•If a large obstacle such as a rockcannot be avoided, choose a path thatplaces the rock directly under the tirerather than the undercarriage of thevehicle. This will help prevent damageto the vehicle.
•Ditches and washouts should becrossed at a 45° angle, allowing eachwheel to independently cross theobstacle.
Hill Climbing
WARNING: Extreme care shouldbe used when steering the vehicle inreverse down a slope so as not to causethe vehicle to swerve out of control.
•Always attempt to climb a steep hillalong the fall line of the slope and notdiagonally.
•If the vehicle is unable to make it upthe hill, DO NOT attempt to turn backdown the slope. Place the vehicle inlow range and slowly back down inreverse.
•When descending a steep slope, selectlow gear and engage hill descentcontrol. Use the throttle and brakepedals to control your descent speed.
Note:Hill descent control is functional inreverse and should be used in this situation.
DRIVING THROUGH WATERLIMITATIONS
WARNING: Do not attempt tocross a deep, fast flowing body of water.Failure to follow this instruction couldresult in the loss of control of yourvehicle, personal injury or death.
Determine the depth and speed of thecurrent before attempting a water crossing.As the water depth increases, reduce yourvehicle speed to avoid potential vehicledamage.
The key to a safe crossing is the waterdepth, current and bottom of the water'scondition. On soft bottoms, the vehiclesinks in, effectively increasing the waterlevel on the vehicle. Make sure to considerthis when determining the depth of water.Be aware that obstacles and debris maybe beneath the water’s surface.
Note:Cross flowing water at an angleheading slightly upstream.
Note:Tread lightly and avoid damage tothe environment.
Drive slowly when crossing water. Startvery slowly when entering, then buildmomentum. Proceed with a constant slowspeed lightly pressing on the accelerator.Ease off the accelerator as you reach theother side to diminish the front wave. Applythe accelerator slowly and as necessaryto climb out of the other side.
Note:Do not try to accelerate through thewater crossing.
When driving too fast in water or throughdeep water, the engine, transmission,transfer case, axles, electrical componentsor vehicle interior could ingest water.Muddy waters can reduce the coolingsystem effectiveness by depositing debrisinto the radiator. Water can causepermanent damage that may not becovered by your vehicle warranty. Seebelow for your vehicle’s capabilities.

Mud
Be cautious of sudden changes in vehiclespeed or direction when you are driving inmud. Even all-wheel drive and four-wheeldrive vehicles can lose traction in mud. Ifyour vehicle slides, steer in the direction ofthe slide until you regain control of yourvehicle. After driving through mud, cleanoff residue stuck to rotating driveshaftsand tires. Excess residue can cause animbalance that could damage drivecomponents.
Water
If you must drive though deep water, driveslowly. The water could limit traction orbrake capability. See Driving ThroughWater Limitations (page 413).
FLOOR MATS
WARNING: Use a floor matdesigned to fit the footwell of yourvehicle that does not obstruct the pedalarea. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in the loss of control of yourvehicle, personal injury or death.
WARNING: Pedals that cannotmove freely can cause loss of vehiclecontrol and increase the risk of seriouspersonal injury.
WARNING: Secure the floor matto both retention devices so that itcannot slip out of position and interferewith the pedals. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in the loss ofcontrol of your vehicle, personal injury ordeath.
WARNING: Do not place additionalfloor mats or any other covering on topof the original floor mats. This couldresult in the floor mat interfering with theoperation of the pedals. Failure to followthis instruction could result in the loss ofcontrol of your vehicle, personal injury ordeath.
WARNING: Always make sure thatobjects cannot fall into the driver footwell while your vehicle is moving. Objectsthat are loose can become trappedunder the pedals causing a loss ofvehicle control.
To install floor mats that have eyelets,position the floor mat eyelet over theretention post and press down to lock inposition. Repeat for all eyelets on the floormat.
To remove the floor mats, reverse theinstallation procedure.
Note:Regularly check the floor mats tomake sure they are secure.

Vehicles Sold in the United States:Getting Roadside Assistance
If you have a vehicle concern, Ford MotorCompany offers a complimentary roadsideassistance program. This program isseparate from the New Vehicle LimitedWarranty.
The service is available:
•24 hours a day, seven days a week.
•For the coverage period supplied withyour vehicle.
Roadside Assistance covers:
•A flat tire change with a good spare(except vehicles supplied with a tireinflation kit).
•Battery jump start.
•Lock-out assistance (key replacementcost is the customer's responsibility).
•Fuel delivery — independent servicecontractors, if not prohibited by state,local or municipal law, shall deliver upto 2 gal (8 L) of gasoline or 5 gal (20 L)of diesel fuel to a disabled vehicle.Roadside assistance limits fuel deliveryservice to two no-charge occurrenceswithin a 12-month period.
•Winch out — available within 100 ft(30 m) of a paved or countymaintained road, no recoveries.
•Towing — independent servicecontractors, if not prohibited by state,local or municipal law, shall tow Fordeligible vehicles to an authorized dealerwithin 50 mi (80 km) of thedisablement location or to the nearestauthorized dealer. If a memberrequests a tow to an authorized dealerthat is more than 50 mi (80 km) fromthe disablement location, the membershall be responsible for any mileagecosts in excess of 50 mi (80 km).
•Roadside Assistance includes up to$200 for a towed trailer if the disabledeligible vehicle requires service at thenearest authorized dealer. If the towingvehicle is operational but the trailer isnot, then the trailer does not qualify forany roadside services.

