Diesel Engine Information
The diesel engine fuel system is apressurized two-stage filtration systemand consists of:
•A frame-mounted Fuel and WaterSeparator primary filter with an electricfuel pump and water drain
•An engine-mounted secondary fuelfilter
•A fuel injector for each cylinder (8total)
•A high-pressure fuel pump
•A high-pressure fuel rail for eachcylinder bank (2 total)
•Numerous high-pressure pipes fromthe high-pressure pump to the rails,and rails to the injectors
The fuel and water separator removesboth water and impurities from the fuel.The engine-mounted filter filters finerimpurities from the diesel fuel. Theengine-mounted fuel filter and theframe-mounted fuel filter should bechanged at the recommended serviceinterval or when indicated by theinformation display LOW FUEL PRESSUREmessage. See Scheduled Maintenance(page 325).
The fuel and water separator should bedrained at regular intervals (recommendedat every oil change) or when indicated bythe information display and water in fuelindicator light. See Fuel Quality (page108).
Proper fuel filter maintenance and promptwater draining when the water in fuel lightilluminates is essential to prevent injectionequipment damage. Ignoring the water infuel light or the information displaymessage WATER IN FUEL DRAIN FILTERcan cause your vehicle to go into a reducedpower mode.
A frame-mounted electric fuel pumplocated inside the fuel and water separatordraws fuel from the fuel tank to providepressurized fuel to the engine. The fuelpump contains a pressure relief valve foroverpressure protection in the event ofrestricted flow.
The fuel injection system is controlledthrough the powertrain control module.
Engine Protection Mode
Ford diesel engines are equipped withengine protection and emission controlsystems. These systems monitor criticaltemperatures and pressures, and modifyengine operation accordingly. Thesemodified engine performancecharacteristics are normal.

•The gearshift lever must be in P (Park)or N (Neutral) in order for the starterto operate.
•Try operating the starter switch severaltimes. This operation may cleanpotentially corroded contacts or makethe switch temporarily operable untilyou can reach the dealer.
•If all electrical connections are tightand you need assistance to start, SeeJump Starting the Vehicle (page 190).
If engine cranks but won’t start
Prolonged starter cranking (in excess of 10seconds) could cause damage to thestarter motor or the high-pressure fuelpump.
•Check the fuel gauge. You may be outof fuel. If the gauge shows that thereis fuel in the tank, the trouble may bein the electrical system or the fuelsystem. If equipped with an auxiliarytank, be sure that the tank controlswitch is set for the tank with fuel andnot on an empty tank.
•Leaving your ignition key turned to onfor over two minutes without startingmay make starting difficult becausethe glow plugs will cease activation.Reset the system by turning the ignitionkey to off and then back to on again.
Note:If the system is out of fuel and theengine will not start, do not continuecranking the engine. Continued cranking candamage the high-pressure fuel pump.
If the engine runs hot
The following could cause the engine tooverheat:
•Lack of coolant
•Dirty cooling system.
•Plugged radiator fins, A/C condenserand/or oil cooler
•Malfunctioning fan drive
•Driving with frozen coolant
•Sticking thermostat
•Overloading or pulling heavy trailersduring hot weather
•Grill or radiator air blockage
•Slipping or missing drive belt
•Plugged or very dirty air filter
If fuses burn out
WARNING: Replacement fuses andcircuit breakers must always be thesame rating as the original equipmentshown. Never replace a fuse or circuitbreaker with one of a higher rating.Higher rated fuses or circuit breakerscould allow circuit overloading in theevent of a circuit malfunction, resultingin severe vehicle damage or personalinjury due to fire.
Burned-out or blown fuses usually indicatean electrical short-circuit, although a fusemay occasionally burn out from vibration.Insert a second fuse. If this fuseimmediately burns out and you cannotlocate the cause, return your vehicle toyour dealer for a circuit check. SeeChanging a Fuse (page 211).
Selective catalytic reduction systemspeed limit and Idle-only modes
If the vehicle’s speed is limited or in anidle-only mode, the selective catalyticreduction system may be limiting thevehicle’s functions due to low orcontaminated DEF. Check the DEF. SeeSelective Catalytic Reductant System(page 120).

