Your ABS (ESP) will not prevent accidents due to improper or dan- gerous driving maneuvers. Eventhough vehicle control is improved during emergency braking, always maintain a safe distance betweenyou and objects ahead. Vehicle speeds should always be reduced during extreme road conditions.The braking distance for cars equipped with an anti-lock braking system may be longer than for thosewithout it in the following road con- ditions. During these conditions the vehicleshould be driven at reduced speeds.
o Rough, gravel or snow-covered roads.
o With tire chains installed.
o Roads where the road surface is
pitted or has different surface height. The safety features of an ABS (ESP) equipped vehicle should not be tested by high speed driving or cornering. This could endanger the safety ofyourself or others.
ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM (ESP)
C310A01JM-AAT (If installed) The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system is designed to stabilize thevehicle during cornering manuevers. ESP checks where you are steering and where the vehicle is actually going.ESP applies the brakes at individual wheels and intervenes in the engine management system to stabilize thevehicle. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system is an electronic system de- signed to help the driver maintain ve- hicle control under adverse conditions.It is not a substitute for safe driving practices. C160B01A-GAT Snowy or Icy Conditions To drive your vehicle in deep snow, it may be necessary to use snow tires orto install tire chains on your tires. If snow tires are needed, it is necessary to select tires equivalent in size andtype to the original equipment tires. Failure to do so may adversely affect the safety and handling of your car.Speeding, rapid acceleration, sudden brake applications, and sharp turns are potentially very hazardous prac-tices. During deceleration, use engine braking to the fullest extent. Sudden brake applications on snowy or icyroads may cause skids to occur. You need to keep sufficient distance be- tween the vehicle in front and yourvehicle. Also, apply the brake gently. It should be noted that installing tire chains on the tire will provide a greaterdriving force, but will not prevent side skids. NOTE: Tire chains are not legal in all prov- inces. Check province laws before fitting tire chains. C160C01A-AAT Use High Quality Ethylene Gly- col Coolant Your Hyundai is delivered with high quality ethylene glycol coolant in thecooling system. It is the only type of coolant that should be used because it helps prevent corrosion in the coolingsystem, lubricates the water pump and prevents freezing. Be sure to replace or replenish your coolant in accor-dance with the maintenance schedule in Section 5. Before winter, have your coolant tested to assure that its freez-ing point is sufficient for the tempera- tures anticipated during the winter.
C160D01A-AAT Check Battery and Cables Winter puts additional burdens on the battery system. Visually inspect thebattery and cables as described in Section 6. The level of charge in your battery can be checkedby your Hyundai dealer or a service station. C160E01A-AAT Change to "Winter Weight" Oil if Necessary In some climates it is recommended that a lower viscosity "winter weight" oil be used during cold weather. SeeSection 9 for recommendations. If you aren't sure what weight oil you should use, consult your Hyundai dealer.

C160J01A-AAT Don't Let Ice and Snow Accumu- late Underneath Under some conditions, snow and ice can build up under the fenders andinterfere with the steering. When driv- ing in severe winter conditions where this may happen, you should periodi-cally check underneath the car to be sure the movement of the front wheels and the steering components is notobstructed. C160K01A-AAT Carry Emergency Equipment Depending on the severity of the weather where you drive your car, you should carry appropriate emergency equipment. Some of the items youmay want to carry include tire chains, tow straps or chains, flashlight, emer- gency flares, sand, a shovel, jumpercables, a window scraper, gloves, ground cloth, coveralls, a blanket, etc. C170A01A-AAT Pre-Trip Inspections 1. Tires: Adjust the tire inflation pressures to specification. Low tire inflation pres-sures will result in overheating and possible failure of the tires. Avoid using worn or damaged tireswhich may result in reduced traction or tire failure. NOTE: Never exceed the maximum tire in- flation pressure shown on the tires. 2. Fuel, engine coolant and en-
gine oil:
High speed travel consumes more fuel than urban motoring. Do not forget tocheck both engine coolant and engine oil. 3. Drive belt: A loose or damaged drive belt may result in overheating of the engine. C180A01A-AAT Check your lights regularly for correct operation and always keep them clean. When driving during the day in condi- tions of poor visibility, it is helpful todrive with headlights on low beam. This enables you to be seen as well as to see.

