U.S. DOT Tire IdentificationNumber
Both United States and CanadaFederal regulations require tiremanufacturers to placestandardized information on thesidewall of all tires. Thisinformation identifies anddescribes the fundamentalcharacteristics of the tire and alsoprovides a U.S. DOT TireIdentification Number for safetystandard certification and in caseof a recall.
This begins with the letters DOTand indicates that the tire meetsall federal standards. The nexttwo numbers or letters are theplant code designating where itwas manufactured, the next twoare the tire size code and the lastfour numbers represent the weekand year the tire was built. Forexample, the numbers 317 meanthe 31st week of 1997. After 2000,the numbers go to four digits. Forexample, 2501 means the 25thweek of 2001. The numbers inbetween are identification codesused for traceability. Thisinformation is used to contactcustomers if a tire defect requiresa recall.
USING SUMMER TIRES
Summer tires provide superiorperformance on wet and dry roads.Summer tires do not have the Mud andSnow (M+S or M/S) tire traction rating onthe tire side wall. Since summer tires donot have the same traction performanceas All-season or Snow tires, we do notrecommend using summer tires whentemperatures drop to about 45°F (7°C) orbelow, depending on tire wear andenvironmental conditions, or in snow andice conditions. Like any tire, summer tireperformance is affected by tire wear andenvironmental conditions. If you must drivein those conditions, we recommend usingMud and Snow (M+S, M/S), All-season orSnow tires.
Always store your summer tires indoors attemperatures above 19°F (-7°C). Therubber compounds used in these tires loseflexibility and may develop surface cracksin the tread area at temperatures below19°F (-7°C). If the tires have beensubjected to 19°F (-7°C) or less, warmthem in a heated space to at least 41°F(5°C) for at least 24 hours before installingthem on a vehicle, or moving the vehiclewith the tires installed, or checking tireinflation. Always inspect the tires afterstorage periods and before use.

USING WINTER TIRES
We recommend that you use winter orall-season tires carrying this symbol whenthe temperature is 45°F (7°C) or lower, orin snow and ice conditions.
When using winter tires, install them on allwheels and inflate them to therecommended tire pressures listed on thetire label. See Locating the SafetyCompliance Certification Labels (page291).
WARNING: Wheels and tires mustbe the same size, load index and speedrating as those originally fitted on thevehicle. Use of any other tire or wheelcan affect the safety and performanceof your vehicle. Additionally, the use ofnon-recommended tires and wheels cancause steering, suspension, axle, transfercase or power transfer unit failure.Follow the recommended tire inflationpressures found on the SafetyCompliance Certification label, or theTire Label on the B-Pillar or the edge ofthe driver door. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in loss of vehiclecontrol, vehicle rollover, or personal injuryor death.
USING SNOW CHAINS
WARNING: Do not exceed 30 mph(50 km/h). Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in the loss ofcontrol of your vehicle, personal injury ordeath.
WARNING: Do not use snow chainson snow-free roads.
WARNING: Only fit snow chains tospecified tires.
WARNING: If your vehicle is fittedwith wheel trims, remove them beforefitting snow chains.
WARNING: Remember that evenadvanced technology cannot defy thelaws of physics. It's always possible tolose control of a vehicle due toinappropriate driver input for theconditions. Aggressive driving on anyroad condition can cause you to losecontrol of your vehicle increasing the riskof personal injury or property damage.Activation of the electronic stabilitycontrol system is an indication that atleast some of the tires have exceededtheir ability to grip the road; this couldreduce the operator's ability to controlthe vehicle potentially resulting in a lossof vehicle control, vehicle rollover, personal injury and death.
WARNING: Wheels and tires mustbe the same size, load index and speedrating as those originally fitted on thevehicle. Use of any other tire or wheelcan affect the safety and performanceof your vehicle. Additionally, the use ofnon-recommended tires and wheels cancause steering, suspension, axle, transfercase or power transfer unit failure.Follow the recommended tire inflation

pressures found on the SafetyCompliance Certification label, or theTire Label on the B-Pillar or the edge ofthe driver door. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in loss of vehiclecontrol, vehicle rollover, or personal injuryor death.
The tires on your vehicle could haveall-weather treads to provide traction inrain and snow. In some climates you needto use snow tires and chains on yourvehicle in emergency situations or ifrequired by law.
Note:The suspension insulation andbumpers help prevent vehicle damage. Donot remove these components from yourvehicle when using snow tires and chains.
Note:Driving too fast for road conditionscreates the possibility of loss of vehiclecontrol. Driving at very high speeds forextended periods of time may result indamage to vehicle components.
Note:Snow chains could damagealuminum wheels.
Follow these guidelines when using snowtires and chains:
•On non-GT models, use ultra lowprofile cables, 10 mm or less indimension as measured on the sidewallof your tire, only with 225/60R18 or225/55R19 all season tires.
•On GT models, use ultra low profilecables, 10 mm or less in dimension asmeasured on the sidewall of your tire, only with 225/55R19 all season tires.
•Do not use snow chains or cables with245/45R20.
•Not all S-class snow chains or cablesmeet the same restrictions. Chains ofthis size restriction include a tensioningdevice.
•Purchase chains or cables from amanufacturer that clearly labels bodyto tire dimension restrictions.
•Install snow chains or cables in pairson the rear tires only.
•When driving with snow chains do notexceed 30 mph (50 km/h) or themaximum speed recommended by thechain manufacturer, whichever is less.
•Install cables securely, verifying thatthe cables do not touch any wiring orbrake lines.
•Drive cautiously. If you hear the cablesrub or bang against the vehicle, stopand retighten them. If this does notwork, remove the cables to preventvehicle damage.
•Remove the tire chains when they areno longer needed. Do not use snowchains on dry roads.
If you have any questions regarding snowchains or cables, contact your authorizeddealer.

