Speedometer and Odometer
Your speedometer lets
you see your speed
in
both miles per hour
(mph)
and kilometers
per hour (km/h).
Your
odometer shows how
far your vehicle has
been
driven, in either
miles (used
in the
U.S.) or kilometers
(used
in Canada).
Tamper-Resistant Odometer
Your odometer is tamper-resistant. The odometer will show silver lines
between the numbers
if someone tries to turn it back.
You may wonder what happens if your vehicle needs a new odometer
installed. Laws vary as to the procedure that must be followed,
so check
with your state or provincial vehicle registration office. But generally, if the
new odometer can be set to the mileage
total of the old odometer, then it
must be. But if it can't, then it's set at zero, and a label must be put on the
driver's door
to show the old mileage reading when the new odometer was
installed.
Trip Odometer
The trip odometer can
tell you how far your
vehicle has been
driven since you
last
set the trip odometer
to zero.
To reset the trip odometer, fully press the reset button located near the trip
odometer readout.
If the reset button is not fully pressed, the trip odometer
may not
go all the way back to zero. If it doesn't, you may have to press the
reset button again
to reset the readout to zero.

You should keep a record with all parts receipts and list the mileage and the
date
of any service work you perform. See “Maintenance Record” in the
Index.
A CAUTION:
You can be injured if you try to do service work on a vehicle
without knowing enough about it,
Be sure you have sufficient knowledge, experience, and the
proper replacement parts and tools before you attempt
any
vehicle maintenance task.
Be sure to use the proper nuts, bolts and other fasteners,
“English” and “metric” fasteners can be easily confused. If
you use the wrong fasteners, parts can later break or fall
off.
You could be hurt.
NOTICE:
If you try to do your own service work without knowing enough
about it, your vehicle could be damaged.
Fuel (Gasoline Engine)
If your vehicle has a diesel engine, see “Diesel Fuel Requirements and Fuel
System”
in this Section. For vehicles with gasoline engines, please read this.
Use regular unleaded gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher. It should meet
specifications ASTM D48
14 in the United States and CGSB 3.5-92 in
Canada. These fuels should have the proper additives, so you should not
have to add anything
to the fuel.
In the United States and Canada, it’s easy to be sure
you get the right kind
of gasoline (unleaded). You’ll see UNLEADED right on the pump. And
only unleaded nozzles will
fit into your vehicle’s filler neck.
Be sure the posted octane is at least
87. If the octane is less than 87, you
may get a heavy knocking noise when you drive. If it’s bad enough,
it can
damage your engine.
If you’re using fuel rated at 87 octane or higher and you still hear heavy
knocking, your engine needs service. But don’t worry
if you hear a little
pinging noise when you’re accelerating or driving up a hill. That’s normal
and you don’t have to buy a higher octane fuel to get rid
of pinging. It’s the
heavy, constant knock that means you have a problem.
