If your vehicle has anti-lock brakes, applythe brakes steadily. Do not pump thebrakes.
Driving on Snow and Ice
WARNING
If you are driving in slipperyconditions that require tire chains orcables, then it is critical that you drivecautiously. Keep speeds down, allow forlonger stopping distances and avoidaggressive steering to reduce the chancesof a loss of vehicle control which can leadto serious injury or death. If the rear end ofyour vehicle slides while cornering, steer inthe direction of the slide until you regaincontrol of your vehicle.
Note:Excessive tire slippage can causetransmission damage.
Four-wheel drive vehicles have advantagesover two-wheel drive vehicles in snow andice but can skid like any other vehicle.Should you start to slide while driving onsnowy or icy roads, turn the steering wheelin the direction of the slide until you regaincontrol.
Avoid sudden applications of power andquick changes of direction on snow andice. Apply the accelerator slowly andsteadily when starting from a full stop.
Avoid sudden braking. Although afour-wheel drive vehicle may acceleratebetter than a two-wheel drive vehicle insnow and ice, it will not stop any faster asbraking occurs at all four wheels. Do notbecome overconfident as to roadconditions.
Make sure you allow sufficient distancebetween you and other vehicles forstopping. Drive slower than usual andconsider using one of the lower gears. Inemergency stopping situations, apply thebrake steadily. Do not pump the brakepedal. See Hints on Driving WithAnti-Lock Brakes (page 162).
If Your Vehicle Gets Stuck In Mud orSnow
WARNING
Do not spin the wheels at over 35mph (56 km/h). The tires may failand injure a passenger or bystander.
If your vehicle gets stuck in mud or snow,it may be rocked out by shifting betweenforward and reverse gears, stoppingbetween shifts in a steady pattern. Presslightly on the accelerator in each gear.
Note:Do not rock your vehicle if the engineis not at normal operating temperature,damage to the transmission may occur.
Note:Do not rock your vehicle for morethan a minute, damage to the transmissionand tires may occur or the engine mayoverheat.
Parking
WARNINGS
If the parking brake is fully released,but the brake warning lamp remainsilluminated, the brakes may not beworking properly. See your authorizeddealer.
Always set the parking brake fullyand make sure the gearshift islatched in P (Park). Turn the ignitionto the off position and remove the keywhenever you leave your vehicle.

On some Four-wheel drive vehicles, whenthe transfer case is in the N (Neutral)position, the engine and transmission aredisconnected from the rest of the driveline.Therefore, the vehicle is free to roll even ifthe automatic transmission is in P (Park)or the manual transmission is in gear. Donot leave the vehicle unattended with thetransfer case in the N (Neutral) position.Always set the parking brake fully and turnoff the ignition when leaving the vehicle.
Maintenance and Modifications
The suspension and steering systems onyour vehicle have been designed andtested to provide predictable performancewhether loaded or empty. For this reason,we strongly recommend that you do notmake modifications such as adding orremoving parts (i.e. lift kits or stabilizerbars) or by using replacement parts notequivalent to the original factoryequipment.
We recommend that you use caution whenyour vehicle has either a high load or device(i.e. ladder or luggage racks). Anymodifications to your vehicle that raise thecenter of gravity may cause your vehicleto roll over when there is a loss of vehiclecontrol.
Failure to maintain your vehicle correctlymay void the warranty, increase your repaircost, reduce vehicle performance andoperational capabilities and adverselyaffect you and your passenger's safety. Werecommend you frequently inspect yourvehicle's chassis components when yourvehicle is subject to off road usage.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Note:Occasional brake noise is normal. Ifa metal-to-metal, continuous grinding orcontinuous squeal sound is present, thebrake linings may be worn-out. Have thesystem checked by an authorized dealer. Ifyour vehicle has continuous vibration orshudder in the steering wheel while braking,have it checked by an authorized dealer.
