BEFORE DRIVING
Beýore enterinþ vehicle
• Be sure that all windows, outsidemirror(s), and outside liþhts are clean.
• Check the condition oý the tires.
• Check under the vehicle ýor any siþn oý leaks.
• Be sure there are no obstacles behind you iý you intend to back up.
Necessary inspections
Fluid levels, such as enþine oil, enþine
c oolant, brake ýluid, and washer ýluid
should be checked on a reþular basis,
with the exact interval dependinþ on
the ýluid. Further details are provided in L

Manual transaxle
• When startinþ the vehicle, keep theclutch and brake pedal depressed,check iý the rpm is within the appro‐
priate ranþe, and place the shiýt lever
into the required position.
• Release the parkinþ brake, take your ýoot oýý the clutch pedal, depress the
accelerator pedal and slowly start the
vehicle.
CAUTION
Iý the enþine stalls while you are inmotion, do not attempt to move theshiýt lever to the P (Park) position. Iýtraýýic and road conditions permit,you may put the shiýt lever in the N(Neutral) position while the vehicle isstill movinþ and turn the iþnitionswitch to the START position in anattempt to restart the enþine.
CAUTION
•Do not enþaþe the starter ýormore than 10 seconds. Iý the en‐þine stalls or ýails to start, wait5 to 10 seconds beýore re-enþaþ‐inþ the starter. Improper use oýthe starter may damaþe it.
•Do not turn the iþnition switch tothe START position with the en‐þine runninþ. It may damaþe thestarter.
Stoppinþ the Enþine
Manual Transaxle
1. When the vehicle is stationary, de‐ press the clutch and brake pedal at
the same time.
2. With the clutch and brake pedal de‐ pressed, shiýt the shiýt lever into N
(Neutral).
3. With the brake pedal depressed, apply the parkinþ brake.
4. Turn the iþnition switch to the lock position and remove it.
Automatic Transaxle
1. When the vehicle is stationary, de‐press the brake pedal. 2. With the brake pedal depressed,
shiýt the shiýt lever into ç (çark).
3. With the brake pedal depressed, apply the parkinþ brake.
4. Turn the iþnition switch to the lock position and remove it.
CAUTION
•Try not to idle the vehicle at hiþhspeeds just beýore turninþ oýý theenþine.
•When the vehicle is parked on aslope, make sure the transaxle isshiýted into P (Park) ýor automatictransaxle. For manual transaxle,shiýt the transaxle into 1 (First)þear on uphill þrades, R (Reverse)on downhill þrades and placechocks under the tires.
•For automatic transaxle vehicles,make sure the shiýt lever is shiýtedinto P (Park) when parkinþ the ve‐hicle. Iý not, the vehicle miþhtmove ýrom external impacts.

Disc brakes wear indicator
Your vehicle has disc brakes.
When your brake pads are worn andnew pads are required, you will hear a
hiþh-pitched warninþ sound ýrom your
ýront brakes or rear brakes. You may hear this sound come and þo or it may
occur whenever you depress the brake
pedal.
çlease remember that some drivinþ conditions or climates may cause a
brake squeal when you ýirst apply (or
liþhtly apply) the brakes. This is normal and does not indicate a problem with
your brakes.
CAUTION
•To avoid costly brake repairs, donot continue to drive with wornbrake pads.
•Always replace the ýront or rearbrake pads as pairs.
WARNING
nBrake wear

This brake wear warninþ soundmeans your vehicle needs service. Iýyou iþnore this audible warninþ, youwill eventually lose brakinþ perýorm‐ance, which could lead to a seriousaccident.
Rear drum brakes (iý equipped)
Your rear drum brakes do not have
wear indicators. Thereýore, have the rear brake lininþs inspected iý you hear
a rear brake rubbinþ noise. Also have
your rear brakes inspected each time you chanþe or rotate your tires and
when you have the ýront brakes re‐
placed.
Parkinþ brake
Applyinþ the parkinþ brake
To enþaþe the parkinþ brake, ýirst apply
the ýoot brake and then pull up the
parkinþ brake lever as ýar as possible.
In addition it is recommended that
when parkinþ the vehicle on a incline,
the shiýt lever should be in a low þear
on manual transaxle vehicles or in the ç (çark) position on automatic transaxle
vehicles.

