Note:When the passenger airbag statusindicator OFF light illuminates, the passenger(seat mounted) side airbag may be disabledto avoid the risk of airbag deploymentinjuries.
After all occupants have adjusted their seatsand put on seatbelts, it is very important thatthey continue to sit properly. A properlyseated occupant sits upright, leaning againstthe seat backrest, and centered on the seatcushion, with their feet comfortably extendedon the floor. Sitting improperly can increasethe chance of injury in a crash event. Forexample, if an occupant slouches, lies down,turns sideways, sits forward, leans forwardor sideways, or puts one or both feet up, thechance of injury during a crash greatlyincreases.
If you think that the status of the passengerairbag off indicator lamp is incorrect, checkfor the following:
•Objects lodged underneath the seat.
•Objects between the seat cushion andthe center console.
•Objects hanging off the seat backrest.
•Objects stowed in the seat backrest mappocket.
•Objects placed on the occupant's lap.
•Cargo interference with the seat
•Other passengers pushing or pulling onthe seat.
•Rear passenger feet and knees restingor pushing on the seat.
The conditions listed above may cause theweight of a properly seated occupant to beincorrectly interpreted by the front passengersensing system. The person in the frontpassenger seat may appear heavier or lighterdue to the conditions described in the listabove.
Make sure the front passengersensing system is operatingproperly. See Crash Sensors andAirbag Indicator (page 53).
If the airbag readiness light is lit, do thefollowing:
The driver and adult passengers shouldcheck for objects lodged underneath thefront passenger seat, or cargo interferingwith the seat.
If there are lodged objects, or cargo isinterfering with the seat, take the followingsteps to remove the obstruction:
•Pull the vehicle over.
•Switch the vehicle off.
•Driver and adult passengers shouldcheck for any objects lodged underneaththe front passenger seat or cargointerfering with the seat.
•Remove the obstruction(s) (if found).
•Restart the vehicle.
•Wait at least two minutes and verify thatthe airbag readiness light is no longerilluminated.
•If the airbag readiness light remainsilluminated, this may or may not be aproblem due to the front passengersensing system.
Do not attempt to repair or service thesystem. Take your vehicle immediately to anauthorized dealer.

Note:The passenger sensing system willdeactivate the passenger seat-mounted sideairbag if it detects an empty passenger seat.
The design and development of the sideairbag system included recommendedtesting procedures that were developed bya group of automotive safety experts knownas the Side Airbag Technical Working Group.These recommended testing procedureshelp reduce the risk of injuries related to thedeployment of side airbags.
DRIVER KNEE AIRBAG
A driver's knee airbag is located under theinstrument panel. During a crash, therestraints control module may activate thedriver's knee airbag based on crash severityand occupant conditions. Under certain crashand occupant conditions, the driver’s kneeairbag may deploy but the driver’s frontairbag may not activate. As with front andside airbags, it is important to be properlyseated and restrained to reduce the risk ofdeath or serious injury.
Make sure the knee airbag isoperating properly. See CrashSensors and Airbag Indicator(page 53).
SAFETY CANOPY™
WARNING: Do not place objects ormount equipment on or near the headlinerat the siderail that may come into contactwith a deploying curtain airbag. Failure tofollow these instructions may increase therisk of personal injury in the event of a crash.
WARNING: Do not lean your head onthe door. The curtain airbag could injure youas it deploys from the headliner.
WARNING: Do not attempt to service,repair, or modify the supplementary restraintsystem or associated components. Failureto follow this instruction could result inpersonal injury or death.
WARNING: All occupants of yourvehicle, including the driver, should alwaysproperly wear their seatbelts, even when anairbag supplemental restraint system isprovided. Failure to properly wear yourseatbelt could seriously increase the risk ofinjury or death.

CRASH SENSORS AND AIRBAG
INDICATOR
WARNING: Modifying or addingequipment to the front end of your vehicle(including hood, bumper system, frame, frontend body structure, tow hooks and hoodpins) may affect the performance of theairbag system, increasing the risk of injury.Do not modify or add equipment to the frontend of your vehicle.
Your vehicle has a collection of crash andoccupant sensors which provide informationto the restraints control module whichdeploys (activates) the front seatbeltpretensioners, driver airbag, passengerairbag, knee airbag(s), seat mounted sideairbags, and the Safety Canopy. Based onthe type of crash, the restraints controlmodule will deploy the appropriate safetydevices.
The restraints control module also monitorsthe readiness of the above safety devicesplus the crash and occupant sensors. Awarning indicator light in the instrumentcluster indicates the readiness of the safetysystem. If this warning indicator light is notfunctioning and there is another fault withinthe system, the message cluster coulddisplay an airbag failure warning. A tonesounds, a warning indicator light illuminates,or both, until the problem is repaired. Routinemaintenance of the airbag is not required.
A difficulty with the system is indicated byone or more of the following:
The indicator light will notilluminate immediately after youswitch the ignition on.
•The indicator light either flashes or staysilluminated.
•You could hear five tones thatperiodically repeat until the problem isrepaired.
•A message could appear in theinformation display.
If any of these things happen, evenintermittently, have the supplementalrestraint system serviced at an authorizeddealer immediately. Unless serviced, thesystem may not function properly in theevent of a crash.
The seatbelt pretensioners and the airbagsupplemental restraint system are designedto activate when your vehicle sustains frontalor sideways deceleration sufficient to causethe restraints control module to deploy asafety device or when a certain likelihood ofa rollover event is detected by the rolloversensor.

