1-10Safety—Seats, seat belts and supplemental restraint system
WARNING
The adjustable headrests supplement the
other vehicle safety systems. They may
provide additional protection against injury
in certain rear end collisions. Adjust the
headrests properly, as specified in this
section. Check the adjustment after some-
one else uses the seat. Do not attach
anything to the adjustable headrest stalks
or remove the adjustable headrests. Do not
use the seat if the adjustable headrests
have been removed. If the headrest was
removed, re-install and properly adjust the
headrest before an occupant uses the
seating position. Failure to follow these
instructions can reduce the effectiveness of
the adjustable headrests. This may increase
the risk of serious injury or death in a
collision.

2. Secure the child restraint anchor at-
tachments to the LATCH lower anchors.
Check to make sure the LATCH attach-
ment is properly attached to the lower
anchors.
If the child restraint is equipped with a
top tether strap, route the top tether
strap and secure the tether strap to the
tether anchor point. See “Installing top
tether strap” in this section. Do not
install child restraints that require the
use of a top tether strap in seating
positions that do not have a top tether
anchor.

3. The back of the child restraint should
be secured against the vehicle seat-
back.
If necessary, adjust or remove the
headrest to obtain the correct child
restraint fit. If the headrest is removed,
store it in a secure place. Be sure to
reinstall the headrest when the child
restraint is removed. See“Adjustable
headrest” earlier in this section for
headrest adjustment information.
If the seating position does not have an
adjustable head restraint or headrest
and it is interfering with the proper child restraint fit, try another seating
position or a different child restraint.

Forward-facing (front passenger seat) —
step 1
Refer to all Warnings and Cautions in the
“Child safety” and“Child restraints” sec-
tions before installing a child restraint.
Follow these steps to install a forward-
facing child restraint using the vehicle seat
belt in the rear seats or in the front
passenger seat:
1. If you must install a child restraint in
the front seat, it should be placed in a
forward-facing direction only. Move the
seat to the rearmost position. Child
restraints for infants must be used in
the rear-facing direction and, therefore,
must not be used in the front seat. 2. Position the child restraint on the seat.
Always follow the child restraint man-
ufacturer’s instructions.
The back of the child restraint should
be secured against the vehicle seat-
back.
If necessary, adjust or remove the head
restraint or headrest to obtain the
correct child restraint fit. If the head
restraint or headrest is removed, store
it in a secure place. Be sure to reinstall
the head restraint or headrest when
the child restraint is removed. See
“Head restraints” earlier in this section
or “Adjustable headrest” earlier in this
section for head restraint or headrest
adjustment, removal and installation
information.
If the seating position does not have an
adjustable head restraint or headrest
and it is interfering with the proper
child restraint fit, try another seating
position or a different child restraint.
SSS0360B
Forward-facing —step 3
3. Route the seat belt tongue through the
child restraint and insert it into the
buckle until you hear and feel the latch
engage. Be sure to follow the child
restraint manufacturer’s instructions
for belt routing.
If the child restraint is equipped with a
top tether strap, route the top tether
strap and secure the tether strap to the
tether anchor point (rear seat installa-
tion only). See “Installing top tether
strap”. Do not install child restraints
that require the use of a top tether
strap in seating positions that do not
have a top tether anchor.

