You need a helper to check the brake pedal clearance. With the engine run- ning, have your helper press down on the brake pedal several times and thenhold it down with a force of about 490 N (50 Kg, 110 lbs). The brake pedal clearance is the distance from the topsurface of the brake pedal to the as- phalt sheeting under the floor mat. If the brake pedal clearance is notwithin the limits specified in the illustra- tion, have it inspected by your Hyundai dealer and adjusted or repaired if nec-essary. HTB186

With the engine off, press down on the brake pedal several times to reduce the vacuum in the brake booster.Then, using your hand, press down slowly on the brake pedal until you feel a change in resistance. This is thebrake pedal freeplay. The freeplay should be within the limits specified in the illustration. If it is not,have it inspected by your Hyundai dealer and adjusted or repaired if nec- essary. Drive belts should be checked periodi- cally for proper tension and adjusted if necessary. At the same time, beltsshould be examined for cracks, wear, fraying or other evidence of deteriora- tion and replaced if necessary.Belt routing should also be checked to be sure there is no interference be- tween the belts and other parts of theengine. After a belt is replaced, the new belt should be adjusted again after two or three weeks to eliminateslack resulting from initial stretching after use.

61COMBINATION TURN SIGNAL, HEADLIGHT AND HIGH-BEAMSWITCH
B340A01A-AAT Turn Signal Operation Pulling down on the lever causes the turn signals on the left side of the car toblink. Pushing upwards on the lever causes the turn signals on the right side of the car to blink. As the turn is com-pleted, the lever will automatically re- turn to the center position and turn off the turn signals at the same time. Ifeither turn signal indicator light blinks more rapidly than usual, goes on but does not blink, or does not go on at all,there is a malfunction in the system. Check for a burned-out fuse or bulb or see your Hyundai dealer.
NOTE:
o If the distance to empty is less
than 50km (30 miles), a blinking "----" symbol will be dispalyed.
o The distance to empty can differ from the actual tripmeter accord-ing to driving conditions.

For the cigar lighter to work, the keymust be in the "ACC" or the "ON" position. To use the cigar lighter, push the lighterall the way into its socket. When the element is heated, the lighter will pop out into the "ready" position.Do not hold the cigar lighter at the depressed position which may result in damage to the vehicle wiring or anelectrical fire. If it is necessary to replace the cigarette lighter, use only a genuine Hyundaireplacement part.

vehicle towing attachment each and every time the trailer is hitched to thevehicle. Whilst towing, the performance of the vehicle will be reduced in terms of acceleration, braking and handling due to the increased loads placed upon thevehicle. The driver should anticipate the change in characteristics and ad- just the driving style in keeping withthese changes. Care should be exer- cised when cornering and braking to prevent the outfit becoming uncontrol-lable by reducing cornering speeds and allowing increased braking dis- tances. The driver should exercise care to ensure that when pulling away fromrest particularly on uphill gradients the clutch unit is not subjected to exces- sive slippage which will reduce theuseful life of this component. Use of the "Overdrive Off", "2" and "L" posi- tions when driving vehicles with auto-matic transmission will assist with brak- ing performance when long down hill gradients are encountered. Improved acceleration performance will be avail-able by selecting "Overdrive Off","2",or "1" depending upon road speed if it is found that the transmission unit makes an undesirable upshift whilsthill climbing or overtaking. The trans- mission unit should be operated in "D" with the Overdrive "On" under normalcircumstances to enhance fuel economy and reduce noise and en- gine wear.

The use of a proprietary stabiliser willassist in achieving an inherently stableoutfit but whilst the use of such equip- ment will improve the characteristics of a balanced outfit, it will not compen-sate for a badly loaded and therefore unstable outfit. The tyres and braking equipment fitted to the trailer or caravan must be main- tained in accordance with the recom-mendations of the manufacturer. Spe- cial attention should be paid to tyres which deteriorate through time andexposure rather than as a result of the distances towed. The inside walls of the tyres should be inspected alongwith the outside walls for cracking and damage. The trailer wheel nut torque must be checked on a regular basis,preferably before each towing ses- sion. The trailer hitch and the safety catch mechanism must be maintained in good working order. The trailer break awaycable or chain should be inspected for damage and should be attached to the

tain electronic fuel injection/engine management and automatic trans- mission control systems requirespecialised electronic equipment specifically designed for Hyundai vehicles. The use of general pur-pose electrical test equipment may result in damage to the control unit microprocessors.

