SITTING IN THE CORRECT
POSITION
WARNINGS
Sitting improperly, out of position orwith the seatback reclined too farcan take weight off the seat cushionand affect the decision of the passengersensing system, resulting in serious injuryor death in the event of a crash. Always situpright against your seat back, with yourfeet on the floor.
Do not recline the seatback as thiscan cause the occupant to slideunder the safety belt, resulting inserious injury in the event of a crash.
Do not place objects higher than theseatback to reduce the risk of seriousinjury in the event of a crash or duringheavy braking.
When you use them properly, the seat,head restraint, safety belt and airbags willprovide optimum protection in the eventof a crash.
We recommend that you follow theseguidelines:
•Sit in an upright position with the baseof your spine as far back as possible.
•Do not recline the seatback more than30 degrees.
•Adjust the head restraint so that thetop of it is level with the top of yourhead and as far forward as possible.Make sure that you remaincomfortable.
•Keep sufficient distance betweenyourself and the steering wheel. Werecommend a minimum of 10 in(25 cm) between your breastbone andthe airbag cover.
•Hold the steering wheel with your armsslightly bent.
•Bend your legs slightly so that you canpress the pedals fully.
•Position the shoulder strap of thesafety belt over the center of yourshoulder and position the lap straptightly across your hips.
Make sure that your driving position iscomfortable and that you can maintain fullcontrol of your vehicle.
HEAD RESTRAINTS
WARNINGS
Fully adjust the head restraint beforeyou sit in or operate your vehicle. Thiswill help minimize the risk of neckinjury in the event of a crash. Do not adjustthe head restraint when your vehicle ismoving.
The head restraint is a safety device.Whenever possible it should beinstalled and properly adjusted whenthe seat is occupied. An improperlyadjusted head restraint may notadequately protect an occupant during animpact from the rear.

KEYLESS STARTING (If Equipped)
Note:The system may not function if thepassive key is close to metal objects orelectronic devices, for example keys or a cellphone.
Note:A valid passive key must be locatedinside your vehicle to switch the ignition onand start your vehicle.
Ignition Modes
The keyless starting system has threemodes:
Off: Turns the ignition off.
•Without applying the brake pedal,press and release the button oncewhen the ignition is in the on mode, orwhen your vehicle is running but is notmoving.
On: All electrical circuits are operationaland the warning lamps and indicatorsilluminate.
•Without applying the brake pedal,press and release the button once.
Start: Starts your vehicle. The engine maynot start when your vehicle starts.
•Press the brake pedal, and then pressthe button for any length of time. Anindicator light on the button illuminateswhen the ignition is on and when yourvehicle starts.
STARTING A GASOLINE
ENGINE - 6.2L/6.8L
When you start the engine, the idle speedincreases. This helps to warm up theengine.
If the engine idle speed does not slowdown automatically, have your vehiclechecked by an authorized dealer.
Before starting the engine check thefollowing:
•Make sure all occupants have fastenedtheir safety belts.
•Make sure the headlamps andelectrical accessories are off.
•Make sure the parking brake is on.
•Move the transmission selector leverto position P.
•Turn the ignition key to the on position.
Note:Do not touch the accelerator pedal.
1. Fully depress the brake pedal.
2. Turn the key to the start position tostart your vehicle.
3. When the engine starts, release thekey, then gradually release theaccelerator pedal as the engine speedincreases.
Note:The engine may continue crankingfor up to 15 seconds or until it starts.
Note:If you cannot start the engine on thefirst try, wait for a short period and try again.

