GENERAL INFORMATION
See the following sections for directionson how to properly use safety restraintsfor children.
WARNINGS
Always make sure your child issecured properly in a device that isappropriate for their height, age andweight. Child safety restraints must bebought separately from your vehicle.Failure to follow these instructions andguidelines may result in an increased riskof serious injury or death to your child.
All children are shaped differently.The National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration and other safetyorganizations, base their recommendationsfor child restraints on probable child height,age and weight thresholds, or on theminimum requirements of the law. Werecommend that you check with a NHTSACertified Child Passenger Safety
WARNINGS
Technician (CPST) to make sure that youproperly install the child restraint in yourvehicle and that you consult yourpediatrician to make sure you have a childrestraint appropriate for your child. Tolocate a child restraint fitting station andCPST, contact NHTSA toll free at1-888-327-4236 or go towww.nhtsa.dot.gov. On hot days, the temperature insidethe vehicle can rise very quickly.Exposure of people or animals tothese high temperatures for even a shorttime can cause death or serious heatrelated injuries, including brain damage.Small children are particularly at risk.

Child Safety

Use a child safety seat (sometimes calledan infant carrier, convertible seat, ortoddler seat) for infants, toddlers, orchildren weighing 40 lb (18 kg) or less(generally age four or younger).
Using Lap and Shoulder Belts(Except Front Center Position ofSuper Cab and Crew Cab)
WARNINGS
Airbags can kill or injure a child in achild restraint. Never place arear-facing child restraint in front ofan active airbag. If you must use aforward-facing child restraint in the frontseat, move the seat upon which the childrestraint is installed all the way back.
Airbags can kill or injure a child in achild restraint. Properly restrainchildren 12 and under in the rear seatwhenever possible.
Depending on where you secure achild restraint, and depending on thechild restraint design, you may blockaccess to certain seatbelt buckleassemblies and LATCH lower anchors,rendering those features potentiallyunusable. To avoid risk of injury, make sureoccupants only use seating positionswhere they are able to be properlyrestrained.
When installing a child safety seat withcombination lap and shoulder belts:
•Use the correct seatbelt buckle for thatseating position.
•Insert the belt tongue into the properbuckle until you hear a snap and feel itlatch. Make sure the tongue is securelyfastened in the buckle.
•Keep the buckle release buttonpointing up and away from the safetyseat, with the tongue between the childrestraint and the release button, toprevent accidental unbuckling.
•Place the vehicle seat upon which thechild restraint will be installed in theupright position.
•Put the seatbelt in the automaticlocking mode. This vehicle does notrequire the use of a locking clip.
Perform the following steps wheninstalling the child restraint withcombination lap and shoulder belts:
Note:Although the child restraintillustrated is a forward facing child restraint,the steps are the same for installing a rearfacing child restraint.
1. Position the child safety seat in a seatwith a combination lap and shoulderbelt.
2. Pull down on the shoulder belt andthen grasp the shoulder belt and lapbelt together.

8.Remove remaining slack from the belt.Force the seat down with extra weight,for example, by pressing down orkneeling on the child restraint whilepulling up on the shoulder belt in orderto force slack from the belt. This isnecessary to remove the remainingslack that will exist once the extraweight of the child is added to the childrestraint. It also helps to achieve theproper snugness of the child restraintto your vehicle. Sometimes, a slightlean toward the buckle helps to removeremaining slack from the belt.
9. Attach the tether strap (if the childrestraint is equipped).
10. Before placing the child in the seat,forcibly move the seat forward andback to make sure the seat is securelyheld in place.
To check this, grab the seat at the belt pathand attempt to move it side to side andforward and back. There should be nomore than 1 in (2.5 cm) of movement forproper installation.
We recommend checking with a NHTSACertified Child Passenger SafetyTechnician to make certain the childrestraint is properly installed. In Canada,check with Transport Canada for referralto a Child Car Seat Clinic.
Using Lap and Shoulder Belts(Front Center Position of SuperCab and Crew Cab)
WARNINGS

The belt webbing below the tongue is thelap portion of the combination lap andshoulder belt. The belt webbing above thetongue is the shoulder belt portion of thecombination lap and shoulder belt.

necessary to remove the remainingslack that will exist once the extraweight of the child is added to the childrestraint. It also helps to achieve theproper snugness of the child restraintto your vehicle. Sometimes, a slightlean toward the buckle will additionallyhelp to remove remaining slack fromthe belt.

