Low-series vehicles (if equipped)
The front passenger airbag on and offswitch has an indicator that will illuminateand stay lit to remind you that the frontpassenger frontal airbag is off. Theindicator lamp is located by the radio.
Note:The indicator lamp will illuminate fora short period of time when the ignition isfirst turned on to confirm it is functional.
Turning the Passenger Airbag Off
WARNINGS
If the light fails to illuminate whenthe passenger air bag switch is offand the ignition is on, have thepassenger air bag switch serviced at yourauthorized dealer immediately.
In order to avoid inadvertentactivation of the switch, alwaysremove the ignition key from thepassenger air bag on and off switch.
WARNINGS
An infant in a rear-facing seat facesa high risk of serious or fatal injuriesfrom a deploying passenger airbag.Rear facing infant seats should never beplaced in the front seats, unless thepassenger airbag is turned off.
1.Insert the ignition key, turn the switchto OFF and hold in OFF while removingthe key.
2.When the ignition is turned on, the passairbag off light illuminates briefly,momentarily shuts off and then turnsback on. This indicates that thepassenger airbag is deactivated.
Turning the Passenger Airbag Back On
WARNINGS
The safety belts for the driver andright front passenger seatingpositions have been specificallydesigned to function together with theairbags in certain types of crashes. Whenyou turn off your airbag, you not only lose

The side airbags are located on theoutboard side of the seatbacks of the frontseats. In certain sideways crashes, theairbag on the side affected by the crashwill be inflated. The airbag was designedto inflate between the door panel andoccupant to further enhance the protectionprovided occupants in side impact crashes.
The system consists of the following:
•A label or embossed side panelindicating that side airbags are foundon your vehicle.
•Side airbags located inside theseatback of the driver and frontpassenger seats.
·Crash sensors and monitoringsystem with readiness indicator.See Crash Sensors and AirbagIndicator (page 44).
The design and development of the sideairbag system included recommendedtesting procedures that were developedby a group of automotive safety expertsknown as the Side Airbag TechnicalWorking Group. These recommendedtesting procedures help reduce the risk ofinjuries related to the deployment of sideairbags.
SAFETY CANOPY™
WARNINGS
Do not place objects or mountequipment on or near the headlinerat the siderail that may come intocontact with a deploying curtain airbag.Failure to follow these instructions mayincrease the risk of personal injury in theevent of a crash.
Do not lean your head on the door.The curtain airbag could injure youas it deploys from the headliner.
Do not attempt to service, repair, ormodify the curtain airbags, its fuses,the A, B, or C pillar trim, or theheadliner on a vehicle containing curtainairbags as you could be seriously injuredor killed. Contact your authorized dealeras soon as possible.
All occupants of your vehicleincluding the driver should alwayswear their safety belts even when anairbag supplemental restraint system andcurtain airbag is provided. Failure toproperly wear your safety belt couldseriously increase the risk of injury or death.
To reduce risk of injury, do notobstruct or place objects in thedeployment path of the curtainairbag.
If the curtain airbags have deployed,the curtain airbags will not functionagain. The curtain airbags (includingthe A, B and C pillar trim and headliner)must be inspected and serviced by anauthorized dealer. If the curtain airbag isnot replaced, the unrepaired area willincrease the risk of injury in a crash.

The restraints control module alsomonitors the readiness of the above safetydevices plus the crash and occupantsensors. The readiness of the safetysystem is indicated by a warning indicatorlight in the instrument cluster or by abackup tone if the warning light is notworking. See Instrument Cluster (page75). Routine maintenance of the airbag isnot required.
A difficulty with the system is indicated byone or more of the following:
The readiness light will notilluminate immediately after theignition is turned on.
•The readiness light will either flash orstay lit.
•A series of five beeps will be heard. Thetone pattern will repeat periodicallyuntil the problem, the light or both arerepaired.
If any of these things happen, evenintermittently, have the supplementalrestraint system serviced at an authorizeddealer immediately. Unless serviced, thesystem may not function properly in theevent of a crash.
The fact that the safety belt pretensionersor front airbags did not activate for bothfront seat occupants in a crash does notmean that something is wrong with thesystem. Rather, it means the restraintscontrol module determined the accidentconditions (crash severity, belt usage)were not appropriate to activate thesesafety devices.
•The design of the front airbags is toactivate only in frontal and near-frontalcrashes (not rollovers, side impacts orrear impacts) unless the crash causessufficient frontal deceleration.
•The design of the safety beltpretensioners is to activate in frontal,near-frontal and side crashes, and inrollovers.
•The design of the side airbags is toinflate in certain side impact crashes.Side airbags may activate in othertypes of crashes if the vehicleexperiences sufficient sideways motionor deformation.
•The design of the Safety Canopy is toinflate in certain side impact crashesor rollover events. The Safety Canopymay activate in other types of crashesif the vehicle experiences sufficientsideways motion or deformation, or acertain likelihood of rollover.
AIRBAG DISPOSAL
Contact your authorized dealer as soon aspossible. Airbags must be disposed of byqualified personnel.