Specified Scheduled Procedures
The Specified scheduled procedures
are listed in the maintenance chartsbeginning at page 5-3. The opera- tions specified must be performed at the time or mileage intervals shownirrespective of whether the mileage interval has been reached before the specified time interval. Certain lubricants and components
degrade with both time and mileage(e.g. engine oil and brake fluid) and therefore it is not permissable to base the maintenance schedule upon mile-age alone. It is strongly recommended that the maintenance operations are performed by the factory-trained or distributor-trained technicians at yourHyundai dealer because of the need for specialized knowledge and tooling and to ensure that no possibility ofinvalidating the manufacturers war- ranty exists.
The maintenance schedules relate to
vehicles operated under normal con-ditions, vehicles which are operated under adverse conditions will requiremore frequent maintenance which is described at page 5-6. NOTE:
Service schedules may change de-
pending on individual country needs. Please ask your local Hyundai dealer for a copy of the service schedule that relates to thatcountry.

ENGINE OIL AND FILTER REPLACEMENT
o The engine oil consumption is strongly effected by the viscosity and quality of oil, engine rpm and driving condi- tion etc. More engine oil may be consumedunder severe driving conditions such as high speeds, frequent accelera- tion and deceleration, compared tonormal driving. G040A04A-EAT
The engine oil and filter must be changedat the time or mileage interval specifiedin the maintenance schedule. If the vehicle is operated under severe or adverse conditions, the oil and filtermust be replaced more frequently. To replace the oil and filter, proceed as follows:
1. Ensure that the engine is at normaloperating temperature and park the vehicle on level ground with the park- ing brake securely applied and the engine turned off.
2. Open the bonnet and remove the oil filler cap.

SG050D1-E To Change the Coolant The coolant should be changed at those intervals specified in the vehicle main-tenance schedule in Section 5. NOTE: Care should be taken to ensure that coolant is not allowed to spill onto the paintwork since the finish may become damaged. If coolant spill-age occurs, the affected area should be rinsed thoroughly with water.
1. Park the vehicle on level ground and
ensure that the parking brake is firmly applied, and the engine allowed tocool. Do not attempt this operation whilst the engine is hot since burning orscalding may result.
2. Prepare a suitable receptacle to col-
lect the displaced coolant and posi-tion this under the radiator drain tap.
3. With the heater temperature control
set to the "HOT" position, removethe radiator cap and open the radiator drain tap.

6. Start the engine with the radiator capstill removed and continue to add coolant as the level decreases as air is expelled from the system. When the level remains constant, replacethe radiator cap and replenish the coolant reservoir.
7. When the engine is hot, check to ensure that no coolant leaks arepresent.
4. When the engine coolant has drained completely, close the drain tap en-suring that this is not over tightened.
5. Prepare a suitable quantity of new
engine coolant (refer to section 9)and pour this into the radiator. WARNING:
The cooling fan is controlled by en- gine coolant temperature and maysometimes operate even when the engine is not running. Use extreme caution when working near theblades of the cooling fan so that you are not injured by a rotating fan blade. As the engine coolant tem-perature decreases, the fan will auto- matically shut off. This is a normal condition.

SG130A1-C To Check the Clutch Fluid The clutch fluid level in the master cylinder should be checked when per-forming other under bonnet checks. The system should be checked for leakage at the same time.Ensure that the clutch fluid level is always between the "MAX" and "MIN" level markings on the fluid reservoir. Fillas required. Fluid loss indicates a leak in the clutch system which should be inspected and repaired immediately.
WARNING:
Brake fluid is hygroscopic andshould never be stored in an un- sealed container. The presence of water in the braking system will causevapour locks and increase the possi- bility of brake fade along with pro- moting corrosion within the brakingsystem. The brake fluid must be changed at the specified time or mile- age interval to ensure continued safeoperation of the system. Brake fluid will cause rapid and serious damage to paintwork. If accidental spillageoccurs, the affected area must be rinsed with water immediately. Do not allow brake fluid to come intocontact with the eyes or to be in- gested and ensure that fluid is safely stored away form the reach of chil-dren.
