o Automotive fuels are flammable/ explosive materials. When refuel- ing, please note the followingguidelines carefully. Failure to follow these guidelines may re- sult in severe personal injury, se-vere burns or death by fire or explosion.
- Before refueling always note the
location of the Emergency Fuel Shut-Off, if available, at the fuel station facility.
- Before touching the fuel nozzle or fuel filler cap, you shouldeliminate potentially dangerousstatic electricity discharge by touching another metal part of the front of the vehicle, a safedistance away from the fuel filler neck, nozzle, or other fuel source.
- Do not get back into a vehicle once you have begun refueling.Do not touch, rub or slide againstany item or fabric (polyester, satin, nylon, etc.) capable of pro- ducing static electricity. Staticelectricity discharge can ignite fuel vapors resulting in explo sion.If you must re-enter the vehicle, you should once again elimi-nate potentially dangerous static electricity discharge by touch- ing a metal part of the vehicle,away from the fuel filler neck, nozzle or other fuel source.
- When using a portable fuel con- tainer be sure to place the con-tainer on the ground prior to refueling. Static electricity dis-charge from the container can ignite fuel vapors causing a fire. Once refueling has begun, con-tact with the vehicle should be maintained until the filling is complete. Use only portable fuelcontainers designed to carry and store fuel.
- Do not use cellular phones
around a fuel station or whilstrefueling any vehicle. Electric current and/or electronic inter-ference from cellular phones can potentially ignite fuel vapors causing a fire. If you must useyour cellular phone use it in a place away from the fuel station.
- When refueling always shut theengine off. Sparks produced by electrical components related to the engine can ignite fuel va- pors causing a fire. Always in-sure that the engine is OFF be- fore and during refueling. Once refueling is complete, check tomake sure the fuel filler cap and door are securely closed, before starting the engine.
- Do not light any fire around a fuel station. DO NOT use matchesor a lighter and DO NOT SMOKEor leave a lit cigarette in your vehicle whilst at a gas station especially during refueling.Automotive fuel is highly flam- mable and can, when ignited, result in explosion by flames.
- If a fire breaks out during refuel- ing, leave the vicinity of the ve-hicle, and immediately contactthe manager of the fuel station or contact the police and local fire department. Follow anysafety instructions they provide.

2. Transfer shift knob operation By turning the transfer shift knob(4H, 4L), both axles of the vehicle are rigidlyconnected with each other. This im- proves the traction characteristics.

Turn the transfer shift knob from the 2H mode to the 4H mode at speed below 50mph (80 km/h). It is not nec- essary to depress the clutch pedal(Manual Transmission) or put the shift lever into "N(neutral)" position (Auto- matic Transmission). Perform thisoperation when driving straight. 4H

CAUTION:
Do not select 4WD (4H or 4L) modeon dry paved roads. Especially on dry highway, never select the 4WD mode.Four-wheel driving on dry paved roads for a long period will increase the fuel consumption with possiblenoise generation and early tyre wear. In addition, axle gear oil tem- perature increases with possibledriving system part wear.

o The driving posture should be more
upright; adjust the seat to a good position for easy steering and pedal operation.
o Be sure to wear the seat belt.
o Drive carefully when off the road and avoid dangerous areas.
o 4WD has higher ground clearance and a narrower track to make them capable of performing in a wide vari- ety of off road applications. Specificdesign characteristics give them a higher centre of gravity than ordinary cars. An advantage of the higherground clearance is a better view of the road allowing you to anticipate problems. They are not designed forcornering at the same speeds as conventional 2-wheel drive vehicles any more than low-slung sports carsare designed to perform satisfacto- rily under off-road conditions. If at all possible, avoid sharp turns or abruptmaneuvers. As with other vehicles of this type, failure to operate this vehicle correctly may result in lossof control or vehicle rollover. o Do not grip the inside or spokes of
the steering wheel when driving off-road. The steering wheel could jerk and injure your hands. Always firmly hold the outer steering wheel whenyou are driving off-road.
o Drive at lower speeds in strong cross-
winds. Because of your vehicle’shigh centre of gravity, its stability will be affected in crosswinds. Slower speeds ensure better vehicle con-trol.
o Check your brake condition once
you are out of mud or water. Pressthe brake several times as you move slowly until your feel normal braking forces return.
o Four-wheel driving on flat and normal roads can result in a severe bindingcondition when turning the steeringwheel.
Driving on dry paved road and highway Select the 2H(2WD) to drive on dry paved roads. Especially on dry high- way, never select the 4H or 4L(4WD).

