- Vehicle with automatic transaxle
Button Position Action Notes
ON Press the Engine Start/Stop button while it
is in the ACC position without depressing
the brake pedal.
The warning lights can be checked before the engine is started. If you leave the Engine Start/Stop button in
the ON position for more than one hour, the
battery power will turn off automatically to
prevent the battery from discharging.
Blue indicator
START
To start the engine, depress the brake pedal
and press the Engine Start/Stop button with
the shift lever in the P (Park) or in the N
(Neutral) position.
For your safety, start the engine with the
shift lever in the P (Park) position. If you press the Engine Start/Stop button
without depressing the brake pedal, the
engine does not start and the Engine
Start/Stop button changes as follows:

✽NOTICE
• The engine will start by pressing
the Engine Start/Stop button, only
when the smart key is in the vehi-
cle.
• Even if the smart key is in the vehicle, if it is far away from the
driver, the engine may not start.
• When the Engine Start/Stop but- ton is in the ACC or ON position,
if any door is open, the system
checks for the smart key. If the
smart key is not in the vehicle, the
" " indicator will blink, and if
all doors are closed, the chime will
also sound for about 5 seconds.
The indicator will turn off while
the vehicle is moving. Keep the
smart key in the vehicle when
using the ACC position or if the
vehicle engine is ON.
Vehicle with manual transaxle:
1.Always carry the smart key with
you.
2.Make sure the parking brake is applied.
3.Make sure the shift lever is in neu- tral.
4.Depress the clutch and brake ped- als.
5.Press the Engine Start/Stop but- ton.
WARNING
Always wear appropriateshoes when operating your
vehicle. Unsuitable shoes,
such as high heels, ski boots,
sandals, flip-flops, etc., may
interfere with your ability to
use the brake, accelerator and
clutch pedals.
Do not start the vehicle with the accelerator pedal depressed.
The vehicle can move and lead
to an accident.
Wait until the engine rpm is normal. The vehicle may sud-
denly move if the brake pedal
is released when the rpm is
high.

Start driving at moderate engine
speeds. (Steep accelerating and
decelerating should be avoided.)
• Always start the vehicle with your foot on the brake pedal. Do not
depress the accelerator while
starting the vehicle. Do not race
the engine while warming it up.
CAUTION
To prevent damage to the vehi-
cle:
If the engine stalls while you are in motion, do not attemptto move the shift lever to the P(Park) position.
If traffic and road conditionspermit, you may put the shiftlever in the N (Neutral) posi-tion while the vehicle is stillmoving and press the EngineStart/Stop button in anattempt to restart the engine.
Do not push or tow your vehi- cle to start the engine.
CAUTION
To prevent damage to the vehi-cle:
Do not press the EngineStart/Stop button for more than10 seconds except when thestop lamp fuse is blown.
When the stop lamp fuse isblown, you can't start the enginenormally. Replace the fuse witha new one. If you are not able toreplace the fuse, you can startthe engine by pressing andholding the Engine Start/Stopbutton for 10 seconds with theEngine Start/Stop button in theACC position.
For your safety always depressthe brake and/or clutch pedalbefore starting the engine.

In Sports Mode, moving the shift
lever backwards and forwards will
allow you to select the desired range
of gears for the current driving condi-
tions.
+ (Up) : Push the lever forward onceto shift up one gear.
- (Down) : Pull the lever backwards once to shift down one
gear.
✽ ✽NOTICE
• Only the six forward gears can be
selected. To reverse or park the
vehicle, move the shift lever to the
R (Reverse) or P (Park) position as
required.
• Downshifts are made automatical- ly when the vehicle slows down.
When the vehicle stops, 1st gear is
automatically selected.
• When the engine rpm approaches the red zone the transaxle will
upshift automatically. (Continued)(Continued)
• If the driver presses the lever to
+ (Up) or - (Down) position, the
transaxle may not make the
requested gear change if the next
gear is outside of the allowable
engine rpm range. The driver
must execute upshifts in accor-
dance with road conditions, taking
care to keep the engine rpms
below the red zone.
• When accelerating from a stop on a slippery road, push the shift
lever forward into the + (Up) posi-
tion. This causes the transaxle to
shift into the 2nd gear which is
better for smooth driving on a
slippery road. Push the shift lever
to the - (Down) side to shift back to
the 1st gear.
Shift-lock system
For your safety, the automatic
transaxle has a shift-lock system
which prevents shifting the transaxle
from P (Park) into R (Reverse)
unless the brake pedal is depressed.
To shift the transaxle from P (Park)
into R (Reverse):
1.Depress and hold the brake pedal.
2.Start the engine or place the igni-
tion switch in the ON position.
3.Move the shift lever.

