6CHECKING THE ENGINE OIL

Recommended Oil Gasoline Engine Engine oil is essential to the perfor- mance and service of the engine. It is suggested that you check the oil level at least once a week in normal useand more often if you are on a trip or driving in severe conditions. The engine oil quality should meet the following classification: API SJ, SL or ABOVE, ILSAC GF-3 or ABOVE G030B01JMNOTE:
o For good fuel economy, SAE 5W- 20 (5W-30), ILSAC GF-3 engine oilis preferred regardless of regional option and engine variation.
o If SAE 5W-20, ILSAC GF-3 engine oil is not available, secondaryrecommended engine oil for cor- responding temperature rangecan be used.

The engine oil quality should meet

NOTE: SAE 0W-30 oil is for extra cold zone and to be restricted by driving con-dition and dealing area. (Especially, not recommended for sustained high loaded and high speed operation.)

To Check the Oil Level

Before checking the oil, warm up the
engine to normal operating tempera- ture and be sure your vehicle is parkedon level ground. Turn the engine off. G030C02FC

!WARNING:
Be very careful not to touch the radiator hose when checking the engine oil as it may be hot enough to burn you.
Wait about five minutes, then removethe dipstick, wipe it off, fully reinsertthe dipstick and withdraw it again. Then note the highest level the oil has reached on the dipstick. It should bebetween the upper "F" and lower "L" range.

ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION Function of Engine Oil
Engine oil has the primary function of
lubricating and cooling the inside of the engine. Engine oil consumption
It is normal that an engine should
consume some engine oil while nor- mal driving. The cause of oil con- sumption in a normal engine are asfollows;
o Engine oil is used to lubricate pis- tons, piston rings and cylinders. A thin film of oil is left on the cylinder wall when a piston moves downwards in the cylinder. High negative pressure generated dur-ing engine operation sucks some of the oil into the combustion cham- ber.This oil with some oil of the cylin-der wall is burned by the high tem-perature combustion gases during the combustion process.
1. Remove the oil filler cap by turning
it counter-clockwise.
2. Add oil, then check the level again. Do not overfill.
3. Replace the cap by turning it clock- wise.
The distance between the "F" and "L" marks is equal to about 1 liter(GasolineEngine)/1.2 liter(Diesel Engine) of oil.

! CAUTION:
Slowly pour the recommended oil using by a funnel. Do not overfill not to damage engine.
WARNING:

o The engine oil consumption is strongly effected by the viscosity and quality of oil, engine rpm and driving condition etc. The engine oil is more consumed under severedriving conditions such as high speeds and frequent acceleration and deceleration than normal driv-ing condition.CHANGING THE OIL AND FILTER

The engine oil and filter should be
changed at those intervals specified in the maintenance schedule in Sec-tion 5. If the vehicle is being driven in severe conditions, more frequent oil and filter changes are required. G040A03EThe procedure for changing the oil andfilter is as follows:
1. Park the vehicle on level ground and set the parking brake. Start the engine and let it warm up until the needle on the coolant temperaturegauge moves above the lowest mark. Turn the engine off and place the gear selector lever in "P" (auto-matic) or reverse gear (manual transaxle).
2. Open the hood and remove the engine oil filler cap.
3. Slide underneath the car and loosen the oil pan drain plug by turning itcounterclockwise with a wrench of the proper size. Be sure that adrain pan is in position to catch the oil as it drains out, then remove the drain plug.
WARNING:
Be very careful when draining theengine oil as it may be hot enough to burn you!

CAUTION:
Slowly pour the recommended oil into a funnel. Do not overfill not todamage engine.

NOTE: Always dispose of used engine oil in an environmentally acceptablemanner. It is suggested that it be placed in a sealed container and taken to a service station for maybereclaimation. Do not pour the oil on the ground or put it in with the household trash.
Be sure that the mounting surfaceon the engine is clean and that theold gasket is removed completely. Lubricate the new gasket on the filter with clean engine oil beforeinstallation.
7. Remove the engine oil level dip- stick.
8. Refill the crankcase with the rec-
ommended engine oil. Refer tothe specification in chapter 9 for engine oil capacity.

9. Start the engine and check to be sure no oil is leaking from the drain plug or oil filter.
10.Shut off the engine and recheck the oil level. WARNING:
Used motor oil may cause irrita-
tion or cancer of the skin if left in contact with the skin for prolongedperiods of time. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water as soon as possible afterhandling used oil.
4. When the oil has stopped draining,
replace the drain plug using a newgasket and retighten by turning it clockwise. Oil pan drain plug tightening torque :

5. Remove the oil filter by turning it counterclockwise with a oil filter wrench of the proper size. A cer-tain amount of oil will come out when you remove the filter. So be sure to have your drain pan inplace underneath it.
6. Install a new oil filter in accordance with the instructions on the cartonor on the filter itself. Do not over- tighten. Oil filter tightening torque: 1.2~1.6kgf.m

The engine oil and filter should be changed at those intervals specifiedin the maintenance schedule in Sec- tion 5. If the car is being driven in severe conditions, more frequent oiland filter changes are required. The procedure for changing the oil and filter is as follows:
1. Park the car on level ground and set the parking brake. Start the engine and let it warm up until the needle on the coolant temperature gauge moves above the lowestmark.