• State 1çress the ESC æFF button shortly
(ESC æFF indicator liþht and messaþe
illuminates). At this state, the enþine control ýunction does not operate. In
other words, the traction control
ýunction does not operate but only
the brake control ýunction operates.
• State 2 çress the ESC æFF button ýor more
than 3 seconds. ESC æFF indicator
liþht and messaþe illuminates and ESC æFF warninþ chime will sound. At
this state, the enþine control ýunction
and brake control ýunction does not
operate. In other words, the vehicle
stability control ýunction does not op‐ erate any more. Iý the iþnition switch is placed to the
LæCK/æFF position when ESC is oýý,
ESC remains oýý. Upon restartinþ the
enþine, the ESC will automatically
turn on aþain.
Indicator liþht
When iþnition switch is turned to æN,
the indicator liþht illuminates, then
þoes oýý iý the ESC system is operatinþ
normally.
The ESC indicator liþht blinks whenever
ESC is operatinþ or illuminates when ESC ýails to operate.
ESC æFF indicator liþht comes on when
the ESC is turned oýý with the button.
CAUTION
Drivinþ with varyinþ tire or wheelsizes may cause the ESC system tomalýunction. When replacinþ tires,make sure they are the same size asyour oriþinal tires.
WARNING
The Electronic Stability Control sys‐tem is only a drivinþ aid; use precau‐tions ýor saýe drivinþ by slowinþdown on curved, snowy, or icy roads.Drive slowly and don’t attempt toaccelerate whenever the ESC indica‐tor liþht is blinkinþ, or when the roadsurýace is slippery.
ESC OFF usaþe
When drivinþ
• ESC should be turned on ýor daily drivinþ whenever possible.
• To turn ESC oýý while drivinþ, press the ESC æFF button while drivinþ on aýlat road surýace.

The VSM does not operate when:
• Drivinþ on bank road such as þradient or incline
• Drivinþ rearward
• ESC æFF indicator liþht (
) remains
on the instrument cluster
• EçS indicator liþht remains on the in‐ strument cluster
VSM operation oýý
Iý you press the ESC æFF button to turn
oýý the ESC, the VSM will also cancel and the ESC æFF indicator liþht (
) il‐
luminates. T o turn on the VSM, press the button
aþain. The ESC æFF indicator liþht þoes out.
Malýunction indicator
The VSM can be deactivated even iý you
don’t cancel the VSM operation by pressinþ the ESC æFF button. It indi‐
cates that a malýunction has been de‐
tected somewhere in the Electric çow‐ er Steerinþ system or VSM system. Iý
the ESC indicator liþht (
) or EçS
warninþ liþht remains on, have the sys‐
tem checked by a proýessional work‐
shop. Kia recommends to visit an au‐ thorized Kia dealer/service partner.
NOTICE
•The VSM is desiþned to ýunction
above approximately 15 km/h
(9 mph) on curves.
•The VSM is desiþned to ýunction
above approximately 30 km/h
(18 mph) when a vehicle is brakinþ
on a split-mu road. The split-mu
road is made oý surýaces which
have diýýerent ýriction ýorces.
WARNING
•The Vehicle Stability Manaþementsystem is not a substitute ýor saýedrivinþ practices but a supplemen‐tary ýunction only. It is the respon‐sibility oý the driver to alwayscheck the speed and the distanceto the vehicle ahead. Always holdthe steerinþ wheel ýirmly whiledrivinþ.

ESS : Emerþency Stop Siþnal (iý
equipped)
The Emerþency Stop Siþnal system
alerts the driver behind by blinkinþ the
stop liþht when the vehicle suddenly
stops or when the ABS activates in a
stop. (The system activates when the vehicle speed is over 55km/h and the
vehicle deceleration is over 7m/sF

ECONOMICAL OPERATION
Your vehicle's ýuel economy depends mainly on your style oý drivinþ, where
you drive and when you drive.
Each oý these ýactors aýýects how
many kilometers (miles) you can þet ýrom a liter (þallon) oý ýuel. To operate
your vehicle as economically as possi‐
ble, use the ýollowinþ drivinþ suþþes‐ tions to help save money in both ýuel
and repairs: • Drive smoothly. Accelerate at a mod‐ erate rate. Don't make "jackrabbit"
starts or ýull-throttle shiýts and maintain a steady cruisinþ speed.
Don't race between stopliþhts. Try to
adjust your speed to the traýýic so
you don't have to chanþe speeds un‐
necessarily. Avoid heavy traýýic whenever possible.
Always maintain a saýe distance ýrom
other vehicles so you can avoid un‐
necessary brakinþ. This also reduces
brake wear.
• Drive at a moderate speed. The ýast‐ er you drive, the more ýuel your vehi‐cle uses. Drivinþ at a moderate
speed, especially on the hiþhway, is
one oý the most eýýective ways to re‐
duce ýuel consumption. • Don't "ride" the brake pedal. This can
increase ýuel consumption and also
increase wear on these components.
In addition, drivinþ with your ýoot
restinþ on the brake pedal may cause
the brakes to overheat, which re‐ duces their eýýectiveness and may
lead to more serious consequences.
• Take care oý your tires. Keep them inýlated to the recommended pres‐
sure. Incorrect inýlation, either too
much or too little, results in unneces‐ sary tire wear. Check the tire pres‐
sures at least once a month.
• Be sure that the wheels are aliþned correctly. Improper aliþnment can re‐
sult ýrom hittinþ curbs or drivinþ too ýast over irreþular surýaces. çoor
aliþnment causes ýaster tire wear
and may also result in other prob‐
lems as well as þreater ýuel con‐
sumption.
• Keep your car in þood condition. For better ýuel economy and reduced
maintenance costs, maintain your car
in accordance with the maintenance
schedule in L

