MANUAL TRANSMISSION
Using the Clutch
Note:During each shift, you must fully pressthe clutch pedal to the floor and fullyrelease the accelerator. Failure to followthis may cause increased shift efforts,prematurely wear transmissioncomponents, or cause gear clash or damageto the transmission. Make sure you properlyposition the floor mat so it does not interferewith the full extension of the clutch pedal.
Note:If you attempt to shift when the drivewheels are spinning with a loss of traction,it is possible to cause damage to thetransmission. Do not attempt to shift whenthe drive wheels do not have traction.
Note:Do not drive with your foot resting onthe clutch pedal or use the clutch pedal tohold your vehicle at a standstill whilewaiting on a hill. These actions will reducethe life of the clutch.
Your vehicle has a twin disc clutch. Due tothe high performance of the powertrain, acertain amount of noise from thetransmission is normal.
The manual transmission has a starterinterlock that prevents cranking the engineunless you fully press the clutch pedal.
To start the vehicle:
1.Make sure the parking brake is fully set.
2.Press the clutch pedal to the floor, thenput the transmission in neutral (N).
3.Start the engine, then press the brakepedal and release the parking brake.
4.Move the transmission to position 1 ,then slowly release the clutch pedalwhile slowly pressing on theaccelerator.
5.To reverse, lift up on the reverselockout ring found under the shift knoband move the transmission fully to theleft and forward.
Recommended Shift Speeds forMaximum Fuel Economy
When accelerating, upshift according tothe following chart:

Operating at High Speeds
Your ST vehicle is capable of high speedsand has tires rated for the vehicle’smaximum speed. Remember to drivesafely, obey all traffic laws and onlyoperate your ST vehicle at high speeds atlocations equipped and designed to do sosafely.

Before operating your vehicle at highspeeds:
•Verify correct tire pressures. See Tires(page 19).
•Inspect wheels and tires for wear anddamage. Replace any wheels or tiresthat have damage.
•Do not operate your vehicle at highspeeds with more than two passengersor while carrying cargo.

USING STABILITY CONTROL
The AdvanceTrac® system includestraction control and electronic stabilitycontrol. See the Traction Control andStability Control chapters of the Owner'sManual for more information.
Never switch off stability control or selectsport mode when an emergency wheel orcompact wheel is fitted as spare wheel.
AdvanceTrac® provides three modes ofoperation specially calibrated for the FocusST. These are controlled through theAdvanceTrac® button on the centerconsole.

Enhanced Torque VectoringControl
Enhanced torque vectoring control iscomprised of two elements:
•Torque vectoring control, which appliesbrake torque on the inner wheel in acurve for better traction and lessundersteer.
•Cornering understeer control whichcontrols the yaw response of thevehicle under braking and accelerationon high and low friction surfaces.
Unlike electronic stability control,enhanced torque vectoring control doesnot slow the vehicle. It helps controlexcessive wheel slip and gives the vehiclecornering agility. The system only increasesperformance. Because of this, the systemdoes not disable enhanced torquevectoring control when the AdvanceTrac®system is off.

ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE
Contact your roadside assistance centeror a professional towing service if you needto have your vehicle towed.
Ford recommends that your vehicle betowed with a wheel lift and dollies or withflatbed equipment. When towing with aflatbed, 4x4 blocks may help preventdamage when loading or unloading yourvehicle. Do not tow with a slingbelt. FordMotor Company has not approved aslingbelt towing procedure.
Note:If the vehicle is towed by other meansor incorrectly, vehicle damage may occur.

As standard, your ST vehicle is equippedwith low profile, high performance tiresthat are designed to optimize the drivingdynamics you expect in a ST vehicle. Thesetires are not optimized for off-road orwinter (snow or cold weather)performance, and the ride, noise and wearcharacteristics are different thannon-performance tires. Also, because oftheir lower profile, the tires are moresusceptible to damage due to potholesand rough roads. To make sure that yourtires perform as intended, it is importantthat you maintain your tires properly:
Note:Do not use tire chains on the originalwheels and tires of your vehicle. The use ofany type of tire chain on these tires maydamage your vehicle.
•Do not overload your vehicle. Maximumvehicle and axle weights are listed onthe tire information placard.
•Take extra caution when operating thevehicle near its maximum load,including assuring proper tire pressureand reducing speeds.
•Take extra caution when operating onrough roads to avoid impacts thatcould cause tire damage.
•If you encounter an abnormally harshimpact, inspect your tires for damage.
•Inspect your tires for damage on aregular basis. If a tire is damaged,replace it immediately.
•Proper suspension alignment is criticalfor maximum performance andoptimal tire wear. If you notice uneventire wear, have your alignment checked.
•When replacing tires, the only way tomaintain original performance is to usethe original equipment tire. If a differentsummer tire is used, it should be thesame size, speed rating and load ratingas the originally equipped tire. Replacetires as a set of four. Never mix tirebrands or models.
Tire Pressure
Note:You may need to remove the sparewheel from the spare wheel well to checkthe tire pressure.
•For tire pressures, see the placardlocated on the B-pillar inside thedriver's door.
•Always maintain your tire pressuresaccording to the tire informationplacard on the driver's door jamb, usingan accurate gauge.

•Tire pressures are specified cold. Checkthem after the vehicle has been parkedfor at least three hours. Do not reducepressure of warm tires.
•Check your tire pressure often tomaintain it properly. Tire pressure candiminish over time and fluctuate withtemperature.
Optional All-Season Tires
Your Focus ST may come equipped withan optional All-Season performance tire.This choice will provide the benefit of fourseason mobility without requiring theinstallation of winter tires. It is importantto realize that ultimate summerperformance will be reduced relative tothe standard equipment summer only tire.Additionally, ultimate winter traction andcontrol will be less than a dedicated wintertire would provide. If you drive during thewinter months in areas with heavy snowfalland/or hilly terrain, you may wish to installa dedicated winter tire if ultimate tractionand control is desired.
USING WINTER TIRES
The standard equipment tires on your STvehicle are designed for maximumperformance in dry and wet summerconditions. They are not designed forwinter use on ice or snow and you cannotuse them with snow chains. Ford does notrecommend using the original equipmenttires when temperatures drop toapproximately 41°F (5°C) or below(depending on tire wear and environmentalconditions) or in snow and ice conditions.You must use winter or all-season tires ifyou will be operating your vehicle in theseconditions.
•Even with clear, dry driving conditionsdo not operate your vehicle aboveposted speed limits or perform highspeed maneuvers with winter tires.
•Do not use tire chains on the originalwheels and tires of your vehicle. Theuse of any type of tire chain on thesetires may damage your vehicle.
The following table lists acceptable tiresizes for winter tires. Tire speed and loadratings should match those of the originallyequipped tires as closely as possible. If itis required to fit winter tires with a speedrating less than the original equipment tires(to fit snow chains, for example), be awareof the maximum speed rating for the tireand never exceed.
