The button to activate and deactivate theelectronic locking differential is in thecenter of the drive mode rotary switch.
To manually activate or deactivate theelectronic locking differential, press theelectronic locking differential button.

ELECTRONIC LOCKING
DIFFERENTIAL INDICATORS
If both rear wheel axle shaftslock together, the indicator in thecluster is amber, providingadditional traction.
If you select the electronic lockingdifferential and the indicator in the clusteris gray or turns from amber to gray whiledriving, one of the following has occurred:
•The vehicle speed is too high.
•The accelerator pedal is too high duringan engagement attempt.
•The vehicle is experiencing an anti-lockbrake activation.
•The left and right wheel speeddifference is too high during anengagement attempt.
•The system has malfunctioned andaccompanies a check lockingdifferential message in the informationdisplay. See your dealer as soon aspossible.
Note:If the vehicle is experiencing ananti-lock braking event, the electroniclocking differential could momentarilydisengage.

BRAKE PRECAUTIONS
Wet brakes result in reduced brakingefficiency. Gently press the brake pedal afew times when leaving a car wash ordriving from standing water to dry thebrakes.
Note:Depending on applicable laws andregulations in the country where your vehiclewas originally built, the stoplamps couldflash during heavy braking. The hazardwarning flashers could also turn on whenyour vehicle comes to a stop.
ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM
ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEMLIMITATIONS
The anti-lock braking system does noteliminate the risk of crash when:
•You drive too closely to the vehicle infront of you.
•Your vehicle is hydroplaning.
•You take corners too fast.
•The road surface is poor.
Note: If the system activates, the brakepedal could pulse and travel further.Maintain pressure on the brake pedal.
BRAKE OVER ACCELERATOR
- EXCLUDING: RAPTOR
In the event the accelerator pedalbecomes stuck or entrapped, apply steadyand firm pressure to the brake pedal toslow the vehicle and reduce engine power.If you experience this condition, apply thebrakes and bring your vehicle to a safe
stop. Move the transmission to park (P),switch the engine off and apply the parkingbrake. Inspect the accelerator pedal forany interference. If none are found and thecondition persists, have your vehicle towedto the nearest authorized dealer.
BRAKE OVER ACCELERATOR
- RAPTOR
In the event the accelerator pedalbecomes stuck or entrapped, apply steadyand firm pressure to the brake pedal toslow the vehicle and reduce engine power.If you experience this condition, apply thebrakes and bring your vehicle to a safestop. WARNING: Only use brake fluidfrom a sealed container. Contaminationwith dirt, water, petroleum products orother materials may result in brakesystem damage or failure. Failure toadhere to this warning could result in theloss of vehicle control, serious personalinjury or death.
WARNING: Do not allow the fluidto touch your skin or eyes. If thishappens, rinse the affected areasimmediately with plenty of water andcontact your physician.
WARNING: The brake systemcould be affected if the brake fluid levelis below the MIN mark or above the MAXmark on the brake fluid reservoir.
1.Park your vehicle on a level surface.
2.Look at the brake fluid reservoir to seewhere the brake fluid level is relativeto the MIN and the MAX marks on thereservoir.
Note:To avoid fluid contamination, thereservoir cap must remain in place and fullytight, unless you are adding fluid.
Only use fluid that meets ourspecifications. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 578).

BRAKES – WARNING LAMPS
WARNING: Driving your vehiclewith the warning lamp on is dangerous.A significant decrease in brakingperformance may occur. It may take youlonger to stop your vehicle. Have yourvehicle checked as soon as possible.Driving extended distances with theparking brake engaged can cause brakefailure and the risk of personal injury.
If the ABS indicator illuminateswhen you are driving, thisindicates a malfunction. Yourvehicle continues to have normal brakingwithout the anti-lock braking systemfunction. See an authorized dealer.
It also momentarily illuminates when youswitch the ignition on to confirm the lampis functional. If it does not illuminate whenyou switch the ignition on, or begins toflash at any time, have the system checkedby an authorized dealer.

WHAT IS REVERSE BRAKING
ASSIST
Reverse braking assist is designed toreduce impact damage or assist in avoidinga collision while in reverse (R). Usingsensors on the rear of the vehicle, it candetect a possible collision and apply thebrakes. If full braking occurs, the systemattempts to stop the vehicle a safedistance from the obstacle.
HOW DOES REVERSE
BRAKING ASSIST WORK
Reverse braking assist functions when inreverse (R) and traveling at a speed of1–7 mph (2–12 km/h).
If the system detects an obstacle behindyour vehicle, it provides a warning throughthe rear parking aid or cross traffic alertsystem.

