For proper operation, make sure that eachhub is fully engaged and that both hublocks are set to the same position (bothset to LOCK or both set to AUTO). Toengage LOCK, turn the hub lockscompletely clockwise; to engage AUTO,turn the hub locks completelycounterclockwise.
The ESOF 4WD system:
•provides 4x4 High engagement anddisengagement while the vehicle ismoving.
•is operated by a rotary control locatedon the instrument panel that allowsyou select 4x2, 4x4 High or 4x4 Lowoperation.
•uses auto-manual hub locks that canbe engaged and disengagedautomatically based on the 4x4 modeselected.
•will increase fuel economy when usedin the hub lock's recommended AUTOmode.
4WD Indicator Lights
Note:When a 4X4 system fault is present,the system will typically remain in whichever4X4 mode was selected prior to the faultcondition occurring. It will not default to 4X2in all circumstances. When this warning isdisplayed, have your vehicle serviced by anauthorized dealer.
4X2
Momentarily illuminates when2H is selected.
4X4 HIGH
Continuously illuminates when4H is selected.
4X4 LOW
Continuously illuminates when4L is selected.
CHECK 4X4
Displays when a 4X4 fault ispresent.
Using a Manual Shift On Stop(MSOS) 4WD system (If Equipped)
Note:High shift efforts may be encounteredwhen attempting to shift into and out of 4x4modes. It is recommended to allow thevehicle to roll at a speed below 3 mph(5 km/h) when shifting between modes.
2H (4X2)
For general on-road driving. Sends powerto the rear wheels only and should be usedfor street and highway driving. Providesoptimal smoothness and fuel economy athigh speeds
4H (4X4 High)
Used for extra traction such as in snow oricy roads or in off road situations. Thismode is not intended for use on drypavement.

Note:Make sure you install the oil filler capcorrectly.
Note:Soak up any spillage with anabsorbent cloth immediately.
ENGINE OIL CHECK - 6.7L
DIESEL
To check the engine oil level consistentlyand accurately, do the following:
1. Make sure that your vehicle is on levelground.
2. Run the engine until it reaches normaloperating temperature.
3.Make sure the parking brake is on. Makesure the transmission is in park (P) orneutral (N).
4. Switch the engine off and wait 15minutes for the oil to drain into the oilpan. Checking the engine oil level toosoon after you switch the engine offmay result in an inaccurate reading.
5. Open the hood. See Opening andClosing the Hood (page 322).
6. Remove the dipstick and wipe it witha clean, lint-free cloth. See UnderHood Overview (page 323).
7. Replace the dipstick and remove itagain to check the oil level. SeeEngine Oil Dipstick (page 327).
8.Make sure that the oil level is betweenthe maximum and minimum marks. Ifthe oil level is at the minimum mark,add oil immediately. See Capacitiesand Specifications (page 427).

It is very important to use predilutedcoolant meeting the correct specificationin order to avoid plugging the smallpassageways in the engine cooling system.See Capacities and Specifications(page 422). Incorrect prediluted coolantuse can cause damage not covered by thevehicle Warranty.
If the coolant level is at or below theminimum mark, add prediluted coolantimmediately.
To top up the coolant level do thefollowing:
1. Unscrew the cap slowly. Any pressureescapes as you unscrew the cap.
2. Add prediluted coolant meeting thecorrect specification. See Capacitiesand Specifications (page 415).
3. Add enough prediluted coolant toreach the correct level.
4.Replace the coolant reservoir cap, turnit clockwise until you feel a strongresistance.
5. Check the coolant level in the coolantreservoir the next few times you driveyour vehicle.
Note:During normal vehicle operation, thecoolant may change color from orange topink or light red. As long as the coolant isclear and uncontaminated, this color changedoes not indicate the coolant has degradednor does it require the coolant to be drained,the system to be flushed, or the coolant tobe replaced.
Do not mix different colors or types ofprediluted coolant in your vehicle. Mixingof prediluted coolant or using an incorrectprediluted coolant may harm the engineor cooling system components and maynot be covered by the vehicle Warranty.
In case of emergency, you can add a largeamount of water without predilutedcoolant in order to reach a vehicle servicelocation. On arrival do the following:
1. Drain the cooling system.
2. Chemically clean the cooling system.We recommend Motorcraft PremiumCooling System Flush.
3. Refill with prediluted coolant as soonas possible.
Water alone, without prediluted coolant,can cause engine damage from corrosion,overheating or freezing.
Do not use the following as a coolantsubstitute:
•Alcohol.
•Methanol.
•Brine.
•Any coolant mixed with alcohol ormethanol antifreeze.
Alcohol and other liquids can cause enginedamage from overheating or freezing.
Do not add extra inhibitors or additives tothe coolant. These can be harmful andcompromise the corrosion protection ofthe coolant.
Recycled Coolant
We do not recommend the use of recycledcoolant as an approved recycling processis not yet available.
Dispose of used engine coolant in anappropriate manner. Follow yourcommunity’s regulations and standardsfor recycling and disposing of automotivefluids.

