ON and START, or by applying the
parking brake when the ignition
is turned to the ON position. If the
brake system warning light does not
illuminate at this time, seek service
immediately from your authorized
dealer. Illumination after releasing the
parking brake indicates low brake fluid
level and the brake system should be
inspected immediately by your
servicing authorized dealer.
5. a uTOlamPs (if equipped)
The autolamp system provides light
sensitive automatic on-off control of
the exterior lights normally controlled
by the headlamp control. The
autolamp system also keeps the lights
on for approximately 20 seconds. On
vehicles equipped with a message
center, you can select a delay from
0–180 seconds, after the ignition
switch is turned to OFF. To turn
autolamps on, rotate the control
counterclockwise. To turn autolamps
off, rotate the control clockwise to OFF.
6. FOglamPs (if equipped)
The headlamp control operates the
foglamps. The foglamps can be turned
on when the headlamp control is in
the , or and position
and the high beams are not turned on.
7. sPeed c OnTrOl
To operate, press the ON button. To
set a speed, press SET +. To set a
higher speed, press SET +. To set a
lower speed, press SET -. To disengage
speed control, press the brake pedal
or press OFF. Pressing RES will return
to a previously set speed as long as
the speed control was not turned off.

It is important to maintain your vehicle to keep it running in peak condition. Engine oil and filter changes along with fuel filter (two fuel filters on diesel vehicles) and engine coolant inspection/replacement are common maintenance items that can be done to prolong the life of your engine. If you drive your vehicle in severe situations, more frequent service will be required on some items. Please refer to the scheduled maintenance information chapter of your diesel supplement if your vehicle is equipped with a diesel engine or the separate Scheduled Maintenance Guide if your vehicle is equipped with a gasoline engine.
engine Fan OPera TiOn
Your vehicle is equipped with a high performance clutched cooling fan. When the clutch engages, the fan spins faster to provide more air to cool the engine. This typically occurs when carrying heavy loads, towing a trailer or with high outside temperatures. As fan speed increases (and as the clutch engages), you may notice an increase in fan noise which is normal. When extra cooling is no longer
required, the clutch disengages and the noise will go away. In most everyday driving conditions, the fan spins slower and the clutch is not engaged; this improves fuel economy and reduces fan speed/noise.
cOld wea Ther sTar Ting
It is recommended that the engine block heater be used for starting when the temperature is -10°F (-23°C) or colder. Please refer to Using the engine block heater (if equipped) in the Driving chapter of your Owner’s Guide.
diesel engine OPera TiOn
(if equipped)Diesel Engines have different starting and operating procedures than gasoline engines. Please refer to your diesel supplement for detailed information on starting and operating your diesel engine. Key items to remember are:
Starting the Engine With the key in the ON position, the light will illuminate if glow plug heat is necessary as a starting aid. Wait for the light to extinguish before starting the engine.
Turning Off the Engine It is important to remember that if you have been operating your vehicle at a high speed or maximum gross vehicle weight, it is recommended to let the engine idle for 3-5 minutes so the turbocharged engine can properly cool down.
Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) Fuel The diesel engine requires ultra low sulfur diesel fuel to control exhaust emissions, especially when combined with an after treatment device such as a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). It is always important to make sure the proper fuel is used because use of improper fuel (i.e. high level of biodiesel fuel or a high sulfur diesel fuel) may cause serious engine damage. Use of biodiesel is acceptable as long as the content is no higher than 5% (B5). If the biodiesel is rated higher than B5 (such as B10 or B20), it may damage fuel system components.
Exhaust System To control exhaust emissions, your diesel Super Duty is equipped with an exhaust system with clean diesel after-treatment technology which includes
a diesel oxidation catalytic converter and a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Warning: Modification(s) to or removal of any exhaust system parts could result in elevated exhaust temperature which may cause vehicle or property damage or personal injury and may void your vehicle’s warranty.
Draining the Water Separator Remember to drain the water separator monthly. Water will gather in the frame-mounted water separator, called the horizontal fuel conditioning module (HFCM). A WATER IN FUEL indicator will illuminate in the message center when the module has reached its capacity.
Checking the Air Filter Your vehicle has an air filtration system with a restriction indicator gauge that will alert you when you need to
change your filter. The gauge has a viewable indicator
located underhood on the air filter assembly which should
be inspected every 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or at every
oil change. A CHECK AIR FILTER message will also appear
in the message center when the system restriction reaches
its upper limit for proper operation. Always use the underhood air filter restriction gauge to determine when the air filter element needs to be changed.