Sounding a Panic Alarm
Note:The panic alarm will only operatewhen the ignition is off.
Press the button to activate thealarm. Press the button again orturn the ignition on to deactivateit.
Remote Start (If Equipped)
WARNING
To avoid exhaust fumes, do not useremote start if your vehicle is parkedindoors or areas that are not wellventilated.
Note:Do not use remote start if your vehicleis low on fuel.
The remote start button is on thetransmitter.
This feature allows you to start yourvehicle from outside the vehicle. Thetransmitter has an extended operatingrange.
Vehicles with automatic climate controlcan be set to operate when you remotestart the vehicle. See Climate Control(page 103). A manual climate controlsystem will run at the setting it was set towhen you switch the vehicle off.
Many states and provinces haverestrictions for the use of remote start.Check your local and state or provinciallaws for specific requirements regardingremote start systems.
The remote start system will not work if:
•the ignition is on
•the alarm system is triggered
•you disable the feature
•the hood is open
•the transmission is not in P
•the vehicle battery voltage is too low
•the service engine soon indicator is on.
Remote Starting the Vehicle
Note:You must press each button withinthree seconds of each other. Your vehiclewill not remote start and the horn will notsound if you do not follow this sequence.
The label on your transmitter details thestarting procedure.
To remote start your vehicle:
1.Press the lock button to lock all thedoors.
2.Press the remote start button twice.The exterior lamps will flash twice.
The horn will sound if the system fails tostart.
Note:If you remote start your vehicle withan integrated keyhead transmitter, you mustswitch the ignition on before driving yourvehicle. If you remote start your vehicle withan intelligent access transmitter, you mustpress the START/STOP button on theinstrument panel once while applying thebrake pedal before driving your vehicle.
The power windows will not work duringthe remote start and the radio will not turnon automatically.
The parking lamps will remain on and thevehicle will run for 5, 10, or 15 minutes,depending on the setting.

Engine Oil Pressure Gauge
Indicates engine oil pressure. The needleshould stay in the normal operating range(between L and H). If the needle fallsbelow the normal range, stop the vehicle,turn off the engine and check the engineoil level. Add oil if needed. If the oil level iscorrect, have your vehicle checked by yourauthorized dealer.
Engine Coolant TemperatureGauge
WARNING
Never remove the coolant reservoircap while the engine is running or hot.
Indicates engine coolant temperature. Atnormal operating temperature, the levelindicator will be in the normal range. If theengine coolant temperature exceeds thenormal range, stop the vehicle as soon assafely possible, switch off the engine andlet the engine cool.
Transmission Fluid TemperatureGauge
Indicates transmission fluid temperature.At normal operating temperature, the levelindicator will be in the normal range. If thetransmission fluid temperature exceedsthe normal range, stop the vehicle as soonas safely possible and verify the airflow isnot restricted such as snow or debrisblocking airflow through the grill. Also,higher than normal operating temperaturecan be caused by special operationconditions (i.e. snowplowing, towing oroff-road use). Refer to Special operatingconditions in the scheduled maintenanceinformation for instructions. Operating the
transmission for extended periods of timewith the gauge in the higher than normalarea may cause internal transmissiondamage. Altering the severity of the drivingconditions is recommended to lower thetransmission temperature into the normalrange. If the gauge continues to show hightemperatures, see your authorized dealer.
Fuel Gauge
Note:The fuel gauge may vary slightlywhen your vehicle is moving or on a gradient.
Switch the ignition on. The fuel gauge willindicate approximately how much fuel isleft in the fuel tank. The arrow adjacent tothe fuel pump symbol indicates on whichside of your vehicle the fuel filler door islocated.
The needle should move toward F whenyou refuel your vehicle. If the needle pointsto E after adding fuel, this indicates yourvehicle needs service soon.
After refueling some variability in needleposition is normal:
•It may take a short time for the needleto reach F after leaving the gas station.This is normal and depends upon theslope of pavement at the gas station.
•The fuel amount dispensed into thetank is a little less or more than thegauge indicated. This is normal anddepends upon the slope of pavementat the gas station.
•If the gas station nozzle shuts offbefore the tank is full, try a differentgas pump nozzle.
Low Fuel Reminder
A low fuel reminder triggers when the fuelgauge needle is at 1/16th.

