsupplemental restraints based on crashseverity and occupant conditions.
DRIVER AND PASSENGER
AIRBAGS
WARNINGS
Never place your arm or any objectsover an airbag module. Placing yourarm over a deploying airbag canresult in serious arm fractures or otherinjuries. Objects placed on or over theairbag inflation area may cause thoseobjects to be propelled by the airbag intoyour face and torso causing serious injury.
Airbags can kill or injure a child in achild seat. Never place a rear-facingchild seat in front of an active airbag.If you must use a forward-facing child seatin the front seat, move the seat upon whichthe child seat is installed all the way back.
The driver and passenger front airbags willdeploy during significant frontal and nearfrontal crashes.
The driver and passenger front airbagsystem consists of:
•Driver and passenger airbag modules.

Proper Driver and Front PassengerSeating Adjustment
WARNING
The National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration recommends aminimum distance of at least 10 in(25 cm) between an occupant’s chest andthe driver airbag module.
To properly position yourself away fromthe airbag:
•Move your seat to the rear as far as youcan while still reaching the pedalscomfortably.
•Recline the seat slightly (one or twodegrees) from the upright position.
After all occupants have adjusted theirseats and put on safety belts, it is veryimportant that they continue to sitproperly. Properly seated occupants situpright, lean against the seat back, andcenter themselves on the seat cushion,with their feet comfortably extended onthe floor. Sitting improperly can increasethe chance of injury in a crash event. Forexample, if an occupant slouches, liesdown, turns sideways, sits forward, leansforward or sideways, or puts one or bothfeet up, the chance of injury during a crashis greatly increased.
Children and Airbags
WARNING
Airbags can kill or injure a child in achild seat. Never place a rear-facingchild seat in front of an active airbag.If you must use a forward-facing child seatin the front seat, move the seat upon whichthe child seat is installed all the way back.
Children must always be properlyrestrained. Accident statistics suggest thatchildren are safer when properly restrainedin the rear seating positions than in thefront seating position. Failure to followthese instructions may increase the risk ofinjury in a crash.
SIDE AIRBAGS
WARNINGS
Do not place objects or mountequipment on or near the airbagcover, on the side of the seatbacks(of the front seats), or in front seat areasthat may come into contact with adeploying airbag. Failure to follow theseinstructions may increase the risk ofpersonal injury in the event of a crash.
Do not use accessory seat covers.The use of accessory seat coversmay prevent the deployment of theside airbags and increase the risk of injuryin an accident.
Do not lean your head on the door.The side airbag could injure you as itdeploys from the side of theseatback.

WARNINGS
Do not attempt to service, repair, ormodify the airbag, its fuses or theseat cover on a seat containing anairbag as you could be seriously injured orkilled. Contact your authorized dealer assoon as possible.
If the side airbag has deployed, theairbag will not function again. Theside airbag system (including theseat) must be inspected and serviced byan authorized dealer. If the airbag is notreplaced, the unrepaired area will increasethe risk of injury in a crash.
The side airbags are located on theoutboard side of the seatbacks of the frontseats. In certain sideways crashes, theairbag on the side affected by the crashwill be inflated. The airbag was designedto inflate between the door panel andoccupant to further enhance the protectionprovided occupants in side impact crashes.
The system consists of the following:
•A label or embossed side panelindicating that side airbags are foundon your vehicle.
•Side airbags located inside theseatback of the driver and frontpassenger seats.
·Crash sensors and monitoringsystem with readiness indicator.See Crash Sensors and AirbagIndicator (page 39).
The design and development of the sideairbag system included recommendedtesting procedures that were developedby a group of automotive safety expertsknown as the Side Airbag TechnicalWorking Group. These recommendedtesting procedures help reduce the risk ofinjuries related to the deployment of sideairbags.
SAFETY CANOPY™
WARNINGS
Do not place objects or mountequipment on or near the headlinerat the siderail that may come intocontact with a deploying curtain airbag.Failure to follow these instructions mayincrease the risk of personal injury in theevent of a crash.
Do not lean your head on the door.The curtain airbag could injure youas it deploys from the headliner.
Do not attempt to service, repair, ormodify the curtain airbags, its fuses,the A, B, or C pillar trim, or theheadliner on a vehicle containing curtainairbags as you could be seriously injuredor killed. Contact your authorized dealeras soon as possible.
All occupants of your vehicleincluding the driver should alwayswear their safety belts even when anairbag supplemental restraint system andcurtain airbag is provided. Failure toproperly wear your safety belt couldseriously increase the risk of injury or death.

WARNINGS
To reduce risk of injury, do notobstruct or place objects in thedeployment path of the curtainairbag.
If the curtain airbags have deployed,the curtain airbags will not functionagain. The curtain airbags (includingthe A, B and C pillar trim and headliner)must be inspected and serviced by anauthorized dealer. If the curtain airbag isnot replaced, the unrepaired area willincrease the risk of injury in a crash.
The Safety Canopy will deploy duringsignificant side crashes or when a certainlikelihood of a rollover event is detectedby the rollover sensor. The Safety Canopyis mounted to the roof side-rail sheetmetal, behind the headliner, above eachrow of seats. In certain sideways crashesor rollover events, the Safety Canopy willbe activated, regardless of which seats areoccupied. The Safety Canopy is designedto inflate between the side window areaand occupants to further enhanceprotection provided in side impact crashesand rollover events.
The system consists of the following:
•Safety canopy curtain airbags locatedabove the trim panels over the frontand rear side windows identified by alabel or wording on the headliner orroof-pillar trim.
•A flexible headliner which opens abovethe side doors to allow air curtaindeployment
· Crash sensors and monitoringsystem with a readinessindicator. See Crash Sensorsand Airbag Indicator (page 39).
Children 12 years old and under shouldalways be properly restrained in the rearseats. The Safety Canopy will not interferewith children restrained using a properlyinstalled child or booster seat because itis designed to inflate downward from theheadliner above the doors along the sidewindow opening.
The design and development of the SafetyCanopy included recommended testingprocedures that were developed by agroup of automotive safety experts knownas the Side Airbag Technical WorkingGroup. These recommended testingprocedures help reduce the risk of injuriesrelated to the deployment of side airbags(including the Safety Canopy).
CRASH SENSORS AND
AIRBAG INDICATOR
WARNING
Modifying or adding equipment tothe front end of the vehicle (includingframe, bumper, front end bodystructure and tow hooks) may affect theperformance of the airbag system,increasing the risk of injury. Do not modifythe front end of the vehicle.

Your vehicle has a collection of crash andoccupant sensors which provideinformation to the restraints controlmodule which deploys (activates) thefront safety belt pretensioners, driverairbag, passenger airbag, seat mountedside airbags, and the Safety Canopy®.Based on the type of crash (frontal impact,side impact or rollover), the restraintscontrol module will deploy the appropriatesafety devices.
The restraints control module alsomonitors the readiness of the above safetydevices plus the crash and occupantsensors. The readiness of the safetysystem is indicated by a warning indicatorlight in the instrument cluster or by abackup tone if the warning light is notworking. See Instrument Cluster (page85). Routine maintenance of the airbag isnot required.
A difficulty with the system is indicated byone or more of the following:
The readiness light will notilluminate immediately after theignition is turned on.
•The readiness light will either flash orstay lit.
•A series of five beeps will be heard. Thetone pattern will repeat periodicallyuntil the problem, the light or both arerepaired.
If any of these things happen, evenintermittently, have the supplementalrestraint system serviced at an authorizeddealer immediately. Unless serviced, thesystem may not function properly in theevent of a crash.
The fact that the safety belt pretensionersor front airbags did not activate for bothfront seat occupants in a crash does notmean that something is wrong with thesystem. Rather, it means the restraintscontrol module determined the accidentconditions (crash severity, belt usage)were not appropriate to activate thesesafety devices.
•The design of the front airbags is toactivate only in frontal and near-frontalcrashes (not rollovers, side impacts orrear impacts) unless the crash causessufficient frontal deceleration.
•The design of the safety beltpretensioners is to activate in frontal,near-frontal and side crashes, and inrollovers.
•The design of the side airbags is toinflate in certain side impact crashes.Side airbags may activate in othertypes of crashes if the vehicleexperiences sufficient sideways motionor deformation.
•The design of the Safety Canopy is toinflate in certain side impact crashesor rollover events. The Safety Canopymay activate in other types of crashesif the vehicle experiences sufficientsideways motion or deformation, or acertain likelihood of rollover.
AIRBAG DISPOSAL
Contact your authorized dealer as soon aspossible. Airbags must be disposed of byqualified personnel.

WINDSHIELD WIPERS
Note:Fully defrost the windshield beforeyou switch the windshield wipers on.
Note:Make sure you switch the windshieldwipers off before entering a car wash.
Note:Clean the windshield and wiperblades if they begin to leave streaks orsmears. If that does not resolve the issue,install new wiper blades. See Changingthe Wiper Blades (page 255).
Note:Do not operate the wipers on a drywindshield. This may scratch the glass,damage the wiper blades or cause the wipermotor to burn out. Always use thewindshield washers before wiping a drywindshield.
Rotate the end of the control:
•Away from you to increase the wiperspeed.
•Toward you to decrease the wiperspeed.
Speed Dependent Wipers
When your vehicle speed increases, theinterval between wipes decreases.
AUTOWIPERS (If Equipped)
Note:Fully defrost the windshield beforeswitching on the windshield wipers.
Note:Make sure you switch off thewindshield wipers before entering a carwash.
Note:Clean the windshield and wiperblades if they begin to leave streaks orsmears. If that does not resolve the issue,install new wiper blades. See Changingthe Wiper Blades (page 255).
Wet or winter driving conditions with ice,snow or salty road mist can causeinconsistent and unexpected wiping orsmearing. In these conditions, you can dothe following to help keep your windshieldclear:
•Lower the sensitivity of the autowipersto reduce the amount of smearing.
•Switch to normal or high-speed wipe.
•Switch the autowipers off.
The autowipers feature uses a rain sensor,located in the area around the interiormirror. The rain sensor monitors theamount of moisture on the windshield andautomatically turns on the wipers. Itadjusts the wiper speed by the amount ofmoisture that the sensor detects on thewindshield.
Note:This autowiper feature isautomatically set to on and remains on untilyou switch it off in the information display.You can also switch the feature back on atany time. See General Information (page92).
Use the rotary control to adjust thesensitivity of the rain sensor. Set thecontrol to low sensitivity, and the wiperswill turn on when the rain sensor detectsa large amount of moisture on thewindshield. Set the control to highsensitivity, and the wipers will turn on whenthe rain sensor detects a small amount ofmoisture on the windshield.
Note:When you set the wiper system tointermittent wipe and the autowiper systemis on, the autowiper sensitivity settingadjusts the wiper speed according to themoisture on the windshield only. Use thewiper lever to wipe the windshieldon-demand.

Keep the outside of the windshield clean.The rain sensor is very sensitive. If the areaaround the mirror is dirty, then the wipersmay operate if dirt, mist or insects hit thewindshield.
WINDSHIELD WASHERS
Note:Do not operate the wipers on a drywindshield. This may scratch the glass,damage the wiper blades or cause the wipermotor to burn out. Always use thewindshield washers before wiping a drywindshield.
Note:Do not operate the washers whenthe washer reservoir is empty. This maycause the washer pump to overheat.
Press the end of the wiper lever to activatethe washer:
•A brief press causes a single wipewithout washer fluid.
•A quick press and hold causes thewipers to swipe the windshield threetimes with washer fluid.
•A long press and hold activates thewipers and washer fluid for up to 10seconds.
A wipe occurs a few seconds after washingto clear any remaining washer fluid. Youcan switch this feature on and off throughthe information display. See InformationDisplays (page 92).
REAR WINDOW WIPER AND
WASHERS
Rear Window Wiper
Note:Make sure you switch off the wipersystem before using an automatic car wash.
Rotate the control to select:

Rear Window Washer
Rotate and hold the control to the top orbottom position to activate the rearwasher. The control returns to the 2 or 0position when you release it.
