Theft-Deterrent Systems
Vehicle theft is big business, especially in some cities.
Although your vehicle has a number of theft-deterrent
features, we know that nothing we put on it can make it
impossible
to steal.
Content Theft-Deterrent
Your vehicle is equipped with a content theft-deterrent
alarm system.
With this system, the
security light in the instrument panel cluster
will flash as you open
the door
if your ignition
is
off.
This light reminds you to activate the theft-deterrent
system. Here’s how
to do it:
1. Open the door.
2. Lock the door with the power door lock switch or
the remote keyless entry transmitter. The security
light should come
on and stay on.
3. Close all doors. The security light should go off
after about 30 seconds. The alarm is not armed
until the security light goes
off.
If a locked door is opened without the key or the remote
keyless entry transmitter, the alarm will
go off. The
headlamps and parking lamps will flash for
two minutes,
and the horn will sound for
30 seconds, then will turn
off to save the battery power. You can choose different
feedback options for the alarm. See Driver lnformation
Center
(DIC) on page 3-43.
Remember, the theft-deterrent system won’t activate if
you lock the doors with a key or use the manual
door lock.
It activates only if you use a power door lock
switch with the door open, or with the remote keyless
entry transmitter. You should also remember that
you can start your vehicle with the correct ignition key
if
the alarm has been set off.
Here’s how to avoid setting off the alarm by accident:
If you don’t want to activate the theft-deterrent
system, the vehicle should be locked with the door
key after the doors are closed.
Always unlock a door with a key, or use the remote
keyless entry transmitter. Unlocking a door any
other way will set
off the alarm.
If you set
off the alarm by accident, unlock any door with
the key. You can also turn
off the alarm by pressing
unlock on the remote keyless entry transmitter. The alarm
won’t stop
if you try to unlock a door any other way.

Automatic Transmission Operation
Your vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission
and features an electronic shift position indicator
located within the instrument panel cluster.
There are several different positions for your shift lever.
PARK
(P): This position locks your drive wheels. It’s
the best position to use when you start your engine
because your -1icle
c ’t move easily.
It is aangerous to get out of your venlcle il
shift lever is not fully in PARK (P) with the
parking brake firmly set. Your vehicle can roll.
Don’t leave your vehicle when the engine is
running unless you have to.
If you have left the
engine running, the vehicle can move
suddenly. You or others could be injured.
CAUTION: (Continued)
o be sure your vehicle won’t move, even
when you’re on fairly level ground, always set
your parking brake and move the shift lever to PARK (P). See “Shifting Into Park (P)” in the
Index.
If you’re pulling a trailer, see “Towing a
Trailer” in the Index.
REVERSE (R): Use this gear to back up.
Notices Shifting to REVERSE (R) while your vehicle
is moving forward could damage your transmission.
Shift to REVERSE
(R) only after your vehicle is
stopped.

NEUTRAL (N): In this position, your engine doesn’t
connect with the wheels. To restart when you’re already
moving, use NEUTRAL
(N) only.

Hazard Warning Flashers
Your hazard warning flashers let you warn others. They
also let police know you have a problem, Your front
and rear turn signal
lamps will flash on and off.
But they won’t flash if you’re braking.

Turn SignaVMultifunction Lever
The lever on the left side of the steering column
includes the following:
Turn and Lane Change Signals
Headlamp High/Low-Beam Changer
Flash-to-Pass
Windshield Wipers
Windshield Washer
Cruise Control

Turn and Lane Change Signals
The turn signal has two upward (for right) and two
downward (for left) positions. These positions allow you
to signal a turn or a lane change.
To signal a turn, move the lever all the way up or down.
When the turn is finished, the lever will return automatically.
To signal a lane change, just raise
or lower the lever
until the arrow starts to flash. Hold it there until you
complete your lane change. The lever will return by itself
when you release it.
An arrow on the instrument
panel cluster will flash in
the direction of the
turn or lane change.
As you signal a turn or a lane change, if the arrows
flash more quickly than normal, a signal bulb may be burned out and other drivers won’t see your turn
signal.
If a bulb is burned out, replace it to help avoid an
accident. If the arrows don’t go on at all when you signal
a turn, check for burned-out bulbs and a blown fuse
(see Fuses
and Circuit Breakers on page 5-87).

Turn Signal On Chime
If your turn signal is left on for more than 3/4 of a mile
(1.2 km), a chime will sound at each flash of the
turn signal and the message TURN SIGNAL ON will
also appear in the
DIC. To turn the chime and message
off, move the turn signal lever td the off position.
Headlamp High/Low-Beam Changer
$0 io (Headlamp High/Low Beam Changer): To
change the headlamps from low
to high beam, push the
lever toward the instrument panel. To return
to
low-beam headlamps, pull the multifunction lever toward
you. Then release
it.
When the high beams are
on, this indicator light on
the instrument panel
cluster will also be on.