WARNING
Driving your vehicle with the warninglamp on is dangerous. A significantdecrease in braking performancemay occur. It will take you longer to stopyour vehicle. Have your vehicle checked byyour authorized dealer immediately. Drivingextended distances with the parking brakeengaged can cause brake failure and therisk of personal injury.
Check Fuel Cap (If Equipped)
Illuminates when the fuel capmay not be properly installed.Continued driving with this lighton may cause the Service enginesoon warning indicator to come on.
Cruise Control (If Equipped)
Illuminates when you switch thisfeature on. See Using CruiseControl (page 176).
Direction Indicator
Illuminates when the left or rightturn signal or the hazard warningflasher is turned on. If theindicators stay on or flash faster, check fora burned out bulb.
Door Ajar
Displays when the ignition is onand any door is not completelyclosed.
Electronic Locking Differential
Illuminates when using theelectronic locking differential.
Engine Coolant Temperature
Illuminates when the enginecoolant temperature is high.Stop the vehicle as soon aspossible, switch off the engine and let cool.
Engine Oil
If it illuminates with the enginerunning or when you are driving,this indicates a malfunction.Stop your vehicle as soon as it is safe todo so and switch the engine off. Check theengine oil level. See Engine Oil Check(page 235).
Note:Do not resume your journey if itilluminates despite the level being correct.Have the system checked by your authorizeddealer immediately.
Fasten Safety Belt
It will illuminate and a chime willsound to remind you to fastenyour safety belt.
Front Airbag
If it fails to illuminate when youstart your vehicle, continues toflash or remains on, it indicatesa malfunction. Have the system checkedby your authorized dealer.
High Beam
Illuminates when you switch thehigh beam headlamps on. It willflash when you use theheadlamp flasher.
Hill Descent (If Equipped)
Illuminates when hill descent isswitched on.

Low Fuel Level
Illuminates when the fuel levelis low or the fuel tank is nearlyempty. Refuel as soon aspossible.
Low Tire Pressure Warning
Illuminates when your tirepressure is low. If the lampremains on with the enginerunning or when driving, checkyour tire pressure as soon as possible.
It will also illuminate momentarily whenyou switch the ignition on to confirm thelamp is functional. If it does not illuminatewhen you switch the ignition on, or beginsto flash at any time, have the systemchecked by your authorized dealer.
Powertrain Malfunction/ReducedPower/Electronic Throttle Control
Illuminates when a powertrainor an AWD fault has beendetected. Contact yourauthorized dealer as soon as possible.
Service Engine Soon
If the service engine soonindicator light stays illuminatedafter the engine is started, itindicates that the On-Board Diagnostics(OBD-II) system has detected amalfunction of the vehicle emissionscontrol system. Refer to On-BoardDiagnostics (OBD-II) in the Fuel andRefueling chapter for more informationabout having your vehicle serviced. SeeEmission Control System (page 141).
If the light is blinking, engine misfire isoccurring which could damage yourcatalytic converter. Drive in a moderatefashion (avoid heavy acceleration anddeceleration) and have your vehicleserviced immediately.
Note:Under engine misfire conditions,excessive exhaust temperatures coulddamage the catalytic converter or othervehicle components.
The service engine soon indicator lightilluminates when the ignition is first turnedon prior to engine start to check the bulband to indicate whether the vehicle is readyfor Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) testing.
Normally, the service engine soon light willstay on until the engine is cranked, thenturn itself off if no malfunctions arepresent. However, if after 15 seconds theservice engine soon light blinks eight times,it means that the vehicle is not ready forI/M testing. See Emission ControlSystem (page 141).
Stability Control
Illuminates when the system isactive. If it remains illuminatedor does not illuminate when youswitch the ignition on, this indicates amalfunction. During a malfunction thesystem will switch off. Have the systemchecked by your authorized dealerimmediately. See Using StabilityControl (page 167).
Stability Control Off
Illuminates when you switch thesystem off. It will go out whenyou switch the system back onor when you switch the ignition off. SeeUsing Stability Control (page 167).

