BEFORE STARTING THE EN- GINE
C020A01O-GAT Before you start the engine, you should always:
1. Look around the vehicle to be sure
there are no flat tires, puddles of oil, water or other indications of pos- sible trouble.
2. After entering the car, check to be sure the parking brake is engaged.
3. Check that all windows, and lights are clean.
4. Check that the interior and exterior
mirrors are clean and in position.
5. Check your seat, seatback and headrest to be sure they are in theirproper positions.
6. Lock all the doors.
7. Fasten your seat belt and be sure
that all other occupants have fas- tened theirs.
8. Turn off all lights and accessories
that are not needed.
9. When you turn the ignition switch to "ON", check that all appropriatewarning lights are operating andthat you have sufficient fuel.
10.Check the operation of warning
lights and all bulbs when key is inthe "ON" position. WARNING: (DIESEL ENGINE)
To ensure that sufficient vacuum exists within the brake system dur-ing cold weather start-up condi- tions, it is necessary to run the engine at idle for several secondsafter starting the engine.
!WARNING:
o In a collision crash, an unbelted person is significantly more likely to die than a person wearing a seatbelt.
o Your vehicle is equipped with tires designed to provide for saferide and handling capability.Do not use a size and type of tire and wheel that is different from the one that is originally installedon your vehicle. It can affect the safety and performance of your vehicle, which could lead to han-dling failure or rollover and seri- ous injury. When replacing the tires, be sureto equip all four tires with the tire and wheel of the same size, type, tread, brand and load-carryingcapacity. If you nevertheless de- cide to equip your vehicle with any tire/wheel combination notrecommended by Hyundai for off- road driving, you should not use these tires for highway driving.

o "START" The engine is started in this position. It will crank until you release the key. C040A01A-AAT
NOTE: Do not hold the key in the "START" position for more than 15 seconds.
o "ON" When the key is in the "ON" position, the ignition is on and all accessories may be turned on. If the engine is notrunning, the key should not be left in the "ON" position. This will discharge the battery and may also damage theignition system.
o "ACC" With the key in the "ACC" position, some electrical accessories (radio etc.)may be operated.
o "LOCK" The key can be removed or inserted in this position. To protect against theft, the steering wheel locks by removing the key. NOTE: To unlocking the steering wheel, insert the key, and then turn the steering wheel and key simulta-neously.
WARNING:
The engine should not be turned off or the key removed from the ignition key cylinder while the ve-hicle is in motion. The steering wheel is locked by removing the key.
TO START THE ENGINE

o If your Hyundai is equipped with a manual transaxle, place the shift lever in neutral and depress the clutch pedal fully.
o If your Hyundai has an automatic
transaxle, place the shift lever in "P"(park).
o To start the engine, insert the igni- tion key and turn it to the "START"position. Release it as soon as the engine starts. Do not hold the key inthe "START" position for more than 15 seconds.
NOTE: For safety, the engine will not start if the shift lever is not in "P" or "N" Position (Automatic transaxle).

To Remove The Ignition Key
1. Turn the ignition key to the "ACC"
position.
2. Simultaneously push and turn the
ignition key counterclockwise from the "ACC" position to the "LOCK" position.
3. The key can be removed in the "LOCK" position. C060A01A-GAT (For Carburetor) Normal Starting Procedure
1. If your car has manual transaxle,
place the shift lever in neutral and depress the clutch. If your car has automatic transaxle, place the shift lever in "P".
2. Turn the key to "START". Release the key as soon as the engine starts.If the engine does not start immedi-ately, do not operate the starter for more than 15 seconds at a time. Try again after waiting a few seconds. C060B01A-GAT If the Engine is Cold
1. Press the accelerator pedal all the
way to the floor, then release it.
2. Turn the key to the "START". Re-

o Depress and hold the accelerator
pedal about half of the way down while cranking.
NOTE: If the engine is hard to start at high ambient temperatures, hold the ac- celerator pedal on the floor duringcranking.
o Turn the ignition key to the "START" position, and then release the key and the pedal when the engine starts. C060C01A
WARM ENGINE
DEPRESS 1/2 DOWN C060D01A-GAT Flooded Engine Depress the accelerator pedal fully and hold it to the floor until the engine starts. Never "pump" the accelerator pedal. NOTE: When it is necessary to warm up the engine for an extended period, makesure there is no wastepaper or any other combustible matter near the end of the exhaust pipe.

DEPRESS FULLY
CAUTION:
Do not leave the car unattendedduring this warm-up period. If the car is in a garage, be sure that the garage door is open. Letting theengine door open, is a hazardous practice. Never run the engine in your garage any longer than it takesto start the engine and back the car out.

WARNING:
Never run the engine in a closed or poorly ventilated area any longer than is needed to move your car in or out of the area. The carbon mon-oxide gas emitted is odorless and can cause serious injury or death. C051A01O-GAT STARTING FOR THE DIESEL ENGINE ENGINE COLD
o Turn the ignition key to position
"ON" and wait for the pre-heat indi- cator light to go out.
o Operate the starter until the engine
runs.
ENGINE WARM Operate the starter. If the engine does not respond on the first attempt, wait several seconds and try again usingthe pre-heat.
C060E01A-GAT If the Engine Stalls If the engine stalls or dies after being started, repeat the appropriate start-ing procedure as directed above de- pending on whether the engine is cold, warm or hot.