Flash-to-Pass
This feature lets you use your high-beam headlamps to
signal a driver in front of you that you want to pass.
It works even if your headlamps are in the automatic
position. To
use it, pull the turn signal lever toward you, then
release it.
If your headlamps are in the automatic position or on
low beam, your high-beam headlamps will turn on.
They’ll stay on
as long as you hold the lever toward you.
The high-beam indicator
on the instrument panel
cluster will come on. Release the lever
to return to
normal operation.
Windshield Wipers
You control the windshield wipers by turning the band
with the wiper symbol on it.
(Mist): For a single wiping cycle, turn the band to
mist. Hold it there until the wipers start. Then let go.
The wipers will stop after one wipe.
If you want
more wipes, hold the band on mist longer.
(Delay): You can set the wiper speed for a long or
short delay between wipes. This can be very useful
in light rain or snow. Turn the band to choose the delay
time. The closer
to the top of the lever, the shorter
the delay.
0 (Low Speed): For steady wiping at low speed,
turn the band away from you
to the first solid band past
the delay settings. For high-speed wiping, turn the
band further, to the second solid band past the delay
settings. To stop the wipers, move the band
to off.

(High Speed): For high-speed wiping, turn the
band further, to the second solid band past the
delay settings.
0 (Off): To stop the wipers, move the band to off.
Be sure to clear ice and snow from the wiper blades
before using them. If they're frozen to the windshield,
carefully loosen or thaw them. If your blades do become
worn or damaged, get new blades or blade inserts.
Windshield Washer
(Washer Fluid): There is a paddle marked with the
windshield washer symbol at the top
of the multifunction
lever. To spray washer fluid on the windshield, push
the paddle. The wipers will clear the window and then
either stop or return to your preset speed.
In
freezing weatt.-., dl_-.'t use your washer
until the windshield
is warmed. Otherwise the
washer fluid can form ice
on the windshield,
blocking your vision.
Rear Window WasherNViper
This knob is located on the
instrument panel to the left
of the steering wheel.
To turn the rear wiper on, turn the knob to either
1 or 2.
For long delayed wiping, turn the knob to 1. For short
delayed wiping, turn the knob
to 2
0 (Off): To turn the wiper off, turn the knob to this
symbol.
a (Washer Fluid): To wash the window, press the
knob with this symbol.
The rear window washer uses the same fluid bottle
as
the windshield washer. However, the rear window
washer will run out
of fluid before the windshield washer.
If you can wash your windshield but not your rear
windows, check the fluid level.

Settirn Cruise Cor+poI
If you leave your cruise control on when you’re
not using cruise, you might hit a button and go
into cruise when you don’t want to. You could
be startled and even lose control. Keep the
cruise control switch
off until you want to use
cruise control.
1. Move the cruise control switch to on.
2. Get up to the speed you want.
3. Press in the set button at the end of the lever and
release it.
4. Take your foot off the accelerator pedal.
The
CRUISE light on the
instrument panel will
illuminate when the cruise
control is engaged.
Resuming a Set Speed
Suppose you set your cruise control at a desired speed
and then you apply the brake. This, of course,
dismgages
the cruise cor;trol. But ~OLI dcn’t need to
reset it.
Once you’re going about
25 mph (40 km/h) or more, you
can move the cruise control switch briefly from on to
resume/accelerate.
You’ll go right back up
to your chosen speed and
stay there.
If you hold the switch at resume/accelerate the vehicle
will keep going faster until you release the switch or
apply the brake.
So unless you want to go faster, don’t
hold the switch at resume/accelerate.

Exterior Lamps
The control on the driver’s side of your instrument panel
operates the exterior lamps.
The exterior lamp control has four positions:
AUTO: Turn the control to this position to put the
system into automatic headlamp mode. The Daytime
Running Lamps (DRL) will also be activated
if it is light
enough outside.
A light near the symbol will be lit
when in this mode.
0 (Off): Turn the control to this position and release it
to turn
off all exterior lamps including the DRLs. A
light near the symbol will be lit when in this mode.
To turn the lamps back on when in this mode, turn the
switch to the headlamp mode. The
off mode will
cancel when the vehicle is turned
off. This mode is not
available for vehicles first sold in Canada.
:oo: (Parking Lamps): Turn the control to this position
to turn on the parking lamps, together with the
following:
Parking Lamps
Sidemarker Lamps
Taillamps
License Plate Lamps
Instrument Panel Lights
$0 (Headlamps): Turn the control to this position to
turn
on the headlamps, together with the previously
listed lamps and lights.
When the vehicle is turned
off and the headlamps are in
AUTO, the headlamps may automatically remain on
for a set time. You can change this delay time using the
DIC. See Driver hformation Center
(DIC) on page 3-43.
You can switch your headlamps from low to high-beam
by pushing the turn signaVmultifunction lever toward
the instrument panel.
