WARNING: If a supplementary restraintsystem component has deployed, it will notfunction again. Have the system andassociated components inspected as soonas possible. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in personal injury or death.
The Safety Canopy deploys during significantside crashes or when a certain likelihood ofa rollover event is detected by the rolloversensor. The Safety Canopy is mounted tothe roof side rail sheet metal, behind theheadliner, above each row of seats. In certainsideways crashes or rollover events, theSafety Canopy will be activated, regardlessof which seats are occupied. The SafetyCanopy is designed to inflate between theside window area and occupants to furtherenhance protection provided in side impactcrashes and rollover events.
The system consists of the following:
•Safety Canopy curtain airbags above thetrim panels over the front and rear sidewindows identified by a label or wordingon the headliner or roof-pillar trim.
•A flexible headliner which opens abovethe side doors to allow air curtaindeployment
· Crash sensors and monitoringsystem with a readiness indicator.See Crash Sensors and AirbagIndicator (page 53).
Properly restrain children 12 years old andunder in the rear seats. The Safety Canopywill not interfere with children restrainedusing a properly installed child or boosterseat because it is designed to inflatedownward from the headliner above thedoors along the side window opening.
The design and development of the SafetyCanopy included recommended testingprocedures that were developed by a groupof automotive safety experts known as theSide Airbag Technical Working Group. Theserecommended testing procedures helpreduce the risk of injuries related to thedeployment of side airbags (including theSafety Canopy).

CRASH SENSORS AND AIRBAG
INDICATOR
WARNING: Modifying or addingequipment to the front end of your vehicle(including hood, bumper system, frame, frontend body structure, tow hooks and hoodpins) may affect the performance of theairbag system, increasing the risk of injury.Do not modify or add equipment to the frontend of your vehicle.
Your vehicle has a collection of crash andoccupant sensors which provide informationto the restraints control module whichdeploys (activates) the front seatbeltpretensioners, driver airbag, passengerairbag, knee airbag(s), seat mounted sideairbags, and the Safety Canopy. Based onthe type of crash, the restraints controlmodule will deploy the appropriate safetydevices.
The restraints control module also monitorsthe readiness of the above safety devicesplus the crash and occupant sensors. Awarning indicator light in the instrumentcluster indicates the readiness of the safetysystem. If this warning indicator light is notfunctioning and there is another fault withinthe system, the message cluster coulddisplay an airbag failure warning. A tonesounds, a warning indicator light illuminates,or both, until the problem is repaired. Routinemaintenance of the airbag is not required.
A difficulty with the system is indicated byone or more of the following:
The indicator light will notilluminate immediately after youswitch the ignition on.
•The indicator light either flashes or staysilluminated.
•You could hear five tones thatperiodically repeat until the problem isrepaired.
•A message could appear in theinformation display.
If any of these things happen, evenintermittently, have the supplementalrestraint system serviced at an authorizeddealer immediately. Unless serviced, thesystem may not function properly in theevent of a crash.
The seatbelt pretensioners and the airbagsupplemental restraint system are designedto activate when your vehicle sustains frontalor sideways deceleration sufficient to causethe restraints control module to deploy asafety device or when a certain likelihood ofa rollover event is detected by the rolloversensor.

The fact that the seatbelt pretensioners orairbags did not activate for both front seatoccupants in a crash does not mean thatsomething is wrong with the system. Rather,it means the restraints control moduledetermined the crash conditions (forexample, crash severity, belt usage) werenot appropriate to activate these safetydevices.
•The design of the front airbags is toactivate only in frontal and near-frontalcrashes (not rollovers, side impacts orrear impacts) unless the crash causessufficient frontal deceleration.
•The seatbelt pretensioners are designedto activate in frontal, near-frontal, sideand rollover crashes.
•The design of the side airbags is to inflatein certain side crashes. Side airbagscould activate in other types of crashesif the vehicle experiences sufficientsideways motion or deformation.
•The knee airbag(s) could deploy basedon crash severity and occupantconditions.
•The design of the Safety Canopy is toinflate in certain side impact crashes andwhen a certain likelihood of rollover isdetected by the rollover sensor. TheSafety Canopy could activate in othertypes of crashes if the vehicleexperiences sufficient sideways motionor deformation, or a certain likelihood ofrollover.
AIRBAG DISPOSAL
Contact your authorized dealer as soon aspossible. Airbags must be disposed of byqualified personnel.

Note:Some warning indicators appear inthe information display and operate thesame as a warning lamp but do notilluminate when you start your vehicle.
Adaptive Cruise Control Indicator (If
Equipped)
It illuminates when you switch thesystem on.
It illuminates white when thesystem is in standby mode. It illuminatesgreen when you set the adaptive cruisespeed.