WARNING: The system may notoperate properly during severe weatherconditions, for example snow, ice, heavyrain and spray. Always drive with duecare and attention. Failure to take caremay result in a crash.
WARNING: Traffic control systems,fluorescent lamps, inclement weather,air brakes, external motors and fans mayaffect the correct operation of thesensing system. This may cause reducedperformance or false alerts.
WARNING: Some situations andobjects prevent hazard detection. Forexample low or direct sunlight, inclementweather, unconventional vehicle types,and pedestrians. Apply the brakes whennecessary. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in the loss ofcontrol of your vehicle, personal injury ordeath.
WARNING: Do not use the systemwith accessories that extend beyond thefront or rear of your vehicle, for examplea trailer hitch or bike rack. The system isnot able to make corrections for theadditional length of the accessories.
The system only applies the brakes for ashort period of time when an event occurs.Act as soon as you notice the brakes applyto remain in control of the vehicle. If youdo not intervene the vehicle may start tomove again.
Note:Certain add-on devices around thebumper or fascia may create false alerts.For example, large trailer hitches, bicycle orsurfboard racks, license plate brackets,bumper covers or any other device that mayblock the normal detection zone of thesystem. Remove the add-on device toprevent false alerts.

REVERSE BRAKING ASSIST –FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why is reverse braking assist unavailable?
•Make sure the reverse braking assist ison. See Switching Reverse BrakingAssist On and Off (page 298).
•Make sure that all doors, liftgate ortailgate and hood are closed. Drive thevehicle on a straight road for a shortperiod. If the message remains, havethe system checked.
•Make sure the cross traffic alert systemis on if equipped. See Switching CrossTraffic Alert On and Off (page 388).
•Make sure the rear parking aid systemis on. See Rear Parking Aid (page 324).
•Make sure the traction control is on.See Switching Traction Control Onand Off (page 307).
Note:The traction control automaticallyturns off if four-wheel drive low and certaindrive modes such as mud/ruts andsnow/sand is activated.
•The vehicle may have sustained a rearend impact. Have the sensors checkedfor proper coverage and operation.
•An anti-lock brake, traction control orstability control event may haveoccurred. Reverse braking assistresumes operation when the event iscomplete.
•Make sure the rear view camera and360 degree camera are not dirty orobstructed. If dirty, clean the camera.If the message still appears aftercleaning the camera, wait a short timefor the message to clear. If themessage does not clear, have thesystem checked.
•Make sure the cross traffic alert andrear parking aid sensors are notblocked or faulty. See Locating theCross Traffic Alert Sensors (page388). See Locating the Rear ParkingAid Sensors (page 324).
•You recently had your vehicle serviced,or the battery disconnected. Drive yourvehicle a short distance to resumesystem operation.
•Reverse braking assist does notfunction when you connect a trailer.Operation resumes when youdisconnect the trailer.
Note:If the answers to why the system isunavailable do not assist in returning reversebraking assist to available, have the systemchecked as soon as possible.

WHAT IS CROSS TRAFFIC
BRAKING
The system is designed to reduce impactdamage or assist in avoiding a collision byusing the sensors on the rear of yourvehicle to detect a possible collision andapplying the brakes.
HOW DOES CROSS TRAFFIC
BRAKING WORK
The system only reacts for vehiclesapproaching from the sides when you shiftinto reverse (R).
If the system detects a vehicle approachingyour vehicle, it provides a warning throughthe cross traffic alert system. See What IsCross Traffic Alert (page 387).
The system only applies the brakes for ashort period of time when an event occurs.Take action as soon as you notice thesystem applying the brakes in order toremain in control of your vehicle, thesystem does not do this for you.
Note:You need to enable cross traffic alertfor the system to function.

CROSS TRAFFIC BRAKING –FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why is cross traffic braking unavailable?
•Make sure the cross traffic alert systemis on. See Cross Traffic Alert (page387).
•The vehicle has sustained a rear endimpact. Contact an authorized dealerto have the sensors checked for propercoverage and operation.
•An ABS, traction control or stabilitycontrol event may have occurred. Crosstraffic braking resumes operation whenthe event is complete.
•Make sure there are no blocked orfaulted sensors. See Cross TrafficAlert (page 387).
•You recently had your vehicle serviced,or the battery disconnected. Drive yourvehicle a short distance to resumesystem operation.
