JUMP STARTING THE VEHICLE
WARNING: Batteries normallyproduce explosive gases which cancause personal injury. Therefore, do notallow flames, sparks or lightedsubstances to come near the battery.When working near the battery, alwaysshield your face and protect your eyes.Always provide correct ventilation.
WARNING: Keep batteries out ofreach of children. Batteries containsulfuric acid. Avoid contact with skin,eyes or clothing. Shield your eyes whenworking near the battery to protectagainst possible splashing of acidsolution. In case of acid contact with skinor eyes, flush immediately with water fora minimum of 15 minutes and get promptmedical attention. If acid is swallowed,call a physician immediately.
WARNING: Use only adequatelysized cables with insulated clamps.
Preparing Your Vehicle
Do not attempt to push-start yourautomatic transmission vehicle.
Note:Attempting to push-start a vehiclewith an automatic transmission may causetransmission damage.
Note:Use only a 12-volt supply to start yourvehicle.
Note:Do not disconnect the battery of thedisabled vehicle as this could damage thevehicle electrical system.
Park the booster vehicle close to the hoodof the disabled vehicle, making sure thetwo vehicles do not touch.
Locating the Jump StartingConnection Points
1.Open the hood. See Opening andClosing the Hood (page 315).
2.Remove the access cover.
3.Remove the red protective cover fromthe positive lead jump connectionpoint.
4.Locate the negative jump connectionpoint on the rear mounting bolt for thecross brace, as shown.
Connecting the Jumper Cables
WARNING: If the engine is runningwhile the hood is open, stay clear ofmoving engine components. Failure tofollow this warning could result in seriouspersonal injury or death.
WARNING: Do not connect thenegative jumper cable to any other partof your vehicle. Use the ground point.

(Vehicle Owner/Operator/GeneralPublic)Electric and Hybrid-Electric VehicleConsiderations
In the event of damage or fire involving anelectric vehicle or hybrid-electric vehicle:
•Always assume the high-voltagebattery and associated componentsare energized and fully charged.
•Exposed electrical components, wires,and high-voltage batteries presentpotential high-voltage shock hazards.
•Venting high-voltage battery vaporsare potentially toxic and flammable.
•Physical damage to the vehicle orhigh-voltage battery may result inimmediate or delayed release of toxic,flammable gases and fire.
Vehicle information and general safetypractices:
•Know the make and model of yourvehicle.
•Review the owner’s manual andbecome familiar with your vehicle’ssafety information and recommendedsafety practices.
•Do not attempt to repair damagedelectric and hybrid-electric vehiclesyourself.
Contact an authorized dealer.
Crashes
A crash or impact significant enough torequire an emergency response forconventional vehicles would also requirethe same response for an electric orhybrid-electric vehicle.
If possible:
•Move your vehicle to a safe, nearbylocation and remain on the scene.
•Roll down the windows beforeswitching your vehicle off.
•Place your vehicle in park (P), set theparking brake, switch off the vehicle,activate the hazard warning flashersand move your key(s) at least 15 ft(5 m) away from the vehicle.
Always:
•Call emergency assistance if neededand advise that an electric orhybrid-electric vehicle is involved.
•Exposed electrical components, wires,and high-voltage batteries presentpotential high-voltage shock hazards.
•Avoid contact with leaking fluids andgases, and remain out of the way ofoncoming traffic until emergencyresponders arrive.
•When emergency responders arrive,tell them that the vehicle involved is anelectric vehicle or hybrid-electricvehicle.
Fires
As with any vehicle, call emergencyassistance immediately if you see sparks,smoke or flames coming from the vehicle.Remain a safe distance from the vehicleand try to stay clear of the smoke.
•Exit the vehicle immediately.
•Advise emergency assistance that anelectric or hybrid-electric vehicle isinvolved.

FUSE SPECIFICATION CHART
Engine Compartment Fuse Box
WARNING: Always disconnect thebattery before servicing high currentfuses.
WARNING: To reduce risk ofelectrical shock, always replace thecover to the power distribution boxbefore reconnecting the battery orrefilling fluid reservoirs.
The engine compartment fuse box is underthe driver side leaf screen in the enginecompartment. It has high-current fusesthat protect your vehicle's main electricalsystems from overloads.
If you disconnect and reconnect thebattery, you need to reset some features.See Changing the 12V Battery (page 329).
Note: Replace fuses with the same typeand rating. See Changing a Fuse (page313).