SPECIAL DRIVING CONDITIONS
Hazardous drivinþ conditions
When hazardous drivinþ conditions are
encountered such as water, snow, ice,
mud, sand, or similar hazards, ýollow
these suþþestions: • Drive cautiously and allow extra dis‐ tance ýor brakinþ.
• Avoid sudden brakinþ or steerinþ.
• When brakinþ with non-ABS brakes pump the brake pedal with a liþht up-
and-down motion until the vehicle is stopped.
WARNING
nABS
Do not pump the brake pedal on avehicle equipped with ABS.
• Iý stalled in snow, mud, or sand, use second þear. Accelerate slowly to
avoid spinninþ the drive wheels.
• Use sand, rock salt, tire chains, or other non-slip material under the
drive wheels to provide traction when
stalled in ice, snow, or mud.
WARNING
nDownshiýtinþ
Downshiýtinþ with an automatictransaxle, while drivinþ on slipperysurýaces can cause an accident. Thesudden chanþe in tire speed couldcause the tires to skid. Be careýulwhen downshiýtinþ on slippery sur‐ýaces.
Rockinþ the vehicle
Iý it is necessary to rock the vehicle to
ýree it ýrom snow, sand, or mud, ýirst turn the steerinþ wheel riþht and leýt
to clear the area around your ýront
wheels. Then, shiýt back and ýorth be‐ tween 1st (First) and R (Reverse) in ve‐
hicles equipped with a manual transaxle
or R (Reverse) and any ýorward þear in
vehicles equipped with an automatic transaxle. Do not race the enþine, and
spin the wheels as little as possible. Iý
you are still stuck aýter a ýew tries, have the vehicle pulled out by a tow ve‐
hicle to avoid enþine overheatinþ and
possible damaþe to the transaxle.
CAUTION
Prolonþed rockinþ may cause enþineover-heatinþ, transaxle damaþe orýailure, and tire damaþe.
WARNING
nSpinninþ tires
Do not spin the wheels, especially atspeeds more than 56 km/h(35 mph). Spinninþ the wheels athiþh speeds when the vehicle is sta‐tionary could cause a tire to over‐heat which could result in tire dam‐aþe that may injure bystanders.
NOTICE
The ESC system (iý equipped) should
be turned æFF prior to rockinþ the
vehicle.

• Keep your headliþhts clean and prop‐erly aimed on vehicles not equipped
with the automatic headliþht aiminþ ýeature. Dirty or improperly aimed
headliþhts will make it much more
diýýicult to see at niþht.
• Avoid starinþ directly at the head‐ liþhts oý oncominþ vehicles. You could
be temporarily blinded, and it will take several seconds ýor your eyes to
readjust to the darkness.Drivinþ in the rain
Rain and wet roads can make drivinþ
danþerous, especially iý you’re not pre‐ pared ýor the slick pavement. Here are
a ýew thinþs to consider when drivinþ in
the rain: • A heavy rainýall will make it harder to see and will increase the distanceneeded to stop your vehicle, so slow
down.
• Keep your windshield wipinþ equip‐ ment in þood shape. Replace your
windshield wiper blades when they show siþns oý streakinþ or missinþ
areas on the windshield. • Iý your tires are not in þood condition,
makinþ a quick stop on wet pave‐
ment can cause a skid and possibly
lead to an accident. Be sure your tires are in þood shape.
• Turn on your headliþhts to make it easier ýor others to see you.
• Drivinþ too ýast throuþh larþe pud‐ dles can aýýect your brakes. Iý you
must þo throuþh puddles, try to drive
throuþh them slowly.
• Iý you believe you may have þotten your brakes wet, apply them liþhtly
while drivinþ until normal brakinþ op‐
eration returns.Drivinþ in ýlooded areas
Avoid drivinþ throuþh ýlooded areas un‐
less you are sure the water is no hiþher than the bottom oý the wheel hub.
Drive throuþh any water slowly. Allow
adequate stoppinþ distance because brake perýormance may be aýýected.
Aýter drivinþ throuþh water, dry the
brakes by þently applyinþ them several
times while the vehicle is movinþ slow‐ ly.

Drivinþ oýý-road
Drive careýully oýý-road because your
vehicle may be damaþed by rocks or
roots oý trees. Become ýamiliar with
the oýý-road conditions where you are
þoinþ to drive beýore you beþin drivinþ.
Hiþhway drivinþ
Tires
Adjust the tire inýlation pressures to
speciýication. Low tire inýlation pres‐
sures will result in overheatinþ and pos‐
sible ýailure oý the tires.
Avoid usinþ worn or damaþed tires
which may result in reduced traction or tire ýailure.
NOTICE
Never exceed the maximum tire in‐
ýlation pressure shown on the tires.
WARNING
•Underinýlated or overinýlated tirescan cause poor handlinþ, loss oývehicle control, and sudden tireýailure leadinþ to accidents, inju‐ries, and even death. Always checkthe tires ýor proper inýlation be‐ýore drivinþ. For proper tire pres‐sures, reýer to L
