Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
When the vehicle is parked
Do not leave glasses, cigarette lighters, spray cans, or soft drink cans in the
vehicle when it is in the sun.
Doing so may result in the following:
• Gas may leak from a cigarette lighter or spray can, and may lead to a fire.
• The temperature inside the vehicle may cause the plastic lenses and plastic
material of glasses to deform or crack.
• Soft drink cans may fracture, causing the contents to spray over the interior
of the vehicle, and may also cause a short circuit in the vehicle’s electrical
components.
Do not leave cigarette lighters in the vehicle. If a cigarette lighter is in a place
such as the glove box or on the floor, it may be lit accidentally when luggage
is loaded or the seat is adjusted, causing a fire.
Do not attach adhesive discs to the windshield or windows. Do not place con-
tainers such as air fresheners on the instrument panel or dashboard. Adhesive
discs or containers may act as lenses, causing a fire in the vehicle.
Do not leave a door or window open if the curved glass is coated with a met-
allized film such as a silver-colored one. Reflected sunlight may cause the
glass to act as a lens, causing a fire.
Always apply the parking brake, shift the shift position to P, stop the hybrid
system and lock the vehicle.
Do not leave the vehicle unattended while the “READY” indicator is illumi-
nated.
Do not touch the exhaust pipe while the “READY” indicator is illuminated or
immediately after turning the hybrid system off.
Doing so may cause burns.

When the ambient temperature is low, such as during winter driving conditions
When starting the hybrid system, the flashing time of the “READY” indicator
may be long. Leave the vehicle as it is until the “READY” indicator is steady on,
as steady means the vehicle is able to move.

If the hybrid system does not start
The immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. (P. 87)
Contact any authorized Lexus dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional.
When the power switch indicator flashes in amber
The system may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle inspected by any autho-
rized Lexus dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped profes-
sional immediately.
If the “READY” indicator does not come on
In the event that the “READY” indicator does not come on even after performing
the proper procedures for starting the vehicle, contact any authorized Lexus
dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional immedi-
ately.

Operation of the power switch
When operating the power switch, one short, firm press is enough. If the switch
is pressed improperly, the hybrid system may not start or the power switch
mode may not change. It is not necessary to press and hold the switch.
If attempting to restart the hybrid system immediately after turning the power
switch off, the hybrid system may not start in some cases. After turning the
power switch off, please wait a few seconds before restarting the hybrid system.

When the P position control system malfunctions
The power switch will not be able to be turned off. In such a case, the switch can
be turned off after applying the parking brake.
Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Lexus dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional immediately.

EV drive mode
Turns EV drive mode on/off
When EV drive mode is turned on,
the EV drive mode indicator will
come on. Pressing the switch when
in EV drive mode will return the
vehicle to normal driving (using the
gasoline engine and electric motor
[traction motor]).
Situations in which EV drive mode cannot be turned on
It may not be possible to turn EV drive mode on in the following situations. If it
cannot be turned on, a buzzer will sound and a message will be shown on the
multi-information display.
The temperature of the hybrid system is high.
The vehicle has been left in the sun, driven on a hill, driven at high speeds, etc.
The temperature of the hybrid system is low.
The vehicle has been left in temperatures lower than about 0C (32F) for a
long period of time etc.
The gasoline engine is warming up.
The hybrid battery (traction battery) is low.
The remaining battery level indicated in the “Energy Monitor” display is low.

Vehicle speed is high.
The accelerator pedal is depressed firmly or the vehicle is on a hill etc.
The windshield defogger is in use.
In EV drive mode, the electric motor (traction motor), powered by the
hybrid battery (traction battery), is used to drive the vehicle.
This mode allows you to drive in residential areas late at night, or in
indoor parking lots etc. without concern for noises and exhaust gas emis-
sions.

The sensor sensitivity can be adjusted when “AUTO” is selected.

Raindrop sensor (vehicles with rain-sensing windshield wipers)
If the wiper switch is turned to the “AUTO” position while the power switch is
in ON mode, the wipers will operate once to show that AUTO mode is acti-
vated.
If the temperature of the raindrop sensor is 90C (194F) or higher, or -15C
(5F) or lower, automatic operation may not occur. In this case, operate the wip-
ers in any mode other than “AUTO”.
If no windshield washer fluid sprays
Check that the washer nozzles are not blocked if there is washer fluid in the
washer fluid tank.

The raindrop sensor judges the amount of
raindrops.

If you notice any symptoms

and the solution, and re-check.
If the symptom is not resolved by the solution, have the vehicle
inspected by any authorized Lexus dealer or repairer, or another duly

When using the rear view monitor system
The rear view monitor system is a supplemental device intended to assist the
driver when backing up. When backing up, be sure to check visually behind
and all around the vehicle before proceeding.
Observe the following precautions to avoid an accident that could result in
death or serious injuries.
Never depend on the rear view monitor system entirely when backing up. The
image and the position of the guide lines displayed on the screen may differ
from the actual state.
Use caution, just as you would when backing up any vehicle.
Be sure to back up slowly, depressing the brake pedal to control vehicle
speed.
The instructions given are only guide lines.
When and how much to turn the steering wheel will vary according to traffic
conditions, road surface conditions, vehicle condition, etc. when parking. It is
necessary to be fully aware of this before using the rear view monitor system.
When parking, be sure to check that the parking space will accommodate your
vehicle before maneuvering into it.
Do not use the rear view monitor system in the following cases:
• On icy or slick road surfaces, or in snow
• When using tire chains or emergency tires
• When the back door is not closed completely
• On roads that are not flat or straight, such as curves or slopes.
In low temperatures, the screen may darken or the image may become faint.
The image could distort when the vehicle is moving, or you may become
unable to see the image on the screen. Be sure to check direct visually and
with the mirrors all around the vehicle before proceeding.
If the tire sizes are changed, the position of the fixed guide lines displayed on
the screen may change.
The camera uses a special lens. The distances between objects and pedestrians
that appear in the image displayed on the screen will differ from the actual
distances.