DATA RECORDING

Your vehicle has electronic control unitsthat have data recording functionality andthe ability to permanently or temporarilystore data. This data could includeinformation on the condition and status ofyour vehicle, vehicle maintenancerequirements, events and malfunctions.The types of data that can be recorded aredescribed in this section. Some of the datarecorded is stored in event logs or errorlogs.
Note:Error logs are reset following a serviceor repair.
Note:We may provide information inresponse to requests from law enforcement,other government authorities and thirdparties acting with lawful authority orthrough a legal process. Such informationcould be used by them in legal proceedings.
Data recorded includes, for example:
•Operating states of systemcomponents, for example, fuel level,tire pressure and battery charge level.
•Vehicle and component status, forexample, wheel speed, deceleration,lateral acceleration and seatbeltstatus.
•Events or errors in essential systems,for example, headlamps and brakes.
•System responses to driving situations,for example, airbag deployment andstability control.
•Environmental conditions, for example,temperature.
Some of this data, when used incombination with other information, forexample, an accident report, damage to avehicle or eyewitness statements, couldbe associated with a specific person.
Service Data
Service data recorders in your vehicle arecapable of collecting and storingdiagnostic information about your vehicle.This potentially includes information aboutthe performance or status of varioussystems and modules in the vehicle, suchas engine, throttle, steering or brakesystems. In order to properly diagnose andservice your vehicle, Ford Motor Company(Ford of Canada in Canada), and serviceand repair facilities may access or shareamong them vehicle diagnosticinformation received through a directconnection to your vehicle whendiagnosing or servicing your vehicle.Additionally, Ford Motor Company (Fordof Canada, in Canada) may, wherepermitted by law, use vehicle diagnosticinformation for vehicle improvement orwith other information we may have aboutyou, for example, your contact information,to offer you products or services that mayinterest you. Engine Oil Pressure Gauge
Indicates engine oil pressure. At normaloperating temperature, the level indicatoris in the normal range. If the pressure gaugefalls below the normal range, stop yourvehicle, switch off the engine and checkthe engine oil level. Add oil if needed. If theoil level is correct, have your vehiclechecked by an authorized dealer.
Engine Coolant TemperatureGauge
WARNING: Do not remove thecoolant reservoir cap when the engine ison or the cooling system is hot. Wait 10minutes for the cooling system to cooldown. Cover the coolant reservoir capwith a thick cloth to prevent thepossibility of scalding and slowly removethe cap. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in personal injury.
Indicates engine coolant temperature. Atnormal operating temperature, the levelindicator is in the normal range. If theengine coolant temperature exceeds thenormal range, stop your vehicle as soon aspossible, switch off the engine and let theengine cool.
Fuel Gauge
The fuel gauge indicates about how muchfuel is in the fuel tank.
The arrow adjacent to the fuel pumpsymbol indicates on which side of yourvehicle the fuel filler door is located.
Note:The fuel gauge may vary slightlywhen your vehicle is moving or on a slope.
Low Fuel Reminder
A low fuel level reminder displays andsounds when the distance to emptyreaches 50 mi (80 km),25 mi (40 km),10 mi (20 km) and 0 mi (0 km) for allvehicle keys.
Note:The low fuel reminder can appear atdifferent fuel gauge positions depending onfuel economy conditions. This variation isnormal.
Distance to Empty
Indicates the approximate distance yourvehicle can travel on the fuel remaining inthe tank. Changes in driving pattern cancause the value to not only decrease butalso increase or stay constant for periodsof time.
Configurable Gauge
Transmission Fluid Temperature Gauge
Indicates transmission fluid temperature.At normal operating temperature, the levelindicator is in the normal range. If thetransmission fluid temperature exceedsthe normal range, stop your vehicle as soonas possible and verify the airflow is notrestricted by snow or debris blockingairflow through the grille.
Special operating conditions such assnowplowing, towing, or off-road use maycause higher than normal operatingtemperatures. See Special OperatingConditions Scheduled Maintenance(page 335).
To lower the transmission temperatureinto the normal range, alter the severity ofyour driving conditions. Operating thetransmission for extended periods with thegauge in the higher than normal area maycause internal transmission damage. If thegauge continues to show hightemperatures, see an authorized dealer.

