Essential Information
Location of Spare Tire: If you get a flat tire while driving, do not apply the brake heavily. Instead,
gradually decrease your speed. Hold the steering wheel firmly and slow\
ly move to a safe place
on the side of the road. Your vehicle is equipped with a temporary spare tire located under the
vehicle, just forward of the rear bumper. The temporary spare is designed for emergency use only
and should be replaced as soon as possible. The jack and tools are locat\
ed under the carpeted
floor panel in the rear cargo area. For complete details on how to cha\
nge your tire, refer to the
Roadside Emergencies chapter in your Owner’s Guide.
Fuel Type and Tank Capacity: Your fuel tank capacity is 22.5 gallons (85.2L). Your vehicle is
designed to use “Regular” unleaded gasoline with an octane rating \
of 87. Do not use gasoline
labeled as “Regular” in high altitude areas that are sold with oct\
ane ratings less than 87.
Do not use E85 fuels, because your vehicle was not designed to run on fu\
els with more than
10% ethanol.
Tire Pressure: Your tire pressure is properly set at the dealership according to the rec\
ommended
specifications found on the Safety Compliance Certification Label or\
Tire Label located on the
B-Pillar or the edge of the driver’s door. Check your tire pressure at least once a month and
before long trips (including spare). As an added safety feature, your \
vehicle may be equipped
with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that illuminates a low tire pressure warning light
when one or more of your tires is significantly under-inflated. Improperly inflated tires can
affect vehicle handling and can fail suddenly, possibly resulting in loss of vehicle control. Refer
to the Tires, Wheels and Loading chapter in your Owner’s Guide for more information.
Fuel Pump Shut-Off Switch: The fuel pump shut-off switch is a device intended to stop the
electric fuel pump when your vehicle has been involved in a substantial \
jolt. The switch is located
in the passenger’s footwell, by the kick panel. After a collision, if the engine cranks b\
ut does not
start, the fuel pump shut-off switch may have been activated. For more information regarding
the fuel pump shut-off switch, refer to the Roadside Emergencies chapter of your Owner’s Guide.
Easy Fuel
™ ‘no cap’ Fuel System: Your vehicle has a ‘no cap’ fuel system which allows you to
simply open the fuel filler door, insert the nozzle and start fueling. Ensure that you wait about
five seconds before pulling out the nozzle in order to allow any resid\
ual fuel to drain into the
tank. The Easy Fuel™ System is self-sealing and therefore protected a\
gainst dust, dirt, water,
snow and ice. If you need to fill your fuel tank with a portable fuel \
container, use the fuel funnel
which is either attached to the underside of the spare tire cover or wit\
h the tire changing tools.
Slowly insert the funnel into the Easy Fuel™ system and fill the ta\
nk with fuel from the container.
When done, clean the funnel or properly dispose of it. Extra funnels can\
be purchased from your
authorized dealer. Do not use aftermarket funnels as they will not work with the Easy Fuel™
system and may cause damage.
Roadside Assistance: Your new Ford Explorer comes with the assurance and support of 24-hour
emergency roadside assistance. Roadside assistance includes such service\
s as: lockout assistance,
limited fuel delivery, battery jump starts, changing a flat tire, towing, and winch out. To receive
roadside assistance in the United States, call 1 (800) 241-3673. In Ca\
nada, call 1 (800) 665-2006.
SOS Post-Crash Alert System
™: Your vehicle is equipped with the SOS Post-Crash Alert System™. This system provides audible and visual alarms in the event of a crash which causes the deployment
of airbags or the activation of the safety belt pretensioners. The turn \
signals will flash and the
horn will sound. To deactivate the system, press the hazard flasher control, or you can \
press

on your remote transmitter.
A. (Eject): Press and hold
to auto eject all CDs present
in the system. Press
and a
memory preset to eject from
a specific slot.
B. LOAD: Press LOAD and
a memory preset to load to a
specific slot. Press and hold to
autoload up to six CDs.
C.
/ (Tune/Disc Selector):
Press and release to manually
advance up/down the radio
frequency or to select a
desired disc. Press and hold
for a fast advance through
radio frequencies.
D. CD: Press to enter CD/MP3
mode. If a CD/MP3 is already
loaded into the system, CD
play will begin where it ended
last. If no CD is loaded, NO
DISC will appear in the display.