Use Motorcraft oil or an equivalent oil conforming to Ford specification WSS-M2C171–E or API service categories CJ-4 or CJ-4/SM. It is important to use these oils because they are compatible with the emission control equipment of your vehicle to meet the more stringent emission standards.
Under normal conditions, the engine oil and filter need to be changed at 10,000 miles or 6 month intervals (whichever comes first). Under severe conditions, the intervals are sooner; 5,000 miles or 3 months (whichever comes first). Refer to the scheduled maintenance information chapter of the diesel owner guide supplement for specific information on normal and severe conditions.Use the same engine oil and filter change intervals when using synthetic engine oil.
Heavier 15W-40 and 5W-40 engine oils are recommended for temperatures over 50˚F (10˚C) and must be used for heavy duty driving and trailer towing.

pressure. Using a digital display and
a few controls, trailer brake
adjustment can be performed and
monitored from inside the vehicle.
Your vehicle’s message center
interfaces with the TBC to alert you
to any concerns between the trailer
connection and your vehicle or the
TBC itself.
17. uPFiTTer
(auxiliary switched input box)
If your vehicle is equipped with
the Upfitter package, the four
auxiliary switches mounted on the
instrument panel can be
customized to perform additional
functions. The switches deliver 10A
or 30A of battery power to whatever
accessory is chosen. Refer to the

All vehicles are equipped with a
power point on the instrument panel;
SuperCab and Crew Cab models
have an additional power point on
the rear of the center console (if
equipped). A power point is designed
for accessory plugs only; do not
insert any other object as damage
may occur and blow the fuse.
19. a uxiliary inPuT jac K
(if equipped)
Your vehicle may be equipped with
an Auxiliary Input Jack (AIJ). The
Auxiliary Input Jack provides a way
to connect your portable music
player to the in-vehicle audio system.
This allows the audio from the
portable music player to be played
through the vehicle speakers with
high fidelity.

(if equipped)
If your vehicle is equipped with
power folding/power telescoping
mirrors, both
mirrors can
be folded
or unfolded
simultaneously
by using the power mirror switch
located on the driver’s door armrest.
Rotate the switch to the neutral
position and then pull the switch
rearward to pull the mirrors in.
Pull the switch rearward again to
return the mirrors
back to the normal
position. When
power folding the
trailer tow mirrors,
it is normal to
hear the sound
of the high
output motors.
The passenger
mirror will typically
complete folding
before the driver
mirror (this is
normal). If the
mirrors are manually
folded forward (pointing toward
the front of the vehicle), they
must be manually folded back
to the normal position for the
power fold feature to work.
Note: Power fold mirrors cannot
unfold while the vehicle is traveling
at highway speeds due to wind force
on the mirrors.
Both mirrors can be extended
simultaneously by using the
switch on the door trim panel.
To telescope the mirrors outward,
press and hold the left side of the
switch until they reach the desired
position. To retract the mirrors
inward, press and hold the right side
of the switch until the mirrors reach
the desired position. Please refer to
your Owner’s Guide for more details.
8. message cenTer
When the ignition is in the ON
position, the message center on
your vehicle’s instrument cluster will
display information on your vehicle’s
operating functions, as well as
warning messages. Pressing the INFO
button lets you scroll through general
vehicle information such as odometer,
trip odometer, compass, average fuel
economy, distance to empty (fuel) and
engine hours. Engine hours register
how many hours the engine has been
running. This is especially important if
your vehicle is equipped with a diesel
engine as important maintenance
items (engine oil changes and fuel
filter changes) may be based on
engine hours. Please refer to the
scheduled maintenance
information in your diesel
supplement for more information.