Ignition key interlock system
The ignition key cannot be removed
unless the shift lever is in the P
(Park) position.
Parking
Always come to a complete stop and
continue to depress the brake pedal.
Move the shift lever into the P (Park)
position, apply the parking brake,
and place the ignition switch in the
LOCK/OFF position. Take the Key
with you when exiting the vehicle.
Good driving practices
Never move the shift lever from P(Park) or N (Neutral) to any other
position with the accelerator pedal
depressed.
Never move the shift lever into P (Park) when the vehicle is in
motion.
Be sure the vehicle is completely
stopped before you attempt to shift
into R (Reverse) or D (Drive).
Do not move the shift lever to N (Neutral) when driving. Doing so
may result in an accident because
of a loss of engine braking and the
transaxle could be damaged.
Do not drive with your foot resting on the brake pedal. Even light, but
consistent pedal pressure can
result in the brakes overheating,
brake wear and possibly even
brake failure.
When driving in sports mode, slow down before shifting to a lower gear.
Otherwise, the lower gear may not
be engaged if the engine RPM is
outside of the allowable range.
WARNING
When you stay in the vehicle
with the engine running, be
careful not to depress the accel-
erator pedal for a long period of
time. The engine or exhaust
system may overheat and start
a fire.
The exhaust gas and the
exhaust system are very hot.
Keep away from the exhaust
system components.
Do not stop or park over flam-
mable materials, such as dry
grass, paper or leaves. They
may ignite and cause a fire.

Check the ParkingBrake Warning Light by
placing the ignition
switch to the ON posi-
tion (do not start the
engine).
This light will be illuminated when the
parking brake is applied with the igni-
tion switch in the START or ON posi-
tion.
Before driving, be sure the parking
brake is released and the Brake
Warning Light is OFF.
If the Parking Brake Warning Light
remains on after the parking brake is
released while engine is running,
there may be a malfunction in the
brake system. Immediate attention is
necessary.
If at all possible, cease driving the
vehicle immediately. If that is not pos-
sible, use extreme caution while
operating the vehicle and only con-
tinue to drive the vehicle until you
can reach a safe location.
WARNING
Whenever leaving the vehicle or parking, always come to a
complete stop and continue
to depress the brake pedal.
Move the shift lever into the
1st gear (for manual transaxle
vehicle) or P (Park, for auto-
matic transaxle vehicle) posi-
tion, then apply the parking
brake, and place the ignition
switch in the LOCK/OFF posi-
tion.
Vehicles with the parking
brake not fully engaged are at
risk for moving inadvertently
and causing injury to yourself
or others.
NEVER allow anyone who is unfamiliar with the vehicle to
touch the parking brake. If the
parking brake is released
unintentionally, serious injury
may occur.
Only release the parking brake when you are seated
inside the vehicle with your
foot firmly on the brake pedal.
CAUTION
Do not apply the accelerator pedal while the parking brakeis engaged. If you depress theaccelerator pedal with theparking brake engaged, warn-ing will sound. Damage to theparking brake may occur.
Driving with the parking brake on can overheat the brakingsystem and cause prematurewear or damage to brakeparts. Make sure the parkingbrake is released and theBrake Warning Light is offbefore driving.