WARNING: Never link two strapstogether with a clevis pin. These heavymetal objects could become projectilesif the strap breaks and can cause seriousinjury or death.
WARNING: Switch the ignition offbefore removing the recovery hook.Failure to do so could result in personalinjury.
WARNING: The recovery hook canbecome hot. Let the recovery hook cooldown before removing it. Failure to doso could result in personal injury.
Your vehicle has frame-mounted frontrecovery hooks.
Note:Do not apply a load to the recoveryhooks that is greater than the gross vehicleweight rating of your vehicle.
Before using recovery hooks:
•Make sure all attaching points aresecure and capable of withstandingthe applied load.
•Do not use chains, cables or tow strapswith metal hook ends.
•Only use recovery straps that have aminimum breaking strength two tothree times the gross vehicle weight ofthe stuck vehicle.
•Make sure the recovery strap is in goodcondition and free of visible cuts, tearsor damage.
•Use a damper device such as a tarp,heavy blanket or piece of carpet, andplace it over the recovery strap to helpabsorb the energy in the event thestrap breaks.
•Make sure the stuck vehicle is notloaded heavier than its gross vehicleweight rating specified on thecertification label.
•Align the tow vehicle and stuck vehiclein a straight line, within 10 degrees.
•Keep bystanders to the sides of thevehicle, at a distance of at least twicethe length of the recovery strap. Thishelps avoid injury from the hazard of arecovery hook or strap breaking, or avehicle lurching into their path.
TRANSPORTING THE VEHICLE
If you need to tow your vehicle, contact aprofessional towing service or yourroadside assistance service provider.
Your manufacturer produces a towingmanual for all authorized tow truckoperators. Have your tow truck operatorrefer to this manual for proper hook-upand towing procedures.

TOWING YOUR VEHICLE
PRECAUTIONS
Use the following guidelines when towingyour vehicle. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in vehicle damagenot covered by the vehicle warranty.
Note:Make sure you properly secure yourvehicle to the tow vehicle.
Note:If you are unsure of the vehicle’sconfiguration, contact an authorized dealer.
RECREATIONALLY TOWING
YOUR VEHICLE - 4X4
WARNING: Do not disconnect thebattery when recreationally towing yourvehicle. This prevents the transfer casefrom shifting properly and could causethe vehicle to roll, even if thetransmission is in park (P).
WARNING: Placing the transfercase in its neutral position could causeyour vehicle to freely roll. Make sure youpress and hold the brake pedal and thevehicle is in a secure, safe position whenyou place the transfer case in its neutralposition.
Follow these guidelines if you have a needfor recreational towing. An example ofrecreational towing would be towing yourvehicle behind a motorhome. Theseguidelines are to make sure that you donot damage the transmission.
You can only tow your vehicle with allwheels on the ground by placing thetransfer case in its neutral position andengaging the recreational tow feature.Perform the following steps afterpositioning your vehicle behind the towvehicle and properly securing themtogether.
Note:Put your climate control system inrecirculated air mode to prevent exhaustfumes from entering your vehicle.
Note:Failure to put the transfer case in itsneutral position can damage vehiclecomponents.
Note: You can check the towing status atany time by opening the driver door orturning the ignition to the accessory or onposition.Neutral Tow Enabled LeaveTransmission in Neutral appears in theinstrument cluster display to confirm youcan recreationally tow your vehicle.
Note:If your vehicle has an anti-theftalarm, make sure you switch perimetersensing on when towing. See Setting theAlarm Security Level (page 104).
Switching Neutral Tow On
1.Place your vehicle in accessory modeby pressing the push button ignitionswitch once without pressing the brakepedal or by turning the ignition key tothe on position.
2.Press and hold the brake pedal.
3.Press the 2H button on the four-wheeldrive mode control.
4.Shift the transmission into neutral (N).
5.Using the instrument cluster controlson the steering wheel, select Settings.
6.Select Neutral Tow.
7.Press and hold the OK button until aconfirmation message appears in theinformation display.

