A/C System Service
Performance Test
The performance test will help determine if the air con-
ditioner system is operating within specifications.
Use only service equipment that is U.L.-listed and is cer-
tified to meet the reouirements of SAE J2210 to remove
HFC-134a (R-134a) from the air conditioner system.
CAUTION: Exposure to air conditionor rofrigerant and
lubricant vapor or mist can irrilalo €yes, nose and
throat. Avoid breathing tho air conditioner rstrigerrnt
and lubricant vapor or mist,
lf accidental system discharge occurs, ventilate work
area before resuming service.
R-134a service equipment or vehicle air conditioner sys-
tems should not be pressure tested or leak tested with
compressed air.
@ some mixtur$ of air and R-134a have been
shown lo b9 combustible rt glgvatad pr€ssur63 and can
resull in tire 01 oxplosion causing inlury ot property
damage. Never uao compre33ed air to pressure t99t R-
134a ssrvico 6quipmsnt or vohicla air conditioner sys-
tems.
Additional health and safety information may be obtained
from the refrigerant and lubricant manufacturers.
'1. Connect a R-134a refrigerant recover/recycling/
charging station to the vehicle, as shown, following
the equipment manufacturer's instructions.
2. lnsert a thermometer in the center vent outlet.
Determine the relative humidity and air tempera-
ture,
Test conditions:
. Avoid direct sunlight.
. Open hood.
. Open front doors.
. Set the temDerature control lever or dial to MAX,
COOL, the mode control switch or dial on VENT
and the recirculation control switch on RECIRCU-
LATE.
. Turn the A,/C switch on. and the heater fan switch
on MAX.
. Run the engine at 1,500 rpm.
. No driver or passengers in vehicle
After running the air conditioning for 10 minutes
under the above test conditions, read the delivery
temperature from the thermometer in the dash vent
and the high and low system pressure from the A,/C
gauges.

5. To complete the charts:
. Mark the delivery temperature along the venical line.
. Mark the intake temperatu re (am bient a ir temperatu re) alongthe bottom line.
. Draw a line straight up from the air temperature to the humidity.
. Mark a point 10% above and 10% below the humidity level.
. From each point. draw a horizontal line across the delivery temperature.
. The deliverv temperature should fall between the two lines.
. Complete the low side pressure test and high side pressure test in the same way.
. Any measurements outside the line may indicate the need for further inspection.

5. Remove the screw from the field coil ground termi-
nal, then disconnect the field coil connector.
Remove snap ring A with snap ring pliers, then
remove the field coil
NOTE:
. Be careful not to damage the field coil and com-
pressor during remove/installation.
. Once snap ring A is removed, replace it with a
new one.
. When installing the field coil, align the boss on
the field coil with the hole in the compressor.
SNAP RING AReplace.
Position the rotor pulley squarely over the field coil.
Press the rotor pulley onto the compressor boss
with the special tool. lf the rotor pulley does not
press on straight, remove it, and check the rotor
pulley and compressor boss for burrs or damage.
CAUTION: Maximum press load: 39,200 kPa

Make note of the following items.
. lnstall the field coil with the wire side facing down.
. Clean the rotor pulley and compressor sliding
surfaces with non-petroleum solvent.
. Make sure the snap rings are fully seated in the
groove.
. Make sure that the rotor pulley turns smoothly
after it's reassembled
. Route and clamp the wires properly or they can
be damaged bY the rotor Pulley.

JArmature Inspection and Test
1.Inspect the armature for wear or damage due to con-
tact with the permanent magnet or field winding.
. lf there is wear or damage. replace the armature.
Inspect for damage.
2. Check commutator surface and diameter.
. lf the surface is dirty or burnt. resurface with emery
cloth or a lathe within the following specifications,
or recondition with #500 or #600 sandpaper.
. lf commutator diameter is below the service limit,
replace the armature.
Commutator Diameter

3. Measure the commutator runout.
. lf the commutator runout is within the service
limit, check the commutator for carbon dust or
brass chips betlveen the segments.
. lf the commutator runout is not within the ser-
vice limit, replace the armature.

JBrush Holder Test
1. Check that there is no continuity between the O and
o brush holders.
lf there is continuity, replace the brush holder
assemoly.
O BRUSH HOLDER
@ BRUSH HOLDER€) BRUSH HOLDER
2. Insert the brush into the brush holder, and b.ing the
brush into contact with the commutator, then attach
a spring scale to the spring. Measure the spring ten-
sion at the moment the spring lifts off the brush.
SPRING SCALE
Spring Tension
15.7 - 17.7 N (1.60 - 1.80 kgf. 3.5 - 4.0 lbf)
ERUSH
Brush Inspection
Measure the brush length. lf not within the service limit,
replace the brush (or brush holder assembly).
Brush Length
NOTE: To seat new brushes after installing them in their
holders, slip a strip ot #500 or #600 sandpaper. with the
grit side up, over the commutator and smoothly rotate
the armature. The contact surface of the brushes will be
sanded to the same contour as the commutator.
Overrunning Clutch lnspection
Slide the overrunning clutch along the shaft. Does it
move freely? lf not, replace it.
Rotate the overrunning clutch both ways. Does it
lock in one direction and rotate smoothly in
reverse? lf it does not lock in either direction or it
locks in both directions, replace it.