ABS cannot prevent a loss of stabili-
ty. Always steer moderately when
braking hard. Severe or sharp steer-
ing wheel movement can still cause
your vehicle to veer into oncoming
traffic or off the road.
On loose or uneven road surfaces,
operation of the anti-lock brake sys-
tem may result in a longer stopping
distance than for vehicles equipped
with a conventional brake system.
The ABS warning light ( ) will stay
on for several seconds after the igni-
tion switch is in the ON position.
During that time, the ABS will go
through self-diagnosis and the light
will go off if everything is normal. If
the light stays on, you may have a
problem with your ABS. Contact an
authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon
as possible.✽ ✽NOTICE
When you jump start your vehicle
because of a drained battery, the
ABS warning light ( ) may turn
on at the same time. This happens
because of the low battery voltage. It
does not mean your ABS is malfunc-
tioning. Have the battery recharged
before driving the vehicle.WARNING
If the ABS warning light ( ) is
on and stays on, you may have
a problem with the ABS. Your
power brakes will work normal-
ly. To reduce the risk of serious
injury or death, contact your
HYUNDAI dealer as soon as
possible.
CAUTION
When you drive on a road hav-
ing poor traction, such as an icyroad, and apply your brakescontinuously, the ABS will beactive continuously and theABS warning light ( ) mayilluminate. Pull your car over toa safe place and turn the engineoff.
Restart the engine. If the ABSwarning light is off, then yourABS system is normal.Otherwise, you may have aproblem with your ABS system.Contact an authorized HYUNDAIdealer as soon as possible.

VSM OFF condition
To cancel VSM operation, press the
ESC OFF button. ESC OFF indicator
light ( ) will illuminate.
To turn on VSM, press the ESC OFF
button again. The ESC OFF indicator
light will go out.Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC)
(if equipped)
The Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC)
helps prevent the vehicle from rolling
backwards when starting a vehicle
from a stop on a hill. The system
operates the brakes automatically for
approximately 2 seconds and releas-
es the brake when the accelerator
pedal is depressed or after 2 sec-
onds.
✽ ✽NOTICE
• The HAC does not operate when
the shift lever is in P (Park) or N
(Neutral)
• The HAC activates even though the ESC (Electronic Stability
Control) is off but does not acti-
vate when the ESC has malfunc-
tioned.
WARNING
If ESC indicator light ( ) or
EPS warning light ( ) stays
on, your vehicle may have a
malfunction with the VSM sys-
tem. When the warning light illu-
minates have the vehicle
checked by an authorized
HYUNDAI dealer as soon as
possible.
CAUTION
Driving with varying tire or
wheel sizes may cause the ESCsystem to malfunction. Whenreplacing tires, make sure theyare the same size as your origi-nal tires for this vehicle.
WARNING
Always be ready to depress the
accelerator pedal when starting
off on a incline. The HAC acti-
vates only for approximately 2
seconds.

If the engine stalls while driving
Reduce your speed gradually,keeping a straight line. Move cau-
tiously off the road to a safe place.
Turn on your hazard warning flash- er.
Try to start the engine again. If your vehicle will not start, contact an
authorized HYUNDAI dealer or
seek other qualified assistance.
If the engine stalls at a cross-
road or crossing
If the engine stalls at a crossroad or
crossing, if safe to do so, move the
shift lever to the N (Neutral) position
and then push the vehicle to a safe
location.
If you have a flat tire while
driving
If a tire goes flat while you are driv-
ing:
Take your foot off the acceleratorpedal and let the vehicle slow
down while driving straight ahead.
Do not apply the brakes immedi-
ately or attempt to pull off the road
as this may cause loss of vehicle
control resulting in an accident.
When the vehicle has slowed to
such a speed that it is safe to do
so, brake carefully and pull off the
road. Drive off the road as far as
possible and park on firm, level
ground. If you are on a divided
highway, do not park in the median
area between the two traffic lanes. When the vehicle is stopped, press
the hazard warning flasher button,
move the shift lever into P (Park,
for automatic transaxle vehicle) or
neutral (for manual transaxle vehi-
cle), apply the parking brake, and
place the ignition switch in the
LOCK/OFF position.
Have all passengers get out of the vehicle. Be sure they all get out on
the side of the vehicle that is away
from traffic.
When changing a flat tire, follow the instructions provided later in
this chapter.