Guarding Against Exhaust Fumes
WARNING
Exhaust leaks may result in entry ofharmful and potentially lethal fumesinto the passenger compartment. Ifyou smell exhaust fumes inside yourvehicle, have your vehicle inspectedimmediately. Do not drive if you smellexhaust fumes.
Important Ventilating Information
If you stop your vehicle and then leave theengine idling for long periods of time, werecommend that you do one of thefollowing:
•Open the windows at least 1 inch (2.5centimeters).
•Set your climate control to outside air.
STARTING A DIESEL ENGINE -
6.7L DIESEL
Read all starting instructions carefullybefore you start your vehicle.
For temperatures below 32°F (0°C), theuse of the correct grade engine oil isessential for proper operation. Refer toengine oil specifications for moreinformation. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 427).
Your vehicle may have a cold weatherstarting strategy that prevents severeengine damage by assisting in enginelubrication warm-up. In extremely coldambient temperatures, this strategyactivates and prevents the acceleratorpedal from being used for 30 seconds afteryou start your vehicle. A message appearsin the information display as your vehiclewarms up. By not allowing the acceleratorpedal to be used, the engine oil is allowedto properly lubricate the bearings
preventing engine damage due to lack ofproper lubrication. After the 30 secondwarm-up period, the accelerator pedal willbe operational again and a messageappears informing you the vehicle is ok todrive.
When you start the engine in extremelycold temperatures -15°F (-26°C), werecommend that you allow the engine toidle for several minutes before you drivethe vehicle.
Before starting the engine check thefollowing:
•Make sure all occupants have fastenedtheir seatbelts.
•Make sure the headlamps andelectrical accessories are off.
•Make sure the parking brake is on.
•Make sure the transmission is in park(P).
Note:Do not press the accelerator duringstarting.
Diesel Engine Fast Start Glow PlugSystem
The diesel engine glow system consists of:
•Eight glow plugs (one per cylinder)
•Glow Plug Control Module
•Engine Coolant Temperature sensor
•Barometric pressure sensor
•Environmental temperature sensor
The powertrain and glow plug controlmodules electronically control the glowplug system. After you switch the ignitionon, the glow plug control moduleimmediately energizes the glow plugs. Theglow plug control module uses the enginecoolant temperature, barometric pressuresensor and environmental temperature

•Front wheel toe may requirere-adjustment to prevent prematureuneven tire wear. Specifications are inthe Ford Workshop Manual.
•Headlight aim may requirere-adjustment.
•The tire air pressures recommendedfor general driving are on the vehicle’sSafety Certification Label. Themaximum cold inflation pressure forthe tire and associated load rating ison the tire sidewall. Tire air pressuremay require re-adjustment within thesepressure limits to accommodate theadditional weight of the snowplowinstallation.
•Federal and some local regulationsrequire additional exterior lamps forsnowplow-equipped vehicles. Consultyour authorized dealer for additionalinformation.
Operating the Vehicle with theSnowplow Attached
Note:Do not use your vehicle for snowremoval until you have driven at least500 mi (800 km).
Ford recommends vehicle speed does notexceed 45 mph (72 km/h) whensnowplowing.
The attached snowplow blade restrictsairflow to the radiator, and may cause theengine to run at a higher temperature:Attention to engine temperature isespecially important when outsidetemperatures are above freezing. Anglethe blade to maximize airflow to theradiator and monitor engine temperatureto determine whether a left or right angleprovides the best performance.
Follow the severe duty schedule in yourScheduled Maintenance information forengine oil and transmission fluid changeintervals.
Snowplowing with your AirbagEquipped Vehicle
WARNINGS
Do not attempt to service, repair, ormodify the airbag supplementalrestraint system (SRS) or its fuses.Contact an authorized dealer.
Additional equipment for examplesnowplow equipment may affect theperformance of the airbag sensorsincreasing the risk of injury. Please refer tothe Body Builders Layout Book forinstructions about the appropriateinstallation of additional equipment.
All occupants of the vehicle,including the driver, should alwaysproperly wear their seatbelt, evenwhen provided with an airbagsupplemental restraint system (SRS).
Your vehicle is equipped with a driver andpassenger airbag supplemental restraintsystem. The supplemental restraint systemwill activate in certain frontal and offsetfrontal collisions when the vehicle sustainssufficient frontal deceleration.
Careless or high speed driving whileplowing snow that results in sufficientvehicle decelerations can deploy theairbags. Such driving also increases the riskof accidents.
Never remove or defeat the trippingmechanisms designed into the snowremoval equipment by its manufacturer.Doing so may cause damage to the vehicleand the snow removal equipment as wellas possible airbag deployment.
Engine temperature while plowing
When driving with a plow, your engine mayrun at a higher temperature than normalbecause the attached snowplow blade willrestrict airflow to the radiator.

POST-CRASH ALERT SYSTEM
The system flashes the direction indicatorsand sounds the horn (intermittently) in theevent of a serious impact that deploys anairbag (front, side, side curtain or safetycanopy) or the seatbelt pretensioners.
The horn and indicators turn off when:
•You press the hazard control button.
•You press the panic button on theremote entry transmitter (if equipped).
•Your vehicle runs out of power.
TRANSPORTING THE VEHICLE
WARNINGS
Block the wheels to help prevent thevehicle from moving.
Unexpected and possibly suddenvehicle movement may occur if youdo not take these precautions.
If you need to have your vehicle towed,contact a professional towing service or,if you are a member of a roadsideassistance program, your roadsideassistance service provider.
We recommend the use of a wheel lift anddollies or flatbed equipment to tow yourvehicle. Do not tow with a slingbelt. FordMotor Company has not approved aslingbelt towing procedure. Vehicledamage may occur if towed incorrectly, orby any other means.
Ford Motor Company produces a towingmanual for all authorized tow truckoperators. Have your tow truck operatorrefer to this manual for proper hook-upand towing procedures for your vehicle.