Note: If completed successfully, theinformation display shows Neutral TowEnabled Leave Transmission in Neutral.This indicates that your vehicle is safe totow with all wheels on the ground.
Note:If you do not see a confirmationmessage in the instrument cluster display,you must perform the procedure again fromthe beginning.
Note:You may hear noise as the transfercase shifts into its neutral position. This isnormal.
8.Release the brake pedal and leave thetransmission in neutral (N) and switchyour vehicle off by pressing the pushbutton ignition switch once withoutpressing the brake pedal or turning thekey as far toward the off position.
Note:Vehicles with keys do not turn to theoff position when the transmission is inneutral (N). You must leave the key in theignition when towing. Use the keyless entrykeypad or an extra set of keys to lock andunlock your vehicle.
Switching Neutral Tow Off
1.With your vehicle properly secured tothe tow vehicle, place your vehicle inaccessory mode by pressing the pushbutton ignition switch once withoutpressing the brake pedal or by turningthe ignition key to the on position.
2.Press and hold the brake pedal.
3.Shift the transmission to Park (P) andcontinue holding the brake pedal untilthe instrument cluster display shows2H and Neutral Tow Disabled.
4.Release the brake pedal.
Note:If completed successfully, theinstrument cluster displays 2H and NeutralTow Disabled.
Note:You must perform the switchingneutral tow on and switching neutral towoff procedures again from the beginning ifthe indicator light and message do notdisplay.
Note:You may hear a noise as the transfercase shifts out of its neutral position. Thisis normal.
5.Apply the parking brake, thendisconnect your vehicle from the towvehicle.
6.Release the parking brake, start theengine, and shift into drive (D) to makesure the transfer case is out of theneutral tow position.
7.If the transfer case does notsuccessfully shift out of its neutralposition, set the parking brake. Haveyour vehicle checked as soon aspossible.
Resolving the Shift Delayed PullForward Message
1.Press and hold the brake pedal.
2.Start your vehicle.
3.Shift into neutral (N).
4.With the vehicle running, shift into drive(D) and let the vehicle roll forward upto 3 ft (1 m).
Note:You may hear a noise as the transfercase shifts out of its neutral position. Thisis normal.
5.Make sure the instrument clusterdisplays Neutral Tow Disabled.

Change the air filter element at the correctservice interval. See ScheduledMaintenance (page 591). Your vehicle maybe equipped with electronic engine air filtermaintenance minder, that providesoptimized service intervals and remindersbased on driving habits and environmentalconditions.
1.Clean any loose dirt or debris aroundthe air filter hosing.
2.Disconnect the mass air flow sensorelectrical connector, if required.
3.Remove the clips (x3) that secure theair filter housing cover. Remove the airfilter housing cover. Disconnect andpull the air intake tube away, asneeded.
4.Remove the air filter element from theair filter housing.
5.Inspect the air filter element for anydamage. Replace the air filter elementif the seal, paper, foam or steel meshhas any holes, cut or gouges.
6.Inspect the air filter housing for dirt,dust, snow, ice or debris in the aircleaner tray.
7.To install, reverse the removalprocedure. You can oscillate thehousing cover slightly left to right toassist with installation as needed, untilpositioned such that all three clips canbe re-engaged.
After operating your vehicle during heavysnowfall or extreme rain, do the following:
•Snow: At the earliest opportunity, openthe hood, clear any snow and ice fromthe air filter housing inlet.
•Extreme rain: The air filter elementdries out after approximately 15–30minutes of driving at highway speeds.
Note:Do not remove the foam block fromthe air cleaner tray.
RESETTING THE AIR FILTERREMINDER
1.Press the menu button on the steeringwheel to enter the instrument clusterdisplay main menu.
2.Select Vehicle Maintenance.
3.Select Engine Air Filter.
4.Press and hold the OK button until thesystem reset confirmation appears.
Note:The system displays 100% afterbeing successfully reset.

If you disconnect or replace the batteryand your vehicle has an automatictransmission, it must relearn its adaptivestrategy. Because of this, the transmissionmay shift firmly when first driven. This isnormal operation while the transmissionfully updates its operation to optimumshift feel.
Removing the Battery
1.Apply the parking brake and switch theignition off.
2.Switch all electrical equipment off, forexample lights and radio.
3.Wait a minimum of two minutes beforedisconnecting the battery.
Note:The engine management system hasa power hold function and remains poweredfor a period of time after you switch theignition off. This is to allow diagnostic andadaptive tables to be stored. Disconnectingthe battery without waiting can causedamage not covered by the vehicleWarranty.
4.Disconnect and isolate the negativebattery cable terminal.
5.Disconnect and isolate the positivebattery cable terminal.
6.Remove the battery securing clamp.
7.Remove the battery.
If you disconnect or replace the vehiclebattery, you must reset the followingfeatures:
•Window bounce-back. See WindowBounce-Back (page 129).
•Clock Settings.
•Pre-set radio stations.
Replacing the Battery
Note:Before reconnecting the battery,make sure the ignition remains switched off.
You must replace the battery with one ofexactly the same specification.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
Note:Make sure that you correctly installthe battery terminal covers, battery coverand battery cable terminals.
RESETTING THE BATTERYSENSOR
When you install a new battery, reset thebattery sensor by doing the following:
1.Switch the ignition on, and leave theengine off.
Note:Complete Steps 2 and 3 within 10seconds.
2.Flash the high beam headlamps fivetimes, ending with the high beams off.
3.Press and release the brake pedal threetimes.
The battery warning lamp flashes threetimes to confirm that the reset issuccessful.
RECYCLING AND DISPOSING OFTHE 12V BATTERY
Make sure that you dispose ofold batteries in anenvironmentally friendly way.Seek advice from your local authorityabout recycling old batteries.
