WINDSHIELD WIPERS
Note:Fully defrost the windshield beforeyou switch the windshield wipers on.
Note:Make sure you switch the windshieldwipers and vehicle power off before usingan automatic car wash.
Note: If streaks or smears appear on thewindshield, clean the windshield and thewiper blades. See Checking the WiperBlades (page 223). If that does not resolvethe issue, install new wiper blades. SeeChanging the Front Wiper Blades (page223).
Note:Do not operate the wipers on a drywindshield. This may scratch the glass,damage the wiper blades or cause the wipermotor to burn out. Always use thewindshield washers before wiping a drywindshield.
Note:When wiping on dry glass, the wipersmay switch to the next lower operatingmode (low-speed or intermittent). Theprevious operation mode may resume afterthe windshield becomes wet again.

Push the wiper lever up to switch thewipers on, and then use the rotary controlto adjust the intermittent wipe interval.
Speed Dependent Wipers (If Equipped)
When your vehicle speed increases, theinterval between wipes decreases.
WINDSHIELD WASHERS
Note:Do not operate the washers whenthe washer reservoir is empty. This maycause the washer pump to overheat.

To operate the washers and spray thewindshield, pull the lever toward you.When you release the lever, the wipers willoperate for a short time.
REAR WINDOW WIPER AND
WASHERS (If Equipped)
Rear Window Wiper
Note:Make sure you switch the rearwindow wiper and ignition off before usingan automatic car wash.
Intermittent wipe.A

Off.C
Press the top of the button to switchintermittent wipe on. Press the top of thebutton again to switch low speed wipe on.Press the bottom of the button to switchthe rear window wiper off.
When you shift into reverse (R) and thefront wipers are on, the rear wiper mayautomatically turn on to intermittent wipe.
Rear Window Washer
Push the lever away from you to operatethe rear window washer. When you releasethe lever, wiping continues for a shortperiod of time.

Push the lever away from you to switchthe high beam on.
Push the lever forward again or pull thelever toward you to switch the high beamsoff.
Headlamp Flasher
Slightly pull the lever toward you andrelease it to flash the headlamps.
AUTOLAMPS (If Equipped)
WARNING
The system does not relieve you ofyour responsibility to drive with duecare and attention. You may need tooverride the system if it does not turn theheadlamps on in low visibility conditions,for example daytime fog.
When the lighting control is in theautolamps position, the headlamps turnon in low light situations, or when thewipers turn on.
The headlamps remain on for a period oftime after you switch the ignition off. Usethe information display controls to adjustthe period of time that the headlampsremain on.
Note: If you switch the autolamps on, youcannot switch the high beams on until thesystem turns the low beams on.
Windshield Wiper ActivatedHeadlamps
When you switch the autolamps on, theheadlamps turn on within 10 seconds ofswitching the wipers on. They turn offapproximately 60 seconds after you switchthe windshield wipers off.
The headlamps do not turn on with thewipers:
•During a single wipe.
•When using the windshield washers.
•If the wipers are in intermittent mode.
Note:If you switch the autolamps and theautowipers on, the headlamps turn on whenthe windshield wipers continuously operate.
INSTRUMENT LIGHTING
DIMMER
Note:You disable the manual dimmerwhen you adjust the setting to AutoDimming in the information display. SeeInformation Displays (page 92).

Service Position
Set the windshield wipers in the serviceposition to change the wiper blades. Thewindshield wipers return to the startingposition when you switch the ignition on.
Note:You can use the service position inwinter to provide easier access to the wiperblades for freeing them from snow and ice.Make sure the windshield is free from snowand ice before you switch the ignition on.
1.Switch the ignition on.
2.Switch the ignition off and press andhold the wiper lever in position A withinthree seconds.
3.Release the wiper lever when thewindshield wipers reach the serviceposition.
Note:You can also move the wiper armsto the service position manually when theignition is off. Do not move the wiper armsto the service position manually when theignition is on. The wiper arms lock when youswitch the ignition on.
Changing the Windshield WiperBlades
Note:Do not hold the wiper blade whenlifting the wiper arm.
1.Lift the wiper arm and then press thewiper blade locking buttons together.
Note:Make sure that the wiper arm doesnot spring back against the glass when thewiper blade is not attached.
2.Slightly rotate the wiper blade.
3.Remove the wiper blade.
4.To install, reverse the removalprocedure.
Note:Make sure that the wiper blade locksinto place.
CHANGING THE REAR WIPER
BLADES
Note:Do not hold the wiper blade whenlifting the wiper arm.

