ABOUT THIS MANUAL
Thank you for choosing Ford. Werecommend that you take some time toget to know your vehicle by reading thismanual. The more that you know aboutyour vehicle, the greater the safety andpleasure you will get from driving it.
WARNING: Driving while distractedcan result in loss of vehicle control, crashand injury. We strongly recommend thatyou use extreme caution when using anydevice that may take your focus off theroad. Your primary responsibility is thesafe operation of your vehicle. Werecommend against the use of anyhand-held device while driving andencourage the use of voice-operatedsystems when possible. Make sure youare aware of all applicable local lawsthat may affect the use of electronicdevices while driving.

Note:Your vehicle’s powertrain controlsystems can detect and store informationabout vehicle modifications that increasehorsepower and torque output such aswhether or not performance-enhancingpowertrain components commonly referredto as performance chips have been used.This information will stay in the system’smemory and cannot be erased even if themodification is removed. Ford MotorCompany, Ford of Canada, Ford of Mexicoand service or repair facilities can retrievethis information when servicing your vehicle.Ford Motor Company may use thisinformation to determine if your warrantycovers any needed repairs.

Your new diesel engine will feel, drive andfunction somewhat differently than agasoline engine. Therefore it is veryimportant that you read and thoroughlyfamiliarize yourself and others operatingthe vehicle with this guide. There is aspecial procedure for turning off the dieselengine. See Starting a Diesel Engine(page 103). It is important to read andunderstand this material in order tomaintain the best service life for yourengine.
Ford may discontinue models or changespecifications without any notice andwithout incurring obligations.
Note:Either Ford Motor Company or anauthorized Ford dealer may have originallysold this incomplete vehicle to a vehiclemodifier who upfitted it. As a result, someof the options and features on this vehiclemay differ from what we describe in thismanual.
This manual may qualify the location of acomponent as left-hand side or right-handside. The side is determined when facingforward in the seat.

If these modified engine performancecharacteristics persist for an extendedperiod and either the service engine soonor powertrain malfunction, reduced power,electronic throttle control light isilluminated, have the system checked byan authorized dealer.

Diesel Lubrication System
It is important to change the engine oil atthe recommended service intervals orwhen indicated by the information displayto maintain oil viscosity. Extending the oiland filter change interval beyond therecommended interval can negativelyaffect engine performance, fuel economyand engine life. See Engine Oil Check(page 227).
Engine and secondary cooling system
The cooling system contains a primarycooling loop to cool the engine and asecondary cooling loop to cool thetransmission, charge air, and fuel. Thecoolant serves three primary purposes: toprovide heat transfer, freeze pointprotection, and corrosion protection usingadditives.
Vehicles with diesel engines typically areused to carry heavy loads and accumulatemileage rapidly. These two factors maycause the additives in the coolant to wearout in a shorter time. You can find moreinformation about coolant additives andcoolant change intervals in the coolantchapter. See General MaintenanceInformation (page 325). Operating theengine with insufficient coolant or coolantadditive can cause severe engine damage.
Selective catalytic reduction system
Your vehicle is equipped with a selectivecatalytic reduction system designed toreduce emission levels of nitrogen oxidesfrom the exhaust of your diesel engine. Thissystem relies on the use of Diesel ExhaustFluid (DEF) that you must replenish atcertain intervals. Failure to maintain properDEF levels or if the DEF becomescontaminated will result in vehicle speedlimitations or result in your vehicle enteringan idle-only mode. See SelectiveCatalytic Reductant System (page 120).
Minor Troubleshooting Guide
If the engine won’t crank
WARNING: Battery posts,terminals and related accessoriescontain lead and lead compounds. Washhands after handling.
Turn on the headlights. If the lights are dim,do not go on at all or when the ignition isturned to the start position, the lightsbecome dim or go out, the batteryconnections may be loose or corroded, orthe battery may be discharged. If there isa clicking or stuttering sound coming fromthe engine compartment when you turnthe key to the start position, this may alsoindicate a loose or corroded batteryconnection.
Check the battery connections at thebattery posts, cable connection to theengine grounding point and at the starterconnection.
If you suspect a discharged battery, haveit checked and corrected.

DATA RECORDING
WARNING: Do not connectwireless plug-in devices to the data linkconnector. Unauthorized third partiescould gain access to vehicle data andimpair the performance of safety relatedsystems. Only allow repair facilities thatfollow our service and repair instructionsto connect their equipment to the datalink connector.
We respect your privacy and arecommitted to protecting it. Theinformation contained in this publicationwas correct at the time of going to print,but as technology rapidly changes, werecommend that you visit the regional Fordwebsite for the latest information.
Your vehicle has electronic control unitsthat have data recording functionality andthe ability to permanently or temporarilystore data. This data could includeinformation on the condition and status ofyour vehicle, vehicle maintenancerequirements, events and malfunctions.The types of data that can be recorded aredescribed in this section. Some of the datarecorded is stored in event logs or errorlogs.
Note:Error logs are reset following a serviceor repair.
Note:We may provide information inresponse to requests from law enforcement,other government authorities and thirdparties acting with lawful authority orthrough a legal process. Such informationcould be used by them in legal proceedings.
Data recorded includes, for example:
•Operating states of systemcomponents, for example, fuel level,tire pressure and battery charge level.
•Vehicle and component status, forexample, wheel speed, deceleration,lateral acceleration and seatbeltstatus.
•Events or errors in essential systems,for example, headlamps and brakes.
•System responses to driving situations,for example, airbag deployment andstability control.
•Environmental conditions, for example,temperature.
Some of this data, when used incombination with other information, forexample, an accident report, damage to avehicle or eyewitness statements, couldbe associated with a specific person.
Service Data
Service data recorders in your vehicle arecapable of collecting and storingdiagnostic information about your vehicle.This potentially includes information aboutthe performance or status of varioussystems and modules in the vehicle, suchas engine, throttle, steering or brakesystems. In order to properly diagnose andservice your vehicle, Ford Motor Company(Ford of Canada in Canada), and serviceand repair facilities may access or shareamong them vehicle diagnosticinformation received through a directconnection to your vehicle whendiagnosing or servicing your vehicle.Additionally, Ford Motor Company (Fordof Canada, in Canada) may, wherepermitted by law, use vehicle diagnosticinformation for vehicle improvement orwith other information we may have aboutyou, for example, your contact information,to offer you products or services that mayinterest you. Data may be provided to our