The fact that the seatbelt pretensioners orairbags did not activate for both front seatoccupants in a crash does not mean thatsomething is wrong with the system. Rather,it means the restraints control moduledetermined the crash conditions (forexample, crash severity, belt usage) werenot appropriate to activate these safetydevices.
•The design of the front airbags is toactivate only in frontal and near-frontalcrashes (not rollovers, side impacts orrear impacts) unless the crash causessufficient frontal deceleration.
•The seatbelt pretensioners are designedto activate in frontal, near-frontal, sideand rollover crashes.
•The design of the side airbags is to inflatein certain side crashes. Side airbagscould activate in other types of crashesif the vehicle experiences sufficientsideways motion or deformation.
•The knee airbag(s) could deploy basedon crash severity and occupantconditions.
•The design of the Safety Canopy is toinflate in certain side impact crashes andwhen a certain likelihood of rollover isdetected by the rollover sensor. TheSafety Canopy could activate in othertypes of crashes if the vehicleexperiences sufficient sideways motionor deformation, or a certain likelihood ofrollover.
AIRBAG DISPOSAL
Contact your authorized dealer as soon aspossible. Airbags must be disposed of byqualified personnel.

Supplementary Restraints System

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
MyKey allows you to program keys withrestricted driving modes to promote gooddriving habits. You can program therestrictions to all keys except one. Any keysthat you did not program are administratorkeys or admin keys.
You can use admin keys to:
•Create a MyKey with certain vehiclerestrictions.
•Program certain MyKey settings.
•Clear all MyKey restrictions.
After you program a MyKey, you can viewthe following information through theinformation display:
•The total number of admin keys andMyKeys for your vehicle.
•The total distance a MyKey drivertraveled with your vehicle.
Note:Every MyKey receives the samerestrictions and settings. You cannotprogram them individually.
Note:For vehicles equipped with apush-button start switch: When both a MyKeyand an admin key are present when youstart your vehicle, the system recognizes theadmin key only.
Standard Settings
Not every vehicle includes the features listedbelow. If your vehicle has this equipment,then you cannot change the followingsettings when using a MyKey:
•Seatbelt reminder or Belt-Minder™. MyKeymutes the audio system until drivers, andin some instances, passengers, fastentheir seatbelts. Note: If your vehicleincludes an AM/FM radio or a very basicaudio system, then the radio may notmute.
•Earlier low-fuel warning. The low-fuelwarning activates earlier for MyKeydrivers, giving them more time to refuel.
•Certain driver alerts, stability systems orparking aids turn on automatically whenyou use the MyKey system. For example,Blind Spot Information System (BLIS),cross traffic alert, lane departure warningor forward collision warning. Note: MyKeydrivers may be able to turn the lanedeparture warning feature off, but thisfeature turns back on automatically withevery new key cycle.
•Restricted touchscreen operation in somemarkets. For example, MyKey mayprevent manual navigation destinationinput while the vehicle is in any gearother than park (P) or when the vehiclereaches a certain rate of speed.
•Satellite radio adult content restrictions,if this feature is available in your market.
Optional Settings
You can configure certain vehicle featuresettings when you first create a MyKey. Youcan also change the settings afterward withan admin key.

POWER LIFTGATE
WARNING: It is extremely dangerousto ride in a cargo area, inside or outside ofa vehicle. In a crash, people riding in theseareas are more likely to be seriously injuredor killed. Do not allow people to ride in anyarea of your vehicle that is not equipped withseats and seatbelts. Make sure everyone inyour vehicle is in a seat and properly usinga seatbelt. Failure to follow this warningcould result in serious personal injury ordeath.
WARNING: Make sure that you fullyclose the liftgate to prevent exhaust fumesfrom entering your vehicle. If you are unableto fully close the liftgate, open the air ventsor the windows to allow fresh air to enteryour vehicle. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in personal injury or death.
WARNING: Keep keys out of reach ofchildren. Do not allow children to operate orplay near an open or moving power liftgate.You should supervise the operation of thepower liftgate at all times.
Note: Make sure that you close the liftgatebefore operating or moving your vehicle,especially in an enclosure, like a garage ora parking structure. This could damage theliftgate and its components.
Note: Do not hang anything, for example abike rack, from the glass or liftgate. Thiscould damage the liftgate and itscomponents.
The liftgate only operates with thetransmission in park (P).
Three warning tones sound as the liftgatebegins to power close. One short chimeindicates a problem with the open or closerequest, caused by:
•The ignition is on and the transmissionis not in park (P).
•The battery voltage is below theminimum operating voltage.
•The vehicle speed is at or above 3 mph(5 km/h).
If the liftgate starts to close after it has fullyopened, this indicates there may beexcessive weight on the liftgate or a possiblestrut failure. A repetitive chime sounds andthe liftgate closes under control. Remove anyexcessive weight from the liftgate. If theliftgate continues to close after opening,have the system checked by an authorizeddealer.