Note:Brake dust may accumulate on thewheels, even under normal drivingconditions. Some dust is inevitable as thebrakes wear and does not contribute tobrake noise. See Cleaning the AlloyWheels (page 261).
See Warning Lamps andIndicators (page 77).
Wet brakes result in reduced brakingefficiency. Gently press the brake pedal afew times when driving from a car wash orstanding water to dry the brakes.
Brake Over Accelerator
In the event the accelerator pedalbecomes stuck or entrapped, apply steadyand firm pressure to the brake pedal toslow the vehicle and reduce engine power.If you experience this condition, apply thebrakes and bring your vehicle to a safestop. Move the transmission selector leverto position P, switch the engine off andapply the parking brake. Inspect theaccelerator pedal for any interference. Ifnone are found and the condition persists,have your vehicle towed to the nearestauthorized dealer.
Brake Assist
Brake assist detects when you brakerapidly by measuring the rate at which youpress the brake pedal. It providesmaximum braking efficiency as long as youpress the pedal, and can reduce stoppingdistances in critical situations.
Anti-lock Brake System
This system helps you maintain steeringcontrol during emergency stops by keepingthe brakes from locking.
This lamp momentarilyilluminates when you turn theignition on. If the light does notilluminate during start up, remains on orflashes, the system may be disabled. Havethe system checked by an authorizeddealer.
If the system is disabled, normalbraking is still effective. If thebrake warning lamp illuminateswhen you release the parking brake, havethe system checked by an authorizeddealer.
HINTS ON DRIVING WITH
ANTI-LOCK BRAKES
Note:When the system is operating, thebrake pedal will pulse and may travelfurther. Maintain pressure on the brakepedal. You may also hear a noise from thesystem. This is normal.
The anti-lock braking system will noteliminate the risks when:
•you drive too closely to the vehicle infront of you
•your vehicle is hydroplaning
•you take corners too fast
•the road surface is poor.

PARKING BRAKE
WARNING
Always set the parking brake fullyand make sure the transmissionselector lever is placed in position P.Failure to set the parking brake and engagepark could result in vehicle roll-away,property damage or bodily injury. Turn theignition to the lock position and removethe key whenever you leave your vehicle.
Apply the parking brake whenever yourvehicle is parked. Press the pedaldownward to set the parking brake. Thebrake warning lamp in the instrumentcluster will illuminate and remainsilluminated until the parking brake isreleased.
To release, pull the brake release leverlocated at the lower left side of theinstrument panel.
If you are parking your vehicle on a gradeor with a trailer, press and hold the brakepedal down, then set the parking brake.There may be a little vehicle movement asthe parking brake sets to hold the vehicle'sweight. This is normal and should be noreason for concern. If needed, press andhold the service brake pedal down, thentry reapplying the parking brake. Chock thewheels if required. If the parking brakecannot hold the weight of the vehicle, theparking brake may need to be serviced orthe vehicle may be overloaded.
HILL START ASSIST
WARNINGS
The system does not replace theparking brake. When you leave yourvehicle, always apply the parkingbrake and put the transmission in park (P).
WARNINGS
You must remain in your vehicle onceyou have activated the system.
During all times, you are responsiblefor controlling your vehicle,supervising the system andintervening, if required.
If the engine is revved excessively, orif a malfunction is detected, thesystem will be deactivated.
The system makes it easier to pull awaywhen your vehicle is on a slope without theneed to use the parking brake.
When the system is active, your vehicle willremain stationary on the slope for two tothree seconds after you release the brakepedal. This allows you time to move yourfoot from the brake to the acceleratorpedal. The brakes are releasedautomatically once the engine hasdeveloped sufficient drive to prevent yourvehicle from rolling down the slope. Thisis an advantage when pulling away on aslope, (for example from a car park ramp,traffic lights or when reversing uphill intoa parking space).
The system will activate automatically onany slope that will cause significant vehiclerollback.
