Hybrid battery (traction battery)
Never resell, hand over or modify the hybrid battery. To prevent accidents,
hybrid batteries that have been removed from a disposed vehicle are collected
through Lexus dealer. Do not dispose of the battery yourself.
Unless the battery is properly collected, the following may occur, resulting in
death or serious injury:
• The hybrid battery may be illegally disposed of or dumped, and it is haz-
ardous to the environment or someone may touch a high voltage part,
resulting in an electric shock.
• The hybrid battery is intended to be used exclusively with your hybrid
vehicle. If the hybrid battery is used outside of your vehicle or modified in
any way, accidents such as electric shock, heat generation, smoke genera-
tion, an explosion and electrolyte leakage may occur.
When reselling or handing over your vehicle, the possibility of an accident is
extremely high because the person receiving the vehicle may not be aware of
these dangers.
If your vehicle is disposed of without the hybrid battery having been
removed, there is a danger of serious electric shock if high voltage parts,
cables and their connectors are touched. In the event that your vehicle must be
disposed of, the hybrid battery must be disposed of by any authorized Lexus
dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional or a
qualified service shop. If the hybrid battery is not disposed of properly, it may
cause electric shock that can result in death or serious injury.
NOTICE
Hybrid battery air vent
Do not put foreign objects near the air vent. The hybrid battery (traction bat-
tery) may overheat and be damaged.
Clean the air vent regularly to prevent the hybrid battery (traction battery)
from overheating.
Do not wet or allow foreign substances to enter the air vent as this may cause
a short circuit and damage the hybrid battery (traction battery).
Do not carry large amounts of water such as water cooler bottles in the vehi-
cle. If water spills onto the hybrid battery (traction battery), the battery may
be damaged. Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Lexus dealer or
repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional.

Engine speed
On hybrid vehicles, engine speed is precisely controlled in order to help improve
fuel efficiency and reduce exhaust emissions etc.
There are times when the engine speed that is displayed may differ even when
vehicle operation and driving conditions are the same.
Outside temperature display
In the following situations, the correct outside temperature may not be dis-
played, or the display may take longer than normal to change.
• When stopped, or driving at low speeds (less than 20 km/h [12 mph])
• When the outside temperature has changed suddenly (at the entrance/exit of
a garage, tunnel, etc.)
When “--” or “E” is displayed, the system may be malfunctioning.
Take your vehicle to any authorized Lexus dealer or repairer, or another duly
qualified and equipped professional.
Customization
Settings (e.g. on/off operation of the ECO lamp) can be changed.

NOTICE
To prevent damage to the engine and its components
Vehicles with tachometer: Do not let the indicator needle of the tachometer
enter the red zone, which indicates the maximum engine speed.
The engine may be overheating if the high coolant temperature warning light
comes on or flashes. In this case, immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place,
and check the engine after it has cooled completely. (P. 628)

Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
When taking a nap in the vehicle
Always turn the hybrid system off. Otherwise, if you accidentally move the
shift lever or depress the accelerator pedal, this could cause an accident or fire
due to hybrid system overheating. Additionally, if the vehicle is parked in a
poorly ventilated area, exhaust gases may collect and enter the vehicle, leading
to death or a serious health hazard.
When braking
When the brakes are wet, drive more cautiously.
Braking distance increases when the brakes are wet, and this may cause one
side of the vehicle to brake differently than the other side. Also, the parking
brake may not securely hold the vehicle.
If the electronically controlled assist function does not operate, do not follow
other vehicles closely and avoid downhill or sharp turns that require braking.
In this case, braking is still possible, but the brake pedal should be depressed
more firmly than usual. Also, the braking distance will increase. Have your
brakes fixed immediately.
The brake system consists of 2 or more individual hydraulic systems; if one of
the systems fails, the other(s) will still operate. In this case, the brake pedal
should be depressed more firmly than usual and the braking distance will
increase. Have your brakes fixed immediately.

Parking brake
To set the parking brake, fully
depress the parking brake pedal
with your left foot while depressing
the brake pedal with your right foot.
(Depressing the pedal again
releases the parking brake.)
Parking brake engaged warning buzzer
The buzzer sounds to indicate that parking brake is still engaged (with the vehi-
cle having reached a speed of 5 km/h [3 mph]). (P. 580)

Fully release the parking brake.
Driving the vehicle with the parking brake set will lead to brake components
overheating, which may affect braking performance and increase brake wear.

When the driving mode select switch is turned left, the “ECO MODE” indica-

Sport mode
Use when high levels of response and feeling are desirable, such as when driv-
ing in mountainous regions or when overtaking.
When the driving mode select switch is turned right, the “SPORT MODE”
indicator comes on in the instrument cluster.
Press the switch to change the driving mode to normal mode.
Operation of the air conditioning system in Eco drive mode
Eco drive mode controls the heating/cooling operations and fan speed of the air
conditioning system to enhance fuel efficiency (P. 450, 457). To improve air
conditioning performance, adjust the fan speed or turn off Eco drive mode.
Sport mode automatic deactivation
Sport mode is automatically deactivated if the power switch is turned off after
driving in sport mode.
The driving modes can be selected to suit driving conditions.