WARNING: Make sure all persons areclear of the power liftgate area before usingthe power liftgate control.

Liftgate

Brake System Warning Lamp
WARNING: Driving your vehicle withthe warning lamp on is dangerous. Asignificant decrease in braking performancemay occur. It may take you longer to stopyour vehicle. Have your vehicle checked assoon as possible. Driving extended distanceswith the parking brake engaged can causebrake failure and the risk of personal injury.
Note:Indicators vary depending on region.
It illuminates when you engage theparking brake and the ignition ison.
If it illuminates when your vehicleis moving, make sure the parkingbrake is disengaged. If the parking brake isdisengaged, this indicates low brake fluidlevel or a brake system fault. Have yourvehicle checked as soon as possible.
Cruise Control Indicator
It illuminates when you switch thesystem on.
See Using Cruise Control (page210).
Direction Indicator
Illuminates when you turn the leftor right direction indicator or thehazard warning flasher on. If theindicators stay on or flash faster, check for aburned out bulb. See Changing a Bulb(page 301).
Door Ajar
Displays when the ignition is onand any door is not completelyclosed.
Electric Park Brake
It will illuminate or flash when theelectric parking brake has amalfunction. See Electric ParkingBrake (page 189).
Engine Coolant Temperature WarningLamp
If it illuminates when your vehicleis moving, this indicates that theengine is overheating. Stop yourvehicle as soon as it is safe to do so andswitch the engine off. Have your vehiclechecked as soon as possible.
Fasten Seatbelt Warning Lamp
It illuminates and a chime soundsuntil you fasten the seatbelts.
Front Fog Lamp Indicator (If Equipped)
It illuminates when you switch thefront fog lamps on.

SITTING IN THE CORRECT
POSITION
WARNING: Sitting improperly, out ofposition or with the seatback reclined too farcan take weight off the seat cushion andaffect the decision of the passenger sensingsystem, resulting in serious injury or deathin the event of a crash. Always sit uprightagainst your seat back, with your feet on thefloor.
WARNING: Do not recline the seatbacktoo far as this can cause the occupant toslide under the seatbelt, resulting in seriousinjury in the event of a collision.
WARNING: Do not place objects higherthan the top of the seat backrest. Failure tofollow this instruction could result in personalinjury or death in the event of a sudden stopor crash.
When you use them properly, the seat, headrestraint, seatbelt and airbags will provideoptimum protection in the event of a crash.
We recommend that you follow theseguidelines:
•Sit in an upright position with the base ofyour spine as far back as possible.
•Do not recline the seat backrest so thatyour torso is more than 30° from theupright position.
•Adjust the head restraint so that the topof it is level with the top of your head andas far forward as possible. Make sure thatyou remain comfortable.
•Keep sufficient distance betweenyourself and the steering wheel. Werecommend a minimum of 10 in (25 cm)between your breastbone and the airbagcover.
•Hold the steering wheel with your armsslightly bent.
•Bend your legs slightly so that you canpress the pedals fully.
•Position the shoulder strap of the seatbeltover the center of your shoulder andposition the lap strap tightly across yourhips.
Make sure that your driving position iscomfortable and that you can maintain fullcontrol of your vehicle.

Start: Starts the engine.
•Press the brake pedal, and then pressthe button for any length of time. Anindicator light on the button illuminateswhen then ignition is on and when theengine starts.
STARTING A GASOLINE ENGINE
When you start the engine, the idle speedincreases, this helps to warm up the engine.If the engine idle speed does not slow downautomatically, have your vehicle checked byan authorized dealer.
Note:If your vehicle is equipped with remotestart, you can start your vehicle with theremote, and then drive away by pressing thebrake pedal and pushing a button on thetransmission. This allows you to drive awaywithout pressing the engine start button.
Before starting the engine, check thefollowing:
•Make sure all occupants have fastenedtheir safety belts.
•Make sure the headlamps and electricalaccessories are off.
•Make sure the parking brake is on.
•Put the transmission in P.
Note:Do not touch the accelerator pedal.
1. Fully press the brake pedal.
2. Press the button.
The system does not function if:
•The key frequencies are jammed.
•The key battery has no charge.
If you are unable to start the engine, do thefollowing:
1. Open the center console lid.
2. Slide the remote into the back-up slot.
3. With the key in this position, press thebrake pedal, then the START button toswitch the ignition on and start yourvehicle.
Fast Restart
The fast restart feature allows you to restartthe engine within 20 seconds of switching itoff, even if a valid key is not present.