CHANGING A FUSE
Fuses
WARNING: Always replace a fusewith one that has the specifiedamperage rating. Using a fuse with ahigher amperage rating can cause severewire damage and could start a fire.If electrical components in the vehicle arenot working, a fuse may have blown. Blownfuses are identified by a broken wire withinthe fuse. Check the appropriate fusesbefore replacing any electricalcomponents.

Precautions
•Do not work on a hot engine.
•Make sure that nothing gets caught inmoving parts.
•Do not work on a vehicle with theengine running in an enclosed space,unless you are sure you have enoughventilation.
•Keep all open flames and other burningmaterial (such as cigarettes) awayfrom the battery and all fuel relatedparts.
Working with the Engine Off
1.Set the parking brake and shift thetransmission to park (P).
2.Switch off the engine.
3.Block the wheels.

OPENING AND CLOSING THE
HOOD
Opening the Hood
1.Open the left-hand front door.
2.Fully pull the hood release lever andlet it completely retract.
Note:This action releases the hood latch.
3.Fully pull the hood release lever for asecond time.
Note:This action fully releases the hood.
4.Open the hood.
Note:There is no secondary latch under thehood.

5.Support the hood with the prop rod.
Closing the Hood
WARNING: Make sure that you fullylatch the hood before driving. Failure tofollow this instruction could result inpersonal injury or death.
1.Remove the prop rod from the catchand secure it correctly in the clip.
2.Lower the hood and allow it to dropunder its own weight for the last10–14 in (25–35 cm).
Note:Make sure that the hood is correctlyclosed.

Note:The oil consumption of new enginesreaches its normal level after approximately3,000 mi (5,000 km).
Note:Increases in oil level can occur fromfrequent short trips that do not allow theengine to get to operating temperature, aswell as frequent idling or low speed drivingfor long periods of time.
Note:If oil levels are continuously notedabove the maximum mark, schedule a visitto your authorized dealer.
Adding Engine Oil
WARNING: Do not add engine oilwhen the engine is hot. Failure to followthis instruction could result in personalinjury.
WARNING: Do not remove the fillercap when the engine is running.
Do not use supplemental engine oiladditives because they are unnecessaryand could lead to engine damage that thevehicle warranty may not cover.
1.Clean the area surrounding the engineoil filler cap before you remove it.
2.Remove the engine oil filler cap.
3.Add engine oil that meets ourspecifications. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 384).
4.Reinstall the engine oil filler cap. Turnit clockwise until you feel a strongresistance.
Note:Make sure you install the oil filler capcorrectly.
Note: Do not add oil further than themaximum mark. Oil levels above themaximum mark may cause engine damage.
Note:Immediately soak up any oil spillagewith an absorbent cloth.
OIL CHANGE INDICATOR
RESET
Use the information display controls onthe steering wheel to reset the oil changeindicator.

CHANGING THE ENGINE AIR
FILTER - 2.3L ECOBOOST™
WARNING: To reduce the risk ofvehicle damage and personal burninjuries, do not start your engine with theair cleaner removed and do not removeit while the engine is running.
When changing the engine air filter, do notallow debris or foreign material to enterthe air induction system. Enginecomponents are susceptible to damagenot covered by the vehicle Warranty.
Change the air filter element at the correctinterval. See Scheduled Maintenance(page 476).
Incorrect component use can causedamage not covered by the vehicleWarranty. See Motorcraft Parts (page382).
To replace the air filter element do thefollowing:1.Remove the clips that secure the airfilter housing cover.
2.Using a screwdriver, loosen the clampon air filter housing cover.
3.Gently pull the boot back away fromthe air filter housing cover.
4.Carefully lift the air filter housing coverfrom the air filter housing assembly.
5.Remove the air filter element from theair filter housing.
6.Wipe any dirt or debris from the air filterhousing and cover to make sure no dirtgets in the engine and that you have agood seal.

When changing the air filter element, useonly the air filter element listed.
Change the air filter element at the properintervals. See Scheduled Maintenance(page 476).