Vehicles With SYNC
Mobile Device Data
If you connect a mobile device to yourvehicle, you can display data from yourdevice on the touchscreen for example,music and album art. You can share yourvehicle data with mobile apps on yourdevice through the system.
The mobile apps function operates by yourconnected device sending data to us in theUnited States. The data is encrypted andincludes the vehicle identification numberof your vehicle, the SYNC module serialnumber, odometer, enabled apps, usagestatistics and debugging information. Weretain it only as long as necessary toprovide the service, to troubleshoot, forcontinuous improvement and to offer youproducts and services that may be ofinterest to you according to yourpreferences and where allowed by law.
If you connect a cell phone to the system,the system creates a profile that links tothat cell phone. The cell phone profileenables more mobile features and efficientoperation. The profile contains, forexample, data from your phonebook, readand unread text messages and call history,including history of calls when your cellphone was not connected to the system.
If you connect a media device, the systemcreates and retains a media device indexof supported media content. The systemalso records a short diagnostic log ofapproximately 10 minutes of all recentsystem activity.
The cell phone profile, media device indexand diagnostic log remain in your vehicleunless you delete them and are generallyaccessible only in your vehicle when youconnect your cell phone or media device.If you no longer plan to use the system oryour vehicle, we recommend you use themaster reset function to erase the storedinformation.
System data cannot be accessed withoutspecial equipment and access to yourvehicle's module.

Vehicles With an Emergency CallSystem
When the emergency call system is active,it may disclose to emergency services thatyour vehicle has been in a crash involvingthe deployment of an airbag or activationof the fuel pump shut-off. Certain versionsor updates to the emergency call systemmay also be capable of electronically orverbally disclosing to emergency servicesoperators your vehicle location or other

WARNING: Vehicles with a highercenter of gravity (utility and four-wheeldrive vehicles) handle differently thanvehicles with a lower center of gravity(passenger cars). Avoid sharp turns,excessive speed and abrupt steering inthese vehicles. Failure to drive cautiouslyincreases the risk of losing control of yourvehicle, vehicle rollover, personal injuryand death.
Before you drive your vehicle, please readthis Owner’s Guide carefully. Your vehicleis not a passenger car. As with othervehicles of this type, failure to operate thisvehicle correctly may result in loss ofvehicle control, vehicle rollover, personalinjury or death.
Using Your Vehicle With aSnowplow
Do not use this vehicle forsnowplowing.
Your vehicle does not have a snowplowingpackage.
Using Your Vehicle as anAmbulance
If your light truck has the Ford AmbulancePreparation Package, it may be utilized asan ambulance. We urge ambulancemanufacturers to follow therecommendations of our IncompleteVehicle Manual, Ford Truck Body Builder’sLayout Book and the Qualified VehicleModifiers (QVM) Guidelines as well aspertinent supplements. Use of your light truck as an ambulance,without the Ford Ambulance PreparationPackage voids the Ford New VehicleLimited Warranty and may void theemissions warranties. In addition,ambulance usage without the preparationpackage could cause high underbodytemperatures, over-pressurized fuel and arisk of spraying fuel, which could lead tofires.
If your vehicle has the Ford AmbulancePreparation Package, it is indicated on theSafety Compliance Certification Label. Thelabel is on the driver side door pillar or onthe rear edge of the driver door. You candetermine whether the ambulancemanufacturer followed ourrecommendations by directly contactingthat manufacturer.

enhance personal safety and security whenappropriately used, particularly inemergency situations. Safety must beparamount when using mobilecommunications equipment to avoidnegating these benefits. Mobilecommunication equipment includes, butis not limited to, cellular phones, pagers,portable email devices, text messagingdevices and portable two-way radios.

Regulations such as those issued by theFederal Highway Administration or issuedpursuant to the Occupational Safety andHealth Act (OSHA), and state and locallaws and regulations may requireadditional equipment for the way youintend to use your vehicle. It is theresponsibility of the registered owner todetermine the applicability of such laws
and regulations to your intended use forthe vehicle, and to arrange for theinstallation of required equipment. Thedealer has information about theavailability of equipment which can beordered for your vehicle.
ENTERING, EXITING OR
CLIMBING ON THIS VEHICLE
WARNING: Do not carry itemswhile entering, exiting or climbing. Makesure you keep a firm grip. Always facethe vehicle step and handle system whileclimbing up and down. Do not climbbehind the cab unless you have threepoint contact with a step and handlesystem at all times.
You must be careful and deliberate tominimize the possibility of personal injuryfrom a slip and fall when entering, exitingor climbing on your vehicle. Always usethe steps and assist handles beforeclimbing. Do not skip any steps or assisthandles. Use three point contact at alltimes with at least two feet and one handor two hands and one foot firmly placedduring all phases of entering, exiting orclimbing. Always keep your shoe soles andhands clean. Keep the steps and assisthandles free of snow, ice, oil, grease,substances or debris. Be sure to take extracare in bad weather. Avoid wearing thickgloves. Always perform trailer hook-upwhile standing on the ground.