Using Lower Anchors and Tethersfor CHildren (LATCH)
WARNINGS
Do not attach two child safetyrestraints to the same anchor. In acrash, one anchor may not be strongenough to hold two child safety restraintattachments and may break, causingserious injury or death.
Depending on where you secure achild restraint, and depending on thechild restraint design, you may blockaccess to certain seatbelt buckleassemblies and LATCH lower anchors,rendering those features potentiallyunusable. To avoid risk of injury, make sureoccupants only use seating positionswhere they are able to be properlyrestrained.
The LATCH system is composed of threevehicle anchor points: two lower anchorswhere the vehicle seatback and seatcushion meet (called the seat bight) andone top tether anchor behind that seatingposition.
LATCH compatible child safety seats havetwo rigid or webbing mountedattachments that connect to the two loweranchors at the LATCH equipped seatingpositions in your vehicle. This type ofattachment method eliminates the needto use seatbelts to attach the childrestraint. However, you can still use theseatbelt to attach the child restraint if thelower anchors are not used. Forforward-facing child restraints, you mustalso attach the top tether strap to theproper top tether anchor if a top tetherstrap has been provided with your childrestraint.
Your vehicle has LATCH lower anchors forchild restraint installation at the followingseating positions (LATCH is not availableon Regular Cab):

Crew Cab and Super Cab
The lower LATCH anchors are at the rearsection of the rear seat between thecushion and seatback. Follow the childrestraint manufacturer's instructions toproperly install a child restraint with LATCHattachments.
Follow the instructions later in this chapteron attaching child safety seats with tetherstraps.
Attach LATCH lower attachments of thechild restraint only to the anchors shown.
Use of Inboard Lower Anchorsfrom the Outboard SeatingPositions (Center Seating Use)
WARNING
The standardized spacing for LATCHlower anchors is 11 in (280 mm)center to center. Do not use LATCHlower anchors for the center seatingposition unless the child restraintmanufacturer's instructions permit andspecify using anchors spaced at least asfar apart as those in this vehicle.
The lower anchors at the center of thesecond row rear seat are spaced 26 in(652 mm) apart. The standardized spacingfor LATCH lower anchors is 11 in (280 mm)center to center. You cannot install a childrestraint with rigid LATCH attachments atthe center seating position. LATCHcompatible child restraints (withattachments on belt webbing) can only beused at this seating position provided thatthe child restraint manufacturer'sinstructions permit use with the anchorspacing stated. Do not attach a childrestraint to any lower anchor if an adjacentchild restraint is attached to that anchor.