(1) Be sure to wear the seat belt.
(2) Drive at lower speeds in strong
crosswinds. Because of your vehicle's high centre of gravity, its stability will be affected in cross-winds. Slower speeds ensure bet- ter vehicle control.
(3) Check the brake condition after driving in wet or muddy conditions.Press the brake several times as you move slowly until you feel nor-mal braking forces return.
(4) Do not drive the vehicle through
water. (i.e. streams, rivers, lakes,etc.)
(5) The stopping distance of the full-
time 4WD vehicle differs very littlefrom that of the 2WD vehicle. When driving on a snow-covered road or a slippery, muddy surface,make sure that you keep a suffi- cient distance between your ve- hicle and the one ahead of you.
AUTO Mode Full power delivered to front and rear axles for increase traction. Use this mode for normal on-road operatingconditions such as dry road surfaces, wet pavement, snow-covered roads and/or off-road. LOW Mode Full power to both axles, including a lower gear ratio for low-speed applica-tions that require extra power such as dry road surfaces, wet pavement, snow-covered roads and/or off-road.Especially when increased drive power is required. "LOW" mode is not recommended ondry pavement. The 4WD LOW indicator light ( ) will be turned on to remind you that youare in the LOW mode.

Driving in Water Select the LOW mode and drive through slowly. The maximum advisable wading depthis approximately 15.7 in.(40cm). Before driving through water, such as when crossing shallow streams, firstcheck the depth of the water and the bottom of the river bed for firmness. Drive slowly at the speed of 3mph (5km/h) and avoid deep water. Take all necessary safety measures to ensure that water damage to the engineor other vehicle parts does not occur.
o In rare cases when it's unavoidable
that a 4WD vehicle is to be inspectedfor speedometer test on 2WD roll tester, the following procedures need to be strictly adhered to. Driving on dry paved road and highway Select the AUTO to drive on dry paved roads. Especially on dry highway, neverselect the LOW. Driving on snowy or icy roads Select the AUTO or LOW in accor- dance with the road conditions, and then gradually depress the accelerator pedal for a smooth start. Driving on sandy or muddy roads Select the LOW and then gradually depress the accelerator pedal for a smooth start. Keep the pressure on the accelerator pedal constant as pos-sible, and drive at low speed. Climbing sharp grades Select the LOW to maximize use the engine torque. Descending sharp grades Select the LOW, use the engine brake and descend slowly.

WARNING:
Keep away from the front of the ve- hicle whilst inspecting. This is very dangerous as the vehicle can jumpforward and cause serious injury or death.
(9) When using tyre chains, be sure to install the chains on all wheels.
(10) If the front or rear wheels get stuck in the mud, do not spin them reck- lessly. The 4WD system could be damaged.