Additional Features
Remote Entry System and Features
The remote entry system allows you to lock or unlock all vehicle
doors and liftgate, open the liftgate window without a key and
activate the panic alarm.
• Press
once to lock all doors and the liftgate. Press
again within three seconds to confirm all doors are closed
and locked.
• Press
once to unlock the driver’s door. Press again within
three seconds to unlock all doors.
• Press
to activate the panic alarm. Press again or turn
the ignition on to deactivate.
• Press
to unlatch the liftgate window.
• Car finder: Press
twice within three seconds to locate your vehicle. The horn will chirp a\
nd
the turn lamps will flash.
Universal Garage Door Opener (if equipped)
Your vehicle may be equipped with either the HomeLink® or Car2U® system which provides a way to
replace hand held transmitters with a single built in device. The systems work to learn the frequency
codes that operate garage doors and some devices within the home. For more information, refer to
the Driver Controls chapter in your Owner’s Guide.
USB Port (if equipped)
Your vehicle may be equipped with a USB port inside your center console. \
This feature
allows you to plug in your media playing devices among other options. Fo\
r more detailed
information, please refer to the SYNC
® supplement or the SYNC® section of the
Navigation Supplement.
Auxiliary Input Jack
Your vehicle is equipped with an Auxiliary Input Jack located inside the \
console
bin. This allows you to plug and play auxiliary audio devices. Press AUX\
repeatedly
on your audio system to access. When LINE IN appears in the display, plug in
your auxiliary audio device. For more detailed information, please refer\
to your
Owner’s Guide.
Power Deployable Running Boards (if equipped)
The deployable running boards automatically move when the doors are open\
ed to assist with
entering and exiting the vehicle. With automatic power deploy, the running boards will extend
down when the doors are opened, and with automatic power stow, the running boards will
return to the stowed position when the doors are closed. To enable/disable the power running
board feature, refer to the Message Center section of your Owner’s Guide.
Family Entertainment System (FES) (if equipped)
Your vehicle may be equipped with a Family Entertainment System (Rear se\
at DVD player with
wireless headphones and remote control). Refer to the Owner’s Guide for further information
on the operation of your system.
Seating
2nd Row Seats: The second
row seats are designed for
maximum utility. They can
be positioned in up to three
unique configurations:
Upright (seating) position,
Cargo mode, and E-Z entry
mode (if equipped with
3rd row seat).
Folding down the 2nd row
60/40 seats or bucket seats
(if equipped):
Before folding
down the
2nd row
seats, ensure
that no
objects such
as books,
purses, or
briefcases are on the floor in
front of or under the seat.
1. Lower the head restraints
by pulling on the strap. 2.
Locate the recline handle on
the side of the seat cushion
by the door. 3. Pull up on the
handle and push the seatback
forward toward the front of
the vehicle.
To place the 2nd row 60/40
seats in cargo mode:
(if equipped with a 3rd row
seat) 1. Fold down the 2nd
row seat as
indicated.
2. Lift the
cargo mode
lever located
on the
back of the seatback to
kneel the
seat down
and get a
flat loading
floor. A
moderate
force may be required to move
the seat forward and down.
To return to the upright
(seating) position from
cargo mode: 1. Push the seat
rearward until the latch is
engaged. (A moderate force
may be required to move the
seat). 2. Return the seatback
to the upright position.
Note: The seatback cannot
be returned to the upright
position until the seat is
returned from the cargo mode
position and latched. If the
seatback will not raise,
reposition the seat into cargo
mode and try lifting it again.
To enter the 3rd row seat:
(if equipped) 1. Fold the seatback
down (as
indicated)
and release
the side
handle.
2. Pull the
side handle
up again until the rear of the
seat releases from the floor. 3.
Rotate the seat upward and
away from the 3rd row.
To return the 2nd row seat to
the upright (seating) position
from E-Z entry mode:
1. Return the seat from the
E-Z entry position and latch it
to the floor with a moderate
speed. 2. Bring the seatback
to an upright position.
Note: If the seatback will
not return to the upright
position, tumble the seat
forward again and then
re-latch it to the floor. Be sure
that cargo or other objects
are not trapped underneath
the seatback. 3rd Row Seats: (if equipped)
Before folding the 3rd row
seats, ensure that no objects
such as books, purses or
briefcases are on the seat
cushions and that the seat
belts are unbuckled. 1.
Fold
the head restraints down by
pulling on the strap located
under the restraint. 2. Pull up on the
handle
located
behind the
seatback
while
pushing the
seatback forward and down
into the seat cushion.
Note: For 3rd row power
folding seat (if equipped),
the control buttons are
located on the driver-side
rear quarter trim panel
(accessible from the liftgate
area). Be sure to fold the
head restraints before
powering the 3rd row seat
into the folded position.
To return the 3rd row seats to the upright (seating) position:
1. Pull up on the handle
located on the seatback,
rotating the seatback
upward until you hear a
click, locking it in the upright
position. 2. Lift up on the
head restraint until it locks
into its original position.