WARNING
.If the cargo cover contacts the top tether
strap when it is attached to the top
tether anchor, remove the cargo cover
from the vehicle or secure it on the cargo
floor below its attachment location. If
the cargo cover is not removed, it may
damage the top tether strap during a
collision. Your child could be seriously
injured or killed in a collision if the child
restraint top tether strap is damaged.
. Do not allow cargo to contact the top
tether strap when it is attached to the
top tether anchor. Properly secure the
cargo so it does not contact the top
tether strap. Cargo that is not properly
secured or cargo that contacts the top
tether strap may damage the top tether
strap during a collision. Your child could
be seriously injured or killed in a
collision if the child restraint top tether
strap is damaged.
SSS0841
First, secure the child restraint with the
LATCH lower anchors (rear outboard seat-
ing positions only) or the seat belt, as
applicable.
1. If necessary, raise or remove the head-
rest to position the top tether strap
over the top of the seatback. If the
headrest is removed, store it in a
secure place. Be sure to reinstall the
headrest when the child restraint is
removed. See “Adjustable headrest”
earlier in this section for headrest
adjustment, removal and installation
information. 2. Secure the top tether strap to the tether
anchor point on the back of seatback
behind the child restraint.
If necessary, raise or remove the head-
rest to position the top tether strap
over the top of the seatback. If the
headrest is removed, store it in a
secure place. Be sure to reinstall the
headrest when the child restraint is
removed. See “Adjustable headrest” for
headrest adjustment, removal and in-
stallation information.
3. Refer to the appropriate child restraint installation procedure steps in this
section before tightening the tether
strap.
If you have any questions when installing
a top tether strap, consult your INFINITI
retailer for details.

3. The booster seat should be positioned
on the vehicle seat so that it is stable.
If necessary, adjust or remove the head
restraint or headrest to obtain the
correct booster seat fit. If the head
restraint or headrest is removed, store
it in a secure place. Be sure to reinstall
the head restraint or headrest when
the booster seat is removed. See“Head
restraints” earlier in this section or
“Adjustable headrest” earlier in this
section for head restraint or headrest
adjustment, removal and installation
information. If the seating position does not have an
adjustable head restraint or headrest
and it is interfering with the proper
booster seat fit, try another seating
position or a different booster seat.
4. Position the lap portion of the seat belt low and snug on the child’s hips. Be
sure to follow the booster seat manu-
facturer’s instructions for adjusting the
seat belt routing.
5. Pull the shoulder belt portion of the seat belt toward the retractor to take up
extra slack. Be sure the shoulder belt is
positioned across the top, middle por-
tion of the child’s shoulder. Be sure to
follow the booster seat manufacturer’s
instructions for adjusting the seat belt
routing.
6. Follow the warnings, cautions and
instructions for properly fastening a
seat belt shown in the “Seat belts”
earlier in this section.
SSS0676
7. If the booster seat is installed in the
front passenger seat, push the ignition
switch to the ON position. The front
passenger air bag status light
may
or may not illuminate depending on the
size of the child and the type of booster
seat used. (See “Front passenger air
bag and status light” later in this
section.)

8-4Maintenance and do-it-yourself
Keep the floor mat away from the pedal.
Automatic transmission P (Park) mechan-
ism:On a fairly steep hill, check that your
vehicle is held securely with the selector
lever in the P (Park) position without
applying any brakes.
Brake pedal: Check the pedal for smooth
operation. If the brake pedal suddenly
goes down further than normal, the pedal
feels spongy or the vehicle seems to take
longer to stop, see an INFINITI retailer
immediately. Keep the floor mat away from
the pedal.
Brakes: Check that the brakes do not pull
the vehicle to one side when applied.
Parking brake: Check the parking brake
operation regularly. The vehicle should be
securely held on a fairly steep hill with only
the parking brake applied. If the parking
brake needs adjusted, see an INFINITI
retailer.
Seat belts: Check that all parts of the seat
belt system (for example, buckles, an-
chors, adjuster and retractors) operate
properly and smoothly, and are installed
securely. Check the belt webbing for cuts,
fraying, wear or damage.
Seats: Check seat position controls such as seat adjusters, seatback recliner, etc. to
ensure they operate smoothly and that all
latches lock securely in every position.
Check that the head restraint/headrest
moves up and down smoothly and that
the locks (if so equipped) hold securely in
all latched positions.
Steering wheel:
Check for changes in the
steering conditions, such as excessive free
play, hard steering or strange noises.
Warning lights and chimes: Make sure that
all warning lights and chimes are operating
properly.
Windshield defroster: Check that the air
comes out of the defroster outlets properly
and in sufficient quantity when operating
the heater or air conditioner.
Windshield wiper and washer*: Check that
the wipers and washer operate properly
and that the wipers do not streak.