Door Ajar
Displays when the ignition is onand any door is not completelyclosed.
Electronic Locking Differential (If
Equipped)
Illuminates when using theelectronic locking differential.
Engine Coolant Temperature
If it illuminates when your vehicleis moving, this indicates that theengine is overheating. Stop yourvehicle as soon as it is safe to do so andswitch the engine off. Have your vehiclechecked as soon as possible. See EngineCoolant Check (page 238).idk
Engine Oil Pressure
If it illuminates with the enginerunning, or when you are driving,this indicates a malfunction.Stop your vehicle as soon as it is safe todo so and switch off the engine. Check theengine oil level.
Note:Do not resume your journey if itilluminates despite the level being correct.Have the system checked as soon aspossible.
Exhaust Brake On (If Equipped)
The exhaust brake indicator lightilluminates when you switch theexhaust brake on.
Fasten Seatbelt
Illuminates and a tone soundsto remind you to fasten yourseatbelt.
High Beam
Illuminates when you switch onthe high beam headlamps. Itflashes when you use theheadlamp flasher.
Hydromax
If the light illuminates andremains on when the key is in theon position or the engine isrunning, this indicates inadequate hydraulicbooster pressure or reserve pump systemfailure. Stop the vehicle as soon aspossible and have your vehicle checked.
Low Fuel Level
Illuminates when the fuel levelis low or the fuel tank is nearlyempty. Refuel as soon aspossible.
Parking Brake Warning
Briefly illuminates when youswitch the ignition to the onposition, with the engine off. Italso illuminates when you apply theparking brake. If the park brake lamp doesnot illuminate at these times, seekimmediate service. Vehicles with the powerparking brake option: If the park brakewarning lamp begins to blink after settingthe parking brake, this may indicate afailure in the parking brake system. Havethe system checked as soon as possible.Driving extended distances with theparking brake engaged can cause brakefailure and the risk of personal injury.
Parking Lamps
Illuminates when you switch thelow beam headlamps or theparking lamps on.

A low fuel pressure condition has occurreddue to cold, low fuel level or fuel filters needto be changed. See Fuel Quality (page108).

Cold Weather Starting
WARNING: Do not use startingfluid, for example ether, in the air intakesystem. Such fluid could causeimmediate explosive damage to theengine and possible personal injury.
WARNING: Do not mix diesel withgasoline, gasohol or alcohol. This couldcause an explosion.
We recommend using the engine blockheater for starting when the ambienttemperature is at or below -9°F (-23°C).See Engine Block Heater (page 105).
When operating in cold weather, you canuse Motorcraft® cetane improvers ornon-alcohol-based cetane improvers froma reputable manufacturer as needed.
Do not crank the engine for more than 10seconds as starter damage may occur. Ifthe engine fails to start, turn the key to theoff position and wait 30 seconds beforetrying again.
Your vehicle may come with a coldweather starting strategy that preventssevere engine damage by assisting inengine lubrication warm-up. In extremelycold ambient temperatures, this strategyactivates and prevents the acceleratorpedal use for 30 seconds after startingyour vehicle. A message appears in theinformation display as your vehicle warmsup. By not allowing the accelerator pedaluse, the engine oil can properly lubricatethe bearings preventing engine damagedue to lack of proper lubrication. After the30 second warm-up period, theaccelerator pedal is operational again anda message appears informing you that yourvehicle is ready to drive.
When starting the engine in extremely coldtemperatures, for example -15°F (-26°C),we recommend you allow the engine toidle for several minutes before driving yourvehicle.
Illuminates when you switch theignition on as part of thepre-starting system.
1.Turn the key to the on position withoutturning the key to the start position. Donot start the engine until the wait tostart indicator turns off.
2.When the wait to start indicator turnsoff, turn the key to the start positionand release the key as soon as theengine starts. Once the engine starts,the glow plugs may remain on for aperiod. If you attempt to start theengine before the glow plug activationtime ends, but it fails to start, reset theglow plugs by turning the key to the offposition.
3.Once the engine starts, allow it to idlefor about 15 seconds. This is to protectthe engine. Do not increase enginespeed until the oil pressure gaugeindicates normal pressure.
SWITCHING OFF THE ENGINE
Allow the engine to idle for three to fiveminutes before shutting it down. The largerthe engine, the greater the need is for thisidling period.
Note:Try to limit engine idle to 10 minutes.Excessive idling reduces fuel economy.