Transmission Tow/Haul (If Equipped)
Illuminates when the tow/haulfeature has been activated. If thelight flashes steadily, have thesystem serviced immediately, damage tothe transmission could occur.
4X2 (If Equipped)
Illuminates momentarily whentwo-wheel drive high is selected.If the light fails to display whenthe ignition is turned on, or remains on,have the system serviced immediately byyour authorized dealer.
4X4 LOW (If Equipped)
Illuminates when four-wheeldrive low is engaged. If the lightfails to display when the ignitionis turned on, or remains on, have thesystem serviced immediately by yourauthorized dealer.
4X4 HIGH (If Equipped)
Illuminates when four-wheeldrive high is engaged. If the lightfails to display when the ignitionis turned on, or remains on, have thesystem serviced immediately by yourauthorized dealer.
Diesel Warning Lights
If your vehicle is equipped with a dieselengine, it has some unique warning lights;refer to your diesel supplement for detailedinformation on their function.

Headlamps On Warning Chime
Sounds when you remove the key from theignition and open the driver's door and youhave left the headlamps or parking lampson.
Key in Ignition Warning Chime
Sounds when you open the driver's doorand you have left the key in the ignitionwith it in the off or accessory position.
Parking Brake On Warning Chime
Sounds when you have left the parkingbrake on and drive your vehicle. If thewarning chime remains on after you havereleased the parking brake, have thesystem checked by your authorized dealerimmediately.

Compass/Transmission indicatordisplay (if equipped)
The compass heading will display in theupper right corner of the informationdisplay; the transmission gear indicatordisplays in the right side of the informationdisplay when using the SelectShiftAutomatic™ transmission feature. Thesedisplays will not be shown in all screenmodes. For example: when programmingcertain vehicle features or in certaininformation menus.
INFORMATION MESSAGES
Note:Depending on your vehicle optionsand instrument cluster type, not all of themessages will display or be available.Additionally, the information display mayabbreviate or shorten certain messages.
Press the RESET button for Type 1 displaysor the OK button for Type 2 displays toacknowledge and remove some messagesfrom the information display. Theinformation display will automaticallyremove other messages after a short time.
You need to confirm certain messagesbefore you can access the menus.

We recommend regular unleaded gasolinewith a pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87.Some stations offer fuels posted as regularwith an octane rating below 87, particularlyin high altitude areas. We do notrecommend fuels with an octane ratingbelow 87.
Do not be concerned if your enginesometimes knocks lightly. However, if itknocks heavily under most drivingconditions while you are using fuel with therecommended octane rating, see yourauthorized dealer to prevent any enginedamage.
RUNNING OUT OF FUEL
Avoid running out of fuel because thissituation may have an adverse effect onpowertrain components.
If you have run out of fuel:
•You may need to cycle the ignition fromoff to on several times after refuelingto allow the fuel system to pump thefuel from the tank to the engine. Onrestarting, cranking time will take a fewseconds longer than normal. Withkeyless ignition, just start the engine.Crank time will be longer than usual.
•Normally, adding 1 gallon (3.8 liters) offuel is enough to restart the engine. Ifthe vehicle is out of fuel and on a steepgrade, more than 1 gallon (3.8 liters)may be required.
•The service engine soon indicator maycome on. For more information on theservice engine soon indicator, SeeWarning Lamps and Indicators(page 77).
Refilling With a Portable FuelContainer
WARNINGS
The fuel system may be underpressure. If the fuel filler cap isventing vapor or if you hear a hissingsound, wait until it stops before completelyremoving the fuel filler cap. Otherwise, fuelmay spray out and cause personal injury.
Do not try to pry open or push openthe fuel system with foreign objects.This could damage the fuel systemand its seal and cause personal injury toyou or others.
Use the following directions when fillingfrom a portable fuel container:
1.Remove the fuel cap from the fuel fillerpipe by rotating it counter clockwise.
2.Slowly insert the portable fuelcontainer into the fuel filler opening.
3.Fill the vehicle with fuel from theportable fuel container.
4.4. When done, remove the portablefuel container nozzle and reinstall fuelcap. Insert fuel cap into fuel filleropening and turn clockwise until a clickis heard.
REFUELING
WARNINGS
Fuel vapor burns violently and a fuelfire can cause severe injuries.
Read and follow all the instructionson the pump island.
Turn off your engine when you arerefueling.
Do not smoke if you are near fuel orrefueling your vehicle.
