DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING
PINPOINT TEST E : NON-AXLE NOISE
TEST CONDITIONS
DETAILSIRESULTSIACTIONS
I El : INSPECT THE VEHICLE TRIM I
Check the radiator grille and trim panels to see
if they are the source of the noise.
Are the vehicle trim components causing the
noise?
+ Yes INSTALL new trim components or REPAIR
as necessary. ROAD TEST as necessary.

Check the NC system components for noise by
turning the
NC system on and off.
Is the
NC system causing the noise?
+ Yes
INSPECT the
NC system. REFER to: (412-
00 Climate Control System - General Informa-
tion)
Climate Control System (Diagnosis and Testing),
Climate Control System (Diagnosis and Testing).
ROAD TEST as necessary.
I E3: CHECK NO~FACTORY FITTED ACCESSORIES I
rn Check any non-factory installed accessories for
being the source of the noise. For example:
touch condition body-to-frame, antennas, deflectors and fog lights.
Are the accessories the cause of the noise?
+ Yes
ADJUST, REPAIR, or INSTALL new
accessories or fasteners as required. ROAD
TEST as necessary.
+ No
VERIFY the customer concern.

IN-VEHICLE REPAIR

22. Remove the timing belt.
19. Remove the timing belt tensioner and the
timing belt. Detension the timing belt and lock the timing
belt tensioner with the special tool.
Vehicles built 0912003 onwards
20. Remove the timing belt.
Detension the timing belt and lock the timing
belt tensioner with the special tool.
Discard the timing belt.

Installation
All vehicles
1. Set the crankshaft to approximately 20
degrees before TDC.
2m &~~~l~~:lnstall a hose (order no.
E890438S) to the special tool studs, to
prevent damage to the camshaft pulleys.
N0TE:Make sure the camshaft pulleys turn on the
camshafts.
Loosen the camshaft pulley retaining bolts.

IN-VEHICLE REPAIR
Vehicles built 0412005 onwards 16. Remove special tool.

tool, until the timing belt is correctly
positioned. Failure to follow this instruction
may result in personal injury, or may
damage the timing belt tensioner.
Tension the timing belt.
Remove the special tool.
All vehicles
15. CAUTIONS:
( , nlnstall a hose (order no. E890438S) to
the special tool studs, to prevent damage
to the camshaft pulleys. 17.
Remove the special tool.
ADO not tighten the camshaft pulley bolts 18. N0TE:Only turn the engine in its normal

N0TE:The camshafts must remain at TDC. Turn
the engine two revolutions.
N0TE:lnstall new camshaft pulley retaining bolts. 19. Install the special tool.
Using the special tool, tighten the camshaft Carefully turn the crankshaft against the

20. Check the valve timing.
If necessary loosen the camshaft pulleys and
correct the camshaft alignment.

Discard the timing belt.

27. Remove the timing belt.
Tension the timing belt tensioner by pulling
the timing belt and lock it with the special
tool.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Removal

Loosen the water pump pulley retaining
bolts.
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

2. Remove the air
cleaner.

3. Drain the cooling system.

pulley splash shield.

pulley is under tension from the accessory

it to one side.
