DATA RECORDING
Service Data Recording
Service data recorders in your vehicle arecapable of collecting and storing diagnosticinformation about your vehicle. Thispotentially includes information about theperformance or status of various systemsand modules in the vehicle, such as engine,throttle, steering or brake systems. In orderto properly diagnose and service yourvehicle, Ford Motor Company (Ford ofCanada in Canada), and service and repairfacilities may access or share among themvehicle diagnostic information receivedthrough a direct connection to your vehiclewhen diagnosing or servicing your vehicle.Additionally, Ford Motor Company (Ford ofCanada, in Canada) may, where permittedby law, use vehicle diagnostic informationfor vehicle improvement or with otherinformation we may have about you, (forexample, your contact information), to offer
you products or services that may interestyou. Data may be provided to our serviceproviders such as part suppliers that mayhelp diagnose malfunctions, and who aresimilarly obligated to protect data. We retainthis data only as long as necessary toperform these functions or to comply withlaw. We may provide information whererequired in response to official requests tolaw enforcement or other governmentauthorities or third parties acting with lawfulauthority or court order, and such informationmay be used in legal proceedings. For U.S.only (if equipped), if you choose to useconnected apps and services, such as SYNCVehicle Health Report or MyFord Mobile App,you consent that certain diagnosticinformation may also be accessedelectronically by Ford Motor Company andFord authorized service facilities, and thatthe diagnostic information may be used toprovide services to you, personalizing yourexperience, troubleshoot, and to improveproducts and services and offer you productsand services that may interest you, wherepermitted by law. Event Data Recording
This vehicle is equipped with an event datarecorder. The main purpose of an eventdata recorder is to record, in certain crashor near crash-like situations, such as anairbag deployment or hitting a roadobstacle; this data will assist inunderstanding how a vehicle’s systemsperformed. The event data recorder isdesigned to record data related to vehicledynamics and safety systems for a shortperiod of time, typically 30 seconds or less.

Introduction

Note:Including to the extent that any lawpertaining to Event Data Recorders appliesto SYNC or its features, please note thefollowing: Once 911 Assist (if equipped) isenabled (set ON), 911 Assist may, throughany paired and connected cell phone,disclose to emergency services that thevehicle has been in a crash involving thedeployment of an airbag or, in certainvehicles, the activation of the fuel pumpshut-off. Certain versions or updates to 911Assist may also be capable of being usedto electronically or verbally provide to 911operators the vehicle location (such aslatitude and longitude), and/or other detailsabout the vehicle or crash or personalinformation about the occupants to assist911 operators to provide the mostappropriate emergency services. Additionally, when you connect to Traffic,Directions and Information (if equipped,U.S. only), the service uses GPS technologyand advanced vehicle sensors to collectthe vehicle’s current location, traveldirection, and speed (“vehicle travelinformation”), only to help provide you withthe directions, traffic reports, or businesssearches that you request. If you do notwant Ford or its vendors to receive thisinformation, do not activate the service. Introduction

The Personal Safety System provides animproved overall level of frontal crashprotection to front seat occupants and isdesigned to help further reduce the risk ofairbag-related injuries. The system is able toanalyze different occupant conditions andcrash severity before activating theappropriate safety devices to help betterprotect a range of occupants in a variety offrontal crash situations.
The Vehicle Personal Safety System consistsof:
•Driver and passenger dual-stage airbagsupplemental restraints.
•Front seat outermost seatbelts withpretensioners, energy managementretractors and seatbelt usage sensors.
•Driver seat position sensor.
•Passenger seat position sensor.
•Front passenger sensing system.
•Passenger airbag off and on indicators.
•Front crash severity sensors.
•Restraints control module with impactand safing sensors.
•Restraint system warning lamp and tone.
•The electrical wiring for the airbags, crashsensors, seatbelt pretensioners, frontseatbelt usage sensors, driver seatposition sensor, front passenger sensingsystem and indicators.
How Does the Personal Safety SystemWork?
The Personal Safety System can adapt thedeployment strategy of the safety devicesaccording to crash severity and occupantconditions. A collection of crash andoccupant sensors provides information tothe restraints control module. During a crash,the restraints control module may deploy theseatbelt pretensioners, one or both stagesof the dual-stage airbags based on crashseverity and occupant conditions.

FRONT PASSENGER SENSING
SYSTEM
WARNING: Even with advancedrestraints systems, properly restrain children12 and under in a rear seating position.Failure to follow this could seriously increasethe risk of injury or death.
WARNING: Sitting improperly, out ofposition or with the seatback reclined too farcan take weight off the seat cushion andaffect the decision of the passenger sensingsystem, resulting in serious injury or deathin the event of a crash. Always sit uprightagainst your seat back, with your feet on thefloor.
WARNING: Any alteration ormodification to the front passenger seat mayaffect the performance of the front passengersensing system. This could seriously increasethe risk of injury or death.
The front passenger sensing system uses apassenger airbag status indicator whichilluminates indicating that the frontpassenger frontal airbag is either on(enabled) or off (disabled).
The indicator lamp is in the center stack ofthe instrument panel.
Note:When you first switch the ignition on,the passenger airbag status indicator off andon lamps illuminate for a short period toconfirm it is functional.
The front passenger sensing system isdesigned to disable (will not inflate) the frontpassenger frontal airbag under certainconditions:
•The front passenger seat is unoccupied.
•The system determines an infant ispresent in a child restraint.
•A passenger takes their weight off of theseat for a period of time.
•If there is a problem with the airbagsystem or the passenger sensing system.
Even with this technology, parents arestrongly encouraged to always properlyrestrain children in the rear seat.

•When the front passenger sensingsystem disables (will not inflate) the frontpassenger frontal airbag, the passengerairbag status indicator illuminates the offlamp and stays lit to remind you that thefront passenger frontal airbag is disabled.
•If you have installed the child restraintand the passenger airbag status indicatorilluminates the on lamp, then switch yourvehicle off, remove the child restraintfrom your vehicle and reinstall therestraint following the child restraintmanufacturer's instructions.
The front passenger sensing system workswith sensors that are part of the frontpassenger seat and seatbelt. The sensorsare designed to detect the presence of aproperly seated occupant and determine ifthe front passenger frontal airbag should beenabled.
•When the front passenger sensingsystem enables the front passengerfrontal airbag (may inflate), the passengerairbag status indicator illuminates the onlamp and remains illuminated.
If a person of adult size is sitting in the frontpassenger seat, but the passenger airbagstatus indicator off lamp is lit, it is possiblethat the person is not sitting properly in theseat. If this happens:
•Switch your vehicle off and ask theperson to place the seat backrest in anupright position.
•Have the person sit upright in the seat,centered on the seat cushion, with theperson's legs comfortably extended.
•Restart your vehicle and have the personremain in this position for about twominutes. This allows the system to detectthat person and enable the passengerfrontal airbag.
•If the indicator off lamp remains lit evenafter this, you should advise the personto ride in the rear seat.
After all occupants have adjusted their seatsand put on seatbelts, it is very important thatthey continue to sit properly. A properlyseated occupant sits upright, leaning againstthe seatback, and centered on the seatcushion, with their feet comfortably extendedon the floor. Sitting improperly can increase
the chance of injury in a crash event. Forexample, if an occupant slouches, lies down,turns sideways, sits forward, leans forwardor sideways, or puts one or both feet up, thechance of injury during a crash is greatlyincreased.
If you think that the state of the passengerairbag status indicator lamp is incorrect,check for the following:
•Objects lodged underneath the seat.
•Objects between the seat cushion andthe center console.
•Objects hanging off the seat backrest.
•Objects stowed in the seat backrest mappocket.
•Objects placed on the occupant's lap.
•Cargo interference with the seat
•Other passengers pushing or pulling onthe seat.
•Rear passenger feet and knees restingor pushing on the seat.

Supplementary Restraints System

The conditions listed above may cause theweight of a properly seated occupant to beincorrectly interpreted by the front passengersensing system. The person in the frontpassenger seat may appear heavier or lighterdue to the conditions described in theprevious list.
Make sure the front passengersensing system is operatingproperly. See Crash Sensors andAirbag Indicator (page 55).
If the airbag readiness light is lit, do thefollowing:
The driver and adult passengers shouldcheck for objects lodged underneath thefront passenger seat or cargo interfering withthe seat.
If objects are lodged or cargo is interferingwith the seat, please take the following stepsto remove the obstruction:
•Pull your vehicle over.
•Switch your vehicle off.
•Driver or adult passengers should checkfor any objects lodged underneath thefront passenger seat or cargo interferingwith the seat.
•Remove the obstruction(s) (if found).
•Restart your vehicle.
•Wait at least two minutes and verify thatthe airbag readiness light in theinstrument cluster is no longerilluminated.
•If the airbag readiness light in theinstrument cluster remains illuminated,this may or may not be a problem due tothe front passenger sensing system.
Do not attempt to repair or service thesystem. Take your vehicle immediately to anauthorized dealer.
If it is necessary to modify an advanced frontairbag system to accommodate a personwith disabilities, contact the Ford CustomerRelationship Center.
SIDE AIRBAGS
WARNING: Do not place objects ormount equipment on or near the airbagcover, on the side of the seatbacks (of thefront seats), or in front seat areas that maycome into contact with a deploying airbag.Failure to follow these instructions mayincrease the risk of personal injury in theevent of a crash.
WARNING: Do not use accessory seatcovers. The use of accessory seat coversmay prevent the deployment of the sideairbags and increase the risk of injury in anaccident.
WARNING: Do not lean your head onthe door. The side airbag could injure youas it deploys from the side of the seatback.

LOCKING AND UNLOCKING
Your vehicle has an intelligent electronicallycontrolled door system that is in constantcommunication with overall vehicle systems.
When you lock your vehicle using the lockswitch on each door interior trim panel, orby using the keyless entry keypad or the locksensor on each door exterior trim panel, theexterior door handle switches do not releasethe doors. This helps to secure your vehicleand prevent unauthorized entry. Also, whenyour vehicle reaches a speed greater than12 mph (20 km/h) the exterior door handleswitches do not release the doors.
If the airbags deploy or the fuel pump shutoffswitch activates, all interior and exteriorunlock switches do not unlock your door forsix seconds. This helps to secure the doorsin the event of a crash. After six seconds, allswitches reset and you can open the doorsusing the interior and exterior unlatchswitches.
Door Lock Indicator
An LED on each front door window trimilluminates when you lock the doors. Itremains on for 2 to 5 seconds after youswitch the ignition off.
Door Lock Switch Inhibitor
When you electronically lock your vehicle,the door lock switches and the interiorluggage compartment release switch do notoperate after 20 seconds. You must unlockyour vehicle with the remote control orkeyless entry keypad, or switch the ignitionon, to restore function to these switches. You can switch this feature on or off in theinformation display. See GeneralInformation (page 115).
Activating Intelligent Access
The intelligent access key must be within 3 ft(1 m) of the door or luggage compartmentyou intend to lock or unlock.

Direction Indicator
Illuminates when the left or rightturn signal or the hazard warningflasher is turned on. If theindicators stay on or flash faster, check for aburned out bulb. See Changing a Bulb(page 329).
Door Ajar
Displays when the ignition is onand any door is not completelyclosed.
Also displays when there is a lack of batterypower to the electronic door system. If thisdisplays with all doors closed, have yourvehicle serviced by an authorized dealerimmediately.
Electric Park Brake
Illuminates or flashes when theelectric parking brake has amalfunction. See Electric ParkingBrake (page 210).
Engine Coolant Temperature
Illuminates when the enginecoolant temperature is high. Stopthe vehicle as soon as possible,switch off the engine and let cool. SeeEngine Coolant Check (page 319).
Engine Oil
If it illuminates with the enginerunning or when you are driving,this indicates a malfunction. Stopyour vehicle as soon as it is safe to do soand switch the engine off. Check the engineoil level.

Note:Do not resume your journey if itilluminates despite the level being correct.Have the system checked by your authorizeddealer immediately.
Fasten Seatbelt
Illuminates and a chime sounds toremind you to fasten your seatbelt.See Seatbelt Reminder (page 42).
Front Airbag
If it fails to illuminate when youstart your vehicle, continues toflash or remains on, it indicates amalfunction. Have the system checked byyour authorized dealer.
Head Up Display (If Equipped)
A red beam of lights illuminates onthe windshield in certain instanceswhen using adaptive cruise controlor the collision warning system. It alsoilluminates momentarily when you start yourvehicle to make sure the display works.
High Beam
Illuminates when you switch thehigh beam headlamps on. It flasheswhen you use the headlampflasher.

Adaptive Steering

SITTING IN THE CORRECT
POSITION
WARNING: Sitting improperly, out ofposition or with the seatback reclined too farcan take weight off the seat cushion andaffect the decision of the passenger sensingsystem, resulting in serious injury or deathin the event of a crash. Always sit uprightagainst your seat back, with your feet on thefloor.
WARNING: Do not recline the seatbackas this can cause the occupant to slide underthe safety belt, resulting in serious injury inthe event of a crash.
WARNING: Do not place objects higherthan the seatback to reduce the risk ofserious injury in the event of a crash orduring heavy braking.
When you use them properly, the seat, headrestraint, safety belt and airbags will provideoptimum protection in the event of a crash.
We recommend that you follow theseguidelines:
•Sit in an upright position with the base ofyour spine as far back as possible.
•Do not recline the seatback more than30 degrees.
•Adjust the head restraint so that the topof it is level with the top of your head andas far forward as possible. Make sure thatyou remain comfortable.
•Keep sufficient distance betweenyourself and the steering wheel. Werecommend a minimum of 10 in (25 cm)between your breastbone and the airbagcover.
•Hold the steering wheel with your armsslightly bent.
•Bend your legs slightly so that you canpress the pedals fully.
•Position the shoulder strap of the safetybelt over the center of your shoulder andposition the lap strap tightly across yourhips.
Make sure that your driving position iscomfortable and that you can maintain fullcontrol of your vehicle.