o Apply the parking brake only when the vehicle is at rest.
o Since the power assistance pro- vided by the brake servo is derived from the engine, coasting with theengine turned off or towing of the vehicle with the engine turned off will result in greatly increased pedalpressures being required to stop the vehicle.
o Do not hold the vehicle on the up- grade with the accelerator pedal.This can cause the transmission to overheat. Always use the brakepedal or parking brake.
o Use caution when parking on a hill.
Engage the parking brake and placethe gear selector lever in "P" (auto- matic transaxle) or in first or reverse gear (manual transaxle). If your caris facing downhill, turn the front wheels into the curb to help keep the car from rolling. If your car is facinguphill, turn the front wheels away from the curb to help keep the car from rolling. If there is no curb or if itis required by other conditions to keep the car from rolling, block the wheels.DRIVING FOR ECONOMY
C140A02A-EAT You can save fuel and get more miles from your car if you follow these sug-gestions:
o Drive smoothly. Accelerate at a moderate rate. Don't make "jack- rabbit" starts or full-throttle shifts and maintain a steady cruising speed. Don't race between stoplights. Try to adjust your speed to that of the other traffic so you don't have to change speeds unnecessarily. Avoid heavy traffic whenever possible. Always maintain a safe distance from other vehicles so you can avoid unneces- sary braking. This also reduces brake wear.
o Drive at a moderate speed. The faster you drive, the more fuel your car uses. Driving at a moderate speed, especially on the motorway, is one of the most effective ways to reduce fuel consumption.
o Don't "ride" the brake or clutch pedal. This can increase fuel consumption and also increase wear on these com- ponents. In addition, driving with your foot resting on the brake pedal may cause the brakes to overheat, which reduces their effectiveness and may lead to more serious consequences. o Take care of your tyres. Keep them
inflated to the recommended pres- sure. Incorrect inflation, either too much or too little, results in unnec- essary tyre wear. Check the tyrepressures at least once a month.
o Be sure that the wheels are aligned
correctly. Improper alignment canresult from hitting curbs or driving too fast over irregular surfaces. Poor alignment causes faster tyre wearand may also result in other prob- lems as well as greater fuel con- sumption.
o Keep your car in good condition. For better fuel economy and reducedmaintenance costs, maintain yourcar in accordance with the mainte- nance schedule in Section 5. If you drive your car in severe conditions,more frequent maintenance is re- quired (see Section 5 for details).
o Keep your car clean. For maximum service, your Hyundai should bekept clean and free of corrosive materials. It is especially importantthat mud, dirt, ice, etc. not be al- lowed to accumulate on the under- side of the car. This extra weight canresult in increased fuel consumption and also contribute to corrosion.

ZC170B1-E Electrical System Winter conditions impose severe de- mands upon vehicle electrical systems, particularly the charging circuit. The battery condition and performance along with the alternator performance and drive belt condition should bechecked prior to the onset of winter.WINTER DRIVING
DC170A1-E The onset of winter conditions subject motor vehicles to greater operating demands. Therefore, the following suggestions will assist in maintainingpeak performance and reliability dur- ing these periods:
o Travel lightly. Don't carry unneces-
sary weight in your car. Weight re- duces fuel economy.
o Don't let the engine idle longer than
necessary. If you are waiting (andnot in traffic), turn off your engine and restart only when you're ready to go.
o Remember, your Hyundai does not require extended warm-up. After theengine has started, allow the engineto run for 10 to 20 seconds prior to placing the vehicle in gear. In very cold weather, however, give yourengine a slightly longer warm-up pe- riod.
o Don't "labour" or "over-rev" the en- gine. Labouring is driving too slowlyin too high a gear resulting in the vehicle kangarooing. If this happens,shift to a lower gear. Over-revving is racing the engine beyond its safe limit. This can be avoided by shiftingat the recommended speeds.
o Use your air conditioning sparingly.
The air conditioning system is oper-ated by engine power so your fuel economy is reduced when you use it.SMOOTH CORNERING
C150A01A-EAT Avoid braking or gear changing in cor- ners, especially when roads are wet. Ideally, corners should always be taken under gentle acceleration. If you followthese suggestions, tyre wear will be held to a minimum.

CAUTION:
If overheating should occur when towing, (temperature gauge reads near red zone), taking the following action may reduce or eliminate theproblem.
1. Turn off the air conditioner.
2. Reduce highway speed.
3. Select a lower gear when going uphill.
4. Whilst in stop and go traffic, place the gear selector in park or neu- tral and idle the engine at a higherspeed.
14. When going down a hill, shift into a
lower gear and use the engine brak-ing effect. When climbing a long grade, down- shift the transmission to a lowergear and reduce speed to reduce chances of engine overloading and/ or overheating.
15.If you have to stop whilst going uphill, do not hold the vehicle inplace by pressing on the accelera-tor. This can cause the automatic transmission to overheat. Use the parking brake or footbrake.
NOTE: When towing, check transmission fluid more frequently.
8. When parking your car and trailer,
especially on a hill, be sure to follow all the normal precautions. Turn your front wheels into the curb, set the parking brake firmly, and putthe transmission in 1st or Reverse (manual) or Park (automatic). In addition, we advise the use of wheelchocks at each of the trailer's tyres.
9. If the trailer has electric brakes,
start your vehicle and trailer mov-ing, and then apply the trailer brake controller by hand to be sure the brakes are working. This lets youcheck your electrical connection at the same time.
10.During your trip, check occasion- ally to be sure that the load issecure, and that the lights and any trailer brakes are still working.
11.Avoid jerky starts, sudden accel- eration or sudden stops.
12.Avoid sharp turns and rapid lane changes.
13.Avoid holding the brake pedal down
too long or too frequently. This couldcause the brakes to overheat, re- sulting in reduced braking efficiency.