Do not remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. This can allow coolant to be blown out of the open- ing and cause serious burns.
6. If you cannot find the cause of the overheating, wait until the engine temperature has returned to nor- mal. Then, if the engine coolant has been lost, carefully add coolant tothe reservoir (page 6-10) to bring the fluid level in the reservoir up to the halfway mark.
7. Proceed with caution, keeping alert for further signs of overheating. Ifoverheating happens again, call aHyundai dealer for assistance.
CAUTION:
Serious loss of engine coolant indi-cates there is a leak in the cooling system and this should be checked as soon as possible by a Hyundaidealer. D040A01GK-GAT Temporary Spare Tire The following instructions for the tem- porary spare tire should be observed:
1. Check inflation pressure as soon as
practical after installing the spare tire, and adjust to the specified pres- sure. The tire pressure should be periodically checked and maintainedat the specified pressure while the tire is stored. 5. The temporary spare tire should not
be used on any other wheels, nor should standard tires, snow tires, wheel covers or trim rings be used with the temporary spare wheel. Ifsuch use is attempted, damage to these items or other car compo- nents may occur.
6. The temporary spare tire pressure should be checked once a monthwhile the tire is stored.

I050A02GK-GAT Tire Chains Tire chains, if necessary, should be installed on the front wheels. Be sure that the chains are installed in accor- dance with the manufacturer's instruc-tions. Refer to the following informa- tion. To minimize tire and chain wear, do not continue to use tire chains when they are no longer needed. WARNING:
o When driving on roads covered with snow or ice, drive at lessthan 30 km/h (20 mph).
o Use tire chains less than 10mm (0.39 in.) for 16" and 17" tires.
o Avoid sudden stop and turns.
o Tighten firmly to avoid contact with the verticle body, if youhave noise caused by chaws contacting the body, remove the chains for damage protection.

Snow tires should beinstalled on all four wheels; other- wise, poor handling may result. Snow tires should carry 28 kPa (4 psi) more air pressure than the pres- sure recommended for the standardtires on the tire label on the drive side center pillar outer panel, or up to the maximum pressure shown on the tiresidewall whichever is less.Do not drive faster than 120 km/h (75mph) when your car is equipped withsnow tires.

Factors including speed, roadconditions and driver steering input can all affect whether ESP will be effective in preventing a loss of control. It is stillyour responsibility to drive and corner at reasonable speeds and to leave a sufficient margin of safety.

6. The temporary spare tyre pressure should be checked once a monthwhilst the tyre is stored. SD060A1-E If a puncture occurs whilst driving the vehicle:
1. Bring the car to rest as soon as it is
safe to do so and with the minimum amount of braking required which will assist in maintaining the maxi-mum amount of control. The vehicle should be parked wherever pos- sible upon firm level ground to facili-tate wheel changing.
2. If the vehicle is creating a hazard
and the road conditions do not per-mit the wheel to be changed safely, assistance should be sought.
3. Passengers must not be allowed to remain inside the vehicle duringwheel changing. If a puncture oc- curs whilst the vehicle is on amotorway, the passengers should take refuge on the motorway em- bankment to avoid the possibility ofinjury occurring should the vehicle be struck by other motorway traffic.
4. Wheel changing should be per- formed according to the followinginstructions.
D040B01A-EAT Handling the Spare Tyre Remove the installation bolt to remove the spare tyre. To replace the spare tyrein its storage compartment, tighten the bolt firmly with your fingers until there is no more play in the spare tyre. HGK4010A