Using Hill Start Assist
1.Press the brake pedal to bring yourvehicle to a complete standstill. Keepthe brake pedal pressed.
2.If the sensors detect that your vehicleis on a slope, the system will activateautomatically.
3.When you remove your foot from thebrake pedal, your vehicle will remainon the slope without rolling away forabout two or three seconds. This holdtime will automatically be extended ifyou are in the process of driving off.

PARKING AID (IF EQUIPPED)
WARNINGS
To help avoid personal injury, pleaseread and understand the limitationsof the system as contained in thissection. Sensing is only an aid for some(generally large and fixed) objects whenmoving in reverse on a flat surface atparking speeds. Traffic control systems,inclement weather, air brakes, and externalmotors and fans may also affect thefunction of the sensing system; this mayinclude reduced performance or a falseactivation.
To help avoid personal injury, alwaysuse caution when in R (Reverse) andwhen using the sensing system.
This system is not designed toprevent contact with small or movingobjects. The system is designed toprovide a warning to assist the driver indetecting large stationary objects to avoiddamaging the vehicle. The system may notdetect smaller objects, particularly thoseclose to the ground.
Certain add-on devices such as largetrailer hitches, bike or surfboard racksand any device that may block thenormal detection zone of the system, maycreate false beeps.
Note:Keep the sensors, located on thebumper or fascia, free from snow, ice andlarge accumulations of dirt. If the sensorsare covered, the system’s accuracy can beaffected. Do not clean the sensors withsharp objects.
Note:If your vehicle sustains damage tothe bumper or fascia, leaving it misalignedor bent, the sensing zone may be alteredcausing inaccurate measurement ofobstacles or false alarms.
Note:If your vehicle is equipped withMyKey™, it is possible to prevent turningthe sensing system off. See MyKey™ (page50).
Note:If your vehicle is equipped with a fullyintegrated electronic trailer brake controller(TBC) and a trailer with electric trailerbrakes is connected to your vehicle, the RSSwill be disabled. When the vehicle is shiftedinto reverse, the information display willremain in the Rear Park Aid Off selection.For more information on the TBC, SeeTrailer Sway Control (page 190).
The sensing system warns the driver ofobstacles within a certain range of thebumper area. The system turns onautomatically whenever the ignition isswitched on.
When receiving a detection warning, theradio volume is reduced to apredetermined level. After the warninggoes away, the radio volume returns to theprevious level.
Rear Sensing System
The rear sensors are only active when thetransmission is in R (Reverse). As thevehicle moves closer to the obstacle, therate of the audible warning increases.When the obstacle is fewer than 12 inches(30 centimeters) away, the warningsounds continuously. If a stationary orreceding object is detected farther than 12inches (30 centimeters) from the side ofthe vehicle, the tone sounds for only threeseconds. Once the system detects anobject approaching, the warning soundsagain.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
Cruise control lets you maintain a setspeed without keeping your foot on theaccelerator pedal. You can use cruisecontrol when your vehicle speed is greaterthan 20 mph (30 km/h).
USING CRUISE CONTROL
WARNINGS
Do not use cruise control in heavytraffic, on winding roads or when theroad surface is slippery. This couldresult in loss of vehicle control, seriousinjury or death.
When you are going downhill, yourvehicle speed may increase abovethe set speed. The system will notapply the brakes. Change down a gear toassist the system in maintaining the setspeed. Failure to do so could result in lossof vehicle control, serious injury or death.
Note:Cruise control will disengage if thevehicle speed decreases more than 10 mph(16 km/h) below your set speed whiledriving uphill.
The cruise controls are located on thesteering wheel.
Switching Cruise Control On
Press and release ON.
The indicator will appear in theinstrument cluster.
Setting a Speed
1.Accelerate to the desired speed.
2.Press and release SET+.
3.Take your foot off the acceleratorpedal.
The indicator will change colors in theinstrument cluster.