NOTE: If the engine were not started within 10 seconds after the preheating is completed, turn the ignition key once more to the "LOCK" position,and then to the "ON" position, in order to preheat again. WARNING:
Be sure that the clutch is fully de-pressed when starting a manual transaxle vehicle. Otherwise thereis the potential to cause damage to the vehicle or injury to someone inside or outside the vehicle as aresult of the forward or backward movement of the vehicle that will occur if the clutch is not depressedwhen the vehicle is started.
5. Turn the ignition key to the "START" position and release it when the engine starts.

C050B02S-GAT NORMAL CONDITIONS The Starting Procedure:
1. Insert key, and fasten the seat belt.
2. Depress the clutch pedal fully and
place the gearshift lever (manualtransaxle) in neutral or the selectorlever (automatic transaxle) in "P" (park) position.
3. After turning the ignition key to the "ON" position, make certain all warn-ing lights and gauges are function- ing properly before starting the en-gine.
4. On vehicles equipped with the die-
sel preheat indicator light, turn theignition key to the "ON" position. The diesel pre-heat indicator light will first illuminate in amber, andthen after a short time, the amber illumination will go off, indicating that preheating is completed.

chains on the tire will provide a greater driving force, but will not prevent sideskids. NOTE: Tire chains are not legal in all prov- inces. Check province laws beforefitting tire chains. C160C01A-AAT Use High Quality Ethylene Glycol Coolant Your Hyundai is delivered with high quality ethylene glycol coolant in the cooling system. It is the only type ofcoolant that should be used because it helps prevent corrosion in the cooling system, lubricates the water pump andprevents freezing. Be sure to replace or replenish your coolant in accor- dance with the maintenance schedule CAUTION:
Don't use the tire chains in 185/55R15 tire to prevent body damage.
! C160G01A-GAT To Keep Locks from Freezing To keep the locks from freezing, squirt an approved de-icer fluid or glycerine into the key opening. If a lock is cov- ered with ice, squirt it with an approvedde-icing fluid to remove the ice. If the lock is frozen internally, you may be able to thaw it out by using a heatedkey. Handle the heated key with care to avoid injury. NOTE: The proper temperature for using the immobilizer key is from -40°C (-40°F) to 80°C(176°F). If you heat the immobilizer key over 80°C(176°F) to open the frozen lock, it may cause damage to the transpon- der in its head.
C160F01A-AAT Check Spark Plugs and Ignition System Inspect your spark plugs as described in Section 6 and replace them if neces-sary. Also check all ignition wiring and components to be sure they are not cracked, worn or damaged in any way.
C160D01A-AAT Check Battery and Cables Winter puts additional burdens on the battery system. Visually inspect the battery and cables as described inSection 6. The level of charge in your battery can be checked by your Hyun- dai dealer or a service station. C160E01A-AAT Change to "Winter Weight" Oil if Necessary In some climates it is recommended that a lower viscosity "winter weight" oil be used during cold weather. SeeSection 9 for recommendations. If you aren't sure what weight oil you should use, consult your Hyundai dealer.

D010B02A-AAT If Engine Doesn't Turn Over or Turns Over Slowly 1. If your car has an automatic
transaxle, be sure the gear selector lever is in "N" or "P" and the emer- gency brake is set.
2. Check the battery connections to be
sure they are clean and tight.
3. Turn on the interior light. If the light
dims or goes out when you operate the starter, the battery is discharged.
4. Check the starter connections to be
sure they are securely tightened.
5. Do not push or pull the vehicle to start it. See instructions for "JumpStarting on the following pages".
D010C02A-GAT If Engine Turns Over Normally but Does Not Start 1. Check fuel level. 2. With the key in the "OFF" position,
check all connectors at ignition coils and spark plugs(For Gasoline En- gine) or check all connectors atglow plug and glow plug relay(For Diesel Engine). Reconnect any that may be disconnected or loose.
3. If you smell gasoline, the engine may be flooded. See starting in-structions in Section 2.(For Carbu-retor)
4. Check fuel line in the engine room.5. If engine still refuses to start, call a
Hyundai dealer or seek other quali- fied assistance.

1. Reduce your speed gradually, keep- ing a straight line. Move cautiously off the road to a safe place.
2. Turn on your emergency flashers.
3. Try to start the engine again. If your
vehicle will not start, contact a Hyundai dealer or seek other quali- fied assistance.

IF THE ENGINE WILL NOT START
WARNING:
If the engine will not start, do not push or pull the car to start it. This could result in a collision or cause other damage. In addition, push orpull starting may cause the cata- lytic converter to be overloaded and create a fire hazard.

CAUTION:
A car with an automatic transaxle should never be towed from the rear with the front wheels on theground. This can cause serious damage to the transaxle. If the car must be towed from the rear, a tow-ing dolly must be used under the front wheels.

TRANSAXLE EQUIPPED VEHICLE
If the car is being towed with the rear wheels on the ground, be sure theparking brake is released.
NOTE: Before towing, check the level of the transaxle fluid. If it is below the"HOT" range on the dipstick, add fluid. If you cannot add fluid, a towing dolly must be used.

o If the car is being towed with the rear wheels on the ground, be sure the parking brake is released.
o If the car is being towed with the front wheels on the ground, be surethat the transaxle is in neutral. Also, be sure that the ignition key is in the"ACC" position. This is necessary to prevent damage to the steering lock mechanism, which is not designedto hold the front wheels straight while the car is being towed.
o If any of the loaded wheels or sus- pension components are damaged,a towing dolly must be used.