Turn the engine off and place the gear selector lever in "P" (auto-matic) or reverse gear (manual transaxle).
2. Open the hood and remove the engine oil level dipstick.
3. Loosen the oil filter upper cap with a proper tool from the oil filter housing until an O-ring is seen.Then, drain the oil completely. 4. Remove the engine oil filler cap.
5. Slide underneath the car and
loosen the oil pan drain plug by turning it counterclockwise oil pan with a wrench of the proper size. Be sure that a drain pan is inposition to catch the oil as it drains out, then remove the drain plug.
WARNING:
Be very careful when draining the engine oil as it may be hot enoughto burn you!
6. When the oil has stopped draining, replace the drain plug using a new gasket and retighten by turning it clockwise.
Oil pan drain plug tightening torque : 3.5 ~ 4.5 kgf.m
7. Pull out the oil filter upper cap with element from the oil filter housing. Using a clean cloth, remove any dirt or oil accumulated around the oil filter housing.
! CAUTION:
Slowly loosen the oil filter upper cap not to overflow the oil.

CHECKING AND CHANGING THE ENGINE COOLANT

WARNING:
Do not remove the radiator cap
when the engine is hot. When the engine is hot, the engine coolant is under pressure and may eruptthrough the opening if the cap is removed. You could be seriously burned if you do not observe thisprecaution. Do not remove the radiator cap until the radiator is cool to the touch.
10. Start the engine and check to be
sure no oil is leaking from thedrain plug or oil filter.
11.Shut off the engine and recheck
the oil level.
NOTE:
o It is recommended that the en- gine oil and filter should be changed by an authorized Hyundai dealer.
o Always dispose of used engine oil in an environmentally accept-able manner. It is suggested that it be placed in a sealed container and taken to a service station formaybe reclaimation. Do not pour the oil on the ground or put it into the household trash.

ring, new oil filter element and newO-ring to upper cap, install the up- per cap to oil filter housing and retighten by turning it clockwise.Do not over-tighten. Tightening torque : 2.5 kgf.m
CAUTION:
Don't use old oil filter upper cap O-ring and centerpipe O-ring
9. Refill the crankcase with the rec- ommended engine oil. Refer to the specification in chapter 9 for engine oil capacity.

Slowly pour the recommended oilby into a funnel. Do not overfill not to damage the engine.

The engine coolant should be compat-
ible with aluminum engine parts. Addi- tional corrosion inhibitors or additives should not be used. The cooling sys- tem must be maintained with the cor-rect concentration and type of engine coolant to prevent freezing and corro- sion. Never allow the concentration ofantifreeze to exceed the 60% level or go below the 35% level, or damage to the cooling system may result. To Change the Coolant
The coolant should be changed at those intervals specified in the ve- hicle maintenance schedule in Sec- tion 5.
! CAUTION:
Engine coolant can damage the finish of your car. If you spill en-gine coolant on the car, wash it off thoroughly with clean water.
1. Park the car on level ground, set the parking brake and remove the radia- tor cap when cool.
2. Be sure your drain receptacle is in
place. Open the drain cock on theradiator. Allow all the engine cool- ant to drain from the cooling sys- tem, then securely close the draincock.
3. Check Section 9 for the capacity of the cooling system in your car.Then, following the manufacturer's directions on the engine coolant container, add the appropriatequantity of coolant to the radiator.

4. Turn the radiator cap counterclock-wise without pressing down on it, until it stops. This relieves any pres- sure remaining in the cooling sys-tem. And remove the radiator cap by pushing down and turning coun- terclockwise.Fill the radiator with clean deminer-alized or distilled water. Continueto add clean demineralized or dis- tilled water in small quantities until the fluid level stays up in the radia-tor neck.
WARNING:
Remove the radiator cap when theradiator is cool.
The level of the coolant should bebetween the "L" and "F" lines on thereservoir when the engine is cold. If the level is below the "L" mark, add engine coolant to bring it up between"L" and "F". If the level is low, inspect for coolant leaks and recheck the fluid level frequently. If the level dropsagain, visit your Hyundai dealer for an inspection and diagnosis of the rea- son.

5. Start the engine, top off the radiator with water and then add engine coolant to the reservoir until the level is between "L" and "F".
6. Replace the radiator and reservoir caps and check to be sure the draincocks are fully closed and not leak- ing.
!WARNING:
The cooling fan is controlled by
engine coolant temperature and may sometimes operate even when theengine is not running. Use extreme caution when working near the blades of the cooling fan so thatyou are not injured by a rotating fan blade. As the engine coolant tem- perature decreases, the fan will au-tomatically shut off. This is a nor- mal condition.
