E030A02GK-AAT Washing Your Hyundai Never wash your car when the surface is hot from being in the sun. Alwayswash your car in the shade. Wash your car frequently. Dirt is abra- sive and can scratch the paint if it is not removed. Air pollution or acid rain may damage the paint and trim throughchemical action if pollutants are al- lowed to remain in contact with the surface. If you live near the ocean or inan area where road salts or dust con- trol chemicals are used, you should pay particular attention to the under-side of the car. Start by rinsing the car to remove dust and loose dirt. In win- ter, or if you have driven through mudor muddy water, be sure to thoroughly clean the underside as well. Use a hard direct stream of water to removeaccumulations of mud or corrosive materials. High pressure car washes may cause water to enter your vehicle.Use a good quality car-washing solu- tion and follow the manufacturer's di- rections on the package. These areavailable at your Hyundai dealer or auto parts outlet. Don't use strong house-hold detergents, gasoline, strong sol-vents or abrasive cleaning powders as these may damage the finish. Use a clean sponge or cloth, rinse itfrequently and don't damage the finish by rubbing too hard. For stubborn spots, dampen them frequently and removethem a little at a time. To clean whitewall tires, use a stiff brush or soapy steel-wool scouringpad. To clean plastic wheel covers, use a clean sponge or soft cloth and water. To clean cast aluminum alloy wheels, use a mild soap or neutral detergent.Do not use abrasive cleaners. Protect the bare-metal surfaces by cleaning, polishing and waxing. Because alumi-num is subject to corrosion, be sure to give aluminum alloy wheels special attention in winter. If you drive onsalted roads, clean the wheels thor- oughly afterwards. After washing, be sure to rinse thor- oughly. If soapy water dries on the finish, streaking will result.
When the weather is warm and thehumidity low, you may find it necessaryto rinse each section immediately after washing to avoid streaking. After rinsing, dry the car using a damp chamois or soft, absorbent cloth. The reason for drying the car is to removewater from the car so it will dry without water spots. Don't rub, this can dam- age the finish. If you find any nicks or scratches in the paint, use touch-up paint to cover themto prevent corrosion. To protect the paintwork of the car against corrosion, you must clean your Hyundai (at leastonce a month). Give special attention to the removal of salt, mud and other substances on the underside of thesplashboards of the car. Make sure that the outlets and the underside of the doors are open. Paint damage canbe caused by small accumulation of tar, industrial precipitation, tree resin, insects and bird droppings, when notremoved immediately. If water alone is not strong enough to remove the accu- mulated dirt, use a mild car washing

Although careful design andengineering have reduced these to a minimum, those that are required are of the utmost importance. It is your responsibility to have these maintenance procedures performed to comply with the terms of the warran-ties covering your new Hyundai. Maintenance Requirements
The maintenance required for your Hyundai can be divided into three main areas:

Specified Scheduled Procedures
These are the procedures such asinspections, adjustments and replace-ments that are listed in the mainte- nance charts starting on page 5-4. These procedures must be performedat the intervals shown in the mainte- nance schedule to assure that your warranty remains in effect. Although itis strongly recommended that they be performed by the factory-trained or distributor-trained technicians at yourHyundai dealer, these procedures may be performed at any qualified service facility. It is suggested that genuine Hyundai service parts be used for any required repairs or replacements. Other parts ofequivalent quality such as engine oil, engine coolant, manual or auto transaxle oil, brake fluid and so onwhich are not supplied by Hyundai Motor Company or its distributor may be used without affecting your war-ranty coverage but you should always be sure these are equivalent to the quality of the original Hyundai parts.Your Service Passport provides fur- ther information about your warranty coverage. A Few Tips
Whenever you have your Hyundai ser-
viced, keep copies of the service records in your glove box. This will help ensure that you can document that the required procedures have beenperformed to keep your warranties in effect. This is especially important when service is not performed by anauthorized Hyundai dealer. F020A02A-GAT Inspection should be performed any
time a malfunction is experienced or suspected. Receipts for all emission control system services should be re- tained to demonstrate compliance withconditions of the emissions system warranty.

Recommended Oil Engine oil is essential to the perfor-
mance and service of the engine. It is suggested that you check the oil levelat least once a week in normal use and more often if you are on a trip or driving in severe conditions.
The engine oil quality should meet

NOTE: Improper owner maintenance dur-
ing the warranty period may affect warranty coverage. WARNING:
o Performing maintenance work on a vehicle can be dangerous. You can be seriously injured while performing some maintenance procedures. If you lack sufficientknowledge and experience or the proper tools and equipment to do the work, have it done by anauthorized Hyundai dealer.
o Working under the hood with the engine running is dangerous. It becomes even more dangerous when you wear jewelry or looseclothing. These can become en- tangled in moving parts and re- sult in injury. Therefore, if youmust run the engine while work- ing under the hood, make certain that you remove all jewelry (espe-cially rings, bracelets, watches, and necklaces) and all neckties, scarves, and similar loose cloth-ing before getting near the en- gine or cooling fans.

To Check the Oil Level
Before checking the oil, warm up the
engine to the normal operating tem- perature and be sure it is parked on level ground. Turn the engine off.
Wait five minutes, then remove the
dipstick, wipe it off, fully reinsert thedipstick and withdraw it again. Then note the highest level the oil hasreached on the dipstick. It should be between the upper ("F") and lower ("L") range. HGK5004

o For good fuel economy, SAE 5W- 20 (5W-30), ILSAC GF-3 engine oilis preferred regardless of regional option and engine variation.

Responsibilty For Maintenance
It is the responsibility of the vehicle owner/driver to ensure that all routine mainte- nance services are undertaken in line with the recommendations specified in Section 5 of this manual. In addition, in order to ensure continued validity of the new vehiclewarranty and safe operation of the vehicle, non scheduled maintenance/running repairs should be undertaken at the earliest available opportunity. Under severe operating conditions, more frequent maintenance is required. Detailsof the maintenance schedule for such conditions are also given in section 5. It is recommended that all maintenance operations and repairs are entrusted to a Hyundai authorised repairer to ensure that the latest repair methods, specialised toolingand genuine Hyundai parts are used to ensure the continued reliability and safety of the vehicle.