10. PO wer rear sliding wind Ow
Push the switch,
(located behind
the steering wheel)
to open the rear
window. Pull to
close the rear window. Please refer to
your Owner’s Guide for more details.
11. TO w/haul swiT ch
To eliminate excessive transmission
shifting, activate the Tow/Haul
feature. This will reduce frequency
of transmission shifting and assist
in transmission cooling. This feature
also provides engine braking in all
forward gears when the transmission
is in the D (Overdrive) position; the
engine braking will slow the vehicle
and assist the driver in controlling the
vehicle when descending a grade.
12. FOur- wheel driVe
(4wd) s ysTem
(if equipped)
The 4WD system indicator lights
illuminate only under the following
conditions. If these lights illuminate
when driving in 2WD, contact your
authorized dealer as soon as possible.
• 4x4 HIGH – momentarily

illuminates after the engine
is started. Illuminates when
4H (4x4 High) is engaged.
• 4x4 LOW – momentarily

illuminates when the ignition
is turned to the ON position.
Illuminates when 4L (4x4 Low)

is engaged.
2H/2WD – For general on-road
driving. Sends power to the rear
wheels only.
4H/4x4 High – For winter and off-road
conditions. Sends power to front
and rear wheels. This mode is not
intended for use on dry pavement.
N (Neutral) (MSOS only) – Only used
when towing the vehicle. The transfer
case neutral position overrides the
transmission and puts the vehicle in
neutral regardless of the transmission
gearshift lever position. The vehicle
can move forward or backwards.
4L/4x4 Low – For low-speed off-road
applications that require extra power
such as steep grades, deep sand or
pulling a boat out of the water. Sends
power to the front and rear wheels.
This mode is not intended for use on
dry pavement. Ideal Shift Conditions:
Slow to 2-3mph, keep your foot on
the brake and shift transmission to
NEUTRAL. Select 4Low ( Some noise
is normal during shift). Once the 4Low
light is illuminated shift transmission
back into gear.
13. TracTiOn c OnTrOl sys Tem
Helps you maintain the stability and
steerability of your vehicle, especially
on slippery road surfaces such as
snow or ice-covered roads. This
system will allow your vehicle to make
better use of available traction in
these conditions. Push the button to
disable the traction control system
when desired.
14. POwer adjus Table
FOOT Pedals
(if equipped)
The accelerator and brake pedals
can be adjusted toward or away from
you for enhanced driving comfort.
The adjustable pedal position can
also be recalled with the memory
feature (if equipped). Please refer to
your Owner’s Guide for more details.
15. reVerse sensing sys Tem
(if equipped)
Sounds a tone to warn the driver of
obstacles up to 6 feet (2 meters)
from the rear bumper when the
R (Reverse) gear is selected and
the vehicle is moving at speeds
less than 3 mph (5 km/h). Push
the button to disable the reverse
sensing system when desired.

Your vehicle may be equipped with

The Service engine soon indicator
light illuminates when the ignition
is first turned to the ON position to
check the bulb. Solid illumination
after the engine is started indicates
the On Board Diagnostics System
(OBD-II) has detected a malfunction.
Please refer to On board diagnostics
(OBD-II) in the Maintenance and
Specifications chapter of the Owner’s
Guide. If the light is blinking, engine
misfire is occurring which could
damage your catalytic converter.
Drive in a moderate fashion (avoid
heavy acceleration and
deceleration) and have your vehicle
serviced immediately.
2. abs w arning l amP
If the ABS light stays illuminated or
continues to flash, a malfunction
has been detected, have the system
serviced immediately. Normal braking
is still functional unless the brake
warning light is also illuminated.
3. airbag readiness l amP
If this light fails to illuminate when
ignition is turned to ON, continues to
flash or remains on, have the system
serviced immediately. A chime will
also sound when a malfunction in the
supplemental restraint system has
been detected.
4. braKe s ysTem w arning l amP
To confirm the brake system warning
light is functional, it will momentarily
illuminate when the ignition is turned
to the ON position, when the engine is
not running or in a position between