3 IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

1. Ensure that the booster battery is 12
volt type. If the booster battery is installed in another vehicle, ensure that the two vehicles are not touch- ing.
2. Turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment in both vehicles.
3. Ensure that the engine of the ve- hicle providing the jump start is run- ning prior to connection of the jump cables.
4. Connect the red jump cable to the positive (+) terminal of the boosterbattery and the other end to thepositive (+) terminal of the dis- charged battery.
5. Attach the black jump cable to the negative (-) terminal of the boosterbattery, and the other end to a ground point within the engine compartmentof the vehicle with the flat bat-tery. Do not connect to the negative bat- tery terminal of the flat battery sincesparks may be generated with the subsequent risk of explosion.
6. Raise the booster vehicle engine speed to 2,000 r.p.m. and start theengine of the vehicle with the flat battery. 7. Switch "ON" the main beam
headlamps before carefully remov-ing the jumper cables in the reverse order of attachment. Once the jumper cables have been removed,switch "OFF" the main beam headlamps.
CAUTION:
If the jump cables are incorrectly installed, damage to the vehicle elec- trical system may occur, in particu- lar the electronic components suchas the Fuel Injection system com- puter and the Automatic transmis- sion computer. The battery mustnever be disconnected whilst the engine is running.
IF THE ENGINE OVERHEATS
HPD040A2-E If the temperature gauge indicates overheating:
1. Pull off the road and stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
2. Place the gear selector lever in "P"
(automatic), or neutral (manual trans- mission) and set the parking brake. If the air conditioning is on, turn it off.
3. If coolant is running out under the car or steam is coming out from underthe bonnet, stop the engine. Do not open the bonnet until the coolant hasstopped running or the steaming has stopped. If there is no visible loss of coolant and no steam, leave theengine running and check to be sure the engine cooling fan is operating. If the fan is not running, turn theengine off.
4. Check to see if the water pump drive
belt is broken. If it is not missing,check to see that it is tight. If the drive belt seems to be satisfactory, check for coolant leaking from theradiator, hoses or under the car. (If the air conditioning had been in use, it is normal for cold water to bedraining from it).

5VEHICLE MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS

tain electronic fuel injection/engine management and automatic trans- mission control systems requirespecialised electronic equipment specifically designed for Hyundai vehicles. The use of general pur-pose electrical test equipment may result in damage to the control unit microprocessors.

Specified Scheduled Procedures
The specified scheduled procedures
are listed in the maintenance chartsbeginning at page 5-3. The operationsspecified must be performed at the time or mileage intervals shown irre- spective of whether the mileage inter-val has been reached before the speci- fied time interval.
Certain lubricants and components
degrade with both time and mileage(eg, engine oil and brake fluid) and therefore it is not permissable to basethe maintenance schedule upon mile- age alone. DF020F1-E

It is important that all scheduled main-
tenance services are recorded in the warranty and service passport to en- sure that proof of maintenance is avail- able when warranty service is required. It is strongly recommended that the
maintenance operations are performedby a Hyundai authorised repairer be- cause of the need for specialised knowl- edge and tooling and to ensure that nopossibility of invalidating the manufac- turers warranty exists.
The maintenance schedules relate to
vehicles operated under normal condi-tions, vehicles which are operated under adverse conditions will requiremore frequent maintenance which is described at page 5-6. NOTE:
