Scrapping of your Lexus
The SRS airbag and seat belt pretensioner devices in your Lexus contain explosive
chemicals. If the vehicle is scrapped with the airbags and seat belt pretensioners left
as they are, this may cause an accident such as fire. Be sure to have the systems of
the SRS airbag and seat belt pretensioner removed and disposed of by a qualified
service shop or by your Lexus deal er before you scrap your vehicle.
Leak detection pump
This pump performs fuel evaporation leakage check. This check is done approxi -
mately five hours after the engine is turned off. So you may hear sound coming from
un
derneath the luggage compartment for se veral minutes. It does not indicate a
malfunction.
CAUTION
â– General precautions while driving
Driving under the influence: Never drive your vehicle when under the influence of
al
cohol or drugs that have impaired your ab ility to operate your vehicle. Alcohol and
certain drugs delay reaction time, impair judgment and reduce coordination, which
could lead to an accident that will hurt or kill you, your occupants or others.
Defensive driving: Always drive defensively. Anticipate mistakes that other drivers or
pedestrians
might make and be ready to avoid accidents.
Driver distraction: Always give your full attention to driving. Anything that distracts
the driv
er, such as adjusting controls, talking on a cellular phone or reading can result
in a collision with resulting death or seriou s injury to you, your occupants or others.
â– When children are in the vehicle
Never leave children unattended in the vehicle.
When left unattended, children may be able to st
art the vehicle or shift the vehicle into
neutral. There is also a danger that children may injure themselves by playing with the
cigarette lighter, the windows, the moon roof , or other features of the vehicle. In addi-
tion, heat build-up or extremely cold temperatures inside the vehicle can be fatal to
ch
ildren.

When driving
CAUTION
â– When the vehicle is parked
â—ŹDo not leave glasses, cigarette lighters, spray cans, or soft drink cans in the vehi-
cle in hot areas.
• Gas may leak from a cigarette lighter or spr
ay can, and may lead to a fire.
• The temperature inside the vehicle may cause the plastic lenses and plastic
m
aterial of glasses to deform or crack.
• Soft drink cans may fracture, causing the co ntents
to spray over the interior of
the vehicle, and may also cause a short circuit in the vehicle’s electrical com -
ponents.
â—ŹAlways set the parking brake, shift the se lector lever to P, stop the engine and
lock the vehicle. ď€
Do not leave the vehicle unattend ed
while the engine is running.
â—ŹDo not leave the engine running in an area with snow build up, or where snow is
expected to fall. ď€
Exhaust gases may enter the interior of the vehicle and cause gas poisoning.
â– When taking a nap in the vehicle
Always turn the engine off. Otherwise, you may accidentally move the selector
le
ver or press the accelerator pedal, which could cause an accident or fire due to
abnormal engine overheating. Additionally, if the vehicle is parked in a poorly venti-
lated area, exhaust fumes may enter the vehicle and cause gas poisoning.

When trouble arises

5-2. Steps to take in an emergency
â– Avoiding a discharged battery
â—ŹTurn off the headlights and the audio system while the engine is turned off.
â—ŹTurn off any unnecessary electrical comp onents when the vehicle runs at a low
speed for an extended period, such as in heavy traffic, etc.
CAUTION
â– Avoiding battery fires or explosions
Observe the following precautions to prevent accidentally igniting the flammable
ga
s that may be emitted from the battery.
• Make sure the jumper cable is connected to
the correct terminal and that it is
not unintentionally in contact with any part other than the intended terminal.
• Do not allow the booster cables to come into cont
act with the + and - terminals.
• Do not generate a flame near the battery b
y using a match, cigarette lighter, or
smoking.
â– Battery precautions
The battery contains poisonous and corrosive electrolyte, while related parts con -
tain lead and lead compounds. ď€
Observe the following precautions when handling the battery.
• Do not lean over the battery
• When working with the battery, always we ar safety glas
ses and take care not to
allow any battery fluids (acid) to come into contact with skin, clothing or the
vehicle body.
• In the event that battery fluid comes into co
ntact with the skin or eyes, immedi-
ately wash the affected area with water and seek medical attention. Place a wet
sp
onge or cloth over the affected area until medical attention can be received.
• Always wash your hands after ha
ndling battery-related parts.
• Do not allow children near the battery.
Once the engine starts, have the vehicle checked at your Lexus dealer as
soon as possible.