If the safety seat is not anchored properly,the risk of a child being injured in a crashgreatly increases.
If your child restraint system has a tetherstrap, and the child restraint manufacturerrecommends its use, we also recommendits use.
BOOSTER SEATS
WARNING
Never place, or allow a child to place,the shoulder belt under a child's armor behind the back because itreduces the protection for the upper partof the body and may increase the risk ofinjury or death in a crash.
Note:Some booster seat safety belt guidesmay not accommodate the shoulder portionof the inflatable safety belt.
Use a belt-positioning booster seat forchildren who have outgrown or no longerproperly fit in a child safety seat (generallychildren who are less than 4 feet 9 inches(1.45 meters) tall, are greater than age four(4) and less than age twelve (12), andbetween 40 pounds (18 kilograms) and80 pounds (36 kilograms) and upward to100 pounds (45 kilograms) ifrecommended by your child restraintmanufacturer). Many state and provinciallaws require that children use approvedbooster seats until they reach age eight, aheight of 4 feet 9 inches (1.45 meters) tall,or 80 pounds (36 kilograms).
Booster seats should be used until you cananswer YES to ALL of these questionswhen seated without a booster seat:
•Can the child sit all the way backagainst their vehicle seat back withknees bent comfortably at the edge ofthe seat cushion?
•Can the child sit without slouching?
•Does the lap belt rest low across thehips?
•Is the shoulder belt centered on theshoulder and chest?
•Can the child stay seated like this forthe whole trip?
Always use booster seats in conjunctionwith your vehicle lap and shoulder belt.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNINGS
Always drive and ride with theseatback upright and the lap beltsnug and low across the hips.
To reduce the risk of injury, makesure children sit where they can beproperly restrained.
Never let a passenger hold a child onhis or her lap while your vehicle ismoving. The passenger cannotprotect the child from injury in a crashwhich may result in serious injury or death.
All occupants of the vehicle,including the driver, should alwaysproperly wear their seatbelts, evenwhen an airbag supplemental restraintsystem is provided. Failure to properly wearyour seatbelt could seriously increase therisk of injury or death.
It is extremely dangerous to ride in acargo area, inside or outside of avehicle. In a crash, people riding inthese areas are more likely to be seriouslyinjured or killed. Do not allow people to ridein any area of your vehicle that is notequipped with seats and seatbelts. Be sureeveryone in your vehicle is in a seat andusing a seatbelt properly.
In a rollover crash, an unbeltedperson is significantly more likely todie than a person wearing a seatbelt.
Each seating position in your vehiclehas a specific seatbelt assemblywhich is made up of one buckle andone tongue that are designed to be usedas a pair. 1) Use the shoulder belt on theoutside shoulder only. Never wear theshoulder belt under the arm. 2) Neverswing the seatbelt around your neck overthe inside shoulder. 3) Never use a singlebelt for more than one person.
WARNINGS
When possible, all children 12 yearsold and under should be properlyrestrained in a rear seating position.Failure to follow this could seriouslyincrease the risk of injury or death.
Seatbelts and seats can become hotin a vehicle that has been closed upin sunny weather; they could burn asmall child. Check seat covers and bucklesbefore you place a child anywhere nearthem.
Front and rear seat occupants,including pregnant women, shouldwear seatbelts for optimumprotection in an accident.
All seating positions in this vehicle havelap and shoulder belts. All occupants ofthe vehicle should always properly weartheir seatbelts, even when an airbagsupplemental restraint system is provided.
The seatbelt system consists of:
•Lap and shoulder seatbelts.
•Shoulder seatbelt with automaticlocking mode, (except driver seatbelt).
•Height adjuster at the front outboardseating positions.
•Seatbelt pretensioner at the frontoutboard seating positions.
•Seatbelt warning light and chime.
•Crash sensors and monitoring systemwith readiness indicator.

1. To lengthen the lap belt, pull somewebbing out of the shoulder beltretractor.
2. While holding the webbing below thetongue, grasp the tip (metal portion)of the tongue so that it is parallel to thewebbing and slide the tongue upward.
3.Provide enough lap belt length so thatthe tongue can reach the buckle.
Fastening the Cinch Tongue
WARNING
The lap belt should fit snugly and aslow as possible around the hips, notacross the waist.
1.Pull the lap and shoulder belt from theretractor so that the shoulder beltportion of the seatbelt crosses yourshoulder and chest.
2. Be sure the belt is not twisted. If thebelt is twisted, remove the twist.
3. Insert the belt tongue into the properbuckle for your seating position untilyou hear a snap and feel it latch.
4. Make sure you securely fasten thetongue to the buckle by pulling on thetongue.
While you are fastened in the seatbelt, thelap and shoulder belt with a cinch tongueadjusts to your movement. However, if youbrake hard, turn hard, or if your vehiclereceives an impact of 5 mph (8 km/h) ormore, the seatbelt will become locked andhelp reduce your forward movement.
Using Seatbelts During Pregnancy
WARNING
Always ride and drive with yourseatback upright and the seatbeltproperly fastened. The lap portion ofthe seatbelt should fit snug and bepositioned low across the hips. Theshoulder portion of the seatbelt should bepositioned across the chest. Pregnantwomen should also follow this practice.
Pregnant women should always wear theirseatbelt. Position the lap belt portion of acombination lap and shoulder belt lowacross the hips below the belly and wornas tight as comfort will allow. Position theshoulder belt to cross the middle of theshoulder and the center of the chest.