Airbag Warning Lamp
If it does not illuminate when youswitch the ignition on, continuesto flash or remains on when theengine is running, this indicates amalfunction. Have your vehicle checked assoon as possible.
Anti-Lock Brake System Warning Lamp
If it illuminates when you aredriving, this indicates amalfunction. Your vehiclecontinues to have normal braking withoutthe anti-lock brake system function. Haveyour vehicle checked as soon as possible.
Auto Hold Active
It illuminates when the systemholds your vehicle stationary.
Auto Hold Unavailable
It illuminates when the system ison, but unavailable to hold yourvehicle stationary.
Automatic Headlamp High BeamIndicator (If Equipped)
It illuminates when the systemautomatically turns the headlamphigh beam on.

Auto-Start-Stop Indicator (If Equipped)
It will illuminate to inform you whenthe engine shuts down or inconjunction with a message.
Battery
If it illuminates while driving, itindicates a malfunction. Switch offall unnecessary electricalequipment and have the system checked byan authorized dealer immediately.
Blind Spot Information SystemIndicator (If Equipped)
It illuminates when you switch thesystem off.

SITTING IN THE CORRECT
POSITION
WARNING: Sitting improperly, out ofposition or with the seatback reclined too farcan take weight off the seat cushion andaffect the decision of the passenger sensingsystem, resulting in serious injury or deathin the event of a crash. Always sit uprightagainst your seat back, with your feet on thefloor.
WARNING: Do not recline the seatbacktoo far as this can cause the occupant toslide under the seatbelt, resulting in seriousinjury in the event of a collision.
WARNING: Do not place objects higherthan the top of the seat backrest. Failure tofollow this instruction could result in personalinjury or death in the event of a sudden stopor crash.
When you use them properly, the seat, headrestraint, seatbelt and airbags will provideoptimum protection in the event of a crash.
We recommend that you follow theseguidelines:
•Sit in an upright position with the base ofyour spine as far back as possible.
•Do not recline the seat backrest so thatyour torso is more than 30° from theupright position.
•Adjust the head restraint so that the topof it is level with the top of your head andas far forward as possible. Make sure thatyou remain comfortable.
•Keep sufficient distance betweenyourself and the steering wheel. Werecommend a minimum of 10 in (25 cm)between your breastbone and the airbagcover.
•Hold the steering wheel with your armsslightly bent.
•Bend your legs slightly so that you canpress the pedals fully.
•Position the shoulder strap of the seatbeltover the center of your shoulder andposition the lap strap tightly across yourhips.
Make sure that your driving position iscomfortable and that you can maintain fullcontrol of your vehicle.

•You can reset the timer by interactingwith your vehicle (such as pressing thebrake pedal or accelerator pedal).
•You can temporarily switch off theshutdown feature any time the ignition ison (for the current ignition cycle only).Use the information display to do so. SeeInformation Displays (page 108).
•During the countdown before engineshutdown, you are prompted to press OKor RESET (depending on your type ofinformation display) to temporarily switchthe feature off (for the current ignitioncycle only).
Stopping the Engine When YourVehicle is Stationary
1. Put the transmission in position P.
2. Press the button once.
3. Apply the parking brake.
Note:This switches off the ignition, allelectrical circuits, warning lamps andindicators.
Note:If the engine is idling for 30 minutes,the ignition and engine automatically shutdown.
Stopping the Engine When YourVehicle is Moving
WARNING: Switching off the enginewhen the vehicle is still moving will result ina loss of brake and steering assistance. Thesteering will not lock, but higher effort willbe required. When the ignition is switchedoff, some electrical circuits, including airbags, warning lamps and indicators may alsobe off. If the ignition was turned offaccidentally, you can shift into neutral (N) andre-start the engine.
1. Put the transmission in position N anduse the brakes to bring your vehicle to asafe stop.
2. When your vehicle has stopped, put thetransmission in position P.
3. Press and hold the button for onesecond, or press it three times within twoseconds.
4. Apply the parking brake.
Guarding Against Exhaust Fumes
WARNING: If you smell exhaust fumesinside your vehicle, have your vehiclechecked by your authorized dealerimmediately. Do not drive your vehicle if yousmell exhaust fumes. Carbon monoxide ispresent in exhaust fumes. Take precautionsto avoid its dangerous effects.
Important Ventilating Information
If you stop your vehicle and the leave theengine idling for long periods, werecommend that you do one of the following:
•Open the windows at least 1 in (2.5 cm).
•Set your climate control to outside air.