For vehicles with overflow coolant systemswith a non-pressurized cap on the coolantrecovery system, add coolant to thecoolant recovery reservoir when the engineis cool. Add prediluted coolant to themaximum level. For all vehicles which havea coolant degas system with a pressurizedcap, or if it is necessary to remove thecoolant pressure relief cap on the radiator,follow these steps to add engine coolant:
1. Turn the engine off and let it cool.
2. Unscrew the cap slowly. Any pressureescapes as you unscrew the cap.
3. Fill the coolant reservoir slowly withprediluted engine coolant to within theminimum and maximum range on theengine coolant reservoir. If youremoved the radiator cap in anoverflow system, fill the radiator untilthe coolant is visible and the radiatoris almost full. If coolant is added tobring the level within the minimum andmaximum range when the engine is notcold, the system may remain underfilled.
4.Replace the coolant reservoir cap, turnit clockwise until you feel a strongresistance.
5. Check the coolant level in the coolantreservoir the next few times you driveyour vehicle. If necessary, add enoughprediluted engine coolant to bring thecoolant level to the proper level.
Note:If prediluted coolant is not available,use the approved antifreeze concentratediluting it to 50/50 with distilled water. SeeCapacities and Specifications (page 427).Using water that has not been deionizedmay contribute to deposit formation,corrosion or plugging of the small coolingsystem passageways.
If you have to add more than 1.1 qt (1 L) ofengine coolant per month, have yourvehicle checked as soon as possible.Operating an engine with a low level ofcoolant can result in engine overheatingand possible engine damage.
Note:During normal vehicle operation, thecoolant may change color from orange topink or light red. Engine and Secondary CoolingSystem Refill Procedure
The following procedure should be usedwhen refilling the engine or secondarycooling systems after it has been drainedor become extremely low:
1. Before you remove the cap, turn theengine off and let it cool.
2. When the engine is cool, wrap a thickcloth around the cap. Slowly turn capcounterclockwise until pressure beginsto release.
3.Step back while the pressure releases.
4.When you are sure that all the pressurehas been released, use the cloth to turnit counterclockwise and remove thecap.
5. Slowly add prediluted engine coolantto the coolant reservoir until thecoolant level is within the minimumand maximum range as listed on thereservoir.
6. Reinstall the pressure relief cap.
7. Start and run the engine at 2000 rpmfor 2 minutes.
8. Shut engine off, and remove thepressure relief cap as previouslyoutlined.
9. If required, add prediluted enginecoolant to the coolant reservoir untilthe coolant level is within the minimumand maximum range as listed on thereservoir.
10.Engine cooling system: RepeatStep 5 until the coolant level hasstabilized (is no longer dropping aftereach step) and the upper radiatorhose at the radiator is warm to thetouch (indicating that the enginethermostat is open and coolant isflowing through the radiator).
11.Check the secondary cooling system.Repeat Step 5 until the coolant levelhas stabilized (is no longer droppingafter each step) and the lowerpassenger side of the secondaryradiator is warm to the touch(indicating secondary thermostat isopen and coolant is flowing throughthe entire system).
12.Reinstall the pressure relief cap. Shutthe engine off and let it cool.
13. Check the coolant level in thereservoir before you drive your vehiclethe next few times.
14. If necessary, add prediluted enginecoolant to the coolant reservoir untilthe coolant level is within theminimum and maximum range aslisted on the reservoir. After anycoolant has been added, check thecoolant concentration.
Recycled Coolant
We do not recommend the use of recycledcoolant as an approved recycling processis not yet available.
Dispose of used engine coolant in anappropriate manner. Follow yourcommunity’s regulations and standardsfor recycling and disposing of automotivefluids.
Severe Climates
If you drive in extremely cold climates:
•It may be necessary to increase thecoolant concentration above 50%.
•A coolant concentration of 60%provides improved freeze pointprotection. Coolant concentrationsabove 60% decrease the overheatprotection characteristics of thecoolant and may cause enginedamage.

