Locking/Unlocking the Doors from the Outside
■Locking the doors
Press the lock button.
Once: u Some exterior lights flash, all the doors
and hatch lock, and the security system
sets.
Twice (within five seco nds after the first
push): u The beeper sounds and verifies the
security system is set.
■Unlocking the doors
Press the unlock button.
Once: u Some exterior lights flash twice, and the
driver's door unlocks.
Twice:
u The passenger’s door and the hatch
unlock.
■Using the Remote Transmitter
1Using the Remote Transmitter
If you do not open a door within 30 seconds of
unlocking the vehicle with the remote transmitter,
the doors and the hatch will automatically relock.
You can change the relock timer setting.

If the interior light switch is in the door activated
position, the interior light s come on when you press
the UNLOCK button.
No doors opened: The li ghts fade out after 30
seconds.
Doors relocked with the remote: The lights go off

The remote transmitter us es low-power signals, so
the operating range may vary depending on the
surroundings.
The remote will not lock th e vehicle when a door or
the hatch is open.
If the distance at which the remote transmitter works
varies, the battery is probably low. Replace the
button battery as soon as possible.
If the LED does not come on when you press a

■Lockout prevention system
The doors and the hatch cannot be locked wh en the key is in the ignition switch, and
either door or the hatch is open.

When you lock the driver's door with a key, all the
doors and hatch lock at the same time. When
unlocking, the driver's door unlocks first. Turn the
key a second time within a few seconds to unlock the
passenger’s door and the hatch.
You can customize the door unlock mode setting.

Pull the lock tab.

Push the lock tab in.
Pull the door inner handle. u The door unlocks and opens in one
motion.

When you lock the door using the lock tab on the
driver's door, the other door and hatch lock at the
same time.
When you unlock the door using the lock tab on the
driver's door, only the driv er's door will unlock.

The inner door handles are designed to allow
occupants to open the door in one motion. However
this feature requires that occupants never pull a door

Auto Door Locking/Unlocking
Your vehicle locks all doors and unlocks the driver’s door automatically when a
certain condition is met.
■Drive lock mode
The auto door lock function automatically locks all the doors and hatch when the
vehicle reaches about 10 mph (15 km/h).
■Park unlock mode
The driver’s door unlocks when the shift lever is moved into
(P with the brake pedal
depressed. The settings can be changed to unlock all doors.
■Ignition switch unlock mode
The driver’s door unlocks when the ignition switch is moved out of ON
(w. The
settings can be changed to unlock all doors.

Opening and Closing the Hatch
Precautions for Opening/Closing the Hatch
Always make sure individuals and objects are clear of the hatch before opening or
closing it.
■Opening the hatch
• Open the hatch all the way.
u If it is not fully opened, the hatch may come down accidentally by its own
weight.
• Be careful when it is windy. The wind may cause the hatch to close.
■Closing the hatch
Keep the hatch closed while driving to: u Avoid possible damage.
u Prevent exhaust gas from leaking into the vehicle.

1Precautions for Openi ng/Closing the Hatch
Be careful not to hit your head on the hatch or to put
your hands between the ha tch and the cargo area
when closing the hatch.
When you are storing or pi cking up luggage from the
cargo area while the engine is idling, do not stand in
front of the exhaust pipe. You may get burned.
Do not allow any passenger in the cargo space.
They may get hurt during ha rd braking, a sudden
acceleration, or a crash.

Security System
Immobilizer System
The immobilizer system prevents a key that has not been pre-registered from
starting the engine. Each key contains electronic transmitters that use electronic
signals to verify the key.
Pay attention to the following when inserting the key into the ignition switch:
• Do not allow objects that emit strong radio waves near the ignition switch.
• Make sure the key is not covered by or touching a metal object.
• Do not bring a key from another vehicle's immobilizer system near the ignition
switch.
Security System Alarm
The security system alarm activates when the doors, hatch, or hood are opened
without the key, or remote transmitter.
■When the security system alarm activates
The horn sounds intermittently, and all of the exterior lights flash.
■To deactivate the security system alarm
Unlock the vehicle using the key or remote tr ansmitter or turn the ignition switch to
ON
(w. The system, along with the horn and flashing lights, is deactivated.
1 Immobilizer System
NOTICE
Leaving the ignition key in the vehicle can result in
theft or accidental move ment of the vehicle.
Always take the ignition key with you whenever you
leave the vehicle unattended.
Do not alter the system or add other devices to it.
Doing so may damage the system and make your
vehicle inoperable.
1 Security System Alarm
The security alarm continues for a maximum of two
minutes until the security system alarm deactivates.

■Setting the security system alarm
The security system alarm automatically sets when the following conditions have
been met:
• The ignition switch is in LOCK
(0, and the key has been removed from the
ignition switch.
• The hood is closed.
• Both doors and the hatch are locked with the key or the remote transmitter.
■When the security system alarm sets
The security system alarm indicator in the instrument panel blinks. When the
blinking interval changes after about 15 seconds, the security system alarm is set.
■To cancel the security system alarm
The security system alarm is canceled when the vehicle is unlocked using the key or
remote transmitter, or the igniti on switch is turned to ON
(w. The security system
alarm indicator goes off at the same time.
■The panic button on the remote
transmitter
If you press the panic button for
approximately one seco nd, the following will
occur for about 30 seconds:
• The horn sounds.
• Some exterior lights flash.
■Canceling panic mode
Press any button on the remote transmitter, or turn the ignition switch to ON
(w.

1Security System Alarm
Do not set the security system alarm when someone
is in the vehicle or a window is open. The system can
accidentally activate when unlocking the door with
the lock tab or the master door lock switch.
If the 12 volt battery goes dead after you have set the
security system alarm, the security alarm may go off
once the battery is re charged or replaced.
If this occurs, deactivate the security system alarm by
unlocking a door using the ke y or remote transmitter.
Do not attempt to alter th is system or add another
device to it.

Opening and Closing the Windows
Opening/Closing the Power Windows
The power windows can be opened and clos ed when the ignition switch is in ON
(w, using the switches on the doors. The driver side switches can be used to open
and close both windows.
The power window lock button on the driver side must be switched off (not pushed
in) to open and close the passenger’s window from the passenger's side.
When the power window lock button is pushed in, you can only operate the driver's
window. Turn the power window lock button on if a child rides in the passenger’s
seat.
■Automatic operation
To open: Push the switch down firmly.
To close: Pull the switch up firmly.
The window opens or closes completely. To
stop the window at any time, push or pull the
switch briefly.
■Manual operation
To open: Push the switch down lightly, and
hold it until the desired position is reached.
To close: Pull the switch up lightly, and hold it
until the desired position is reached.
■Opening/Closing Windows with Auto-Open/Close Function
1 Opening/Closing the Power Windows
The power windows can be operated for up to 10
minutes after you turn the ignition switch off.
Opening either door cancels this function.
Auto Reverse
If a power window senses resistance when closing
automatically, it will stop closing and reverse
direction.
The driver’s window auto re verse function is disabled
when you continuously pull up the switch.
The auto reverse function stops sensing when the
window is almost closed to en sure that it fully closes.
3WARNING
Closing a power window on someone's
hands or fingers can cause serious injury.
Make sure your passenger is away from the
window before closing it.
