611-4. Hybrid system
1
For safety and security
*: When the hybrid battery (traction bat-tery) requires charging or the engine is
warming up, etc., the gasoline engine will
not automatically stop.
â During normal driving
The gasoline engine is predominantly
used. The electric motor (traction
motor) charges the hybrid battery
(traction battery) as necessary.
â When accelerating sharply
When the accelerator pedal is
depressed heavily, the power of the
hybrid battery (traction battery) is
added to that of the gasoline engine via
the electric motor (traction motor).
â When braking (regenerative brak-
ing)
The wheels operate the electric motor
(traction motor) as a power generator,
and the hybrid battery (traction bat-
tery) is charged.
â Regenerative braking
In the following situations, kinetic energy is
converted to electric energy and decelera-
tion force can be obta ined in conjunction
with the recharging of the hybrid battery
(traction battery).
âThe accelerator pedal is released while
driving with the shift position in D or M.
âThe brake pedal is depressed while driv-
ing with the shift position in D or M.
â EV indicator
The EV indicator comes on when the vehi-
cle is driven using only the electric motor
(traction motor) or th e gasoline engine is
stopped.
â Conditions in which the gasoline engine
may not stop
The gasoline engine starts and stops auto-
matically. However, it may not stop auto-
matically in the following conditions
*:
âDuring gasoline engine warm-up
âDuring hybrid battery (traction battery)
charging
âWhen the temperature of the hybrid bat-
tery (traction battery) is high or low
âWhen the heater is switched on
âWhen the shift position is in M*: Depending on the circumstances, the gasoline engine may also not stop auto-
matically in other situations.
â Charging the hybrid battery (traction
battery)
As the gasoline engine charges the hybrid
battery (traction battery), the battery does
not need to be charged from an outside
source. However, if the vehicle is left parked
for a long time the hybrid battery (traction
battery) will slowly discharge. For this rea-
son, be sure to drive the vehicle at least
once every few months for at least 30 min-
utes or 10 miles (16 km ). If the hybrid bat-
tery (traction battery) becomes fully
discharged and you are unable to start the
hybrid system, contact your Lexus dealer.
â Charging the 12-volt battery
ï® P.365
â After the 12-volt battery has discharged
or when the terminal has been removed
and installed during exchange, etc.
The gasoline engine may not stop even if
the vehicle is being driven by the hybrid bat-
tery (traction battery). If this continues for a
few days, contact your Lexus dealer.

For safety and security
â Alarm-operated door lock
In the following cases, depending on the sit-
uation, the door may automatically lock to
prevent improper entry into the vehicle:
âWhen a person remaining in the vehicle
unlocks the door and the alarm is acti-
vated.
âWhile the alarm is activated, a person
remaining in the vehicle unlocks the door.
âWhen recharging or replacing the 12-volt
battery
NOTICE
â To ensure the system operates cor-
rectly
Do not modify or remove the system. If
modified or removed, the proper opera-
tion of the system cannot be guaranteed.
Theft prevention labels
(U.S.A.)
These labels are attached to the
vehicle to reduce vehicle theft by
facilitating the tracing and recov-
ery of parts from stolen vehicles.
Do not remove under penalty of
law.

radio waves, the battery will become
depleted even if the electronic key is not
used. The following symptoms indicate
that the electronic key battery may be
depleted. Replace the battery when nec-
essary. (ï®P.322)
⢠The smart access system with push-but- ton start or the wireless remote control
does not operate.
⢠The detection area becomes smaller.
â¢The LED indicator on the key surface does not turn on.
âTo avoid serious deterioration, do not
leave the electronic ke y within 3 ft. (1 m)
of the following electr ical appliances that
produce a magnetic field:
â¢TVs
⢠Personal computers
⢠Cellular phones, cordless phones and battery chargers
⢠Recharging cellular phones or cordless
phones
⢠Table lamps
⢠Induction cookers

â Confirmation of the registered key
number
The number of keys already registered to
the vehicle can be confirmed. Ask your
Lexus dealer for details.
â If âA New Key has been Registered
Contact Your Dealer for Detailsâ is
shown on the multi-information display
This message will be displayed each time
the driverâs door is opened when the doors
are unlocked from the outside for approxi-
mately 10 days after a new electronic key
has been registered.
If this message is disp layed but you have not
had a new electronic key registered, ask
your Lexus dealer to check if an unknown
electronic key (other than those in your
possession) has been registered.
NOTICE
â To prevent key damage
âDo not drop the keys, subject them to
strong shocks or bend them.
âDo not expose the keys to high tem-
peratures for long periods of time.
âDo not get the keys wet or wash them
in an ultrasonic washer etc.
âDo not attach metallic or magnetic
materials to the keys or place the keys
close to such materials.
âDo not disassemble the keys.
âDo not attach a sticker or anything else
to the surface of the electronic key.
âDo not place the keys near objects that
produce magnetic fields, such as TVs,
audio systems and induction cookers.
âDo not place the keys near medical
electrical equipment such as low-fre-
quency therapy equipment or micro-
wave therapy equipment, and do not
receive medical attent ion with the keys
on your person.
â Carrying the electronic key on your
person
Carry the electronic key 3.9 in. (10 cm)
or more away from electric appliances
that are turned on. Radio waves emitted
from electric applianc es within 3.9 in. (10
cm) of the electronic key may interfere
with the key, causing the key to not func-
tion properly.