CHECKING THE TIRE
PRESSURES
Safe operation of your vehiclerequires that your tires areproperly inflated. Every day beforeyou drive, check your tires.
At least once a month and beforelong trips, inspect each tire andcheck the tire pressure with a tiregauge. Inflate all tires to therecommended inflation pressure.See Inflating the Tires (page351).
INFLATING THE TIRES
WARNING: Under-inflationis the most common cause oftire failures and may result insevere tire cracking, treadseparation or blowout, withunexpected loss of vehiclecontrol and increased risk ofinjury. Under-inflation increasessidewall flexing and rollingresistance, resulting in heatbuildup and internal damage tothe tire. It also may result inunnecessary tire stress, irregularwear, loss of vehicle control andaccidents. A tire can lose up tohalf of its air pressure and notappear to be flat!
WARNING: Do not use thetire pressure displayed in theinformation display as a tirepressure gauge. Failure to followthis instruction could result inpersonal injury or death.
Use the recommended coldinflation pressure for optimum tireperformance and wear.Under-inflation or over-inflationmay cause uneven treadwearpatterns.
Inflate your tires to therecommended inflation pressureeven if it is less than the maximuminflation pressure informationfound on the tire. You can find thetire label with the recommendedtire inflation pressure next to thetire size on the B-Pillar or the edgeof the driver door.
The recommended tire inflationpressure is also found on theSafety Compliance CertificationLabel, affixed to either the doorhinge pillar, door-latch post, or thedoor edge that meets thedoor-latch on the B-pillar, or onthe edge of the driver door.
Failure to follow the tire pressurerecommendations can causeuneven treadwear patterns andadversely affect the way yourvehicle handles.

WHAT IS THE TIRE PRESSURE
MONITORING SYSTEM
The tire pressure monitoringsystem measures the vehicle'stire pressures. A warning lampilluminates if one or more tires aresignificantly underinflated or if there is asystem malfunction.
TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING
SYSTEM OVERVIEW
WARNING: Under-inflation is themost common cause of tire failures andmay result in severe tire cracking, treadseparation or blowout, with unexpectedloss of vehicle control and increased riskof injury. Under-inflation increasessidewall flexing and rolling resistance, resulting in heat buildup and internaldamage to the tire. It also may result inunnecessary tire stress, irregular wear, loss of vehicle control and accidents. Atire can lose up to half of its air pressureand not appear to be flat!
WARNING: To determine therequired pressure(s) for your vehicle, seethe Safety Compliance CertificationLabel (on the door hinge pillar,door-latch post or the door edge thatmeets the door-latch post, next to thedriver seat) or the Tire Label on theB-Pillar or the edge of the driver door.
Each tire, including the spare (if provided),should be checked monthly when cold andinflated to the inflation pressurerecommended by the vehicle manufactureron the vehicle placard or tire inflationpressure label. (If your vehicle has tires ofa different size than the size indicated onthe vehicle placard or tire inflation pressurelabel, you should determine the proper tireinflation pressure for those tires).
As an added safety feature, your vehiclehas been equipped with a Tire PressureMonitoring System (TPMS) thatilluminates a low tire pressure telltalewhen one or more of your tires issignificantly under-inflated. Accordingly, when the low tire pressure telltaleilluminates, you should stop and checkyour tires as soon as possible, and inflatethem to the proper pressure. Driving on asignificantly under-inflated tire causes thetire to overheat and can lead to tire failure.Under-inflation also reduces fuel efficiencyand tire tread life, and may affect thevehicle’s handling and stopping ability.
Please note that the TPMS is not asubstitute for proper tire maintenance, andit is the driver’s responsibility to maintaincorrect tire pressure, even if under-inflationhas not reached the level to triggerillumination of the TPMS low tire pressuretelltale.
Your vehicle has also been equipped witha TPMS malfunction indicator to indicatewhen the system is not operating properly. The TPMS malfunction indicator iscombined with the low tire pressuretelltale. When the system detects amalfunction, the telltale will flash forapproximately one minute and then remaincontinuously illuminated. This sequencewill continue upon subsequent vehiclestart-ups as long as the malfunction exists.