To clean the windshield and wiper blades:
•Clean the windshield with anon-abrasive glass cleaner. Whencleaning the interior of the windshield,avoid getting any glass cleaner on theinstrument panel or door panels. Wipeany glass cleaner off these surfacesimmediately.
•For windshields contaminated withtree sap, chemicals, wax or bugs, cleanthe entire windshield using steel wool(no greater than 0000 grade) in acircular motion and rinse with water.
•Clean the wiper blades with isopropylrubbing alcohol or windshield washerconcentrate.
Note: Do not use razor blades or othersharp objects to clean or remove decalsfrom the inside of the heated rear window.The vehicle warranty does not coverdamage caused to the heated rear windowgrid lines.
CLEANING THE INTERIOR
WARNINGS
Do not use cleaning solvents, bleachor dye on the vehicle’s safety belts,as these actions may weaken thebelt webbing.
On vehicles equipped withseat-mounted airbags, do not usechemical solvents or strongdetergents. Such products couldcontaminate the side airbag system andaffect performance of the side airbag in acollision.
For fabric, carpets, cloth seats, safety beltsand seats equipped with side airbags:
•Remove dust and loose dirt with avacuum cleaner.
•Remove light stains and soil withMotorcraft Professional StrengthCarpet & Upholstery Cleaner.
•If grease or tar is present on thematerial, spot-clean the area first withMotorcraft Spot and Stain Remover. InCanada, use Motorcraft Multi-PurposeCleaner.
•If a ring forms on the fabric after spotcleaning, clean the entire areaimmediately (but do not oversaturate)or the ring will set.
•Do not use household cleaningproducts or glass cleaners, which canstain and discolor the fabric and affectthe flame retardant abilities of the seatmaterials.
CLEANING THE INSTRUMENT
PANEL AND INSTRUMENT

WARNING
Do not use chemical solvents orstrong detergents when cleaning thesteering wheel or instrument panelto avoid contamination of the airbagsystem.
Note:Follow the same procedure ascleaning leather seats for cleaning leatherinstrument panels and leather interior trimsurfaces. See Cleaning Leather Seats(page 369).
Clean the instrument panel and clusterlens with a clean, damp and soft cloth,then use a clean, dry and soft cloth to drythese areas.

Vehicle Care

GENERAL INFORMATION
Use only approved wheel and tire sizes,using other sizes could damage yourvehicle. If you change the diameter of thetires from that fitted at the factory, thespeedometer may not display the correctspeed. Take your vehicle to an authorizedFord dealer to have the systemreprogrammed. If you intend to change thesize of the wheels from that fitted by themanufacturer, you can check the suitabilitywith an authorized dealer.
Additional information related to thefunctionality and maintenance of your tirescan be found later in this chapter. See TireCare (page 377).
The Ford recommended tire inflationpressures can be found on the Tire Label,which is located on the B-pillar or the edgeof the driver's door. This information canalso be found on the Safety ComplianceCertification Label (affixed to either thedoor hinge pillar, door-latch post, or thedoor edge that meets the door last post;next to the driver’s seating position).
Ford strongly recommends maintainingthese tire pressures at all times. Failure tofollow the tire pressure recommendationscan cause uneven treadwear patterns,reduced fuel economy, and adverselyaffect the way your vehicle handles.
Note:Check and set the tire pressure at theambient temperature in which you areintending to drive your vehicle and when thetires are cold.
Note:Check your tire pressures at leastonce per month.
Set the pressure for your spare tire to thehighest value given for your vehicle and tiresize combination (if equipped).
Notice to utility vehicle and truckowners
WARNINGS
Utility vehicles have a significantlyhigher rollover rate than other typesof vehicles. To reduce the risk ofserious injury or death from a rollover orother crash you must avoid sharp turns andabrupt maneuvers, drive at safe speeds forthe conditions, keep tires inflated to Fordrecommended pressures, never overloador improperly load your vehicle, and makesure every passenger is properly restrained.
In a rollover crash, an unbeltedperson is significantly more likely todie than a person wearing a seat belt.All occupants must wear seat belts andchildren/infants must use appropriaterestraints to minimize the risk of injury orejection.
Do not become overconfident in theability of four-wheel drive vehicles.Although a four-wheel drive vehiclemay accelerate better than a two-wheeldrive vehicle in low traction situations, itwon't stop any faster than two-wheel drivevehicles. Always drive at a safe speed.
