MAINTENANCE UNDER SEVERE USAGE CONDITIONS

o Engine oil and filterThe engine oil and filter should be changed at
the intervals specified in the maintenance sched- ule. If the car is being driven in severe condi-tions, more frequent oil and filter changes arerequired.

o Drive belts Inspect all drive belts for evidence of cuts,
cracks, excessive wear or oil saturation and replace if necessary. Drive belts should be checked periodically for proper tension andadjusted as necessary.

o Fuel filterA clogged filter can limit the speed at which the
vehicle may be driven, damage the emission system and cause hard starting. If an exces-sive amount of foreign matter accumulates in
the fuel tank, the filter may require replacementmore frequently.
After installing a new filter, run the engine for
several minutes, and check for leaks at theconnections. F060D01A-AAT
o Fuel lines, fuel hoses and connec-
tions
Check the fuel lines, fuel hoses and connec-
tions for leakage and damage. Replace anydamaged or leaking parts immediately.

o Timing beltInspect all parts related to the timing belt for
damage and deformation. Replace any dam- aged parts immediately.

o Vapour hose and fuel filler capThe vapor hose and fuel filler cap should be
inspected at those intervals specified in the maintenance schedule. Make sure that a new
vapour hose or fuel filler cap is correctly re-placed.

o Vacuum, crankcase
ventilation hoses
Inspect the surface of hoses for evidence of
heat and/or mechanical damage. Hard andbrittle rubber, cracking, tears, cuts, abrasions,and excessive swelling indicate deterioration.Particular attention should be paid to examine
those hose surfaces nearest to high heat sourc-
es, such as the exhaust manifold. Inspect the hose routing to assure that the
hoses do not come in contact with any heatsource, sharp edges or moving component
which might cause heat damage or mechanicalwear. Inspect all hose connections, such as
clamps and couplings, to make sure they aresecure, and that no leaks are present. Hoses
should be replaced immediately if there is any
evidence of deterioration or damage.

o Air cleaner filter A Genuine Hyundai air cleaner filter is recom-
mended when filter is replaced.

o Spark plugsMake sure to install new spark plugs of the
correct heat range.

o Valve clearances Incorrect valve clearance will not only result in
unsteady engine operation, but will also cause excessive noise and reduced engine perfor-mance. Inspect valve clearance and adjust asrequired while the engine is hot.
Valve-to-rocker arm clearance Intake valves ..... 0.008 in. (0.2 mm)Exhaust valves .... 0.010 in. (0.25 mm)

4. Turn the radiator cap counterclockwise with- out pressing down on it, until it stops. This relieves any pressure remaining in the cool-ing system. And remove the radiator cap bypushing down and turning counterclockwise. Now fill the radiator with clean demineral- ized or distilled water. Continue to add cleandemineralized or distilled water in small quan-tities until the fluid level stays up in theradiator neck. 5. Start the engine, top off the radiator with
water and then add engine coolant to thereservoir until the level is between "LOW"and "FULL".
6. Replace the radiator and reservoir caps and check to be sure the drain cocks are fullyclosed and not leaking.
WARNING: The cooling fan is controlled by engine cool-
ant temperature and may sometimes oper- ate even when the engine is not running.Use extreme caution when working near theblades of the cooling fan so that you are notinjured by a rotating fan blade. As the en-gine coolant temperature decreases, the fanwill automatically shut off. This is a normalcondition. AG060B1-E
SPARK PLUG REPLACEMENT
This operation should only be performed when
the engine is cold.
1. Remove plug lead from the spark plug to be replaced, pulling the lead by the rubber cap. (Pulling the lead may damage the carbonconductor).
2. Clean around the base of the plug to be removed, and install the plug socket ensur-ing that the ceramic insulator does not be-come damaged. Turn the socket anti-clock-wise to remove the plug.

NOTE: Spark plugs must only be cleaned using
purpose designed equipment. Wire brush-ing may damage the centre electrode insula-tor causing mis-firing to occur.

CHANGING THE AIR CLEANER FIL- TER
To change the filter, loosen the clamps (1) on the cover. When this is done, the cover can be
lifted off, the old filter removed and the new filterput in its place. Genuine Hyundai replacementparts are recommended. CAUTION: Operating your vehicle without a proper air filter in place can result in excessive enginewear.

Only the correct grade of spark plug should be used. Use of an incorrect grade mayresult in serious engine damage. Prior to installing a spark plug, the gap between the centre and outer electrodesmust be checked and adjusted as neces-sary. Adjustment is facilitated by bending the outer electrode towards or away from the centreelectrode. Under no circumstances shouldattempts be made to adjust the position ofthe centre electrode.
3. Insert the spark plug into the cylinder head and screw by and until the plug contacts theseating area. Tighten the plug with the sock-et by a further 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn only.
4. Replace the plug lead ensuring that the cap is pushed firmly into place. Confirm that thecap is correctly seated by lightly pullingupon it.G060C03A CHAMPION : RC9YC4
