5-24 3. Insert the hoist end
(open end) (F) of the
extension through
the hole (G) in the
rear bumper.
Be sure the hoist end of the extension connects into
the hoist shaft (E). The ribbed square end of the
extension is used to lower the spare tire.
4. Turn the wheel wrench (H) counterclockwise to
lower the spare tire to the ground. Continue to turn
the wheel wrench until the spare tire can be pulled
out from under the vehicle. 5. The wheel wrench has a
hook that allows you to
pull the hoist cable
towards you to assist in
reaching the spare tire.
6. When the tire has
been lowered, tilt the
retainer (D) at the end of
the cable so it can be
pulled up through the
wheel opening.
7. Put the spare tire near the flat tire.
Use the following pictures and instructions to remove
the flat tire and raise the vehicle.

5-293. Remove all the wheel
nuts and take off the
flat tire.
4. Remove any rust or dirt
from the wheel bolts,
mounting surfaces and
spare wheel. CAUTION: Rust or dirt on the wheel, or on the parts to
which it is fastened, can make the wheel nuts
become loose after a time. The wheel could come
off and cause an accident. When you change a
wheel, remove any rust or dirt from the places
where the wheel attaches to the vehicle. In an
emergency, you can use a cloth or a paper towel
to do this; but be sure to use a scraper or wire
brush later, if you need to, to get all the rust or
dirt off.
CAUTION: Never use oil or grease on studs or nuts. If you
do, the nuts might come loose. Your wheel could
fall off, causing a serious accident.

spare, put the wheel
nuts back on with the
rounded end of the nuts
toward the wheel.
Tighten each wheel nut
by hand. Then use the
wheel wrench to tighten
the nuts until the wheel
is held against the hub.
Front Position 6. Turn the wheel wrench
counterclockwise to
lower the vehicle. Lower
the jack completely.

5-38Rocking Your Vehicle To Get It Out First, turn your steering wheel left and right. That will
clear the area around your front wheels. Then shift back
and forth between REVERSE (R) and a forward gear,
spinning the wheels as little as possible. Release the
accelerator pedal while you shift, and press lightly on
the accelerator pedal when the transmission is in gear.
By slowly spinning your wheels in the forward and
reverse directions, you will cause a rocking motion that
may free your vehicle. If that doesn't get you out after a
few tries, you may need to be towed out. Or, you can use
your recovery hooks if your vehicle has them. If you do
need to be towed out, see ªTowing Your Vehicleº in
the Index. Using the Recovery Hooks
Your vehicle is equipped with recovery hooks. The
hooks are provided at the front of your vehicle. You may
need to use them if you're stuck off
- road and need to be
pulled to some place where you can continue driving.

5-39CAUTION: These hooks, when used, are under a lot of force.
Always pull the vehicle straight out. Never pull
on the hooks at a sideways angle. The hooks
could break off and you or others could be
injured from the chain or cable snapping back.
NOTICE: Never use the recovery hooks to tow the vehicle.
Your vehicle could be damaged and it would not
be covered by warranty.

6-12Checking Engine Oil It's a good idea to check your engine oil every time you
get fuel. In order to get an accurate reading, the oil must
be warm and the vehicle must be on level ground.
The engine oil dipstick is a
loop handle and is located
in the engine compartment
on the passenger's side of
the vehicle. See ªEngine
Compartment Overviewº in
the Index for more
information on location. Turn off the engine and give the oil several minutes to
drain back into the oil pan. If you don't, the oil dipstick
might not show the actual level.
Pull out the dipstick and clean it with a paper towel or
cloth, then push it back in all the way. Remove it again,
keeping the tip down, and check the level.

6-19Passenger Compartment Air Filter The filter is located under the instrument panel below
the glove compartment.
To replace the passenger compartment air filter do
the following:
1. Remove the bolts on the access panel and set the
panel aside. Because this operation can be a little
difficult, you may choose to have it done at your
dealer's service department.
2. Reach under the
instrument panel
towards the front of
the vehicle and pull
downward on the
filter retaining bracket. 3. Remove the air filter by pulling downward on the
element. Remove the second portion of the air filter
by sliding it towards the rear of the vehicle and then
pulling downward.
4. Install the new filter by reversing the steps listed
previously. Be sure to follow any instructions that
may be included in the replacement filter package.
Refer to the Maintenance Schedule to determine
when to replace the passenger compartment air filter.

6-20Automatic Transmission Fluid When to Check and Change A good time to check your automatic transmission fluid
level is when the engine oil is changed.
Change both the fluid and filter every 50,000 miles
(83 000 km) if the vehicle is mainly driven under one or
more of these conditions:
In heavy city traffic where the outside temperature
regularly reaches 90 F (32 C) or higher.
In hilly or mountainous terrain.
When doing frequent trailer towing.
Uses such as found in taxi, police or delivery service.
If you do not use your vehicle under any of
these conditions, change the fluid and filter
every 100,000 miles (166 000 km).

may choose to have this done at the dealership
service department.
If you do it yourself, be sure to follow all the
instructions here, or you could get a false reading
on the dipstick.
NOTICE: Too much or too little fluid can damage your
transmission. Too much can mean that some of
the fluid could come out and fall on hot engine
parts or exhaust system parts, starting a fire.
Too little fluid could cause the transmission to
overheat. Be sure to get an accurate reading if
you check your transmission fluid.

6-22 Then, without shutting off the engine, follow these steps:
Your vehicle will have
either the transmission
dipstick handle labeled
ªTRANS/LOCKº or
will be labeled with
the graphic shown.
1. Flip the handle up and then pull out the dipstick and
wipe it with a clean rag or paper towel. 2. Push it back in all the way, wait three seconds and
then pull it back out again.
3. Check both sides of the dipstick, and read the lower
level. The fluid level must be in the COLD area,
below the cross
- hatched area, for a cold check or in
the HOT area or cross
- hatched area for a hot check.
4. If the fluid level is in the acceptable range, push the
dipstick back in all the way; then flip the handle
down to lock the dipstick in place.

6-31Windshield Washer Fluid What to Use When you need windshield washer fluid, be sure to read
the manufacturer's instructions before use. If you will be
operating your vehicle in an area where the temperature
may fall below freezing, use a fluid that has sufficient
protection against freezing. See ªEngine Compartment
Overviewº in the Index for reservoir location.
Adding Washer Fluid Your vehicle has a low washer fluid message that comes
on when the washer fluid is low. The message is
displayed for 15 seconds at the start of each ignition
cycle. When the LOW WASHER FLUID message is
displayed, you will need to add washer fluid to the
windshield washer fluid reservoir.
The windshield washer fluid
reservoir is located in the
engine compartment toward
the front of the vehicle on
the driver's side. Open the cap with the washer symbol on it. Add washer
fluid until the tank is full.
NOTICE: When using concentrated washer fluid,
follow the manufacturer's instructions for
adding water.
Don't mix water with ready
- to
- use washer
fluid. Water can cause the solution to freeze
and damage your washer fluid tank and
other parts of the washer system. Also,
water doesn't clean as well as washer fluid.
Fill your washer fluid tank only
three
- quarters full when it's very cold. This
allows for expansion if freezing occurs,
which could damage the tank if it is
completely full.
Don't use engine coolant (antifreeze) in
your windshield washer. It can damage
your washer system and paint.