Changing the Set Speed
Note:If you accelerate by pressing theaccelerator pedal, the set speed will notchange. When you release the acceleratorpedal, you will return to the speed that youpreviously set.
•Press and hold SET+ or SET-. Releasethe control when you reach the desiredspeed.
•Press and release SET+ or SET-. Theset speed will change in approximately1 mph (2 km/h) increments.
•Press the accelerator or brake pedaluntil you reach the desired speed. Pressand release SET+.
Canceling the Set Speed
Press CNCL or tap the brake pedal. Youwill not erase the set speed.
Resuming the Set Speed
Press and release RSM.
Switching Cruise Control Off
Note:You will erase the set speed if youswitch the system off.
Press and release OFF or switch theignition off.

be: 635 kilograms - (2 x 99kilograms) - (12 x 45 kilograms) =635 - 198 - 540 = -103 kilograms.You will need to reduce the loadweight by at least 240 pounds(104 kilograms). If you removethree 100-pound (45-kilogram)cement bags, then the loadcalculation would be:1400 - (2 x220) - (9 x 100) = 1400 - 440 -900 = 60 pounds. Now you havethe load capacity to transport thecement and your friend home. Inmetric units, the calculation wouldbe: 635 kilograms - (2 x 99kilograms) - (9 x 45 kilograms) =635 - 198 - 405 = 32 kilograms.
The above calculations alsoassume that the loads arepositioned in your vehicle in amanner that does not overloadthe Front or the Rear Gross AxleWeight Rating specified for yourvehicle on the Safety ComplianceCertification Label. The label shallbe affixed to either the door hingepillar, door-latch post, or the dooredge that meets the door-latchpost, next to the driver's seatingposition.
Special Loading Instructionsfor Owners of Pick-up Trucksand Utility-type Vehicles
WARNING
Loaded vehicles may handledifferently than unloadedvehicles. Extra precautions, suchas slower speeds and increasedstopping distance, should betaken when driving a heavilyloaded vehicle.
Your vehicle can haul more cargoand people than most passengercars. Depending upon the typeand placement of the load,hauling cargo and people mayraise the center of gravity of thevehicle.
TAILGATE
Tailgate Lock
The tailgate lock can help prevent theft ofthe tailgate.
Insert the ignition key into the tailgate lock.Turn it to the right to lock the tailgate. Turnit to the left to unlock the tailgate.

You can adjust the amount ofinitial trailer brake output byselecting one of three settingsthrough the message center.
Ford has tested the trailer brakecontroller to be compatible withseveral major brands ofelectric-over-hydraulic trailerbrakes. Contact an authorizeddealer for information on whichbrands you can use.
The controller user interfaceconsists of the following:
A: + and - (Gain adjustmentbuttons): Pressing these buttonsadjusts the controller's poweroutput to the trailer brakes in 0.5increments. You can increase thegain setting to 10.0 (maximumtrailer braking) or decrease it to 0(no trailer braking). Pressing andholding a button raises or lowersthe setting continuously. The gainsetting displays in the messagecenter as follows: TBC GAIN =XX.X.
B: Manual control lever: Slide thecontrol lever to the left to switchon the trailer's electric brakesindependent of the tow vehicle's.See the following Procedure foradjusting gain section forinstructions on proper use of thisfeature. If you use the manualcontrol while the brake is alsoapplied, the greater of the twoinputs determines the power sentto the trailer brakes.
•Stop lamps: Using the manualcontrol lever lights both thetrailer brake lamps and yourvehicle brake lamps except thecenter high-mount stop lamp,if you make the properelectrical connection to thetrailer. Pressing your vehiclebrake pedal also lights bothtrailer and vehicle brake lamps.
The controller shows gain setting,output bar graph, and trailerconnectivity status in theinformation display. They appearin the information display asfollows:
•TBC GAIN = XX.X NOTRAILER: Shows the currentgain setting during a givenignition cycle and when
adjusting the gain. This alsodisplays if you use the manualcontrol lever or make gainadjustments with no trailerconnected.