NOTICE
How to use the camera
The rear view monitor system may not operate properly in the following
cases.
• If the back of the vehicle is hit, the position and mounting angle of the
camera may change.
• As the camera has a water proof construction, do not detach, disassemble
or modify it. This may cause incorrect operation.
• Do not strongly rub the camera lens. If the camera lens is scratched, it can-
not transmit a clear image.
• Do not allow organic solvent, car wax, window cleaner or glass coat to
adhere to the camera. If this happens, wipe it off as soon as possible.
• If the temperature changes rapidly, such as when hot water is poured on the
vehicle in cold weather, the system may not operate normally.
• When washing the vehicle, do not apply intensive bursts of water to the
camera or camera area. Doing so may result in the camera malfunctioning.
• When the camera is used under fluorescent lights, sodium light or mercury
light etc., the lights and the illuminated areas may appear to flicker.
Do not expose the camera to strong impact as this could cause a malfunction.
If this happens, have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Lexus dealer or
repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional as soon as possi-
ble.

Delays
Repeated acceleration and deceleration, as well as long waits at traffic
lights, will lead to bad fuel economy. Check traffic reports before leav-
ing and avoid delays as much as possible. When driving in a traffic
jam, gently release the brake pedal to allow the vehicle to move for-
ward slightly while avoiding overuse of the accelerator pedal. Doing so
can help control excessive gasoline consumption.
Highway driving
Control and maintain the vehicle at a constant speed. Before stopping
at a toll booth or similar, allow plenty of time to release the accelerator
and gently apply the brakes. A greater amount of electrical energy can
be regenerated when slowing down.
Air conditioning
Use the air conditioning only when necessary. Doing so can help
reduce excessive gasoline consumption.
In summer: When the ambient temperature is high, use the recirculated
air mode. Doing so will help to reduce the burden on the air condition-
ing system and reduce fuel consumption as well.
In winter: Because the gasoline engine will not automatically cut out
until it and the interior of the vehicle are warm, it will consume fuel.
Fuel consumption can be improved by avoiding overuse of the heater.
Checking tire inflation pressure
Make sure to check the tire inflation pressure frequently. Improper tire
inflation pressure can cause poor fuel economy.
Also, as snow tires can cause large amounts of friction, their use on dry
roads can lead to poor fuel economy. Use tires that are appropriate for
the season.

Winter driving tips
Use fluids that are appropriate to the prevailing outside temperatures.
•Engine oil
• Engine/power control unit coolant
•Washer fluid
Have a service technician inspect the condition of the 12-volt battery.
Have the vehicle fitted with four snow tires or purchase a set of tire
chains for the front tires.
Ensure that all tires are the same size and brand, and that chains match the size
of the tires.
Perform the following according to the driving conditions:
Do not try to forcibly open a window or move a wiper that is frozen.
Pour warm water over the frozen area to melt the ice. Wipe away the
water immediately to prevent it from freezing.
To ensure proper operation of the climate control system fan, remove
any snow that has accumulated on the air inlet vents in front of the
windshield.
Check for and remove any excess ice or snow that may have accumu-
lated on the exterior lights, vehicle’s roof, chassis, around the tires or
on the brakes.
Remove any snow or mud from the bottom of your shoes before get-
ting in the vehicle.
Carry out the necessary preparations and inspections before driving the
vehicle in winter. Always drive the vehicle in a manner appropriate to the
prevailing weather conditions.

Switching the display
Press the “TEXT” button.
Each time the button is pressed, the display changes in the following order:
Folder no./File no./Elapsed time  Folder name  File name 

CD player protection feature
To protect the internal components, playback is automatically stopped when a
problem is detected.
Display
Up to 12 characters can be displayed at a time.
If there are 13 or more characters, pressing and holding the “TEXT” button for 1
second or more enables to display the remaining characters.
A maximum of 24 characters can be displayed.
If the “TEXT” button is pressed for more than 1 second again or has not been
operated for more than 6 seconds, the display will return to the first 12 charac-
ters.
Depending on the contents recorded, the characters may not be displayed prop-
erly or may not be displayed at all.
When “ERROR”, “WAIT” or “NO MUSIC” is shown on the display
“ERROR”:
This indicates a trouble either in the CD or inside the player. The CD may be
dirty, damaged, or inserted up-side down.
“WAIT”:
This indicates that operation is stopped due to a high temperature inside the
player. Wait for a while and then press the “CD” button. If the CD still cannot be
played back, contact any authorized Lexus dealer or repairer, or another duly
qualified and equipped professional.
“NO MUSIC”:
This indicates that an MP3/WMA file is not included in the CD.
Discs that can be used
Discs with the marks shown below can be used.
Playback may not be possible depending on recording format or disc features, or
due to scratches, dirt or deterioration.
CDs with copy-protection features may not be used.