•Never wash or rinse any ignition coil,spark plug wire or spark plug well, orthe area in and around these locations.
•Cover the battery, power distributionbox, and air filter assembly to preventwater damage when cleaning theengine.
CLEANING THE WINDOWS AND
WIPER BLADES
Car wash chemicals and environmentalfallout can result in windshield and wiperblade contamination. Dirty windshield andwipers will result in poor windshield wiperoperation. Keep the windshield and wiperblades clean to maintain windshield wiperperformance.
To clean the windshield and wiper blades:
•Clean the windshield with anon-abrasive glass cleaner. Whencleaning the interior of the windshield,avoid getting any glass cleaner on theinstrument panel or door panels. Wipeany glass cleaner off these surfacesimmediately.
•For windshields contaminated withtree sap, chemicals, wax or bugs, cleanthe entire windshield using steel wool(no greater than 0000 grade) in acircular motion and rinse with water.
•Clean the wiper blades with isopropylrubbing alcohol or windshield washerconcentrate.
Note: Do not use razor blades or othersharp objects to clean or remove decalsfrom the inside of the heated rear window.The vehicle warranty does not coverdamage caused to the heated rear windowgrid lines.
CLEANING THE INTERIOR
WARNINGS
Do not use cleaning solvents, bleachor dye on the vehicle's seatbelts, asthese actions may weaken the beltwebbing.
On vehicles equipped withseat-mounted airbags, do not usechemical solvents or strongdetergents. Such products couldcontaminate the side airbag system andaffect performance of the side airbag in acrash.
For fabric, carpets, cloth seats and seatsequipped with side airbags:
•Remove dust and loose dirt with avacuum cleaner.
•Remove light stains and soil withMotorcraft Professional StrengthCarpet & Upholstery Cleaner.
•If grease or tar is present on thematerial, spot-clean the area first withMotorcraft Spot and Stain Remover. InCanada, use Motorcraft Multi-PurposeCleaner.
•If a ring forms on the fabric after spotcleaning, clean the entire areaimmediately (but do not oversaturate)or the ring will set.
•Do not use household cleaningproducts or glass cleaners, which canstain and discolor the fabric and affectthe flame retardant abilities of the seatmaterials.

Body
•Wash your vehicle thoroughly toremove dirt, grease, oil, tar or mud fromexterior surfaces, rear-wheel housingand the underside of front fenders.
•Periodically wash your vehicle if it isstored in exposed locations.
•Touch-up exposed or primed metal toprevent rust.
•Cover chrome and stainless steel partswith a thick coat of auto wax to preventdiscoloration. Re-wax as necessarywhen you wash your vehicle.
•Lubricate all hood, door and luggagecompartment hinges and latches witha light grade oil.
•Cover interior trim to prevent fading.
•Keep all rubber parts free from oil andsolvents.
Engine
•Change the engine oil and filter prior tostorage because used engine oilcontains contaminates which maycause engine damage.
•Start the engine every 15 days for aminimum of 15 minutes. Run at fast idlewith the climate controls set to defrostuntil the engine reaches normaloperating temperature.
•With your foot on the brake, shiftthrough all the gears while the engineis running.
•We recommend that you change theengine oil before you use your vehicleagain.
Fuel system
•Fill the fuel tank with high-quality fueluntil the first automatic shutoff of thefuel pump nozzle.
Cooling system
•Protect against freezing temperatures.
•When removing your vehicle fromstorage, check coolant fluid level.Confirm that there are no coolingsystem leaks and that fluid is at therecommended level.
Battery
•Check and recharge as necessary. Keepconnections clean.
•If storing your vehicle for more than 30days without recharging the battery,we recommend that you disconnectthe battery cables to maintain batterycharge for quick starting.
Note:It is necessary to reset memoryfeatures if battery cables are disconnected.
Brakes
•Make sure the brakes and parking brakerelease fully.
Tires
•Maintain recommended air pressure.
Miscellaneous
•Make sure all linkages, cables, leversand pins under your vehicle are coveredwith grease to prevent rust.
•Move vehicles at least 25 ft (7.5 m)every 15 days to lubricate working partsand prevent corrosion.
Removing Vehicle From Storage
When your vehicle is ready to come out ofstorage, do the following:
•Wash your vehicle to remove any dirtor grease film build-up on windowsurfaces.
•Check windshield wipers for anydeterioration.