14. AdvanceTrac® with Roll
Stability Control™ (RSC®)
Stability Enhancement system
The AdvanceTrac
® stability
system helps you to maintain
stability and steerability of
your vehicle during a variety of road
conditions. If
your vehicle
becomes
stuck in the
snow, mud
or sand, try
turning off the AdvanceTrac
®
system to allow wheel spin
and help increase momentum
to dig the vehicle out. The
system defaults to on and the
control will illuminate when
turned off.
15. Overdrive Control Drive
with the vehicle in Overdrive (D) for the
best fuel
economy.
You can
deactivate
overdrive
by pressing
the transmission control
switch on the side of the
shift handle. Use this during
heavy city traffic where you
are continuously shifting in
and out of overdrive, hilly
terrain, heavy loads, trailer
towing and when engine
breaking is required. To
return to overdrive, simply
press the transmission control
switch again. 16. Heated Seats
(if equipped)
Your vehicle may be equipped
with heated seats. Press to
activate/deactivate.
17. Four-Wheel Drive (4WD,
if equipped) When 4X4
AUTO is selected, power is
automatically provided to
all four wheels. It is used for
normal street and highway
driving. 4X4 HIGH is used
for extra traction in slippery
conditions, such as in snow,
on icy roads, or in off-road
situations. It should not be
operated on dry pavement.
4X4 LOW can be selected
to provide extra gearing to
deliver maximum power to
all four wheels. It is intended
only for off-road applications
such as deep sand, steep
grades or pulling heavy objects.
SYNC
®
(if equipped)
SYNC® is a hands-free
communications and
entertainment system
with special phone and
media features. For more
information, please refer

the Navigation Supplement.

All Wheel Drive (AWD)
(if equipped)
The AWD system is always
active and uses all four wheels
to power the vehicle, thereby
increasing traction and enabling you to drive over
terrain and road conditions
that a conventional
two-wheel drive vehicle
cannot. The system is capable
of handling many different
road conditions, including
street and highway driving
as well as off-road conditions
such as deep snow, ice or
shallow sand. Note: If your
vehicle is equipped with
AWD, a spare tire of a
different size (other than the
tire provided) should never
be used. Using a different size
could cause the AWD system
to stop functioning and
default to front wheel drive.

for more information.
Use extreme caution when using any device or feature
that may take your attention off the road. Your primary
responsibility is the safe operation of the vehicle. Only use
non-essential features and devices when it is safe to do so.

5. Airbag Readiness Light
Illuminates briefly when the
ignition is turned on. If this
light fails to illuminate,
remains on or continues to
flash after the engine is
started, contact your
authorized dealer for
service as soon as possible.
A chime will also sound if
there is a malfunction in the
indicator light.
6. Service Engine Soon Light
The Service Engine soon light
illuminates briefly when
the ignition is turned on. If it
remains on or is blinking after
the engine is started, the On
Board Diagnostics System
(OBD-II) has detected a
malfunction. Drive in a moderate fashion and have your vehicle
serviced immediately by an
authorized dealer.
7. Hazard Flasher Control The hazard
flasher is
located on
the steering
column,
just behind
the steering
wheel. Press to activate all
front and rear direction signals.
Press again to deactivate. 8. Message Center
(if equipped)
The message center displays
important vehicle information
through a
constant
monitoring
of vehicle
systems. The
system will
also notify
you of potential vehicle
problems with a display of
system warnings followed by
a long indicator chime.
9. Low Tire Pressure
Warning light