Starting and Stopping the Engine

WARNING: Make sure that the cablesare clear of any moving parts and fueldelivery system parts.
To Start the Engine
1. Start the engine of the booster vehicleand rev the engine moderately, or pressthe accelerator gently to keep yourengine speed between 2000 and 3000RPM, as shown in your tachometer.
2. Start the engine of the disabled vehicle.
3. Once the disabled vehicle has beenstarted, run both vehicle engines for anadditional three minutes beforedisconnecting the jumper cables.
Remove the jumper cables in the reverseorder that they were connected.
Note:Do not switch the headlamps on whendisconnecting the cables. The peak voltagecould blow the bulbs.
POST-CRASH ALERT SYSTEM
The system flashes the direction indicatorsand sounds the horn (intermittently) in theevent of a serious impact that deploys anairbag (front, side, side curtain or SafetyCanopy) or the seatbelt pretensioners.
The horn and indicators turn off when:
•You press the hazard control button.
•You press the panic button on the remoteentry transmitter (if equipped).
•Your vehicle runs out of power.
•Sounding of the horn is only enabled inspecific markets.

Note: Do not use razor blades or othersharp objects to clean or remove decals fromthe inside of the heated rear window. Thevehicle warranty does not cover damagecaused to the heated rear window grid lines.
CLEANING THE INTERIOR
WARNING: Do not use cleaningsolvents, bleach or dye on the vehicle'sseatbelts, as these actions may weaken thebelt webbing.
WARNING: On vehicles equipped withseat-mounted airbags, do not use chemicalsolvents or strong detergents. Such productscould contaminate the side airbag systemand affect performance of the side airbag ina crash.
Note:Follow the same procedure forcleaning leather seats when cleaning leatherinterior. See Cleaning Leather Seats (page311).
Note:Do not use household cleaningproducts or glass cleaners, which can stainand discolor the fabric and affect the flameretardant abilities of the seat materials.
For fabric, carpets, cloth seats, safety beltsand seats equipped with side airbags:
•Remove dust and loose dirt with avacuum cleaner.
•Remove light stains and soil withMotorcraft® Professional Strength Carpet& Upholstery Cleaner.
For grease or tar stains:
•Spot clean the area with Motorcraft® Spotand Stain Remover. In Canada, useMotorcraft® Multi-Purpose Cleaner.
•If a ring forms on the fabric after spotcleaning, clean the entire areaimmediately, but do not oversaturate orthe ring will set.
Cleaning Black Label or PresidentialInterior (If Equipped)
Note:Alcantara microfiber cloth fabric ismade of polyester microfiber withmicro-porous polyurethane. Usingcommercially available fabric cleaners cancause permanent damage.
Note:Do not use commercially availableleather and vinyl cleaning products onAlcantara microfiber cloth fabric.
Note:Lincoln Black Label or Presidentialvehicles may have Alcantara microfiber clothfabric on the seats, headliner, floor mats anddoor panels.
Depending on the type of stain, use water,lemon juice or pure ethyl alcohol whencleaning. For cleaning Alcantara microfibercloth, refer to the following chart:

CLEANING THE INSTRUMENT
PANEL AND INSTRUMENT
CLUSTER LENS
WARNING: Do not use chemicalsolvents or strong detergents when cleaningthe steering wheel or instrument panel toavoid contamination of the airbag system.
Note:Follow the same procedure ascleaning leather seats for cleaning leatherinstrument panels and leather interior trimsurfaces. See Cleaning Leather Seats (page311).
Clean the instrument panel and cluster lenswith a clean, damp and soft cloth, then usea clean, dry and soft cloth to dry these areas.
•Avoid cleaners or polishes that increasethe gloss of the upper portion of theinstrument panel. The dull finish in thisarea helps protect you from undesirablewindshield reflection.
•Do not use any household cleaningproducts or glass cleaners as these maydamage the finish of the instrumentpanel, interior trim and cluster lens.
•Wash or wipe your hands clean if youhave been in contact with certainproducts such as insect repellent andsuntan lotion to avoid possible damageto the interior painted surfaces.
•Do not allow air fresheners and handsanitizers to spill onto interior surfaces.If a spill occurs, wipe off immediately.Your warranty may not cover thesedamages.
If a staining liquid like coffee or juice hasbeen spilled on the instrument panel or oninterior trim surfaces:
1.Wipe up spilled liquid using a clean, softcloth as quickly as possible.
2. Use Motorcraft Premium Leather andVinyl Cleaner or a commercially availableleather cleaning product for automotiveinteriors. Test any cleaner or stainremover on an inconspicuous area.
3. Alternatively, wipe the surface with aclean, soft cloth and a mild soap andwater solution. Dry the area with a clean,soft cloth.
4.If necessary, apply more soap and watersolution or cleaning product to a clean,soft cloth and press it onto the soiledarea. Allow this to set at roomtemperature for 30 minutes.
5. Remove the soaked cloth, then with aclean, damp cloth, use a rubbing motionfor 60 seconds on the soiled area.
6. Dry the area with a clean, soft cloth.