•TBC GAIN = XX.XOUTPUT=/ / / / / /: Displayswhen you push your vehicle'sbrake pedal, or upon use of themanual control. Bar indicatorslight in the information displayto indicate the amount ofpower going to the trailerbrakes relative to the brakepedal or manual control input.One bar indicates the leastamount of output; six barsindicate maximum output.

•TRAILER CONNECTED:Displays when the systemsenses a correct trailer wiringconnection during a givenignition cycle.
•TRAILER DISCONNECTED:Displays, accompanied by asingle audible time, when thesystem senses a trailerconnection and then adisconnection, eitherintentional or unintentional,during a given ignition cycle. Italso displays if a truck ortrailer-wiring fault occurscausing the trailer to appeardisconnected. This messagecan also display if you use themanual control lever without atrailer connected.
Procedure for Adjusting Gain
Note:Only perform this procedurein a traffic-free environment atspeeds of approximately 20-25mph (30-40 km/h).
The gain setting sets the trailerbrake controller for the specifictowing condition. You shouldchange the setting as towingconditions change. Changes totowing conditions include trailerload, vehicle load, road conditionsand weather.
The gain should be set to providethe maximum trailer brakingassistance while making sure thetrailer wheels do not lock whenusing the brakes. Locked trailerwheels may lead to trailerinstability.
1.Make sure the trailer brakes arein good working condition,functioning normally andproperly adjusted. See yourtrailer dealer if necessary.
2.Hook up the trailer and makethe electrical connectionsaccording to the trailermanufacturer's instructions.
3.When you plug in a trailer withelectric orelectric-over-hydraulic brakes,TRAILER CONNECTEDappears in the informationdisplay.
4.Use the gain adjustment (+ and-) buttons to increase ordecrease the gain setting to thedesired starting point. A gainsetting of 6.0 is a good startingpoint for heavier loads.
5.In a traffic-free environment,tow the trailer on a dry, levelsurface at a speed of 20-25mph (30-40 km/h) andsqueeze the manual controllever completely.
6.If the trailer wheels lock up,indicated by squealing tires,reduce the gain setting. If thetrailer wheels turn freely,
increase the gain setting.Repeat Steps 5 and 6 until the

•When you switch the engineoff, the controller output isdisabled and the display andmodule shut down. Thecontroller module and displayturn on when you switch theignition on.
•The trailer brake controller isonly a factory-installed ordealer-installed item. Ford isnot responsible for warranty orperformance of the controllerdue to misuse or customerinstallation.
Trailer Lamps
WARNING
Never connect any trailerlamp wiring to the vehicle'stail lamp wiring; this may damagethe electrical system resulting infire. Contact your authorizeddealer as soon as possible forassistance in proper trailer towwiring installation. Additionalelectrical equipment may berequired.
Trailer lamps are required on mosttowed vehicles. Make sure allrunning lights, brake lights, turnsignals and hazard lights areworking.
Using a Step Bumper (IfEquipped)
The rear bumper is equipped withan integral hitch and only requiresa ball with a one-inch (25.4millimeter) shank diameter. Thebumper has a 5000-pound (2268kilogram) trailer weight and a500-pound (227 kilogram) tongueweight capacity
If it is necessary to relocate thehitch ball position, you must installa frame-mounted trailer hitch.
Before Towing a Trailer
Practice turning, stopping andbacking up to get the feel of yourvehicle-trailer combination beforestarting on a trip. When turning,
make wider turns so the trailerwheels clear curbs and otherobstacles.
When Towing a Trailer
•Do not drive faster than 70mph (113 km/h) during the first500 miles (800 kilometers).
•Do not make full-throttlestarts.
•Check your hitch, electricalconnections and trailer wheel
lug nuts thoroughly after youhave traveled 50 miles (80kilometers).