When the “TRC OFF” indicator comes on even if the TRC OFF switch has not
been pressed
TRC cannot be operated. Contact any authorized Lexus dealer or repairer, or
another duly qualified and equipped professional.
Sounds and vibrations caused by the ABS, brake assist, VSC and TRC
A sound may be heard from the engine compartment when the hybrid system is
started, just after the vehicle begins to move, if the brake pedal is depressed
forcefully or repeatedly, or 1-2 minutes after the hybrid system is stopped. This
sound does not indicate that a malfunction has occurred in any of these systems.
Any of the following conditions may occur when the above systems are operat-
ing. None of these indicates that a malfunction has occurred.
• Vibrations may be felt through the vehicle body and steering.
• A motor sound may be heard after the vehicle comes to a stop.
• The brake pedal may pulsate slightly after the ABS is activated.
• The brake pedal may move down slightly after the ABS is activated.
EPS operation sound
When the steering wheel is operated, a motor sound (whirring sound) may be
heard. This does not indicate a malfunction.
Reduced effectiveness of the EPS system
The effectiveness of the EPS system is reduced to prevent the system from over-
heating when there is frequent steering input over an extended period of time.
The steering wheel may feel heavy as a result. Should this occur, refrain from
excessive steering input or stop the vehicle and turn the hybrid system off. The
EPS system should return to normal within 10 minutes.
Automatic reactivation of TRC system
After turning the TRC system off, the system will be automatically re-enabled in
the following situations:
When the power switch is turned off
The TRC will turn on when vehicle speed increases
Operating conditions of emergency brake signal
When the following three conditions are met, the emergency brake signal will
operate:
The emergency flashers are off.
Actual vehicle speed is over 55 km/h (35 mph).
The brake pedal is depressed in a manner that cause the system to judge from
the vehicle deceleration that this is a sudden braking operation.
Automatic system cancelation of emergency brake signal
The emergency brake signal will turn off in any of the following situations:
The emergency flashers are turned on.
The brake pedal is released.
The system judges from the vehicle deceleration that is not a sudden braking
operation.

Hybrid vehicle driving tips
Using Eco drive mode
When using Eco drive mode, the torque corresponding to the accelera-
tor pedal depression amount can be generated more smoothly than it is
in normal conditions. In addition, the operation of the air conditioning
system (heating/cooling) will be minimized, improving the fuel econ-
omy. (P. 267)
Use of Hybrid System Indicator
The Eco-friendly driving is possible by keeping the indicator needle of
Hybrid System Indicator within Eco area. (P. 107)
Shift lever operation
Shift the shift position to D when stopped at a traffic light, or driving in
heavy traffic etc. Shift the shift position to P when parking. When
using the N position, there is no positive effect on fuel consumption. In
the N position, the gasoline engine operates but electricity cannot be
generated. Also, when using the air conditioning system, etc., the
hybrid battery (traction battery) power is consumed.
Accelerator pedal/brake pedal operation
Drive your vehicle smoothly. Avoid abrupt acceleration and deceler-
ation. Gradual acceleration and deceleration will make more effec-
tive use of the electric motor (traction motor) without having to use
gasoline engine power.
Avoid repeated acceleration. Repeated acceleration consumes
hybrid battery (traction battery) power, resulting in poor fuel con-
sumption. Battery power can be restored by driving with the acceler-
ator pedal slightly released.
When braking
Make sure to operate the brakes gently and in a timely manner. A
greater amount of electrical energy can be retained when slowing
down.
For economical and ecological driving, pay attention to the following
points:

The dehumidification function may not operate even when “A/C” is pressed or
“A/C” is selected.
Operation of the air conditioning system in Eco drive mode
In the Eco drive mode, the air conditioning system is controlled as follows to
prioritize fuel efficiency
• Engine speed and compressor operation controlled to restrict heating/cooling
capacity
• Fan speed restricted when automatic mode is selected
To improve air conditioning performance, perform the following operations
• Adjust the fan speed
• Turn off Eco drive mode
• Customize the air conditioning control of Eco drive mode. (P. 658)

During use, various odors from inside and outside the vehicle may enter into

• The start timing of the blower may be delayed for a short period of time

Interior features

Heated steering wheel/seat heaters

: If equipped
Heated steering wheel and seat heaters heat the side grips of the steering
wheel and seats, respectively.
WA R N I N G
Care should be taken to prevent injury if anyone in the following categories
comes in contact with the steering wheel and seats when the heater is on:
• Babies, small children, the elderly, the sick and the physically challenged
• Persons with sensitive skin
• Persons who are fatigued
• Persons who have taken alcohol or drugs that induce sleep (sleeping drugs,
cold remedies, etc.)
Observe the following precautions to prevent minor burns or overheating:
• Do not cover the seat with a blanket or cushion when using the seat heater.
• Do not use seat heater more than necessary.
NOTICE
Do not put heavy objects that have an uneven surface on the seat and do not
stick sharp objects (needles, nails, etc.) into the seat.
To prevent 12-volt battery discharge, do not use the functions when the hybrid
system is off.