Illuminates when your tire
pressure is low. If the light
remains on, the tire pressure
should be checked. If the light
does not turn on at ignition
or begins to flash, contact
your authorized dealer as
soon as possible.
10. ABS Warning Light
The ABS light
illuminates
briefly when the ignition is
turned on. If the ABS light
remains on or continues
to flash, a malfunction has
been detected. Contact your
authorized dealer as soon as
possible. Normal braking
(less ABS) is still functional
unless the brake warning
light
is also illuminated.
11. Steering Wheel Controls
VOL +/- : Press to
increase/decrease
volume levels.
: Press to access the
previous/ next radio
station, CD track or
preset satellite
radio channel.
MEDIA: Press repeatedly
to access all possible
media sources.
VOICE: Press to access
voice recognition,
if equipped.

12. Navigation System
(if equipped)
The mobile media navigation
system allows you to record
CDs, list to your saved music
and play DVDs in addition to
navigating the vehicle. For
more information, refer to
your Navigation supplement
(if equipped).
13. Power Adjustable Pedals
(if equipped)
Press the bottom of the
control q to move the pedals
closer to you or the top of
the control p to move the
pedals further away from you. The pedals
should only
be adjusted
when the
vehicle is
stopped and
in Park (P).

DUAL AUTOMATIC TEMPERATURE CONTROL (IF EqUIPPED)
A
A. Driver/Passenger Side Temperature
Control: Press to increase or decrease the
temperature on the driver or passenger side
of the vehicle. Pressing the passenger side
control will activate dual zone where the
driver and passenger are able to select their
own individual settings. If the passenger side
controls are not activated, the driver side
controls will determine the temperature
setting for the entire vehicle (single zone).
B. AUTO: Press to engage full automatic
operation. The system will automatically
determine fan speed, airflow distribution,
A/C on or off and either outside or
recirculated air to heat or cool the vehicle
to reach the desired temperature.
C. Fan Speed: Press to increase or decrease
fan speed.
D. OFF: Outside air is shut out and the fan will
not operate. Note: If your vehicle is equipped
with the auxiliary climate control system, the
auxiliary fan can still operate with the front
system off. E. Manual Override Controls:
Press to manually
determine where airflow is directed. To return
to fully automatic control, press AUTO.
F. Windshield Defroster
: Outside air
is distributed through the windshield
defroster vents.
G. DUAL: Press to activate dual zone mode
where the driver and passenger have control
of their individual temperature settings.
Press again to return to single zone where
the driver’s settings will determine the
temperature for the entire vehicle.
H. Rear Window Defroster
: Press to
clear the rear window of thin ice and fog.
The defroster turns off automatically after ten
minutes or when the ignition is turned off.
To manually turn off the defroster before ten
minutes have passed, press the control again.

1. Headlamp Control
O: Turns the headlamps off.

2. Parking Brake Release
Pull the lever to release the
parking brake. Driving with
the parking brake engaged
will cause the brakes to wear
out prematurely and reduce
fuel economy.
3. Multi-function Lever
Rotate the end of the control
up/down to increase/decrease
the speed of the wipers.
Push the end of the stalk:
• quickly for a single swipe
without fluid. •
and hold briefly for three
swipes with washer fluid.
• and hold for a longer
wash cycle.
To operate your rear window wiper,
turn the
rear wiper
control to 1
(intermittent
speed), 2
(normal
speed) or O (off). For a rear
wash cycle, rotate and hold
the rear wiper control
to either
position.
For better visibility, your
headlamps will turn on
(during daylight) if your
windshield wipers and
autolamps (if equipped) are
on. Note: For optimal wiper
performance, clean your
blades and glass regularly.

4. Speed Control

To set the speed:
1.
Press ON.
2.
Accelerate
to the
desired
speed.
3.
Press SET + or and take your
foot off the accelerator.

To set a higher speed, press
and hold SET + or press
SET + repeatedly until the
desired speed is reached.

To set a lower speed, press
and hold SET – or press
