3. Exhaust emission control
system
The Exhaust Emission Control
System is a highly effective system
which controls exhaust emissions
while maintaining good vehicle per
formance.
Vehicle modifications
• This vehicle should not be modified. Modification of your vehicle
could affect its performance, safety
or durability and may even violate
governmental safety and emis
sions regulations.
In addition, damage or perform
ance problems resulting from any
modification may not be covered
under warranty.
• If you use unauthorized electronic devices, it may cause the vehicle to
operate abnormally, wire damage,
battery discharge and fire. For your
safety, do not use unauthorized
electronic devices.
Engine exhaust gas precautions
(carbon monoxide)
• Carbon monoxide can be presentwith other exhaust fumes.
Therefore, if you smell exhaust
fumes of any kind inside your vehi
cle, have it inspected and repaired
immediately. If you ever suspect
exhaust fumes are coming into
your vehicle, drive it only with all
the windows fully open. Have your
vehicle checked and repaired
immediately. • Do not operate the engine in con
fined or closed areas (such as
garages) any more than what is
necessary to move the vehicle in or
out of the area.
• When the vehicle is stopped in an open area for more than a short
time with the engine running,
adjust the ventilation system (as
needed) to draw outside air into the
vehicle.
• Never sit in a parked or stopped vehicle for any extended time with
the engine running.
• When the engine stalls or fails to start, excessive attempts to restart
the engine may cause damage to
the emission control system.
Exhaust
Engine exhaust gases contain
carbon monoxide (CO). Though
colorless and odorless, it is dan
gerous and could be lethal if
inhaled. Follow the instructions on
this page to avoid CO poisoning.
WARNING

Operating precautions for catalytic
converters (if equipped)
Your vehicle is equipped with a cat
alytic conver ter emission control
device.
Therefore, the following precautions
must be observed:
• Use only UNLEADED FUEL forGasoline engine.
• Do not operate the vehicle when there are signs of engine malfunc
tion, such as misfire or a noticeable
loss of performance.
• Do not misuse or abuse the engine. Examples of misuse are
coasting with the ignition off and
descending steep grades in gear
with the ignition off.
• Do not operate the engine at high idle speed for extended periods (5
minutes or more).
• Do not modify or tamper with any part of the engine or emission con
trol system. All inspections and
adjustments must be made by an
authorized HYUNDAI dealer. • Avoid driving with a extremely low
fuel level. Running out of fuel could
cause the engine to misfire, dam
aging the catalytic converter.
Failure to observe these precautions
could result in damage to the catalyt
ic converter and to your vehicle.
Additionally, such actions could void
your warranties.
Fire
•A hot exhaust system can ignite
flammable items under your
vehicle. Do not park, idle, or
drive the vehicle over or near
flammable objects, such as
grass, vegetation, paper,
leaves, etc.
•The exhaust system and catalyt
ic system are very hot while the
engine is running or immediate
ly after the engine is turned off.
Keep away from the exhaust
system and catalytic, you may
get burned. Also, do not remove
the heat sink around the
exhaust system, do not seal the
bottom of the vehicle or do not
coat the vehicle for corrosion
control. It may present a fire risk
under certain conditions.

•It is permissible to add 3 psi to the standard tire pressure specification if colder temperatures are expected soon.
Tires typically loose 1 psi (7 kPa) for every 7°C temperature drop. If extreme temperature variations are expected,
recheck your tire pressure as necessary to keep them properly inflated.
•An air pressure generally decreases, as you drive up to a highaltitude area above sea level. Thus, if you plan to
drive a highaltitude area, check the tire pressures in advance. If necessary, inflate them to a proper level. (Air infla
tion per altitude : +10 kPa/1 km)

Recommended SAE viscosity
number
Engine oil viscosity (thickness) has
an effect on fuel economy and cold
weather operating (engine start and
engine oil flowability). Lower viscosi
ty engine oils can provide better fuel
economy and cold weather perform
ance, however, higher viscosity
engine oils are required for satisfac
tory lubrication in hot weather. Using
oils of any viscosity other than those
recommended could result in engine
damage. When choosing an oil, consider the
range of temperature your vehicle
will be operated in before the next oil
change.
Proceed to select the recommended
oil viscosity from the chart.
Always be sure to clean the area
around any filler plug, drain plug,
or dipstick before checking or
draining any lubricant. This is
especially important in dusty or
sandy areas and when the vehicle
is used on unpaved roads.
Cleaning the plug and dipstick
areas will prevent dirt and grit from
entering the engine and other
mechanisms that could be dam
aged.

The vehicle identification number
(VIN) is the number used in register
ing your car and in all legal matters
pertaining to its ownership, etc.
The number is punched on the floor
under the front right seat. To check
the number, pull out the slit part of
carpet. The VIN is also on a plate attached
to the top of the dashboard.
The number on the plate can easily
be seen through the windshield from
outside.
The vehicle cer tification label
attached on the driver’s (or front pas
senger’s) side center pillar gives the
vehicle identification number (VIN).