4. Drain the diesel fuel conditionermodule. Turn the drain plugcounterclockwise until it stops. Do notuse any tools to loosen the drain plug.Drain the filter, approximately0.5 gal(2 L), into an appropriate container.Do not re-use the fuel drained from themodule.
5.Tighten the drain plug, turn it clockwiseuntil it stops and you feel a strongresistance. Do not use any tools totighten the drain plug.
6. Switch the ignition on for 30 secondsand then switch the ignition off.Repeat this operation six times in a rowto purge any trapped air from the fuelsystem.
FUEL FILTER - 6.2L/6.8L
Your vehicle is equipped with a lifetimefuel filter that is integrated with the fueltank. Regular maintenance or replacementis not needed.
CHANGING THE 12V BATTERY
WARNINGS
Batteries normally produce explosivegases which can cause personalinjury. Therefore, do not allowflames, sparks or lighted substances tocome near the battery. When working nearthe battery, always shield your face andprotect your eyes. Always provide correctventilation.
When lifting a plastic-cased battery,excessive pressure on the end wallscould cause acid to flow through thevent caps, resulting in personal injury anddamage to the vehicle or battery. Lift thebattery with a battery carrier or with yourhands on opposite corners.
Keep batteries out of reach ofchildren. Batteries contain sulfuricacid. Avoid contact with skin, eyes orclothing. Shield your eyes when workingnear the battery to protect against possiblesplashing of acid solution. In case of acidcontact with skin or eyes, flushimmediately with water for a minimum of15 minutes and get prompt medicalattention. If acid is swallowed, call aphysician immediately.
Battery posts, terminals and relatedaccessories contain lead and leadcompounds. Wash hands afterhandling.

WARNINGS
This vehicle may be fitted with morethan one battery. Removing thebattery cables from only one batterydoes not disconnect your vehicle electricalsystem. Make sure you disconnect thebattery cables from all batteries whendisconnecting power. Failure to do so maycause serious personal injury or propertydamage.
Your vehicle is fitted with a Motorcraftmaintenance-free battery which normallydoes not require additional water.
When a battery replacement is required,you must use a recommendedreplacement battery that matches theelectrical requirements of the vehicle.
Note:After cleaning or replacing thebattery, make sure you reinstall the batterycover or shield.
Note:If you add electrical accessories orcomponents to the vehicle, it may adverselyaffect the low voltage battery performanceand durability. This may also affect theperformance of other electrical systems inthe vehicle.
For longer, trouble-free operation, keep thetop of the battery clean and dry.
If you see any corrosion on the battery orterminals, remove the cables from theterminals and clean with a wire brush. Youcan neutralize the acid with a solution ofbaking soda and water.
Because your vehicle’s engine iselectronically controlled by a computer,some control conditions are maintainedby power from the battery. When thebattery is disconnected or a new batteryis installed, the engine must relearn its idleand fuel trim strategy for optimumdriveability and performance. Flexible fuelvehicles (FFV) must also relearn theethanol content of the fuel for optimumdriveability and performance.
To restore the settings, do the following:
1. Apply the parking brake.
2. Shift into park (P) or neutral (N).
3. Switch off all accessories.
4. Press the brake pedal and start yourvehicle.
5. Run the engine until it reaches normaloperating temperature. While theengine is warming up, complete thefollowing: Reset the clock. See AudioSystem (page 441). Reset the powerwindows bounce-back feature. SeeWindows and Mirrors (page 95).Reset the radio station presets. SeeAudio System (page 441).
6.Allow the engine to idle for at least oneminute.
7.Drive the vehicle at least 10 mi (16 km)to completely relearn the idle trim andfuel trim strategy.
Note:If you do not allow the engine torelearn the idle and fuel trim strategy, theidle quality of your vehicle may be adverselyaffected until the engine computereventually relearns the idle trim and fueltrim strategy.
Note:For flexible fuel vehicles, if you areoperating on E85, you may experience poorstarts or an inability to start the engine anddriveability problems until the fuel trim andethanol content have been relearned.

3. Turn on the low beam headlamps toilluminate the wall or screen and openthe hood.
4. On the wall or screen you will observea flat zone of high intensity lightlocated at the top of the right handportion of the beam pattern. If the topedge of the high intensity light zone isnot at the horizontal reference line, theheadlamp will need to be adjusted.
5. Locate the vertical adjuster on eachheadlamp. Using a Phillips #2screwdriver, turn the adjuster eitherclockwise or counterclockwise in orderto adjust the vertical aim of theheadlamp.
Note:A. LED headlamp.
B. Halogen headlamp.
6. Repeat steps 3 thru 5 to adjust theother headlamp.
7.Close the hood and turn off the lamps.
Horizontal Aim Adjustment
Horizontal aim is not required for thisvehicle and is not adjustable.
CHANGING A BULB
WARNINGS
Switch the lamps and the ignition off.Failure to follow this warning couldresult in serious personal injury.
Bulbs become hot when in use. Letthem cool down before you removethem.
Use the correct specification bulb. SeeBulb Specification Chart (page 353).Install in the reverse order unless otherwisestated.
Front Park and Direction IndicatorLamp Bulbs
Note:To access the right-hand side bulbs,remove the air intake pipe. See Changingthe Engine Air Filter (page 356).
To access the left-hand side bulbs, removethe washer reservoir filler tube. Vehicles withdiesel engine only.
